"self-hosted wordpress for general blogging, hands down. posterous for live-blogging. tie them together and you're golden. where's the actual poll here?"
- Glenn Batuyong
"just a friendly reminder to someday add subdirectory support! Thousands of files in one single directory makes for incredibly painful management for admins and the filesystem. and please someday make replacement of files possible from the Document interface (more intuitive for search purposes). thanks!"
- Glenn Batuyong
"LOL I don't know if it's the platform lacking the power or if the developers are just sub-par... the Twitter clients for Blackberry are pitifully primitive. It's like reliving ANSI pictures in DOS."
- Glenn Batuyong
"yeah Tweetie 2 has some SERIOUS bugs that should be obvious from everyday use... the first that comes to mind is the "time warp" bug that, even after a relaunch, makes it forget that you've already seen mentions and DMs long time ago, yet it insists you have new ones... plus it is obsessively fixated-- scrolled to an old position or stuck on a particular viewpane on relaunch even if you quit from elsewhere in a previous launch. There was once where I added a Twitter account and Tweetie 2 would refuse to keep it until I did a number of lock/unlocks, quits, relaunches, ritual sacrifices and shaman dances."
- Glenn Batuyong
My understanding is that crushing blows aren't a consideration anymore, but more avoidance will certainly still help.
- Victor Ganata
right, but as far as not being critted, you should just be able to keep holy shield up all the time, and thus worry a lot less about other stats, I think
- mjc
Not necessarily because you can't rely on Holy Shield always being available to you. If the tank is silenced or gets even slightly off on their Holy Shield/Consecrate/Judge/Seal rotation, you lose that block increase from the Holy Shield. And it only takes one tiny dip in your block to land a solid crit on the tank and cause major damage. It's better to be safe than sorry by maintaining that defense cap and not relying solely on spells.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
So what do I start stacking next? Block? Dodge? Parry? +STA? Armor? Or more defense?
- Victor Ganata
Once you hit the uncritable threshold, you're probably done with defense for now: now, when you get new gear, you want to make sure you don't go too much over (unless stacking for avoidance or mitigation) and you don't want to ever not be uncritable. I've been using http://elitistjerks.com/f76... as a reference, but you have two options: stack for survival (including avoidance), or stack threat.
- Mark Trapp
One thing to consider is that, barring anyone's alts, you're the only tank, so unless you're going to build a special set for each type of encounter (mitigation, damage soaking, avoidance, threat), stacking anything besides defense to get to the uncritable cap is probably not realistic. Maybe a good thing to try using is TankPoints, which will weigh all the stats and provide at least a general guideline as to what's an upgrade for you.
- Mark Trapp
Do whatever it takes to keep that defense capped. You'll find that as you swap out and upgrade gear, you'll have to play some occasional re-gemming/re-enchanting games to balance your defense back out. It's not fun but it's SO necessary. Your other goal is to stack stam as much as you can. Too bad you didn't go with JC as one of your professions, as they have JC-only +stam gems that are...

just make sure you can tank. everything will work out from there haha
- Glenn Batuyong
Well, if I ever learn how to make money from the AH with my BS skill, I can always drop mining and learn JC :) How long do you think it'll be before we can all run ToC? :D
- Victor Ganata
I've been pugging ToC 5-man regularly: it's about as hard as a heroic, if not a little easier. It seems to be more about dps and healing than it is about tanking; you're probably fine as you are right now to tank it.
- Mark Trapp
Yeah, ToC 5-man is fairly easy. Definitely about the DPS and heals. If you have shit heals, then you're going to do a major face-plant during the Black Knight encounter, guaranteed. I've seen what awful healers can do to a perfectly functional ToC run. We kicked one guy after our third wipe on Black Knight and ended up 4-manning it with our cat switching to tree. Piece of cake. That...

grats! Late to convo so not much else to add. I'm sure you'll get your tanking skills down. Just gotta keep going to stuff and practice.

"If this could somehow replace their gawd-awful Groupwise adventure, I'm all for it. Ditch their proprietary setup and go full-bore into business-oriented collaboration software built on Google Wave technology. This should give them that 0.1% chance to be relevant again. Yeah, when's the last time you heard about Novell in a progressive company?"

