Undid previous failed AT&T Net Client update. Used Vista system restore. Sort of worked. After complete reboot, it worked perfectly. Nice.

Desktop computer is back up and running. iTunes was the biggest time soak of reinstalls. It's basically the dumbest program I have to use.
