"Here in Europe things have been surprisingly quiet. Europe tends to get handsets before the USA and yet we’ve not heard a peep about the Droid here except for a November 9 launch on O2 Germany under the name Motorola Milestone. What about the rest of Europe?"

it's ridiculous. How do they expect to compete?
- Zee.
Precisely Zee. O2 must be ever so pleased.
- Roberto Bonini
well they won't, obviously. it's just newbies getting into the net neutrality debate. they're going to get lynched
- James Cox

anyhow, it's all good- this has to mean that getting unlocked phones will be easier… so then running it on t-mobile uk will be much simpler, especially given that it is such a better network

But Zee, consider. Do newbies even know that non-orange streaming services exist (apart from youtube)??
- Roberto Bonini
+1 James. @Roberto honestly, I'd say YouTube and Spotify are enough to be pissed off about
- Zee.
Agreed Zee. I dislike restrictions in all its forms. I'd steer well clear of Orange on principle alone.
- Roberto Bonini
The strain on the O2 network, at least in London, is palpable. Most people chalk it up to increased data usage driven primarily by iPhone. The hope was that with Vodafone and Orange in the game that things would settle as the usage flattened across the services. Looks like that’s less likely to happen, now that Orange is providing a sub-optimal user experience. This kind of “protectionism” feels a lot like the music industry, before it got burned.

when i switched to tmo about 5 years ago, i was told during the sales pitch that tmo were investing a million pounds a month on their data infrastructure, to build for the future they knew was coming. i believed them- and still do; in areas they've got 3g, the data rate has been pretty decent and continues to be. It also makes sense: when money was cheap, they upgraded their network. now money is expensive, it's impossible to invest. So don't expect anything to change for a while!

"Not to be used for other activities (eg using your handset as a modem, non-Orange internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing, non-Orange internet based video)." Why does it remind me of this? http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- John Craft
Although I agree with what's being said, I think this is just the old T's & C's for Orange Internet services pre the iPhone. They will change them or not enforce them. That being said, Orange is actually the worst uk network in my view and the 750mb limit just goes to show they really do not understand this marketplace. Personally I think that Vodafone will be the network of choice for the uk come Feb when they start selling it. And I for one will be porting over as soon as I can.

@James, I've tried an iPhone on tmob uk and it's not as good a service as O2 tbh. All the networks upgraded in recent times to build proper 3g services. In my experience, Vodafone is by far the best for any Internet service.

I wonder if twisting o2's arm may get me a slight reduction.

Many OpenSocial containers don't use standard API functions and calls. So, where is the reason then using such a platform?

These OpenSocial thingies need to interact with the desktop via a common push notification protocol, like in the case of Growl for Mac and Snarl for Windows. So you could get Digsby style notifications of incoming tweets, facebook status updates, wall writings, etc. as IM style popup notifications or as tickers until you attend to them they should be available. (unless you are in ignore mode)....
- TrafficBug
I could definitely see Gears giving OpenSocial a boost into the desktop realm.

I've followed the MyLifeBits project for years and I'm currently reading Total Recall (Bell's new book), so I'm psyched to finally start wearing one of these. I also have my fitbit on the way.
- Ben Reierson
I want it for artistic reasons. I wouldn't publish everything, I'd scan through it for the best bits. It would be like having my own personal Google Street View.
- Kamilah Gill
@Kamilah I don't actually have one, I'm just saying I'm happy someone's making it a retail product.
- Ben Reierson
@m9m the idea is that the sensecam takes pictures of all the moments that aren't interesting at the time, but can turn out to be important later. Would it be nice to have a picture of the first time you saw your best friend or spouse, or just to locate the last time you had your keys?
- Ben Reierson
I would be selective about when I'd wear it. I couldn't wear it to work when I'm around sensitive documents, of course, and I'd take it off while doing anything private. But otherwise, while driving, walking around, whatever, this would be awesome. You miss so many little things. This gets my artist gears whirling into overdrive.
- Kamilah Gill
1 pic every 30secs -> 2/min. -> 120/hour -> 960 in 8 hours = How do you sort through them all and find exactly what you want. I know there is a timeline you can use but what if you want to find the name a particular book that you looked at but you don't remember when you looked at it, never the less if it was from several days ago!
- Mark Layton
Maybe one day they'll put in some kind of word recognition thing to make it useful for that kind of fine-tuned note taking. As it is, I'd be happy with just being able to skim through the thumbnails to see whether any images for the day stand out.
- Kamilah Gill
@mark ideally you should not have to sort through them, that's basically the point of the mylifebits project. It's all about making software that processes all of your life's data in context and makes it available in a way that works as much like human memory as possible. So if you want to find that book, you might remember it was 2-5 days ago, somewhere in seattle but not at home or work, and the title might have had "Apple" in the title.
- Ben Reierson
This is really cool and works well. I just wonder how long it will last, surely it's not legal? Also, anybody know if it works on 3G?