"At what point do we need to stop tweeting, liveblogging, and taking photos ...and start acting like first responders in a crisis situation? Did anyone in this social media foray bother to call 911?"
- Glenn Batuyong
"Congrats to Twitter! Let's hope that somehow this deal will improve Twitter's general reliability (HINT) but does this mean that fake garbage like "RIP Kanye West" will be top SERPs on Google?"
- Glenn Batuyong
"I'm not saying this reduces SERP. But I do get on the other end of the client's wrath telling him that removing those IDs is not possible (without compromising the integrity of the core). We usually stay away from Joomla SEF extensions because we do not want to deploy anything that may end up rolled into the core at a later stage or may mess up another aspect of the CMS functionality. In terms of SEO, whether or not one is more effective than the other in search results is debatable. I'm speaking from the standpoint of an admin and designer who has to crank out sites and justify the end-product's functionality. So consider this just a measure of the CMS's intuitiveness on specific operations"
- Glenn Batuyong
"examples i've seen with out-of-the-box joomla with all SEF functions enabled (J1.5 with .htaccess set) -- http://XXXX/compone...... -- http://XXXX/compone...... -- http://XXXX/communi...... -- http://XXXX/organiz...... Even if this is a misconfiguration, ever notice the Permalink Structure panel in WordPress? Note that you can swap category with article or add an article ID or switch to date or flip the year with a month or vice versa by just altering one string (with live preview). Maybe you'd like to use a custom tag or category base and include the day of the post. You can do that also. SEF options in Joomla are 3 radio buttons that basically turn it on. Any customization would require a third-party extension. I apologize if the first point is inaccurate but we've been deploying Joomla sites for a couple of years in a production and dev environment since 1.5 beta, and the itemIDs are..."

"seriously. just compare the SEO features/flexibility of wordpress vs joomla. it's like a futuristic starship vs. a cobbled hodgepodge of plane parts assembled by frustrated engineers. sorry to say but it embarrasses me whenever i explain joomla URLs can't mask ID numbers out-of-the-box (and we're nearing 2010) and cannot be easily restructured/reordered without a major 3rd-party plugin intervening."
- Glenn Batuyong
Am I *that* transparent? :P :) That is a really cool image. I'll give it away... Micah guessed right. I had to use a new technique (new to the sketchbooks, anyway) to capture this image...
- Kamilah Gill
How about a CC (or other copyleft) license so we can use and cite this in presentations?

I guess we now know where some of the Matrix style came from in real life, eh? @Curtiss: That old handle of yours sounds so cyberpunk that I'll probably have to use it as the title of a cyberpunk novel... ;)
- Dennis Jernberg
for me at first glace it looked like the MCP from maybe Tron 2
- Shawn McCollum
It looks like the birthplace of Skynet.
- TrafficBug
@Dennis - In case you weren't aware, the handle Crash Override is from the movie Hackers with Jonny Lee Miller, Matthew Lillard and Angelina Jolie (with Fisher Stevens as the evil corporate hacker and Penn Jillette in a small role as his assistant). Although much of it was ridiculous from a technology perspective, it was still a really fun movie with a fantastic soundtrack (the soundtrack itself actually has two sequels).
- Curtiss Grymala
@Curtiss Grymala - Hackers! great movie! the "Rainbow Books" HA!

MAC QUESTION: If I'm creating screencasts that include Firefox or Safari but I want the browser to be free of all bookmarks, plugins, extensions etc... is there a way to toggle to a "fresh install version" of the browser under the same user account? I know I could create a new user to do this but I want to stay under same user account. Possible?
i know you can create a fresh, separate profile for firefox... safari you can just hide the unnecessary toolbars (tabs, status, bookmarks, toolbar)
- Glenn Batuyong
from twhirl
Glenn - thanks for info on Firefox. I figured I could do that option with Safari.
- Mike Bracco
Micah - wow! How did I not know about Fluid. Looks really cool! Going to download now. Thanks!
- Mike Bracco
Have you tried using 'start private mode' browsing in firefox? Then the browser doesnt show your bookmarks and history in the location bar.

"I just want to make sure that migrating to the new version will not blow away any DOCman modules and links that are currently active on our sites (it happened once). Once you are completed with 1.5 we would really appreciate a clear HOWTO on upgrading the component/modules safely. Thanks!"

"youtube cross-posting with analytics is _almost_ cool except (unless i'm doing it wrong) 720p HD videos uploading to blip.tv don't end up @ youtube in 720p. They become letterboxed 4:3 SD videos. If you guys fix this, the Pro price would be so worth it!"

Dear Apple, if I get Google Voice Grand Central it's because I happily choose to be confused so give me that right and get the hell out of the way. Why don't you go do somethig useful like comply with the law and add voice dialing to ALL your phones?
- Glenn Batuyong
"One of the best features of retweeting the current way is the freedom add your own take or analysis on a tweet. In fact, many social media heavyweights and power twitterers agree that straight-up retweeting without adding anything personal from your own perspective doesn't give much value. The new method is just a stripped-down "pass-it-on" of news. Twitter: Give this more thought!"
