Fewer. If you were asking me about a quantity - how much - like sugar or flour, I might have more or less. But you asked about a number - how many - so I have fewer subscribers. - Mary Baum

A noble effort, Rishabh, but I guess people think subscribers are like sugar or beer after all: we can have more or less beer and sugar, but not more or fewer subscribers. I guess you were right the first time, and everyone has either more or less subscribers. I still have fewer subscribers, and I'm going to shut up about this now - or I bet I'll have fewer still. ;-) - Mary Baum

Well, I want to see if 506 subscribers is a lot of subscribers, or not a lot of subscribers. So I decided to ask the community. While writing an application to record how many subscribers each FriendFeed user has would be more efficient, I think that this approach is more fun and does not constrain my free time as much as an application would. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)

I grew up with typewriters (and was hit by lighting while typing on one in my parent's basement). When I started college in 1982, there was only one computer among 40 students in my dorm. By my senior year 1985-86, there were 0.75-1.00 computers/student (helped by the Lisa/Mac release in 1984). Early 80s - maybe 1982 or 83-ish? We actually had our first office PC hooked up to a typewriter as the printer because the typewriter type looked better than the dot-matrix type. Naturally, once I met the Mac in 1987, I never went back. - Mary Baum

We were taught to use a typewriter at school - that was actually the only time we ever used a typewriter, for most of us, since computers were already taking over (except perhaps for form filling). We had the typewriter class and a computer class the same year, and the typewriter class did not even help for computer typing because it was on the horrible french key-layout whereas our computers had swiss keyboards - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)

I've used 'em, even had a junior high typing class which I did horribly at, but surprisingly learned rudimentary skills. When searching Craigslist, there is a search box and then a drop down to choose to search within "for sale", "community", "events", etc. Is there a trick to search in ALL of those forums at once? Or do I really have to do the same search 9 times to hit all sections?
I've had the exact same question (haven't figured out if there's a way to do it). - Jan (wordsforliving)
Bump. Any ideas? - Rochelle
I just use the search function on the main page, seattle.craigslist.org for the region, usually I find everything I am looking for. Hope that helps. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Ditto what Dan said. Just use the search on the main page and it should cover all sections. - JA Castillo (جاسون)
Perhaps I'm an idiot. What do you mean "search function on the main page"? I went to craigslist.com but don't see a search. - Rochelle
Bump for help? - Rochelle
Not sure what they mean, but you could also try using a google trick, like your search term(s) plus site:seattle.craigslist.com - Josh Haley
The main page of the location you are interested in (e.g. Seattle). There should be a search box on the left. Any search I have done under "sale" usually returns listings in multiple sections. - JA Castillo (جاسون)

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, review - Telegraph - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture...
harryPotterStars_1438406f[1].jpg
"Settling down to watch each new Harry Potter movie is a bit like slipping into a much-loved old coat you’ve found at the back of the wardrobe. You know broadly what to expect; the pleasure is in the rediscovery. But it is to the enormous credit of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth instalment in the sequence, that it doesn’t rest too comfortably in this familiarity. It takes the saga in a dark direction, as Harry accepts his role as the Chosen One and sets about preparing to destroy the evil Lord Voldemort. Director David Yates and his cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel set the tone right at the start, with a brilliant opening scene that shows evil sweeping into the normal world in explosive black trails of smoke, creating dark storms over London and destroying the Millennium Bridge. That monochrome intensity, a sense of all the colour having seeped out of the world as wickedness takes hold, is the dominant mood as the Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) seeks to help Harry understand the history and the mind of his arch-enemy." - RAPatton
"New characters are effortlessly absorbed into this Rolls Royce of an ensemble: Helen McCrory is both sinister and febrile in a tiny scene as Malfoy’s distraught mother; Jim Broadbent is a joy as the social-climbing Horace Slughorn, who makes his first appearance disguised as an armchair. Should People Kill Their Blogs in Favor of Lifestreaming? - http://lifestreamblog.com/should-...
