Question for GEEKS - Is there a way to REMOTELY cut off access to the internet in the entire house? [Background - I have 2 rebellious teens that want to do nothing but gaming].
Alternately I think most routers have some sort of built-in web-based external admin option. If you set up a list of allowed/disallowed MAC addresses then you could toggle the Xbox (or whatever) on/off at will.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Agreed. Logging in to a routers admin via the web would be the easiest way. Linksys router firmware has parental type options available.
- Spencer
If the kids are really rebellious they'll soon figure out they can do a hard reset on the router to bypass you though. Press and hold the little plastic button on the back for five seconds. That's a bit of a scorched earth retaliation on their part though - there's no way they'd be able to hide that other than feigned ignorance.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I'll bet Alex Scoble would have a good answer to this - he's big on console gaming and on network penetration IIRC.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Yeah, the best way that I can think of would be to enable external management of your router, but this also opens you up to increased risks as anyone on the internet can now attempt to take control of your router. But it's usually a feature that you have to turn on while at home. You can't do it remotely the first time.
- Alex Scoble
When you leave the house, take your router with you.
- sofarsoShawn
If they're dedicated, they could always just drop their own router in. To really lock things down you'd literally have to lock things down, i.e. put the router in a locked cabinet, and secure the cable run upstream of the router.
- Ken Sheppardson
I'd actually take the primary connection device if you want to prevent them from accessing the internet all day. Cable modem or whatever router, modem, etc. is provided by your service. Much harder to replace. :)
- Alex Scoble
And of course none of this helps you if you have a neighbor near you with an unprotected or poorly protected wireless router.
- Alex Scoble
Some sort of active jamming device, perhaps, Alex?
- Ken Sheppardson
Sssshhh... my oldest one gets on FriendFeed sometimes and knows how to do stuff with routers... :-| - but usually it's not him that's as much trouble (although he is right now) - it's the 16-yr old who is the worst and with him I try to avoid doing something physical like pulling the plug (I've done that before) because he can spin out of control and start breaking things in the house. :-|
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Even with all this done, couldn't they just connect to another open connection in the vicinity or crack a protected one?
- Maxamad (Amazigh)
It worries me that he is violent. :( Good luck
- Dragon Goldmaple
Your post is public as is your account. He could be reading this as we speak...
- Maxamad (Amazigh)
One of our neighbors has an internet connection that even we can access without a password or anything (although it's a weak signal)... I was thinking along the lines of cutting off the power that goes to the router..
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Well, if there are others routers around, it's kind of futile. If it's a laptop mehbe take computer away or power cord for desktop? Srsly though, some kind of agreement or discipline is best
- Maxamad (Amazigh)
Maxamad: He's sleeping right now... Plus, even if he does read it, he might get a clue the trouble he causes when he participates or assists in his 16-yr old brother's behaviors...
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
How about simple port blocking???Block everything except port 80. Or you could stick in a meter and have then pay by the megabyte. :)
- Roberto Bonini
Use the internet for something intensive yourself? If you eg torrent old films to watch (find something legal carefully) then you can pick when you're going to set that going & it'll make online gaming rather painful due to lag. Definitely recommend trying to negotiate some 'gaming times' first though - it may make them happier if they get some input & you could always use the...
- immaterial
Maxamad - I've taken away the powercord and when I do something physical like that he can escalate out of control & I try to avoid that because the dad's out of town most of the time working. If the dad reacts too strongly, they run away. It truly is a lose/lose situation.
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Maybe some time limits... during certain hours only, or for certain durations per day. Many routers have that capability. But again, you are at the mercy of alternative connections (wi-fi) or factory-reset of the router.
- LogEx
immaterial - the 16-yr old does not follow any rules or respect parental authority.. I'm going to have to activate the state "juvenile outside of control" laws on him before he turns 17.
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
immaterial - I like the torrent film idea, but if there's a lag in the internet or the router has problems, he has taken the router before and thrown it across the room & broke it. :-|
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Is there a specific game they're playing? If you disabled it would they start playing something else or give up?
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Well it sounds like he is going to get physical no matter what you do.
- Dragon Goldmaple
Daniel - yes, the specific game is Gild Wars - the 16 yr. old is addicted to it.
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
I'd definitely make him replace it himself if he did that (or just deny access completely), although I can get rather passive-aggressive. It just doesn't sound like acceptable behaviour, but if he is actually scaring you that's probably worse & more important to sort out than the gaming addiction. Do you have neighbours who could help?
