I'm pretty sure it's in the collection "Never Eat Anything Bigger Than Your Head", published back in the early/mid 70s. I know I've got it around here somewhere...

With everyone (including myself) talking about the top apps of 2008, I thought I would instead focus on the apps and the startups that have died, lost ground, or simply drifted off into the darkness of the intertubes.
- Anthony Feint
Didn't know that Second Life was on its way out -- or at least to drift aimlessly. Cool list thanks.
- Wayne Schulz
Jaiku doesn't seem to be doing much but is it really on the way out?
- Dave Kinsella
Dave, I don't think Google now wants a Twitter clone so yeah I think Kaiku is on its way out. However, wouldn't be surprised to see microblogging functions integrated into Blogger or even Gmail
- Anthony Feint
author seem to be looking too much into TechCrunch staff mouth...
- A.T.
btw, has anyone been over to Jaiku recently....it seems awfully quiet with people having updated months ago. I struggled to find a user who used Jaiku daily.
- Anthony Feint
Twitter won the microblog game. It just doesn't matter how much extra functionality other services offer, they just don't gain traction. I predict that Utterli, Plurk, and other such offerings will go the way of Pownce soon enough.
- Neal Jansons
Twitter has *not* won. Saying that it has is like calling the game for AOL (vs. Compuserve). Identi.ca might be a small (individual) player right now, but it is part of a growing interoperable network that includes services like army.twit.tv and bleeper.de.
- Michael R. Bernstein
no i don't think Twitter has quite won yet, however I can't see Identi.ca - which is just an open source clone taking the cake. It doesn't matter if its interoperable - because microblogging aint email. It doesn't need to be
- Anthony Feint
So without gambling, Second Life turns into just another 3D chat room? That's a pity.
- Morton Fox
there should be a lot more dead apps than the 5 he listed. And Cuil, as far as I'm concerned, is still alive.
- Vincent van Wylick
Vincent, there are way more than the 7 big ones that I listed but i could only discuss a few. and Cuil - who actually uses it?
- Anthony Feint
Disclosure: I wrote this but I think it's a good set of suggestions for an ailing industry and I'd like to share.
- Adam Posey
You needn't apologize for sharing this. It's one of the most thoughtful pieces I've seen about how the news industry can improve their fortunes.
- Sprague D
My biggest problem is Google's limit on the size of a file I can fetch behind the scenes (1 MB). This really makes larger feed/API calls difficult (if you have zillions of friends, etc)
- Carter Rabasa
cool, this is pretty good. Found quite a few FF accounts of my Twitter follows. Thanks!
- Louis Simoneau
@Carter: Very nice. All that's missing is an invite button for the folks that aren't on FriendFeed already. Perhaps it could be issued as a DM or an @tweet?
- EricaJoy
Is it just me or does this functionality already exist? Perhaps not with wordpress, but maybe with Disqus or something? I swear I've done this before. My head hurts.

yeah... but DIGG works great with video on friendfeed. it is playable. that is also why I like Seesmic. despite the fascists running the company
- Noah David Simon
Just use the Share on Friend Feed Fire Fox bookmarking for videos and stuff that you just want to share with your friends But then it depends what is your objective when you are bookmarking things. If it is SEO, show it to your friends, PR, or get many people to read the post or view the video?
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Anyway thanks for bookmarking the video and the blog post. Many people are coming to watch it. Loren Feldman The Puppet will be working hard reporting on Social Media! ;-)
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I like digg because it tracks how many people are supporting me.... stumbleupon is about to be sold for a reason.... mostly because it is klunky (it is owned by ebay?) .... klunky... same with digg... but what makes digg cool is it promotes well. also stumbleupon logs me out all the time... listen the best is del.icio.us. if yahoo weren't completely broke they would put some kind of digg like interface into del.icio.us and then this shit would be ovah!
- Noah David Simon
Greg is the man who talked me back into doing my art. I used to promote him by selling him art advertising. he is the man I respect more then any person in the world. I consider him a brother... his work is part of the Black Book room feed and he is the only person I really can trust in social media 100%
- Noah David Simon
Noah you really should get back to your Art. Do some parody drawings of Net celebrities! You will have fun doing it and will get many followers from it.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Igor one of the reasons I don't go for the polished look is it is hard to compete with a veteran like Hergert. This guy is the Picasso of today... for me the art is part of a larger organism. the media is not the message for me... but rather for me the message is my media
- Noah David Simon
Of course Herget is great. I am not an art connoisseur but I identified his work as great from first sight. I think you also have a lot of talent when it comes to art. I understand that for you art is not the end game but a tool to express yourself. Use your art to garner positive attention to yourself.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Igor... the first step to being great is knowing who is better. Greg is like an art god... he has perfected the craft to a level that is unbelievable. he is everything I aspire to be on a visual level... that said there is more to me then art. tonight I am still working on organizing my social media contacts. getting thrown off of twitter so many times has made it very important to keep contacts here.
- Noah David Simon
the amazing thing about Greg... is he isn't even trying here... these paintings he does one a day! his shit sells
- Noah David Simon
Artistic people blow me away. I think the right half of my brain was squeezed out by the left. Talent amazes me.
- Robert Hafer
Robert... real artists actually don't work... they love doing the art. they have to fight to do it. I have found that the best thing to do to be a successful artist is to make as little art as possible. sadly... I'm right. promotion is 90% of the game. reason Hergert gets away with it is he is in his 60s and people already buy his shit. he earned where he is today. people like me are still on our way to where he is
- Noah David Simon
"Eschewing the faddish and the hip, Scroll Magazine, brought to you by Web Directions, features in depth articles by deeply experienced practitioners in the fields of user experience design, web design, accessibility, information architecture, web development and more."