They both consist of a series of online written webpage messages, often including comments, an RSS feed, trackbacks, and categorization. If a lifestream includes all the features of a blog, how is it not a blog? Blogging is dead, long live blogging. - Mike Chelen
No. Do both. Lifestreaming is not an excuse to be lazy ;-) - Andy Sternberg from fftogo
Without blogs, lifestreaming would be rather dull. - April Russo
Feed your blog to your lifestream. - Morton Fox
Or feed your lifestream to your blog. - Jason Clarke from iPhone
Is there a contest somewhere to see who can ask the silliest social media questions? A blog and a lifestream are two different tools. They can interact with each other, but not really replace each other. - David Chartier from BuddyFeed
it depends on what their blogs are. Blogs are the place to write longer form pieces that simply don't work well in most lifestreaming apps - and I really like longer form pieces. The bitesize chunks in lifestreaming tend to accentuate the superficial too easily. - felix
Until Tumblr came along, there was no distinction about what a blog should be versus a lifestream. Just because a traditonal blog platform isn't necessarily optimized for it doesn't mean a blog on Blogger or WordPress couldn't be used as a lifestream. Really it comes down to what the content is that is being lifestreamed. So if you want to separate them, fine. And if your lifestream is... more... - Jason Clarke from email
I think most people should. Me for instance, cannot keep my blog updated with any regularity. I guess, in the end that means that blogging (or writing long-form text) was just not my thing. So you are right, that for normal people, who are more "consumers" than "producers", should definitely kill their blogs (I don't know about life-streaming, though) :) - Shivanand Velmurugan
Isn't blogging part of one's lifestream? Lifestream is a sum of your activities. Blogging is one of your activities. - Matt Soreco
I now use my blog to publish new content, lifestreaming for links and personal updates. Makes my life easier. - Tommy Keene
Do both. I agree with feeding your blog (referring to a blog that is about a specific area of expertise) to your lifestream and letting your audience choose which one they would like to follow. It depends if your audience is interested in only your specialized content and not necessary curious about your personal life or opinion on other topics. - Mike Smith
I can't. I have way too much to talk about! :) - SoMuchMoreThanAMom
I hope not - life streams don't have the depth of content that blogs do. It'd be a sad day for the internet if life streams replaced blogs. - Stuart Forsyth
I think it's a sad state of affairs when people want to talk about whether or not they should "life stream." How about just living your life and getting over yourself? - Dawn
Dawn, Lifestreaming isn't always about being a narcissist although many use it that way. It's also about the power of curating the vast content of the web to share with others. And for the record for those that may not have read my post. I disagree with killing your blog. - Mark Krynsky
Mark, ignore that. REALLY. - Kamilah Gill
I only lifestream (through FF). My Friendfeed is also used as the closest thing I have to a regularly updated blog. It's a combo of both, but more lifestream. I want to republish it in paper form. I recently stopped keeping up the paper journals I had written daily for about 15 years in favor of recording everything electronically. Lifestreams probably won't kill blogs. Other stuff will. - Kamilah Gill
I'm one that finds it simpler and less engaging to use a lifestream versus a blog. However, I guess it would also depend on how much content someone actually needs to write. For short submissions lifestreams are great, but I can't imagine trying to frequently read 500+ word posts on FriendFeed. - Xavion Saltair
Xavion, what makes reading a long post in Friendfeed more difficult than on any other platform? - Mike Chelen
No. Some folks like "broadcasting". Others like "publishing". Others like streaming. All converge here. And use varies according to purpose. - andy
Mark Trapp
If one doubted @arrington in his assessment of FriendFeed as an online mob, one need only look at how the FriendFeed community handled this: http://friendfeed.com/search...