- immaterial
Yeah, it sounds like you have a problem that isn't going to be solved through technical methods.
- Alex Scoble
I see I can get a OEM upgrade for £150 but that totals up with you times that by 3. I have 2 Vista discs already and I think my laptop came with Vista installed so I *think* I can upgrade on all 3 but what's the best deal for me?
- Kol Tregaskes
I was planning on buying one at a time over a period (as I can only afford £150 every so often) but if there is a saving in buying a 3-5 PC license then I'll do that instead.
- Kol Tregaskes
Your license is for up to 3 PCs. At least it is here in the US.
- Anika
you can only buy OEM copies if you're buying some core system hardware at the same time... so you'd have to buy a HDD with each, that'd add £50 to each purchase at least
- alphaxion
If the Home Premium version was good enough for you, the best buy would be to purchase the family pack. That's for up to 3 PCs, but it's only available in the Home Premium variety. http://www.microsoft.com/windows...
- Curtiss Grymala
alpha, well never needed to do that before. Anyway, I'll be buying some RAM and a gfx card anyway.
- Kol Tregaskes
Curtiss, sure but you can get the 1 pack for under £150. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Go to microsoft.co.uk and buy an upgrade license from there. Then just download the ISO and burn it. You can still perform a full, clean install from it, even though it's an upgrade. I just formatted the HD and went ahead with it.
- Ade
Ade, but it's nearly £200 there? I can get it for under £150 above.
- Kol Tregaskes
Uhm.. You're planning to get the Win7 Ultimate? Do you really need it? The home premium version is only £79.99!
- Ade
personally, I refuse to guy any of the "home" versions of windows because of the crippled networking - I like to add my machines to my own AD domain. But that's just me.
- alphaxion
Alpha, agree. With 3 machines here and 2 mobiles (and potential a netbook) I definitely need good networking.
- Kol Tregaskes
What crippled network, exactly? Granted, you can't attach a home edition to Active Directories, but unless you plan to go to that extent Home is usually enough. And don't forget that new homegroup feature thingy. Home edition has it too - unless you plan to share files with anything that's not Win7 driven, in which case forget about it..
- Ade
I have a network that comprises of linux, osx, my win2k3 servers and XP. I did say "personally", as in it's my own personal choice that I don't like versions of windows that are crippled from the point of view of adding a machine to a domain, using simple SMB shares and blind to my group policies. I'm fully aware that other people best suit the home versions and they can stick with that, it's not everyone who has a use for communicating between systems. It's my personal choice.
- alphaxion
I would like the N97 anyhow as I'm fed up with the N96 but is that enough for browsing the net, reading emails and FF, etc. on the move? Is there any benefit over a netbook over a smartphone? I suspect a new N97 will cost more than any netbook I'd get.
- Kol Tregaskes
Personally I would get a smartphone unless you want to be able to type up a bunch of documents on the go.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Well on FF, for example, I do type a lot. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
But, not enough to warrant having to use a computer keyboard.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Plus, a netbook is much harder to carry around then a phone.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Yep, that is one concern. I'm liking not having to carry a laptop around. Although a netbook will be lighter (by how much I don't know) but it's nice to have a light shoulder bag now. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Hell I thought about getting an iPod Touch along with an iPhone because then I could have all my music with me. But, then I decided that not having to carry around an MP3 player and iPod anymore was a lot more appealing then having all my music on me.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I still use a separate (very small) MP3 player. The battery on modern phones are useful and when I used it to listen to my music it ran out of juice most days. My MP3 player needs charging once a week at the most.
- Kol Tregaskes
That I can understand. But, I have a charger/FM transmitter in my car so I don't generally worry about my phone dying faster from playing music.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
what OS does the nokia run? a netbook may have more flexible software options
- Mike Chelen
from fftogo
@mike: i believe that the N97 runs symbian; the N900 would be the right choice :) since it runs maemo/debian
- ovigia
There aren't as many applications for Maemo, at the moment, and I'm not sure if anywhere in the UK is selling the N900...
- Tyson Key
Still, a dedicated FriendFeed client would be useful to see on Symbian.
- Tyson Key
I remember why I don't use my Nokia N96 for listening to music, the player is awful. From what I can remember I could easily edit the playlists on the mobile. I wish I could edit them on my PC or it imported my iTunes playlist(s).
- Kol Tregaskes
If I remember correctly, they were either XML files, or in some other standard format (PLS, I think).
