We have received numerous reports of excessive FriendFeed posts showing up in Facebook this evening. While we are not 100% sure, it appears to be an issue on Facebook's end due to ignoring application settings. We have disabled all FriendFeed updates to Facebook until we are sure the problem is resolved.
See http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... for more information - it seems to also have impacted Twitter's Facebook app. Again, we are not sure if it is a problem on our end or not, but we are investigating now.
- Bret Taylor
No problem, if I knew it was on your end, I wouldn't have cared, but thanks for letting me know about the situation. I was confused because it happened right as I was trying out a new twitter game. This was compounded by the fact that the game has no controls for turning off public messages. I'll bet they plan to add them later, but right now they want everyone to hear about it. It’s a...

So, is it fixed?Every tweet, every everything is showing up as individual news feed posts for all my friends, this is too much and I'm likely to piss them all off. Options ... 1.Stop tweeting etc. 2.Ditch the FF Facebook application. Hmmm, it's a no brainer. Anyone got any updates on this?
- Michael M Bailey
Our data center (SVColo) performed an upgrade to their core network switch this evening. Something went wrong, and the operation took 30 minutes instead of 5. We apologize for the problem.
Jason: we would love to host FriendFeed but any hoster will screw up from time to time so I would rather win their business on the strength of our technology and service. Our CEO puts his personal cell phone out there (I don't know of any other hosting company CEO that does that, plus mine is +1-425-205-1921). not to mention I have some major motivation to make sure FriendFeed stays up. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Compete with Wave and let people run their own Friendfeed servers.
- Vezquex
Thanks! I almost sent SOS via Twitter...but u guys were fast! :D
- Roshan Ramachandran
Oh, and it was nice of you guys to arrange your downtime for when I was flying and off the net! :-)
- Robert Scoble
The upside is I saw the 'new and improved' twitter web interface for the first time. When do I have time to do that normally :D
- Micah
@scoble, that's just it. I've only known Rackspace to screw up once and it was due to some guy driving a car into the data center. Plus, all the other perks you mentioned.

I thought IntenseDebate had recently complained about their own spam problem as well. Has anyone compared Disqus, IntenseDebate and JS-Kit Echo with regards to spam control?
- Rob Diana
Rob, I have been hearing great things about JS-Kit. I'm heavily leaning towards it.
- Mike Fruchter
Disqus is toast on my blog. It's spam riddled beyond belief.
- Mike Fruchter
There is no mechanism in place to detect 50 spam comments being left back to back on different posts from the same IP. Surely they need to do something about this. I have been a Disqus backer since day one, but this is the final straw.
- Mike Fruchter
That is a shame as I know they are definitely trying to curb the issue. I hope they can break through whatever issue they are having.
- Rob Diana
JS-Kit is looking better and better every minute.
- Mike Fruchter
Rob, yea I agree. By now they should have there act together though. They are very behind the curb.
- Mike Fruchter
Disqus cannot handle even the most obvious forms of spam. Which is too bad, because I love their API and generally like their service.
- Carter ♥ HTML5
Yeah, I went with Intense Debate and never worried about Disqus again.
- Spencer
I'm in about the same place. I'm thinking about moving back to WP and Akismet.
- EricaJoy
Hi Mike, any new experiences with JS-Kit? Had (almost) no spam up till now
- Jeroen De Miranda
You may be a few days too soon - the new Disqus launches this week with improved spam support. Also, have you added your Akismet key to your settings in Disqus? They just added that recently.
- Jesse Stay
I'd like less hype out of Disqus and more product improvement.
- Cliff Gerrish
I looked at JS-Kit, installed and could not import my comments. No reply from their support either. I installed Intense Debate and so far so good. Plenty of bells and whistles. I installed Akismet with it as well and no spam has gotten through. Impressed so far with ID!
- Mike Fruchter
I just turned on moderation for any comment with a link and required registration + confirmation for commenting. Temporary solution until I can switch to something else.
- EricaJoy
I had tried ID several months ago; at that time I ran into some serious bugs (like comments from one blog appearing on another blog). Guess those bugs have been ironed out in the mean time. Good to see competition and probably more diffentiation, that is best for all users!
- Jeroen De Miranda
I haven't had any spam issues with Disqus + Akismat
- andy brudtkuhl
ID and Disqus both support Akismet at the moment. Disqus added Akismet sometime last week IIRC. I switched from Disqus to ID and back in the last few months - it was a relatively painless process!

