My mouth dropped when I saw this. Unbelievably idiotic of them to not have a backup! Are they trying to commit tech suicide.
- Nile Flores
Wow. I can't believe they didn't bother to backup this data, what were they thinking!? I'm only 17 and I know that I need a backup for EVERYTHING important!
- Nathan Snyder
Most of service, they don't user to take self backup.

1. Let me enable/disable signatures at the click of a button. I don't want Gmail always to display my signature. Some people don't always need to know who I am.
- Tamar Weinberg
2. Let me undelete an email I may have accidentally deleted from the Spam folder. At least, give me 5 seconds to realize that I screwed up and hit Z to undo. It should work just like the feature that lets me unsend emails for a 5 second duration.
- Tamar Weinberg
3. If I have multiple email addresses that all go into my gmail account and I respond from XXX@domain.com, please do not show the "From" line to be "From: mygmailaddress@gmail.com on behalf of XXX@domain.com". It looks stupid. Further, if Gmail wants to actually *control* my email addresses, it doesn't tempt me to want to utilize this super cool feature.
- Tamar Weinberg
4. If you're letting us use POP for other email accounts, pull the email from ALL folders on that account, not just the Inbox. I'm literally moving ALL my emails out of the folders I created within Hotmail and throwing them into the Inbox just so Gmail can find and subsequently store the emails. If this is not a limitation of the POP protocol, please address.
- Tamar Weinberg
Allen, that's been a request for eleventy billion years. I think Gmail thinks labels are sufficient.
- Tamar Weinberg
I could come up with supporting subscription via IMAP. Currently Gmail duplicates e-mails as they go into the All Mail "folder" as well as in the folders that simulate labels. In the end - I don't want to see "All Mail" on my IMAP client at all.
- Oliver Bouchard
5. This is more of a bug than a request but when I have emails selected via the check box and then hit the "S" to star the email, it applies the star to a completely different email (the first in the Inbox).
- Tamar Weinberg
The folders issue is complicated. Gmail can make labels behave as much like folders as possible, but you can't have folders and conversation threading. They're mutually incompatible unless you want a conversation jerked out of the folder and into the inbox whenever a reply comes in, or you want replies to miss the inbox and get buried in the folder.
- Kevin Fox
6. If I have an email selected that has a label and select 3 more unlabeled emails but want to apply the same label to the 3, let me do that without removing that label first. I know that if you select bold and unbold text in an app like MS Word and then press Ctrl B, the bold will go away until you Ctrl+B it (in which case everything becomes bold), but the process is lengthier on Gmail and it would be smart to assume that you want to actually label all of the selected emails.
- Tamar Weinberg
7. Muting doesn't work very well for two reasons: (a) sometimes I mute emails and can't figure out how to unmute them. I move them to the Inbox but it still is labeled as "Muted"; (b) Gmail claims that emails get muted unless you're the *actual* recipient of the emails (as in it's being sent to your gmail account). Sometimes, people just want to shut that off. Let them.
- Tamar Weinberg
8. Let me search emails that were sent between a specific date. Really, that should be simple.
- Tamar Weinberg
9. Make search operators easy to find, perhaps in the shortcut window (or an extension of that) when you press the ? key. I want to know that label:unread means that I can find unread emails. I also want to know how to find emails with PDF attachments.
- Tamar Weinberg
10. I'd like to sort search results and other emails by size if possible so that I can find problematic emails and ensure that my account stays under quota.
- Tamar Weinberg
(More to be added to this thread as I experience or remember them. Would love for FF folks to add to this list!)
- Tamar Weinberg
html / image-enabled signatures. some very good bookmarklets already do the job, but make it native!
- Jean-Charles VERDIE
5 isn't a bug. The 's' shortcut is defined as "add a star to the thread that is currently selected by the cursor." The cursor is the small solid black arrow next to a message in your inbox. To see where the cursor is, press 'j' and 'k' while looking at your inbox and you should see it move around.
- Chieze Okoye
Also, I just tested and 6 doesn't seem to happen. If you select emails where some have a specific label and others don't, then click the 'Label' button and choose that label, the first click of the label changes the state from "some have the label" to "all have the label." The second click then goes to "none have the label."
- Chieze Okoye
Also, regarding #8, you can do so by using the operators "in:sent before:yyyy/mm/dd after:yyyy/mm/dd" I think. But your subsequent point in #9 is well taken. It should be easier, definitely, to find the search operators, but they have improved discovery of those operators significantly if you turn on the "Search Autocomplete" labs feature, which you may not have known about. That thing is brilliant.
- Chieze Okoye
1, 2, 3, 7, and 10 (though I've never even come close to my quota), I definitely agree with you on. I don't use POP, so I don't really care about 4, but it's a good point.
- Chieze Okoye
Chieze, thanks for that re#5 - makes sense but is definitely not intuitive. And re#8 - so frustrating that there aren't dropdown menus or search features for that. Why should one have to remember those operators? I'll have to try that labs feature.
- Tamar Weinberg
No, 1 - awesome, I agree with you. Gmail is Gmail but don't want to see any similarity with Yahoo's email service - Yahoo Mail service totally sucks, whatever folder or anything. No. 8 - I'm looking this features too. As well, "I'm looking, when suddenly someone watching to the screen, if Gmail's Mail is open, then within a click I can fade all things or by another click I can move to normal view" I don't like, when someone seeing my Open Mail Box. Thanks
- Technology News
Tamar, no problem! 8^) I do agree with you on the intuitiveness.
- Chieze Okoye
#3 is a bug in Outlook (it doesn't show up that way anywhere else).
- Michael Leggett
Michael, are you sure? I'm sure I've seen that in the Gmail interface itself.
- Tamar Weinberg
I think you only see #4 in 'quoted text' in Gmail - we sent from an Outlook client. I don't think there's a way for Gmail to fix this.
- Joel
Integrate Friendfeed/Google Social Graph API. When I compose a mail, or view a thread, show the combined Friendfeed of all participants. I want context.
- Lars Trieloff
@Tamar - agree, need the ability to quickly specify a signature including no signature at all. Outlook and Apple Mail both allow for this and makes a huge difference.
- Mayuresh Walke
"I don't think there's a way for Gmail to fix this." Why's that? Is it because of how Gmail handles the headers of the email? I guess that means they should "fix up" the headers.

Search isn't over, but maybe the monetization of search is over. Is there another way for anyone to make money on search? And can anyone really compete with Google? I don't see how. Of course this has happened before. Remember Alta Vista?

Funny, Ethan (who has been a jerk to me over and over) works for a music company. Why don't all those musicians just write and edit? Geesh, I bring people conversations that they would LOVE to have face-to-face and they just key in on the crappy video quality that comes from doing it live with a cell phone. I could say something about the crappy music that the music industry has brought us lately, but I won't.

Seems that companies want touchpoints with influencers, which is why they advertise on blogs. There's gotta be a better way, but we haven't really found it yet.

Most companies who do Web sites don't use these tools and they really should. So should most bloggers before they start blogging (helps focus your content and think about how people will find you on search engines)