- Tyson Key
ovigia: can any debian programs be installed on maemo? if the full firefox 3 browser can be run, that brings compatibility with many sites and web services, things like google docs and friendfeed
- Mike Chelen
mike: yes maemo runs everything that is in the Debian repos, including Firefox, a couple of months ago i was in a Nokia presentation and i played with one using Firefox and the flash plugin. have a look here http://wiki.maemo.org/Main_Pa... and here http://maemo.org/downloa...
- ovigia
Have you ever thought about the iPhone 3GS or Droid. The browser on those are excellent and have really good social network apps.
- Parvez Halim
ovigia: maemo sounds interesting, the debian repos are quite extensive and include recent software packages. besides, if it is capable of using debian software then installing custom packages is likely fairly straightforward. now, if maemo hardware were only in the $200 netbook range instead of $500...
- Mike Chelen
I tend to go with whatever PC Pro says: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/alist... and they've recommended a Samsung netbook (which doesn't appear to be available now but there are newer versions). I don't want to spend more than £300 machine (in fact a lot less would be good) but I would like to use it on the train and train station to work.
- Kol Tregaskes
Thank you, Rochelle. That reminds me, was there some Microsoft tablet thing the other day?
- Kol Tregaskes
I'm tempted to pick up a netbook this year due to portability factor. If the netbook can run XP it ought to run at least as well or better on Windows 7.
- Eoghann Irving
I'm wondering though (since I plan on keeping the laptop, desktop and N800) about putting linux on the netbook so I can play around a bit.
- Eoghann Irving
I hear good things about the Samsung NC10, and of course, the EEE series are still wildly popular...
- Tyson Key
Eoghann, exactly. WinXP machines should have no problem with Win7 too.

Mac Question: Any advice on where I can buy 2 x 2GB of RAM for my Macbook Pro 15" Unibody? I'm not willing to pay the ridiculous price at Apple and I know there has to be some quality RAM out there on Newegg or something. Any help with link and/or spec recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I usually get my RAM from newegg. Haven't had a problem with any brand from them. BTW, 4GB isn't max on a MBP Unibody. 6GB is, 8GB for the newest ones. =)
- ronin
Ronin: Oh really? Hmm, maybe I'll shell out the cash for 6GB :) What brands do you get from neweggs for your macs?
- Johnny
I usually go with whatever price is relatively low. Which was usually G.Skill. munchkin has worked well as well. Never had a problem with them. If you want to stick with the name brands like Corsair and Crucial they have those too but are usually more expensive. I just max'd mine out to 6GB (like an hour ago) with the Super Talent 4GB from NewEgg and so far so good.
- ronin
Ronin: How much RAM did you have before? 2? 4? How big of a difference in performance?
- Johnny
the first upgrade I'm gonna do to my alu macbook is to swap out the HDD to one that spins at 7.2k RPM - I'll let you know what impact this has on the video editing I do on it. Many people underestimate the impact your HDD has on system performance.
- alphaxion
Alphaxion: I just ordered a 7.2k RPM HDD for my PowerMac G5
- Johnny
mine is just the entry level macbook from the first gen of unibody models. It should give me a good idea as to the effect of these upgrades.
- alphaxion
Alphaxion: Where did you order your parts?
- Johnny
Always get mine from crucial.com. Quality service, and quality product. Never had a problem with them.
- Paul Grav
I've not ordered anything yet, it's supposed to be an anniversary gift from my GF... but I'll be buying from either aria.co.uk, scan.co.uk or ebuyer.com depending on who has the better pricing :)
- alphaxion
Johnny: I had 4GB before. So far no difference really but I haven't started opening multiple RAW files in PS4 yet. =) And yeah, a 7.2k RPM HD vs a 5.4k one does provide a performance boost although I wouldn't be able to put a number on it.
- ronin
@ronin with my work being video editing, I think I'd see a greater performance boost in that activity from a HDD upgrade than I'd get from a RAM upgrade, whereas you'd prolly see a bigger improvement from more RAM in your image editing.
- alphaxion
I've always been a fan of crucial memory. http://www.crucial.com/ Before deciding how much you are going to get, you may want to wait for some bencharmk reviews of 10.6. Your MBP supports Dual-Channel memory as well, so you should install it in matching pairs for best performance. e.g. 2x2GB, 2x4GB vs 1x2GB/1x4GB.
- Mac64
@alphaxion That's true although PS4, being the memory hog that it can be also uses the HD for "scratch" space so a quicker HD will help when RAM gets used up. And yes, installing 6GB means you'll lose interleaving but the performance hit seems negligible compared to the fact that you're getting 2GB more RAM to work with: http://is.gd/2lvzQ
- ronin
I decided to go with Crucial memory - Thanks for all the help!
