Kol - it's great how one FF post can start a little movement. I've used it more today than since I signed up whenever a long time ago. Thanks. - phil baumann
Hey cool, Phil. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Kolin: u can add the FF widget as well to the side bar ,just go to the profile and post the (instead of javascript choose image) over here http://friendfeed.com/embed... you can see it at my posterous http://loopper.posterous.com/ I got this tip from http://friendfeed.com/svartli... - Johni Fisher
this posterous: http://this.posterous.com :) - directeur
How do I embed my FF stream on Posterous? - phil baumann
I've embedded this thread on a Posterous entry: http://e-lusion.posterous.com/what-is... :-) - Kol Tregaskes
@phil couldn't you do the embed feature... ? post something to posterous.. and then 'edit' the post and paste the embed? Or maybe simply email it? - Sean
Phil, click on the 'Share' link of the FF entry, then copy the embed code. Create a new Posterous entry, select HTML mode and paste in the embed code. You'll need to edit the width and height (looks like 500 for width). Then post. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
@ Phil Kol beat me to the explanation - Sean
Kol I made the same :-)) - Johni Fisher
Kol - thanks. - phil baumann
I see, commenting via my Posterous entry. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
What is the best width? 500 seems good? - Kol Tregaskes
Kol - is there a way to embed in the sidebar (I've seen others place it on their Posterous). Not just a post... - phil baumann
Phil, see Johni's comment above. - Kol Tregaskes
http://revrev.posterous.com but I rarely use it. - mike fabio
Use 100% as the embed with instead. Looks a lot nicer. - Svartling from email
Does that work with both the embeds and widgets? - Kol Tregaskes
Only with embeds. It's too bad we can't email these friendfeed embeds directly to Posterous. They get garbled. I've tried. - Svartling
My Posterous profile: http://posterous.com/people... - Svartling
It flows through here, usually just for photos: http://lagtime.posterous.com/ - .LAG liked that
Svartling, shame we can't do that with the widgets, it looks untidy on our profile pages. Yep emailing would be cool. - Kol Tregaskes
Maybe some of the Posterous developers see this and could add that feature? Please :) - Svartling
Good thread; got some new subscriptions! http://notratched.posterous.com - NNR
Don't forget to tag your posts like this ((tag: posterous, friendfeed)) in the subject line of your emails. That way your posts will be seen easier by all other Posterous users when they use the global posterous search. - Svartling

I tried embedding a twitter gadget on my posterous profile but it did not work.. How do you embed your friendfeed profile? - David Gross from email
David, I'm not sure it accepts all HTML. For the FF widgets use the image not the Javascript version. - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, yes I see.. I added it, I guess Twitter does not have anything but javascript and flash widgets.. It doesnt matter, since I autopost to twitter there is a button there.. - David Gross from email
http://posterous.com/people... is my profile where you'll find a couple.. - Mo Hall
How do you all add the little twitter and friendfeed images with links to your profiles here on posterous. I don't know the code to do that. :( Help when u can. - Amani
http://mylescrew.posterous.com/ Right now I'm just testing, the import from Blogger was REALLY easy. I'm trying to "port" BlurbBits (http://ff.im/4tlY2) to make them work better on posterous. The iframe style parameter gets removed, which is different than Blogger (there is *always* something). - Chris Myles
Amani: If you set up autopost, they will appear. Here's the link: http://posterous.com/autopost - Nick in Manila
Amani, the little images for twitter etc you get if you autopost to those sites but you might end up with duplicate posts that way. There is a friendfeed badge you can put in your posterous profile at http://friendfeed.com/embed... use the image format, not javascript. - David Gross from email
Check out Wayne Suttons Posterous (he posted his URL in this thread). You see that he has changed some colors. That is a private beta feature that is coming soon to the public. - Svartling

