The Entrepreneur’s Handbook – 59 Resources For First Time Entrepreneurs
As a first time entrepreneur you probably have tons of questions. And every time you do a Google search for an answer you are bombarded with too much information and in some cases that information contradicts other things you have heard. Due to this, I have created a list of 54 resources that should help you out. - Neil Patel is the co-founder of 2 Internet companies: Crazy Egg, and KISSmetrics. - Christopher Harley from Bookmarklet

I like it when people do that - I've gotten some really cool music from that. You can always hide it though. (comment via Disqus by jessestay) - Jesse Stay
Since Ping.fm came into my life Twitter is not all that important to me anymore. It is just one of the many microblogging services and certainly not the best. That said, it does have a huge amount of users and is probably the best microblogging service to start with. (comment via Disqus by Rutger Blom) - Jesse Stay

What's embarrassing: When we go to the store and one of the kids, get concerened, "You didn't get beer (or wine)" and I say, "That's right." or somthing flippant and they freak out, practically yelling, "Mama, buy some beer!" - Anika
Freudian slip by placing both items in same isle ;) We don't have that problem in PA - beer sold at beer store, wine sold at State Store. - Janet
I don't know about baby, but dkb needs beers and wines ... - dkb

Early: Companies Deputizing Their Employees as Brand Managers - http://bhc3.wordpress.com/2008...
The distinction between "working for the company" and "acting as the company" is incredibly important and something most newcomers to social media don't get. All it takes is one slip-up from a person for the latter to backfire spectacularly. If a person is going to represent the company in social media, they need to have the same responsibility and ability to get things done that they would offline. Relegating the management of your brand to just anyone in the company is bad, bad, bad. - Mark Trapp
I like the chart comparing Intel's and IBM's social policies, Hutch. You always do a great job of delivering deep yet readable analyses. I'd love to see a similar policy released at my company! - Daniel J. Pritchett
Mark - you're hitting on an important point. Assuming you're a professional, and you talk about things that you do for your company, you are identified with that company. IBM and Intel figure it's going to happen, let's see how we can manage it. - Hutch Carpenter
And one more follow-up...Charlene Li says much the same thing here: http://blog.altimetergroup.com/2008... - Hutch Carpenter
And thanks Daniel! This is the kind of info I'd pull together in a PowerPoint, locked inside a company somewhere. Blogging lets you put it out there publicly and engage others. So cool. - Hutch Carpenter
Hutch, "with", but not "as". Both IBM and Intel, in their disclaimers, recognize that you cannot have employees speaking as the company, that they are separate entities that work for the company. I know this is something Robert Scoble has had to deal with in both Microsoft and Fast Company, and the example of @comcastcares Charlene mentions is actually a pullback from the original... more... - Mark Trapp
For companies, it's a CYA, but for the consumer, this should be a distinction of openness: you're talking to a specific person who works for a company, not the faceless company itself. For example, having any and all employees be able to speak as ConnectBeam, and create ConnectBeam accounts and profiles all over the place and speak as though they are the company ConnectBeam is poor... more... - Mark Trapp
There you go Mark - well put. It's this funny zone where you form an impression of a company based on the knowledge, interactions and conduct of its employees. They're not formally conducting branding exercises. But the employees are contributing to brand perception. - Hutch Carpenter
V - I don't think you even need savvy. What I like about IBM and Intel is they're essentially saying, "Go for it. But here are our expectations for behavior." - Hutch Carpenter
Gregory - you're so right! Internal culture does need to be there. Lots of companies are still on the "ban social media sites" part of the spectrum. - Hutch Carpenter