- Johnny
Just installed my new memory, Thank again! :)

Is there any easy way to find out what font is being used by viewing the page source? I'm trying to find out what font is used for the social mention text on this site: http://www.socialmention.com/
HELP - I bought a new hard drive, unplugged the old one, boot from disc and I'm trying to install Leopard OS X and when it asks where to install to the HD image isn't there. Thoughts? Advice?
As many as you like, but I'm a one-partition person myself. I guess you've figured out that Disk Utility is your next step.
- MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF
Mary, Thanks for the help - I found my way to disk utility and set 1 partition because I plan on using it only in OS X. I hope that's right...
- Johnny
Is there a way to "Share" my google reader stories to my friends but have a private feed? I want to be able to share to Facebook/Friendfeed/Twitter/etc but not have an indexed Shared Items page on Google Search. Any advice?
what if you protect your shared items so that they are not public and then pass it through feedburner with the noindex setting on? I still think if a link is published to twitter or freindfeed it'll be indexed though unless its a private room.
- beersage
Yeah, I have private feeds on FF and Twitter - Too much work, its not THAT big of a deal. Thanks!
- Johnny
I've had my PowerMac G5 for about 3 1/2 years and it runs great but I want to upgrade the internal hard drive. Can I just buy a new hard drive, switch them out, and boot leopard install from disk or is it not that easy?!
- Johnny
It's that easy. Better, in fact... the G5 has 2 internal HD slots, so you can add a new one and keep the old one intact if you want. I believe all the G5s used SATA drives, but verify your particular model to make sure.
- LogEx
Yes, you can easily do that. They're just standard PATA or SATA drives, with nothing Apple-proprietary about them.
- Tyson Key
from FriendFeed API Example
It's very easy. http://support.apple.com/kb... I have two identical drives in my dual 2.5Ghz G5. One is my main drive and the other is a mirror that gets backed up every night using SuperDuper.
- Drew
Great, Thanks for all the quick feedback!
- Johnny
Yeah, just use Migration assistant. I had to use it from a Macbook to Macbook Pro and it worked like a charm.
- Hunt
from BuddyFeed
If you run Time Machine, you can choose restore from backup one you have your new hard drive installed. Then your system is identical to when TIme Machine last backed up.
- Mac64
Mac: If I want a "fresh" install it would be better to shut the tower down, change hard drives, and then use the boot from disc command, right?
- Johnny
Both 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives use the same unified data connector and port design, without the need for any conversion cables/adaptors or similar devices, unlike PATA where there were different connector and port designs.
- Tyson Key
But 3.5" drives will be lower cost per gigbyte :) and will fit in the enclosure. Plus, choices of larger drives than are available in 2.5". I'm not sure if the 2.5" drives would fit the mounting brackets in the G5, they ship with 3.5".
- LogEx
So general dimensions will not be a problem (width, height, depth)
- Johnny
Would a merge of the two be a productive solution? i.e. intra-application tabs to flip between the two/a merge of similar features? I would hope that its would still keep members separate, to avoid diluting FF.
- Jimmy Watson
I think Facebook will ultimately take a majority of the features and use them with Facebook homefeed and then use the FF employees for further development. I see the FF site closing down within 6-12 months
- Johnny
The big question: are we going to lose all our Friendfeed archives? That would be a disaster.
- Sean McBride
Does anyone else find it odd that no one from the FF team has told their users what's going on. It's starting to piss people off.
- Ethan
Robert has been talking about this a lot lately. Here is a good link: http://ff.im/6HqPf

ADVICE: Looking for recommendations for external HD. I bought a Western Digital Passport in December and it has already crashed. I back-up a lot of Aperture files, photo files, music, etc. Any suggestions?
" Macrium Reflect Free Edition enables you to create complete backups of your disk partitions, including operating system, installed programs and all your settings. Using disk images instead of simple file backups allows you to restore your system to the same state in the event of a system crash or hardware failure. The backup disk images can be saved to a local folder, external drives, a network location or burned to a Linux based or BartPE rescue CD/DVD. The program can backup your partition from within Windows by taking advantage of the Volume Shadow Copy service. Other features include mounting and exploring of backup images, optional compression and a built-in scheduler for automated backups."

I have one of those and one of the larget 1TB studio models and they're both working great. So, uh, yeah, guess that means I have no suggestions.