@koltregaskes, my posterous is at http://alexschleber.posterous.com "Quick Hits Business Mindhacks". Had been using it quite a bit the first 6 months of this year. I'm a big fan of Garry & Sachin, but really wish posterous would hurry up with some of the much needed feature upgrades (skins and/or CSS, Retweet button - just use Tweetmeme, custom sidebar HTML, WYSIWIG bookmarklet, etc.) Seems like they're stalling a bit right now, no? - Alex Schleber
They have to be careful not to mess with the simplicity of it, though; that's why so many people like it. If they tart it all up, it might as well just be Tumblr. Which already exists. - NNR from email

@koltregaskes weird that you're "what's your GReader/Posterous/FB?" entries from the last few days seem to presage in a way what happened today.. - Alex Schleber
Keep 'em coming, I'll add you all later today. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Thank God for this thread. I'm going to (slowly) subscribe to all the people I'm subbed to on FF. I have a hunch posterous is going to replace part of the puzzle for me. Thanks Kol. - Ahsan Ali

Wish the RSS import into FriendFeed worked a little better. Would make Posterous more useful to me. - Kol Tregaskes
What's wrong with the RSS feed? that's the whole reason I use Posterous, is because the RSS feed import to FF works so well. - I like big Botts
I've tried a couple today and the images don't come in and the imported text is messy. Works just fine in Google Buzz so if I could work out while my import is messy in FF then it would be a viable option for posting a few articles to both FF and Buzz in one click. - Kol Tregaskes
what do you have in posterous that you don't have on tumblr? anyway, friendfeed has problems all the time, unfortunately we're losing it :( - Flavio
hmm.. Kol, ever try doing it the other way? Have posterous push to friendfeed. - David Gross from email
David, yep. Comes in looking as basic as a tweet: http://ff.im/lxuK8 - Kol Tregaskes
hmm.. I have problems with posterous too.. I forward stuff from email and it messes up the formatting. It just took a 5 picture funny and juggled the pics, how will people get a laugh out of a messed up joke?;( I went to blogger, tumblr and posterous to edit.. I have to do often. - David Gross from email
Robert Scoble
Want to have live conversations like FriendFeed lets you, but better organized? http://livefyre.com/ is the way to go. Getting a demo now.
here we go again? - MiniMage, enterRUPPted
Just signed up around a week ago with livefyre. Have been more in listening mode but so far am really enjoying being able to really follow the live discussions. - Jennifer Aderhold
You mean @replies are highlighted in blue? *mind blown* - Johnny
Whee! Time to camp on another user account that I'll never use! Anyone up for some Wyld Stallyons action? - Akiva
I can't believe Scoble would joke about this, now we really shouldn't listen to him. - Jimminy, CoG of FF
We asked for highlighted @replies yonks ago... despite not getting them, discussion hasn't been effected to much. - Johnny
And now I have that stupid Billy Joel song in my head... DAMN YOU SCOBLE - Johnny
Wow. That's ugly. I can't get beyond the ugly. - Yolanda
Sorry, Robert, you're wrong. - Mark H
Don't you mean, "hyperbowl" ;) - Roberto Bonini
I definitely am stoked to see live conversations, organized, too -- but I lasted about 25 seconds on the site - Christopher Galtenberg
Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh I get it now... It's threaded Twitter conversations... except without using Twitter kinda... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah... I wonder if it has the same 'noise problem' as FriendFeed does... - Johnny
Looks like the type of site where the comments are going to be those of the YouTube variety. - Yolanda
No time/date stamps, which made me a little confused, until I realized the comments were apparently last --> first - MiniMage, enterRUPPted
Does it do machine translation? - Sue - Friendfeed is best
UGLY! No time stamps, can only see one conversation at at time. It think I'll stay here thank-you-very-much! - Jeff P. Henderson
There are currently no fyres about sex. This site is either fake or not of this Internet. - Andy Bakun
Doesn't really compare to Friendfeed as one of the main features of FF is still that it is an aggregator of all things. But there are some nice ideas in there. Will definitely have a look at it again over the coming weeks, hoping they will clean up the interface a bit. To little screen estate for the actual conversation and too much clutter around it. - Mike Hellers