So the person was rude and uncivil in her reaction to her work being distributed. It doesn't justify the relentless perpetuation of the issue for the sake of I don't even know what: enjoyment? Spite? Schadenfreude? Her comments indicate a lack of judgement: the continued response to what she wrote indicates a collective lack of judgement from a section of the FriendFeed community as a whole. Stop it. This isn't the FriendFeed I fell in love with. - Mark Trapp
I completely missed that yesterday, even though I saw the image over and over again - RAPatton from iPhone
The only problem with your assumption that this type of behavior only occurs on FriendFeed. If that person walked into a party I was at and spoke to Kol in that manner, I would react the same way. Being inflammatory to such an extreme will normally cause such a reaction to come back at you. This applies in real life, of which FriendFeed is just a reflection. - Johnny Worthington
THAT's why that image was on the top of my home feed all day. Was wondering if hide was working or not - /Users/genieyclo
If we were all at a party and she came in and started yelling and screaming at us to stop talking about her car because we think it's cool, you are joking if you don't think that you'd see the same backlash. Some people are taking it too far, yes, but she was outright wrong to act the way she acted. Kindness goes a long way, ya know? - Mike VanLare (slayerboy)
Also too, a lot of people telling you that you are wrong on the facts you present isn't a mob... it usually means you're just wrong... - Johnny Worthington
I'm curious Mark, what would have been the right approach in your opinion? - Bwana
Mark, please don't try to defend that idiot. There was a range of responses, just like in the real world and, in my opinion, better responses than the average that you would find on most of the internet. Some people got nasty back at her, some people chose to repost that [tacky] image perhaps out of spite or as a protest of freedom, or to show the dummy that it's not possible to just... more... - Kamilah Gill
Others took something more like your approach. They tried to be helpful, civil, maybe even took her side to some extent. Even Kol himself was far more civil toward her than she deserved. So no, I can't see that we're any sort of mob for this. Anyone who thinks so is over-sensitive and willfully ignoring the larger picture. I do see that you said "a section of the FriendFeed community". I don't even think you can necessarily group them all together. They all probably had different reasons to repost. - Kamilah Gill
And okay, now a meme has been spawned because of this. It's not just FF's fault. We're free individuals. You and I won't participate (though I think it's slightly humorous. It's also belaboring the point and dragging it beyond its level of importance, but I think your post may have spurred on this extended reaction). It would be one thing if she asked nicely and we still reacted in nasty ways. *That's* a mob. She didn't ask nicely. - Kamilah Gill
I agree that some of the people reposting the picture and attacking are being petty and childish (and - don't tell - i unsubbed from those. Don't have time for 8 year old "grownups") - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Joelle, they'll probably see you saying that you unsubscribed here. I really think that's an overreaction. We're under no obligation to protect the sensitive feelings of some stranger online. This is how the internet works. Had she asked nicely, it would have been a different story, and then Kol and all the others *might* have been at fault. Please don't unsub from me over this. I never reposted or even liked that image, I just don't really agree with you. - Kamilah Gill
But it was interesting to see how the FF group here attempted (and succeeded in some ways) to set up a social norm, Kol for what ever he did helped establish a social norm by holding out for an apology before take down. That is what makes it interesting, while the next person who comes though claiming that someone stole their work, that social norm (be nice, apologize if being rude,... more... - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Some of the negociation was indeed a good example, but people posting caricatures and post-a-caption and reusing the image willy nilly dont have any excuse. That's not an impressive thing from a crowd dynamics point of view, it's a child-mob-bullying behaviour. - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
@Joelle - agree on the mobbing viewpoint - but... (of course right?) when Kol set out to get an apology before take down - he was defining a behavior that he found acceptable. People were either for or against that stand. Bad language, and the rate that the thread grew was going to attract trolls along the way who were equally as unrestrained with their language as V from DA. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Very true - Kol did nothing wrong in posting the image (except perhaps not entering license and copyright info when submitting to visualise.us) and after he was insulted I totally understand his stance "of course I will respect your wishes as a copyright owner once you respect me and speak civilly" - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I think Dan is making a very good point here. Shouting like the girl was doing is asking for certain reactions, but it appeared that everybody was behaving quite decent (to my humble opinion) and tried to explain her how the internet is working. I'd say the conversation about it could have stopped earlier, but yeah, not everybody is online at the same moment and everyone wants his thing... more... - Ton Zijp