Remember the scene in "Big" where Tom Hanks keeps saying "I don't get it" to the toy presentation? Well, "I don't get it". - Chris Stevenson
You can *tell* (ask?) it to refresh every X minute but it, uh, doesn't. Pondering. - techPR
Great Tom Hanks reference in "Big". - Kevin Whalen
I am still yet to check out PeopleBrowsr - Joe Dawson
I like the idea but found that the UI still needs some polishing. - Davide D'Incau
Still needs work. I see the value in it, but it is slow...and odd to add panes. - Kreg Steppe
Geez, and I thought FF was overwhelming when I first signed in... - ronin
The really need to work on some of the usability / features around the non-twitter services. - Chip Childers
I just tried it out. At first glance I don't see any value here. Then again I don't really use Twitter very much. I couldn't find any interesting FF integration and got nothing from the Flickr integration. Maybe I'm just not using it right though. - Thomas Hawk
They need to pare down the number of features - much of what is there outside of twitter offers little to no clear value. That said, the twitter stuff has potential. - Andy Roth
+1 Thomas Hawk - wasn't impressed - William Harryman
Their UI is action packed and they have some great ideas implemented for grouping and messaging. I could see it being useful even if if you're not a power user. - Thropic
This looks fantastic! Thanks for the heads-up! - Flora from twhirl
Had a try with it this morning and it reckoned my name on FriendFeed and Flickr was Mohamed. Very strange... - Martin Bryant
Lovin' it so far - Charlie Anzman
I love the search feature, grouping, bulk messaging and the richness of user profiles. Definitely a fun app to hang out and explore in. - Maria Sipka
I loved it the minute I saw it... impressive concept, design and functionality. Needs on-screen UIX helps so users can easily navigate - too complex. I am very app savvy and had a hard time getting my way around ALL the features... I think I've got about 70% covered. The panes are a "pain" to use - Susan Beebe
Chokes on my primary browser. Not a fan of Flash. Seeing what other networks other people are on is interesting, although if they're on FF, then you can see that already. - Victor Ganata
great for alpha release...performance a little slow, but I like the concept - Tom Mack
I do like it, but the group function did not function as I expected. I tried sending to a group, but it just created a bunch of twitter messages with @ signs and just a part of my message. Will have to play a bit more. - Kenley Neufeld
Great interview, Robert. I'm excited to try this service. Is it something you're using on a daily basis? - Devon Campbell
Nice job Video man .... :) - Charlie Anzman
Cute, but slow and clumsy interface - Nick
Not impressed. Confusing and hard to use. Keep it simple. - David Jacobs
It definitely has potential, but at this point it has a clumsy UI and some performance/stability issues (understandable in an alpha). Does anyone else agree that it is just plain hard to beat the simplicity of the FF RealTime UI for following and participating in conversations? - Robert Clockedile
...Perhaps FF should just let us drop our other social streams into the RealTime interface. Add cross-service posting, a la Posterous or Ping.fm, and that would be the killer app - Robert Clockedile
Trying this now...thanks. - Jen
Thanks for all the comments re PeopleBrowsr. Great feedback. We are working on UI and performance. And we improved the Groups feature. We use 'Live' tweets and messages from our Google Group http://groups.google.com/group... to shape PeopleBrowsr in real time. The Alpha Release is updated every day. Very welcome all your ideas. Eat Like You're Poor So the Poor Can Eat - http://stupidblogger.tumblr.com/post...
Tina, you know...you have inspired me. In December, I am going to eat like a poor person and donate that money to these poor children in Africa using a charity who won't take all the money for "administrative purposes." Wonderful post. - Shevonne

@Shevonne Could you tell me what charity will do that? Seems like all the big charities pay their employees more than feed people. - Neal Jansons
@Steve, shocking that your employer doesn't want you doing non-work things on company time... ;) - Soup
neal, you can use charitynavigator.org to see how much a group spends on programs vs. administration vs. fundraising, although it's not comprehensive. - Rachel Walden
@Soup, then what the hell am I supposed to do? - Steve C
@shevonne not sure where you live, but I suspect that there are a bunch of people a lot closer to you than Africa that could use your donation. Not that donating to Africa is bad, but don't forget about the people nearby. - Kenton
Kenton, after I typed that, I thought about the children near me and decided to give to them first. =) - Shevonne
Shevonne, is there a particular way you picked your local charity? - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Eat like I'm poor? Okay, I'm going to McDonald's. - Morton Fox
Morton, I don't think you'll make it on $175 a month if you eat at McDonald's - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
<sarcasm> Meh... Easier and more efficient to just eat the poor... <sarcasm> - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
roflmao @ Mark, curbside dining? - Janet
Lovely post Tina. I reckon I can do $175 a month, no problem. Mark didn't close his tags properly. This makes me sad, sad panda :( - Mo Kargas
Mo you realize the first one turns it off, right? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I realise nothing .. :D - Mo Kargas
Mo, think you're going to try it? I think I can give it a go starting in January... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Sometimes I eat like I'm poor, because I have no money. And then I wish I lived in a third world nation where the European standard of no money will feed you for a month or more! - Daniel W. Crompton
Daniel, I think lots of people in the US think the same way you do (well, the first part). However, there's a difference between eating like you're poor and eating poorly and the two don't have to be one in the same. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Thanks for this one, Tina. I know bloggers and Internet users can change things, for eg. here in Madagascar (the country, not the movie!). Some malagasy bloggers are beginning to do some amazing job in order to help people. I'd like to add that $1 (USD) can help 3 kids (more!?!?) to eat. I'm just readying myself to go to a lil' restaurant: it'll cost me... $1. - Thierry R. Andriamirado

"Another big learning was that, for most companies, the average cost of moving a customer from the second most loyal to the most loyal category was extremely small while the cost of going from a new customer to the most loyal customer was often a money losing proposition. That is, the costs of acquisition exceed lifetime value, on average. Most companies focus on customer acquisition way too much! Even very early stage businesses are best served by having evangelists amongst their early adopters." - Hutch Carpenter
I am always flabbergasted when companies do special offers for new customers that arent available to existing customers. That is so short sighted, and it does make existing customers feel fleeced. Not a good idea. - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