FriendFeed Comment is the new Yelp Talk. This tweet is useless without screenshots. - Tim Jones
Is this a joke? It should be called HeadAyche. - phil baumann
It's ugly yes, but come on guys, say something new. The ability to break sub-conversations out is interesting. They should look at creating new rooms in IRC. - Kartik Agaram
Also, it seems like the conversations are more like IMs between a small number of individuals, seems like a lot of noise and not much true value... Could just be the quality of individuals participating of course... Something to watch, much like Google Wave in 2010 - Chris Reichow
LOL. Was this designed in Front Page? - Spencer
I remember when everyone thought FriendFeed was ugly. - Robert Scoble
Like Friendfeed, Livefyre allows people to join in conversations, but I don't see how it's better organized. I like the idea of kicking somebody off the thread if he/she gets too unruly, but I'm afraid someone might abuse it in the future and the result would be a thread that only the originator of the thread would like. I would rather have haters on a thread to show a semblance of balance. Livefyre's a great tool and hope to see more improvements in the future. - Robert Sanchez Jr
It's better organized because you can find conversations by tags. So I can see only tech conversations. Here on FriendFeed I see all sorts of conversations mixed together. Also, LiveFyre lets you have threaded conversations, which makes long conversations much more useful. - Robert Scoble
Wait, you can still see after looking at that page? - Jimminy, CoG of FF
I think Robert's point is that FF lists only tag *people*, not conversations. - Michael R. Bernstein
hmmm...Michael and Robert has a point there. It takes quite a bit of an effort to search for subjects/topics in Friendfeed/Twitter/Facebook as these seem to be more user-centric sites whereas Livefyre is more of a topic-centric. In Livefyre you can follow a topic instead of a person. - Robert Sanchez Jr
Chris, you probably read it here: http://scobleizer.com/2009... - Bruce Lewis
Interesting how many people are focused on the look rather than the substance. This site has a lot of potential. - Josh Fialkoff
A comment to the effect that it was odd not to see a fire about sex impelled me to try to start one: "What do you think about sex? Join my conversation happening now on #LiveFyre http://su.pr/1LBCYf " - Sue - Friendfeed is best
The site certainly needs UI help, but we're having a great discussion here: http://livefyre.com/?vrvBkX - Josh Fialkoff
Tags? People have to actually *create* those, and conversations are too throw-away to really have that done well, and avoid spamming (witness hash tags). That said, I have a saved search here on FF that shows me entries that have "protip" in the content, and it updates live. FF not having threaded comments is actually an advantage, it keeps things on topic and encourages creating new root entries as things diverge, or creating a room to centralize stuff on a single topic. - Andy Bakun
They tried to have #journchat on it a little bit ago, and people seemed to have troubles with it. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Enuf Talk! I wanna see Pictures!! - Billy Warhol
The homepage looks awful! But I'll give it a go... - Kol Tregaskes
'Which one is better? FriendFeed or LiveFyre? Let's talk about it.' - http://livefyre.com/?YsrFsZ - Kol Tregaskes
I'll wait for the new UI in 2 weeks, I don't see anything appealing at all. - Kol Tregaskes
Ugly. Also unusable. Why is the actual talk box so narrow? Nothing like endless amounts of scrolling... I call fail. - Otto
We should call this a ScobleRoll. He shamelessly pimps some site and we all flock to it to see what's going on only to find out it's utter rubbish. Next he'll be like, 'Hey, want to have a personalized site where you can share information with your friends while learning valuable web development skills? http://angelfire.com/ is the way to go. Getting a demo now.' - Akiva
DO ANYBODY NO WHY SCOBLE IS USING A DEAD SERVICE TO PIMP ANOTHER SERVICE? - G Dub of the Carolinas
gonna have to vote for FriendFeed - nothing that compelling on LiveFyre yet. - Bill Sanders
Why wouldn't the illusive sex threads be called "bush fyres?" - Jimminy, CoG of FF

50% of US engineering students drop out - Why? - http://dondodge.typepad.com/the_nex...