I definitely think there is a marked difference between Kol's initial reaction to the takedown and the resulting flamewar + "meme" that occurred afterwards. After a few people chimed in to defend Kol, it stopped being a normal response to an angry person online and the mob mentality took over. Heck, when I disagreed with the licensing line that someone kept copying and pasting over and... more... - Mark Trapp
Rightly or wrongly I thought to take some positives out of all this, so I tried to explain the situation to the user, I wanted an apology for the completely unjust abusive comments and now I'm just awaiting a response from FF regarding whether they can remove the image but keep the rest of the entry intact for reference. I respect the user's request to remove it from FF and... more... - Kol Tregaskes
The appropriate response, I think, was what Kol initially did: try to talk calmly to a person. It's understandable that, in a public space, everyone's got to chime in with their two cents (I know I did). But the perpetuation of the issue with the level of pure contempt and glee people had with the resulting meme was insane. If you want a real-life example: that's the difference between throwing an asshole out of a bar and forming a mob to storm the castle. - Mark Trapp
Kol: there's a difference between trying to argue for fair use/licensing rights or trying to get an apology for an offense and what happened afterwards. When she didn't conform to the expected behavior, mob justice took over and completely disregarded any form of civility: people seemed to be out to make sure she's set up as an example. That's not normal: that's something 4chan does.... more... - Mark Trapp
I don't really see a castle that's being stormed. I see it as having Kol's back. When someone comes in here attacking him like that when he's polite, well, I'm going to go with Kol. Especially when the license is creative commons and there is no reason to be angry about a thumbnail being shared. This was saying "back off, you're wrong", not attacking an English castle and burning it to the ground. - Jordan Hofker
Agree Mark, I didn't like the gang-up that happened afterwards either. 4chan? - Kol Tregaskes
She has a right to *ask* for her photo to be removed, that's fine in any circumstance but I personally don't believe she has the right to abuse me or anyone else to such a level (and vice versa). Maybe I'm wrong but that's that way I've been brought up - to be kind and helpful to all and to except it in return. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, I don't think anyone is asserting her right to be offensive: she clearly doesn't have that right. But regardless of what she did, the ensuing response was way beyond an appropriate one. Just because one person acted wrongly doesn't give free license for everyone else to do the same. Two wrongs don't make a right, even on the internet. - Mark Trapp
Exactly, Mark. It works both ways. - Kol Tregaskes
FF has not been, and never will be, another 4chan, unless you subscribe to and pay attention to 4chan-ish individuals. You can't block and hide and mold your viewing experience in 4chan, can you? Or am I wrong? I don't agree with this attempting to make rules for everyone. Express your opinion, fine. Some people will listen, many won't. Just don't expect us all to act the same way. That's reality. That's life. - Kamilah Gill
I think when you have any group or community attacked by an outsider you will get some degree of closing ranks. The downside is, I agree, the appearance of some unsavoury behaviour but most of the responses were not that unsavoury and just showed the existence of a community made by many different individuals who react in different ways. If Kol had received no support at all it would have been more worrying. Also the issue of sharing is much of what FF is all about so it touched a nerve with many people. - M F
The one thing that (perhaps) no-one noticed is that English is not Verothika first language and this fact gets overlooked almost always. Especially here in the US everyone assumes that everyone has a perfect grasp of the English language. And I have worked for a client in Poland (and other places in Central Europe) and when things are difficult to understand the way they express... more... - Rene Wirtz
I noticed that to Rene; she is a 20 year old Polish girl who may not haves good grasp of english - RAPatton from iPhone
Her grasp was good enough to use unsavory words towards Kol and Kol's mom, just sayin'. - Jordan Hofker
RAPatton, Rene, I think "are you fucvking retarded? remove it now! Its for Deviantart.com members ONLY you asshole!!!!" - not much dependent on good grasp of English. I completely disagree with people who then responded in kind by calling her a "dumb cunt" and the like but she was not exactly being subtle here. - Kamath (नमः)
Jordan - that is incorrect. If you look at film and TV programs, especially action/police/thriller/grown up series - which is where she is likely to have gotten her vocabulary, you will notice that the language is one normal english speakers do not use in normal conversation - but how are foreigners to know that these films use slang and strong language as a way to "tag" their... more... - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I'm liking this post for the great discussion going on. I saw the 'meme' on Sunday and traced it back to Kol's first post. It was crazy there for a while but I only hope that 1) Velonka learned more abt how the web works and 2) Kol doesn't have to take his post down. At the core, Kol did nothing wrong. - Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕ from BuddyFeed
You are dead on with your original post and first comment Mark. (haven't read this whole thread yet) - Lindsey is Fierce!