Way to start her on the best platform, I'm surprised she's not blogging already.
- Wayne Sutton
Make sure you start her off with wordpress or posterous :)
- Wayne Sutton
Twitter + Worpdress + MacBook Air = "Look Who's Talkin'" :P
- Adam Jackson
Never too young to start, but she should start with microblogging before she moves up to full blogging. Get her a Twitter account and let her bang on the keyboard just like 5 yr old @miamalarkey and make sure you archive those tweets for posterity.
- April
louis - the economy is bad - i got mouths to feed - i would be open to talking to sarah - she seems more the blogger type - matthew likes to apparently beat people up

"Posterous is doing great, I am listening some good news very week, but posterous is still a time pass platform, it could not make its identity as a core blogging platform till now. People use it for posting RSS, photos and short updates."

"MySpace is ready to back in mainstream again, one after one good news about MySpace will make it promising again. ILikes app on Facebook is rocking."
- Madhav Tripathi
Because just like in high school, sometimes the sweaty jock who doesn't wash his hands after using the john still gets the best girl - while those of us who carried her books and wrote her poetic love letters and timed our walking to go by her locker at just the right time find ourselves on the outside looking in again." You nailed it Louis!
- DJ Stevie Steve
Nice post, Louis. Was waiting to see what you'd write. :)
- Kali
My immediate reaction was Facebook will push ads onto their users. I think FriendFeed could be seriously screwed up with live moving ads, so that's hopefully out of the picture from a purely usability view. Friendfeed is all about realtime web information. I then wonder how in that case will the monetise the relationship. My guess? Facebook will show live conversations and hopefully they will rip out the poor IM implementation in Facebook. The purchase may be nothing more sinister, I hope...
- Mark Aitken
Well said Louis. This is the big question.
- Mark Krynsky
Okay, so now I'm ready to cry. Excellent post, Louis. Thank you!
- Ladyepiphanybug
Excellent, you've captured my sentiment very well. Mark - I disagree. FF is an excellent platform for floating ads based upon our behavior, and it is just about the only platform in existence where the algorithms for ad placement could have been done right - and welcomed.
- JCunwired
Louis's reaction is the one I most wanted to see. Thanks for not disappointing us, man!
- Daniel J. Pritchett
"FriendFeed is the one that has a 4.0 GPA and had big dreams of an Ivy League diploma. And yet, she ends up with you - the Silicon Valley equivalent of your local state school. When you come rolling in with your heavy car, big wheels and pumping bass, we don't care how much money you say you're worth - we still don't trust your grin when you open the door and say "hop in"."
- anna sauce
I'm *loving* the high school stereotypes as metaphor, btw.
- anna sauce
jcunwired - I hope it's unobtrusive, don't mind people making money, but lets hope it's sensible. My worst fear is FF is seen as a threat and silenced, but I'd doubt Zuckerberg would be so brash..

I just learned about this minutes ago. Louis it's not 4 big companies. there will only be three after Microsoft merges/acquires Facebook and Google buys Twitter. This move makes perfect sense for Facebook and it's what their SocialTV initiative needed to really work. I see big things for it in Facebook's future. I don't know how I feel about it though!
- Michael Fidler
Somebody wrote that this is just about getting FF's tech talent. Don't you love how all these social networks conveniently forget who it is who makes them valuable?
- Dawn
That was a very enjoyable read :) And the point about bright startups having dim perspectives at the end is alas the truth at the moment: you have to be able to bootstrap your finance, have revenue from the start (membership, affiliates, whatever) that funds your growth. Or find a way to get sold to the big boys (although there are big boys outside the immediate industry that might...

Louis - that post is awesome... I just laughed out load with that one... nice!!!