- Akiva Moskovitz
http://www.amazon.com/Western.... That's the one I have. I currently have it attached via FireWire 800 to my Mac Mini (which itself is wired directly to our router) and we use it for OTA backups.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I've heard good things about these WD Models. I might try this exact model out due to the price and FireWire 800 capabilities. Thanks for your help
- Johnny
Johnny, I asked this question a few months ago, and everyone recommended Seagate, so I got a Seagate FreeAgent. I haven't had any issues. I absolutely love it.
- Shevonne
Shevonne: Thanks for the recommendation. I've heard great things about Seagate. I'm by no means an expert with external HDs but there seems to be a "which is better" argument between Seagate and Western Digital.

Anyone know why my flickr pro account doesn't show up in google when you search my name? (http://www.flickr.com/johnnys...) Anyway tips on how to increase page rank?
I practically own the first page of google search results for "johnny schroepfer" but for some reason can't get my Flickr account to show up. Any help?
- Johnny
This has been bugging me for a few days now, I'd really appreciate any help.
- Johnny
@Johnny I just checked for me and same thing. The only way I can think that will get it up is by putting your name as one of the tags, and adding it to your Google public profile. Good luck!
- Shevonne
Shevonne: I haven't tried adding my name as a tag but I did add it to my google profile this morning to see if that would help. I guessing it will take a day or two for the googlebots to crawl the websites. Thanks for the suggestions/help!

I cannot get the Flickr Photo Page Enhancer script to work in Chrome: http://userscripts.org/scripts.... Anyone else have any luck or could help me debug the problem please? :-)
Greasemetal hasn't worked at all for me since Chrome v2. Both v2 and v3 have built-in script support, albeit limited. So you were using that or Greasemetal when the script didn't work? It's not clear from your post. And I should add that "incomplete" support is really true. I've seen dozens of scripts not work in Chrome.
- Vlad Bobleanta
Tyler: Yeah, like Safari has userscripts support on Windows.
- Vlad Bobleanta
Never had the script working, never installed Greasemetal. So it's not worth installing? Any script writers here then? :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
But other scripts work just fine? Cos if that's the case, that may be the end of it. As I said, I've seen this happen quite a few times. I'm anxiously waiting for full user scripts support.
- Vlad Bobleanta
Oh, I see that the developer of that script has a greasemetal version listed. Tried that in Chrome w/out Greasemetal?
- Vlad Bobleanta
A few scripts work yep but a lot that I've tried from FrF don't. But I've had one fixed to work for Chrome and see there are Chrome versions of other script (like Better Gmail) so take it that it's possible to get it to work?
- Kol Tregaskes
Yes without Greasemetal, so just about to install Greasemetal to see if that helps.
- Kol Tregaskes
http://friendfeed.com/micahwi... is a user script developer. None of his scripts work for me in Chrome, though, but perhaps you should ask him about this too. And also please kindly suggest he himself adds Chrome compatibility to his scripts :)
- Vlad Bobleanta
I think Micah has already had a look but yes all of his scripts don't work in Chrome even though they are supposed to.
- Kol Tregaskes
That didn't go well. When I run Greasemetal Chrome loads up for a few seconds then closes. Tried it a few times and same result. so have uninstalled it. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
That's exactly what started happening to me since Chrome v2 (re:greasemetal).
- Vlad Bobleanta
:-( I'm doomed to never get this script to work. It's the only one I'd like working in Chrome, tsch. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Hi there. I'm testing on new Safari tonight, I'll give chrome 2 another go. Chrome1 had decent success, not sure what isn't support now that's causing the breakage. *sigh*
- Micah Wittman
I can't find any resource that describes how to enable user scripts and/or where to store script files. So can't start testing till at least then. Bummer.
- Micah Wittman
Kol, I see Windows platform info, but none for scripting on Mac (granted, the first (non-chromium) pre-release just came out days ago).
- Micah Wittman
Ivan, for future reference, how do you add an extra split with the code?
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol, here's the recipe: there are three parts in the code you need to adjust: part 1) asks the user to enter the url for each frame, part 2) creates the frameset element that holds individual frames, and part 3) creates each of the frames. for 4 frames, you have to have 4 code snippets for part 1) looking like this: L3f7=prompt('Choose%20File%201',A14nH). here "L3f7" is a variable where...
- Ivan Zuzak
I think I'll leave it to the experts. ;-) Thanks, Ivan. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
oh, and i think one could write a bookmarklet that first asks how many frames you want, and then generates and executes the rest of the code automatically :) any interest in that?
- Ivan Zuzak