Joelle, I read what she wrote, and her grasp was certainly good enough to use those words. I looked at the TV shows she lists as enjoying and they don't use that kind of language in nearly all of them. I think we'd be wrong to automatically assume that she doesn't have a "good enough" grasp of English, especially considering she (apparently) hasn't only lived in Poland. - Jordan Hofker
@Joelle: you are correct. And in any case, what words do you usually learn first in another language?! It is always the swear words. - Rene Wirtz
@Jordan: with jumping to conclusions, I'd venture a guess that she works in the hotel industry in Ireland. The hotels in the UK and Ireland are effectively run by Polish and Russian immigrants, so you can see how she could get away with living in another country by only speaking the bare minimum amount of English. - Rene Wirtz
Stop this, you're going to give Arrington more "death threats." - Clark the Kittensquisher from iPhone
@Jordan: and here's another thing you may or may not know. TV series in the US are censored for language; those same shows in the rest of the world, or at least in Europe, are not censored for language. - Rene Wirtz
Mobs can be formed anywhere. Bigger mobs can be found at reddit and digg than FriendFeed. I've seen mobs on Flickr, slashdot, boingboing, blogs, etc. Online mobs exist anywhere large groups of people communicate. The targeting of FF specifically as somehow unique to mob mentality is an overreaction. In this case, the artist was rude first and so people responded. Personally I'd think she should have tried to be nicer when objecting to the use of her image. Missed most of this yesterday. - Thomas Hawk
Yes, she certainly could have tried being nice :D - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Thomas Hawk: +1 - Edward Coffey
One day people are going to understand that when you give nasty, you can receive a much bigger nasty. The girl was rude. I do not even excuse English as a second language; I have studied other languages and learned profanity in those languages without using it on someone I don't know. This always pointing fingers at FriendFeed as a mob site is really getting old and not any more intelligent. - MiniMage (FakeLifePerson)
Justice based on "eye for an eye" has been rejected by nearly all civilizations for a couple thousand years because it doesn't work: it merely escalates problems. That is, if you get me, I'm going to get you back harder to make you learn, and then in turn you retaliate towards me for harming you. To quote Ghandi, "an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind." Functioning societies... more... - Mark Trapp
Totally missed this, except for Mark's post here. And the original thread is gone. Must have been quite a slam fest. - Hutch Carpenter
Hutch: It actually wasn't a slam fest, just an opportunity for people to pretend it was. http://friendfeed.com/rickcog... - MiniMage (FakeLifePerson)
I think Mark's final point above is key: Friendfeed has an opportunity to rise above this kind of behavior. While Thomas is correct, and a mob can form anywhere online, we should know better around here. I believe folks should think twice about what Mark is saying and consider taking it to heart. - Jason Wehmhoener
I'm still missing the part where this vast mob amassed, descended upon her and tore her to shreds. - MiniMage (FakeLifePerson)
Hutch, I actually pulled up the thread shortly before it got deleted. I didn't cringe much, but mostly because I see the sort of pile-on there on a regular basis and I guess I'm numb to it. The girl reacted very badly and irrationally, and a couple hundred comments called her out for that. I'll probably save this and post it to my blog if I get the gumption to actually write this up. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Alright, so here's my question: every time someone gets corrected by a lot of people, is that supposed to be considered a mobbing? I was under the impression that a lot of people had to be nasty for there to be a real mob. They let her know that her actions were ridiculous, sure, and some people were as mean as she was, but I am not one to call a hundred dissenting voices a mob (I think Arrington is, though). - MiniMage (FakeLifePerson)
The difference is, she was way out of line. She was a month late. Acted like a twelve year old. Wrote like a six year old. She was even wrong, the license said it was shareable. He liked it on Deviant Art itself, so it was "intended for Deviant art users." He wasn't profiting from the photo either. This woman was obviously stupid, and deserved whatever she had coming to her. This is the Internet for Christ's sake,... not a mob. - Clark the Kittensquisher