I had suggested facebook to buy friendfeed in one my blog post.
- Madhav Tripathi
Terrific article Louis, best I have read on this deal so far.

Life streaming via Friendfeed I always felt like a kind of a partner investing something of me in something greater... Now I discover that this investment counts for nothing. No one was or is committed to keep the style and special features that made Friendfeed attractive in the first place. No one is committed or loyal to the user base and the investment of life talent and prestige...

it seems the tweet count reset after the outage as well
- Terry Bruce
they would be silly to alter FF drasticly, one of the key benefits of buying it, isn't the tech, thats reproducable, its got to be the user base.. so they ain't gona do anything that pisses us off too much..
- Nathan Vingoe
Maybe you're in the dog house. My tweets show up in FriendFeed within about 15 seconds.
- Mark Trapp
Twitter was down. I think Facebook is more concerned about Google Wave than Twitter. If Google Wave is a success, Facebook's time on site will diminish. FriendFeed is forward thinking enough to introduce features/tools to Facebook that will defend against Wave.

and what fun will follow - if it's like throwing the gauntlet online?

"Sadly, Knol just never panned out. Google should just end its misery, just like it did when it killed other under-performing projects such as Lively and Google Notebooks. Knol will never come close to Wikipedia. It can’t even cut it as a classifieds listing site."
- Ryan - @magicofpi
from Bookmarklet
Yet another example of a Google project that either went nowhere or jumped the tracks (missed its intended purpose). Hopefully this serves as a reminder to those who hype every Mountain View development as if it's going to take over the world. Google fails too sometimes. Every company does.
- LANjackal
We need competition for Wikipedia, and Google would do well just to keep Knol alive, everything can bring some results given enough time, I think Knol is too young for that, I guess it appeared only a couple of months ago?
- TrafficBug
I think the point of the article is that it's NOT competition for Wikipedia, regardless of what Google intended
- LANjackal
from IM
But dont you think of a Knol when somebody deletes your page off Wikipedia, a place to turn to when you dont like Wikipedia anymore? That would be competition right?
- TrafficBug
No I don't. Most people outside of geekdom don't even know Knol exists, period
- LANjackal
from IM
A user-edited encyclopedia benefits from having as large of a user base as possible to keep the information in it accurate and timely. So I'm not sure creating competitors to Wikipedia will either be beneficial or successful in the long run. It seems like something that would lower the quality of both Wikipedia and its competitor. ... Not surprised to see Knol struggling.
- John (bird whisperer)
I never opened an account in Knol, my decision was good.
- Madhav Tripathi
Really o_O? I used this time the integrated 'automated' update feature, because lack of time...and on my side, i have to say, the update worked like a charm. No error messages, running perfect

I'm still holding onto the idea of creating a mailing list for FriendFeed users. One can then use the advanced features of their email clients to implement hide, lists, etc.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
I'm totally ReTweeting this...wait...no need, Google already has the scoop! ^_^v