Uhh, and there's nothing faddish or hip about that logo?

Quotes: "Can you capture something you see on your screen and paste it into Word or PowerPoint? Do you have a blog? Can you open a link you get in an email message? Do you read more than five blogs a day?"
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm glad that I know my way around a computer but I often wonder how much my "power user" skills are really helping. Is my job to email faster or to communicate better?
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm surprised magazines are still going...I never include them in my heritage media posts because they are so irrelevant today. On the net side, agreed, online may pick up as things get tougher: it's inherently a more efficient form of advertising.
- Duncan Riley
Apple vs Google though, I'm not so sure. Both aren't buying back stock like Microsoft is (see Fred Wilson) which isn't exactly a vote of confidence. GOOG is the biggest now, so may fall the hardest. AAPL on the other hand has one very strong point going for it: desirability. Lets presume the first to drop out of the market is the bottom end, then what's left is looking to make a longer term investment. AAPL wins on that front.
- Duncan Riley
Duncan: Fast Company's magazine's ads sales are up this year so far.
- Robert Scoble
there's always one thing missing from Gary's stories - the fact that he has the money to make the brand. it's too bad no one ever looks at that part - nothing against gary but clearly money changes things.
- Allen Stern
Mark lives a life most of us would love to have. Of course he didn't explain how HE got rich. He sold Broadcast.com to Yahoo for billions. That requires something far beyond discipline: luck. Some people DO win the lottery! But, I find that following people who always chase money is pretty damn boring. I've been on private jets. I've been in expensive cars that cost more than nearly everything I own. Yawn. What is rich? My friend Teresa Williamson inviting me to an awesome concert. My wife hanging out with me on the couch. A conversation with someone who is changing the world. Money ain't everything. I watched my mom die with a bunch of gold in her basement. She couldn't take it with her. On the other hand, money does open doors easier and gets you into wild experiences, but it's not the only way to have wild experiences. That said, I'm following much of Mark's advice because, well, it's good advice for our times.
- Robert Scoble
Yes while money isn't everything it helps. You can do all of the things you mentioned even if you are rich. With that said I do believe that personal happiness is more important than being rich.
- Luka Marinko
Can money buy happiness? No, but a certain amount can make life a little less stressful and more comfortable. I agree with all you've said above Robert. That said... "getting rich" isn't that important to me. I'm perfectly happy in my middle class life.
- Jen (SquirrelGirl)
I've always liked something Walt Disney said about the value of money: "Money is something I understand only vaguely, and I think about it only when I don't have enough to finance my current enthusiasm, whatever it may be. All I know about money is that I have to have it to do things. I don't want to bank my dividends, I'd rather keep my money working.... Money — or, rather the lack of it to carry out my ideas — may worry me, but it does not excite me. Ideas excite me."
- Will King
Nice well rounded mix of new blood Louis. I have been a reader of all the blogs mentioned except Kyle and David. I think I will add them to my Google Reader now. Congrats to all, you have been officially “Louis Grayed.”
- Mike Fruchter
Hey Louis, i've just joined the professional blog circuit with ProProductivity.com . Don't worry. i'm not asking for any favours - just a request to keep an eye out for me - I'm sure everyone says this, but I really think you'll like what I come out with on the online productivity side. Cheers.
- Zee.
I've been LG'd! YAY. Thank you so much!!
- Mona Nomura
Much respect to see some FriendFeed people listed along with the others. Congrats to Mona and Justin! Awesome post, Louis. Some new things are added to my Google Reader :)
- Candace
Already scoping out your September picks on Toluu :)
- Caleb Elston
WOW! Thanks for the mention Louis! Now I've gotta keep it up :)
- Justin Korn
Louis: You are really cool...neat idea to conduct these blog reviews, thanks for bringing them to us!! Cool FF'ers!!
- Susan Beebe
HA! For once I beat you to something. Been subscribed to Chris' EcoTech Daily for a while now. :)
- Cyndy
@Cyndy, mentioning them here doesn't mean they're brand new.
- Louis Gray
I agree with Susan, thanks for bringing new blogs to our eyes, it's easy to get caught up looking at only well known blogs
- gregory
Louis - After successfully turning off all electronics for 12 hours today (something I try to do at least twice a week), I think we all should be thinking about discussing our feelings about Blogenomics (Despite the fact that you and I don't monetize our blogs). I just got back and found the Mashable, Cyndy, Leslie ... story in all my threads. Maybe it's time for a little more open discussion here for the sake of others reading?
- Charlie Anzman
