It makes sense to have the content you produce be represented on your site. (more: http://bit.ly/L39H) Our (online) identities are shaped by the ideas we create, debate, and reference and the aesthetic choices we make to present those ideas. The more difficult problem to solve will be how to let different viewers of your site find information that's valuable/relevant to them. I'm thinking of ditching the term "lifestream" because it implies only personal content. However, what shows up in a lifestream is personal, professional, linked references to others' content, etc. How about content-stream? I'll come up with something better...

should we give more flexibility and choice to the user / reader of information? can we make our sites flexible to the consumer rather than the creator of content, in terms of how and what we present?

Yes! You're already familiar with what you've produced, so beyond having a personal reference, our sites are really all about the consumer. It's a complicated problem to design an interface that works for all consumers. We've got power users (like Mike, who already liked this thread within minutes of its creation!). We've got users like my mom, who thought my content-stream was interesting, but was completely overwhelmed by social media! Some users are searching on a specific topic. (end FF comment runway!)