Agree about the eye for an eye quote, Mark. It's not needed. I was thrown some pretty nasty abuse from this user right from the straight but never retaliated. Of course others did. The support was most welcome and I thank everyone for that but, to me, revenge is weak and shouldn't be accepted... anywhere. Everyone is feel to express their opinions but its the way you express them that's important. Sure, we should have told the user the problem but it didn't need the foul language. - Kol Tregaskes
Anyway, my entry is now deleted (though would have like to have kept the comments) and my bookmark has been removed from vis. so case closed for me. Hope everyone else can please join me? :-) - Kol Tregaskes

From the page: "Here's how it started. On June 2, 2009, Hal Turner, a radio talk show host considered by civil rights organizations to be a white supremacist, wrote on his blog that three named Federal Appeals Court judges, who upheld a handgun ban, deserved to die. The addresses, phone numbers, and work place locations were given to the reader. "These judges deserve to die. . . ." "Observe the Constitution or die," he wrote. He never said he would kill the judges and never attempted to. When arrested, he had a shotgun, 3 handguns and 150 hollow point bullets. He claimed to have a permit for the guns, but the bullets are illegal. He was brought to court in an orange jumpsuit, handcuffs and shackles. Bail was set at $200,000 -- he is in a Newark jail." - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag

Revolutionary Espresso Book Machine launches in London | http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/apr/24/espresso-book-machine-launches/print
"It's not elegant and it's not sexy – it looks like a large photocopier – but the Espresso Book Machine is being billed as the biggest change for the literary world since Gutenberg invented the printing press more than 500 years ago and made the mass production of books possible. Launching today at Blackwell's Charing Cross Road branch in London, the machine prints and binds books on demand in five minutes, while customers wait. Signalling the end, says Blackwell, to the frustration of being told by a bookseller that a title is out of print, or not in stock, the Espresso offers access to almost half a million books, from a facsimile of Lewis Carroll's original manuscript for Alice in Wonderland to Mrs Beeton's Book of Needlework. [...]" - ianf ⌘ from Bookmarklet
Right now these machines cost a bundle, but, with economies of scale, can "One Hour Bookstores" be far behind? Goodbye print-on-demand, welcome print-on-a-whimsy cottage industry! - ianf ⌘
The great question is why order from Amazon, when you could pop in and have it made up for you, whilst you wait. - David Bausola
Perhaps. It rather depends on the range (breadth) of genres and back-order titles in each venue. Traditional publishing is in many senses a license to print money, and so the industry isn't too keen on giving it up. If "Expressoed" copies turn out to be as costly as traditional ones, prospective buyers may opt for better "offline" quality from the big A. Then again, they may not... book... more... - ianf ⌘
Amazon has been using print-on-demand at their processing centers for a while to handle low-volume titles, the logical next step is for it to move out even closer to the end users. Its very similar to the fax machine actually: initially FedEx installed fax machines at their local offices and offered fax as a premium service, sending the fax across the country to the nearest FedEx office... more... - DGentry
Denton, indeed. Thus on-demand is not a product; imagine the use case: I'm about to take a journey. book a flight, it's long haul, so I order a book (profile & recommendations); the book stand at the airport prints it up for me ready for collection on the way through to departure lounge (or collect at departure as business service). - David Bausola
moo cards are another example. - David Bausola
Yes, Denton, but there always will be that £175.000 threshold such a machine costs, which will limit frequency of their occurrence. Amazon may yet end up the winner, because of the economies of scale in distrubution, esp. if/ when beleaguered traditionals elect to lower their prices to stay afloat. It's tricky business really. - ianf ⌘
Think of the remix capabilities too. Selection of chapters from different books. Pick and Mix editorial in a book format, lovely. Just in time + bespoke = everyone's happy. - David Bausola
You can dream, David, but this won't be happening for a long time yet. Simple reason, copyrights. As with daily newspapers where you have to buy it all, but nobody expects you to read it cover to cover, so books are largely made up of parts you will read, those that you might, and those you'll perhaps browse through (all too often, I am afraid). Publishers will not permit selling of just some topical chapters of interest to you, you'll have to buy all the "superfluous" ones as well. Alas. - ianf ⌘