I am part of the 50% who don't drop out! - Kevin Mohr
I didn't drop out but here is part of my experience in this post from years ago. It was discouraging to hear the professors talk. Needless to say i don't code. :-) http://www.altamirano.org/marketi... - Antonio Altamirano
Thankfully I'm in the other 50%, but I can see why many would change their major or drop out. I saw it first hand where many 1st and 2nd year Mechanical Engineering students changed their majors to something 'easier'. The most common reason was difficulty with the required advanced Math courses. Calculus being the road block for many. - Jeff P. Henderson
If I were entering college now, I would try to go to Olin. I really like their approach. - Paul Buchheit
nice post, I'm looking for the number of engineers (or per thousand capita ratio) graduating in Greece (or greeks graduating around the world) - George Tziralis
In CA we have two types of public universities. The UC schools require the professors to do research, where as the State University schools do not. I think the State University schools are much better for undergrad tech education as you get much more attention from your professors. - Jeff P. Henderson
The UC Berkeley College of Engineering started the Center For Entrepreneurship and Technology http://cet.berkeley.edu to address some of the issues Dodge talks about. - Ruchira S. Datta
Engineering is hard and requires above-average intelligence. Think about it this way: Statistics tells us that probably 50% of people will be below-average. Wouldn't you want those 50% of the students to drop out before actually becoming an engineer? MIT just doesn't admit that half of the population in the first place, but most schools don't have that luxury. - Gabe
People have a lot of options for (a) careers (b) money (c) power (d) image (e) attracting mates in the US, compared to China/India. Engineers are not valued very highly in the US compared to businesspeople, doctors, and lawyers. - Mitchell Tsai
@Gabe: You would think that all the people that go to study Computer Sciences or seek other Engineering degrees are above the 50% average to begin with. - Amit Morson
somestimes it's a scoail or maturity thing - was for me. I get by. Wished I finished. - Alan Wilensky from Alert Thingy
It's because of the fact that people with higher standards of living pursue less demanding challenges offering similar ROI (I = investment+involvement). That's why there's so many non-US students (especially from lower income countries) in engineering and why they're much less inclined to fail. - Nenad Nikolic from twhirl
Engineering sucks. I think there's a point where any engineering student realizes that even with a degree they're looking at a pretty mediocre salary working in a really boring job. Add this to the difficult coursework and boring courses, well, engineers are good at math. It adds up to being a raw deal. That being said, if you get into engineering at Stanford or UC Berkley, your ROI would look a lot better then mine. I'm sure a large number of engineering students consider dropping out, even after Calculus. - Will Higgins™
All I can do is nod. For a couple of years, not a day when by when I didn't consider jumping ship, for all the reasons commenters here have mentioned: long hours, heavy workload, fickle job market, salary barely comparable with what I could expect with a business or law degree. But here I am, a month away from (finally!) finishing my EE degree, and I couldn't be happier. - Derrick Burns
Continued from above: Basically, I think so many give up because they were looking to get something out of being an engineer: money, prestige, etc. But it's simply too great a commitment on several levels. You really have to pursue engineering because it's something you want to do, something you care about. - Derrick Burns
I dropped out because Chemical Engineering was not what I was expecting. I wanted more Chemistry, less Math. I switched to IT Management and found it much more interesting. Mind you, I'm Canadian. - Shey
I remember having a crisis in my final year of Electrical/Computer Engineering. Dropping out was a non-option, but I did consider completely abandoning 3.5 years of engineering study to switch fields and schools during my senior year. In hindsight, I didn't understand what engineers really did. My vision at the time was closer to industrial or product design than engineering. I had to take it on faith in my first two years that I was on a path to do what I was envisioning. - Kelly Norton
I suspect that more than 50% (even at good schools like GATech, I have friends who have done this) are in the wrong field. Many of my friends went into programming because they enjoyed computers and I've told them they would hate it because they don't like math. They don't listen. :) - mjc
still others go into engineering due to parental expectation, which I find ridiculous, but understandable - mjc
Amit: one of the properties of being in the lower 50% is not knowing that you're in the lower 50%. That means many of the applicants do not know they are unqualified. - Gabe
Extensive aptitude/personality testing could fix this - Aaron Eaton
Engineering is a tough subject. how does that compare to other subjects? - John Cass from twhirl
I actually sit on an advisory board for ASU (arizona state) Poly - I can tell you that what I see is students becoming disillusioned by all the stuff they have to learn before they can go out and create something "cool". The challenge is keeping them engaged through the pre-reqs/early coursework. BTW - IMHO the problem with "drop out and learn X" is that they've intentionally skipped the fundamentals that make good engineers. Just because you can code doesn't mean you can engineer... two different things. - Brian Roy
Is Computer Science part of engineering? Because it didn't take much training in Computer Science for me to start doing cool stuff. I wrote my first game and posted it onto the internet my freshman year (Core Wars). By my Junior year, I had designed a programming language and integrated in it into a MUD. Pengtoh had contributed to Linux by his sophomore year. On the other hand, I always flunked electrical engineering classes, and couldn't stomach math past linear algebra. - Piaw Na
