I am sad that Kodachrome film is dead. Out of all my dad's and my photos the Kodachrome ones look the best by far. But for me digital killed it. I used to show the customers in camera stores that I worked in in the 1980's how to use it. More on Kodak's blog: http://homepage.1000words.kodak.com/default...
This is one reason I work at Rackspace. We must find ways to make our memories last longer than Kodachrome.

My oldest took photography in high school this year and complained that he had to develop in film. His words, Why do I need to do that, can't I just take pictures, with my digital camera and then use Photoshop? My youngest, who is Six says, Hey I just took these pictures lets post it to flickr for grandpa and grandma. Kodachrome, unfortunately, is joining the buggy whip, the LP, and others into the graveyard of technology...

By the way this entire post was made on the new iPhone. Damn it is nice to have copy and paste.

Eran: I haven't used film for years now.

Matthew: nothing like a Kodachrome sunset.

I still shoot film. I like how it looks and appreciate its benefits and limitations. It is getting harder and harder to find developing shops, but I am not ready to turn in my AE-1.

Ditto on being sad its ending. I am surprised it lasted this long considering the inroads digital photography has made. A great product for a long time!

Well, there are digital replacements. DxO labs (and I'm sure there are others) has a software that emulates dozens of films, including Kodachrome. You can even mix and match color reproduction and grains from different film types.

What is the world coming to, Robert?! Are you expressing delight at being granted "copy and paste" capability on only the third version of an Apple product, 25 years after the release of the Macintosh?! Are we really moving forward? This is somewhat "tongue in cheek", but it does smack of "Stockholm syndrome", don't you think? (By the way, Symbian S60 has had this for years; when do you think you might get multitasking?)
- John W Lewis
Going to miss it. But if you were good at using Kodachrome the switch to SLR digital was a piece of cake. My dad's photos still look great, too.
- Gary
Was your avatar done with kodachrome? Or the new iphone? I think whichever it was has a color balance problem. Or is it an impressionist portrait? Perhaps you are in the same boat as they possibly were: http://www.revoptom.com/index... Only joking.

Death of a medium is not as important as death of a message. Kodachrome or Ilford (film/paper) matter less than photographers who used them. Go see Robert Frank's Americans (http://www.sfmoma.org/exhibit...) and forget that you're "shooting" digital. Btw, Robert: how Rackspace is going to make (my) memories last longer? (serious question).
- jacek
jacek: my first two years of my blog are gone. Why? The system hosting them is gone. So, Rackspace has the economic activity to stay around a lot longer (we're the world's largest hosting company) so that's one way. But developing cloud systems that are hyper resilient to all sorts of stuff is our job #1 right now.

polou- no, just like painting it will take a back seat in terms of practical documentation use but live on as a valid means of artistry. also, when most people think "film" they think 35mm, but there is also medium and large format film. these still offer extreme resolution at a more affordable price point that their digital equivalents. lastly, every film camera can be digital by scanning the negs.
- Marco
i think kodachrome died because of the weird development demands. not very many labs can develop it
- Marco
I still have 80+ rolls of unexposed film in the freezer (mix of 35mm and 120-size), including an unopened brick of PKM (Kodachrome 25 Professional - ISO 25). Should I shoot it or sell it?
- Victor Panlilio
Robert, do you think that Paul Simon shares your sadness? ;)
