By Steve Bass Frugal? Thrifty? No, Cheap! "You're a bargain hunter," one of my more polite friends says. My wife's more to the point: She calls me a cheapskate. I like being frugal, but what do I know? Call me whatever you want (you will anyway), I don't like paying retail and I'm always looking for a deal, especially when shopping online. The Internet gives me the chance to comparison shop, see how shipping figures into the price, look over specifications, and feel confident I've found the best buy. Here are some of the sites I use. There are hundreds - if not thousands - of services that allow you to chat in real time. The one that tends to rule the roost is Skype. Nearly everyone seems to have a Skype account these days. Let's say you have a Skype account, but you're traveling. Yet, you still want to get ahold of your contacts without having to pay a lot of money to do so. What you need is a device that allows you to access your Skype account over Wi-Fi, instead of using a computer! By Bill Pytlovany Are you one of the 350 million Facebook users? I’m a big fan of Facebook and like many I connect daily to see what my friends are doing and to share photos. As a security professional I am very careful about what I post and what information I allow to be shared. In that respect I’m unique. It surprises me how many of my friends will refuse to allow companies to share their information but eagerly give away their personal information to application developers on Facebook. By Harry McCracken Windows 7 is scarcely more than a month old. Most of the people who will eventually use it haven’t gotten around to trying it yet; those that have are still settling in. And the Win 7 experience will change rapidly as remaining bugs are squashed, missing drivers arrive, and compatibility glitches are ironed out. Even so, it’s not too early to start gauging what real people think of Windows Vista’s replacement. So to riff on Ronald Reagan’s famous question from his 1980 debate with Jimmy Carter, Are Windows users better off today than they were a few weeks ago, back in the Vista era? We decided to ask the Technologizer community, a group of tech enthusiasts with a high propensity to acquire new operating systems quickly and push them to their limits. Starting on November 16th, we surveyed our readers (and Twitter followers) about their experiences with Windows 7. Our goal: to do a reality check on the mostly favorable initial reviews of the new OS (as well as our own...

"Black Screen woes could affect millions on Windows 7, Vista and XP" is the title used for a post to Prevx's website describing what they feel is a very troublesome problem. Prevx offered a download to fix the bug, and within a day fear was blogged far and wide blaming the problem on Microsoft, of course, and their darned security patches. Prevx has since backed off a little from their initial claim but you can get a taste here. No related posts.
By Leo Notenboom It's trivial to set up accounts on the free services in which you can be anonymous - using entirely fake information - or in which you can impersonate someone else. I'm not sure I'd expect much help from the provider - Yahoo, in your case. To be honest, even if they did bother to reply, they wouldn't know who to believe. You and I know that you're not, but how's Yahoo to know that you're not the impersonator, or just someone trying to hassle someone else? Here's what I would do... By John Dodge I used to write that the principal purposes for PCs and TVs would never intersect. Here’s my argument: watching TV is numbingly passive requiring little brain power while the PC is interactive necessitating thought, movement and action. Never the twain shall meet.