I switch from Engineering to a Computer Science degree. Apart from the fact that I wanted to program, there were two reasons. 1) The load was very high (it was close to 40 contact hours/week in first year). 2) The maths was hard - I'm ok at math, but combined with the high load I found I struggled when I wasn't too interested in it. - Nick Lothian
"the US should staple a Green Card to every foreign student's engineering diploma and encourage them to stay in the USA." - Clare Dibble
Same as Nick here. Dropped out due to difficulty and lack of passion for the field. Went back later to finish a BS in Computer Information Systems. - Bill Sanders
I wonder what percentage of medical school students drop out. Engineering is a hard discipline, if you want to be a web dev or a study IT or "new media" instead. Making engineering "softer" because today's students don't like to work hard and expect results instantly will just create generations of mediocre engineers and will not make the US more of an engineering power. - Kevin Goldsmith from twhirl
engineers are boring and dry, pay is low, classes are full of non-social ppl. (and almost no girls). Why not study finance, or something, girls and pay is much better. - imran
Engineering is fun! The big thing is that school's curriculums are frequently irrelevant. For instance, a lot of CS majors require irrelevant Math or Physics not because it's a requirement to do good software (they aren't), but because those classes serve as weeders. The result is, for instance, we get lots of CS majors who can't communicate or string a sentence together. If we rearranged the CS major so that we didn't impose a stupid requirement, we'd get a bigger diversity of candidates and less dropout. - Piaw Na
Engineering is the best!!!! and for those who says it sucks or that the pay is not good (or that we are boring and dry), its probably because you are in that 50% of retards that dropped out of it. No other profession gets paid as much as an engineer right after graduation, and there is usually more demand for engineers than for anything else. I just think people are too lazy to even try anymore. I dont know why, even graduate school is fun in engineering. Aerospace is the best!!!!! - Mike hawk
life in a conceptual box is the result .. content with that, you will stay with it .. not content, universes open up - Gregory Lent
life in a conceptual box? do you even know what you are saying? universes open up when you quit engineering? If only you were to see the world through the eyes of en engineer, we see everything from several different perspectives, not just that of people like you. If anything, engineering has really opened up the world for me as it really is. Stop making those type of remarks. Instead get back to engineering school so you can see what it feels like. - Mike hawk
I think I know the boxes Gregory is talking about from some of his other comments. Whether you've gone to engineering school is orthogonal to whether you can get outside of them. So it's pretty much irrelevant to this thread. - Ruchira S. Datta
At least, those 50% tried. - Ashish
I bet you the pre-med numbers are similar, but I'm not sure universities necessarily track undergrads who aspire to go to med school. In general, how many freshmen actually stick with the major they pick when they start college? - Victor Ganata

Reminds me of the joke about the phases of sex... The 1st kind of sex is Smurf Sex. This kind of sex happens when youfirst meet someone and you both have sex until you are blue in the face. The 2nd kind of sex is Kitchen Sex. This is when you have been withyour partner for a short time and you are so horny you will have sexanywhere, even in the kitchen. The 3rd kind of sex is Bedroom Sex.... more... - Tinfoil 2.0

"1. Patience.  It has never been my strong suit. Yet it is absolutely required to first learn photography, then to exercise what you’ve learned. I used to get frustrated because I couldn’t make the shot happen - the one that I envisioned within my mind’s eye. Now, I try more often (it’s still a work in progress) to let the shot come to me. I wait, and I breathe, and I let things happen organically rather than try to force them. It’s much better for the quality of my photography to allow myself to be in the moment, rather than be in a rush to capture the moment." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet

How easy is it for US citizens to get dual citizenships (or whatever the appropriate documentation in order to work & live for extended periods) in western European nations?
EU - European Union map B.gif
tell ya what, we'll do swapsies ;) - alphaxion
last i heard, the US wasn't allowing dual citizenships except under special circumstances. maybe that's changed? - Joe The Sausage
The US allows dual citizenship, the problem lies in taking the oath, which states that you only pledge allegiance to the United States, thereby renouncing your citizenship of your country of origin. There are countries in Europe that give its citizen the one-time allowance to do so. - Rene, Pro Button Pusher
I've always found the pledge in any country to be a rediculous throwback from centuries past. Why bother "pledging allegiance" when you could just as easily renounce it. - alphaxion
Then how do so many Americans spend years working and living abroad? There's an easy, legal, non-citizeny way to do this, one assumes. - Anthony Citrano
work visas, permanent resident status and so on. - Joe The Sausage
It's different from country to country, but most has similar to U.S. H1-B visas and even analog of green cards (only with less long waiting lines/processing time). The main point is — most allow you to live for a long time there if you have an external source to support yourself (i.e. not taking work from locals, but spending money instead and could prove that — renting out your house in Silicon Valley and spending that in Europe or just a huge checking account will make you welcomed there.) - earlyadopter