"real-time". Are you saying they're indexing information delivered in real-time? e.g. long polling, comet-ish or xmpp? Or just that they're polling more often and making results available sooner?
- Darren
I can't wait for google wave. Robert, can you get me an invite?
- Craig Shipp
Craig, trust me, you'll change your tune once you've used it. :)
- Darren
i rekon google have a special feed from ff, ff pushing to google, otherwise it will create a lot of useless load to see what has changed - isn't that what google was trying to do with twitter?
- simran
Darren: I have no idea. I just know that Google used to take weeks to get items into its index and now is getting them there in seconds. Anyone know how they are doing this, or are they just indexing FriendFeed very quickly?
- Robert Scoble
Zee: I took a slightly more direct route with my keywords ~ http://www.google.co.uk/search... ...I still think you're right, the title should be enough to find the post.
- CannonGod
If they are doing something in the real-time space it would certainly be exciting. I like having Bing around. Hopefully it'll continue to spark competition around small, innovative features in an effort to out "cool" the other.
- Darren
Wow, they're really gunning after Bing's psuedo social-media search. This can only be good for the future of search...hopefully!
- Steve Farnworth
Wade: Hurrah! This is great news for companies who want to get indexed through keeping an active blog/community through FriendFeed. Fuck buying AdSense keywords :]
- CannonGod
hope no, hope that sneaky marketers will not try to screw the system and they can't do, hope that (BTW let make the supposition that FF index is integrated in Google hmm Google buying FF?!!)
- abdellah
Abdellah: Absolutely - let's all vote: Google should only index posts with a threshold of comments/likes. That's an easy way to stem the spammers who set & forget their FriendFeed with a gazillion RSS feeds to all their spam sites...
- CannonGod
it's not real time! it's highly related with the links through that thread about Kevin Fox. Since Scoble is being followed by thousands of people, the link of the thread is revealed by googlebot very quickly and in a very short time google sees hundreds of links to this thread so it's directly indexed in google's search results. a few thousand internal link is enough for get a url indexed in such a short time.
- Eren Baydemir
It's not indexing Twitter in real time that's for sure. I just "Googled" some of my recent tweets to no avail.
- JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
Holden: my posts continually show up within minutes. I've been testing this for a while. But I've also been watching others on FriendFeed and they show up slower, so you're right. Plus my FriendFeed URL has better Google Juice so mine show up higher than others do (I have more inbound links to my account and more links from people with a high amount of Google Juice).
- Robert Scoble
I guess we just figured out why Google sees value in hosting a PubSubHubBub hub! Tim Bray was asking about this yesterday, but the real value is being able to know when anyone updates their content and feeding that directly into the indexers.
- Eric Florenzano
gotta watch what you write on here now since it's getting to be indexed faster.
- Seth Goldstein
Kent Courtney is now in the mix. friendfeed has made the big time!
- Craig Shipp
I have seen this on a few sites, namely donationcoder.com and my own blog. At donationcoder, someone will post a question on the forum, I get the popup notification less than 15 seconds later (I am a moderator there and have special tools to make job easier), then I'll do a quick google search for answer and find the forum post on page 1 already. I have google alerts set up for anything mentioning my blog and I usually get an email less than 3 minutes after I make a post, linking to the post I just made.
- April
For me, Google's ability to quickly index comments on Friendfeed seems more interesting than yet another index of Tweets like twitturly

the downside: you find an unfamiliar word in a post, google for it, and — tada! — come up with that very post at the top of the result page. sorta makes the 'I'm feeling lucky' button less useful :)

When it comes to really fast indexing of "normal" blog posts I think it's the PubSubHubbub integration in Feedburner that Google uses for indexing really fast. I noticed that with my blogs using feedburner. Really cool.

What will the blackhat SEO experts, the SM spammers, and the social media experts do during a widespread outage? The answer is obvious: While sitting out the crisis they're fine-tuning their methodology. Seriously, your question offends me. There's a gazillion of SEO experts out there who do not abuse social media.
- Sebastian
Sebastian there can't be a gazillion SEO experts! What's 10,000 keywords times 20?? (and that's being generous!)
- Arleen Boyd
Would a social media expert consider it to be a crisis? If they rely so heavily on just one or two tools that it's enough to throw them into a tizzy, their expert status would seem to me to be ... questionable, at best.
- Gord McLeod
Arleen, 10,000 keyword phrases times 20 is a tiny fraction of the search terms that are worth optimizing for. Think of the long tail. Also, consider lots of webmasters and even publishers / site owners / bloggers / Web developers ... SEO experts who are able to optimize their stuff quite successfully but don't sell or publish their expertise. Many of them, and even many SEO consultants, do make sensible use of social media, as plain users.
- Sebastian
Gord, in a social media spammer's book 2 hours of outage, IOW 2 hours w/o sales from sneakily distributed links to questionable sales pitches, can sum up to way more than a good day's beer money. ;) However, "crisis" might be a term too strong for this potential loss.

- Mark J Colonel Colonic
Robert, admit it, you broke Twitter by massively unfollowing people. The DDoS attack reports have just been a ruse to cover up the fact that you were the backbone of Twitter all this time.