Great idea Louis :) I'm posting this simply to try and keep this thread visible for a few DAYS on FF so that others come across it and contribute. It's important, as I think (know?) that there are many who have been 'convinced' that it's easy to start blogging and watch the dollars roll in. The fact is, that with thousands of new blogs in different spaces appearing each week, it become harder. Much harder. So what does everyone think? Head on over to the link above
- Charlie Anzman
PS: Sorry I invaded this post off-topic. (Me, apologize?) Serious congrats to the the most recent grouping of LG'ed blogs!
- Charlie Anzman
Definitely picked a great group. Chris, Korn, and Mona are already in my feeds. Guess I got 2 more to add, now :)
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I really hope you're on a Skype call with Winer right now. Refreshing your post for the scoop :)
- Michael C. Harris
Michael, if there's more I'll be updating it, naturally, although the API is pretty new
- Duncan Riley
Duncan, I was referring to Winer's comments on the post. Perhaps you haven't seen them yet?
- Michael C. Harris
Don't know why, but I'm getting network timeouts when trying to reach the page.. never has happened before :(
- Bwana ☠
Michael, I have read them and I'm monitoring various channels. The API as I've written it up could be it, but it could be a fully fledged Twitter compatible (new) API as well....least that's what I'm reading people speaking in German talking about :-)
- Duncan Riley
What's bad IMHO about identi.ca is that the solution offers to build multiple isles connected *two-by-two* i.e. A is connected to B, B is connected to C. But A doesn't know about C (if it's not connected to it). What's the benifit? Decentralization of course! What's the inconvenient? When a node of identi.ca's clones is down there's no mean to have a real continious discussion.
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
@directeur: I haven't dug in there enough to know whether it's required to be acyclic or not. If not, then it could be just set up as a redundant mesh with multiple nodes reconnecting to the fabric in various places. If not, link-deaths are going to be brutal. Didn't we already solve this problem? :P
- Alexander Williams
from NoiseRiver
@squidlord: Good idea indeed! And yes we did! :) I still somehow think that we're reinventing the wheel at a certain level. I'm sure that Identica folks are that close to find the ultimate solution, but IMHO having an established and well studied design and concept (I'm not talking about the openmicroblogging protocol, I don't believe in it) is the first thing to do. Delivering an API is the last thing to do. I'm like that I LOVE to challenge established concepts ;-)
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
@directeur: I've always felt the API needs to be done early, actually, and the rest of your interface should descend from it. If it's not useful to you as a designer, then why should it be useful to folks who want to leverage your work? (IRC, damnit. I totally want to see someone impliment a Twitter-clone on an IRC backend. :))
- Alexander Williams
from NoiseRiver
@Alexander Williams (squidlord): Yes! Done before (it's a design workflow) but *delivered* when your design is solid. And Oh yes! I dream of an IRC solution too :)
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
Wow, hats off the guy who designed the awesome rendering engine ..... oh yeah ..and to the guy who drew the cars as well :)
- Sachendra
Good looking renders, But I never understand making CG look so real it looks like a photograph, what's the point of CG unless it CAN'T done with photography
- Dave@yummyporky
Dave, because these can eventually be interactive worlds!
- Jeremiah Owyang
Dave, because it is often cheaper to render an image of an item that does not exist than trying to get a single, or a couple of moc-up products for a photoshoot. If you know the design of your next car, and want to start adverts before they reach production, then this makes sense.
- Apollo Gonzales
How do I know that there fake? The interwebs is full of real stuff, isn't it? (very cool pics though)
- phil baumann
site has exceeded bandwidth-must have been good!
- Arne-Per
I knew this girl who was trying to build a realistic looking whale in CG, so realistic that it doesn't even show any emotion or personality. I still don't see the point of that even today as someone a working creative type. there's really no point of doing that in CG. Same to me with these cars.
- Dave@yummyporky
Also that's why Sherk and Nemo are successful and Final Fantasy - the spirits within and Beowolf are considered flops
- Dave@yummyporky
@Russellreno: edited my comment. It's NOT a run of the mill word. But I like the way it looks and juxtaposition to it's pronunciation. I used that in a creative writing class (for just this exercise) and the professor thought I was sassing her.

"Absolutely" - if you say each syllable really slow it is an amazing word
- Chris Harris
I like pundit and propensity; this morning a guy used "bailiwick" on me; but not gubernatorial ... that word bites.
- Dan Covington
@JA well, consider us the only two...and we might be separated by great distance, so why don't we each take a regional franchise on it? Are we copacetic?

fuckwit or shitwit -- hard choice; probably the former. chowderhead or chucklehead -- probably the latter. Too many good words to roll around in one's mouth and mind. stentorian - I use that muchly lately.