Think of it as Tivo for Books. - David Bausola
Bad analogy, also American-parochial one I'm afraid. You do not "subscribe" to chapters of books floating by, you buy a book whether you only intend to read the tasty bits on pages 92-101. - ianf ⌘
I've been playing around with FriendFeed and this http://www.tabbloid.com/, to get nice productions as PDFs. The source of 'content' will depend on the open licence of creative commons BY-SA, and artists are getting to understand that. Stephen Fry on Twitter for example. - David Bausola
Consumption/use habits are based upon what the technology of the time allows/affords. DRM tried to play havoc with the watching experience. - David Bausola
Good concept but, unless you can freely mix-and-match, and you'll never be able to provide just that to general public, a niche product. Even if well executed one, as this seems to me. That said, I dislike PDFs just for the reason that they make potentially dynamic information static, and kowtow to absolute page extent aesthetics even on a screen. - ianf ⌘
kowtow = good word ;-) - David Bausola
Here's an example of what I'm thinking about, or as from the comments "The internet made better by the paper, and now the paper made better by the internet." http://noisydecentgraphics.typepad.com/design... - David Bausola
I've read about these "Things Our Friends Have Written On The Internet 2008" which is a niche product with an enormous production cost-to-distribution ratio. Author never says what they charged for the 1000 numbered copies, but I bet it was a bundle, £39.95? Only when there are fully automated tools to do that (perhaps a suitable application for Wolfram/Alpha?) could this become of use for the public @large... - ianf ⌘
They never charged for the paper - it was an experiment / proof of concept - I've got a copy - it's lovely. Yes, nice inclusion for Alpha. - David Bausola

What would make this a real bonus is when they can come out with the color edition. Ok, so I am thinking comic books here, but what an awesome way for a small comic artist to do on demand comics. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Dan, all dandy, except it won't be happening, not in this iteration of EBM. It's strictly publisher-controlled selective-backlist only, no option to come in from the street with print-ready manuscript in hand and do a small print run. Or, should that eventually be on offer, it will be prohibitively expensive. - ianf ⌘
Hold on, I need to amend the above. In the video at around 50 secs mark, it is claimed that the client CAN upload own file, either electronically or from a CD. It's not a light read though, so, before I embark on it later in the week (alas), could you please express it in High-Concept terms, e.g. what [physical size/ quality] "newspapers" you have in mind; and what this your "service to help people make their own newspapers" will be servicing: a single-point electronic drop-off box perhaps for client material - out comes a pack of 20-or-so 16-page tabloid papers prewrapped for dropping off a van at a stand? - ianf ⌘
Hey Ian, It's not my project, I just know the guys behind it. (Sorry for the confusion - I mentioned it above as an example of what I was talking about - the process is dissimilar from Purefold). No idea how it's going to roll out - but it's a fine experiment to follow via their blog. - David Bausola

"The creator of a bestselling comic designed to show the world the tolerant and peaceful face of Islam has written an open letter to his young sons explaining how the project grew out of 9/11. In the letter, written for the BBC News website, Kuwaiti psychologist Dr Naif al Mutawa, says his superheroes - inspired by the Koran and known as THE 99 - were designed to "take back Islam" from militants who had taken it hostage. The comics, which now sell about one million copies a month in several languages, are soon to be made into an animated film by Dutch media company Endemol. Early last year, Forbes magazine announced THE 99 were one of the 20 top pop culture trends sweeping the world." - RAPatton from Bookmarklet
What's funny to me reading this, is that my sis and I just finished writing our Chuck spec, which involves an Iraqi comic book writer. I had no knowledge of this when we wrote the idea...last year. - Shawna Benson

Everyone is giving me heck in London about how I'm a FriendFeed cheerleader. Truth is, I don't understand FriendFeed either. Talk to me:
LOL! A FriendFeed Cheerleader! - Matt
I don't understand it either - Doubledown_inSL
If you don't understand FriendFeed then I must be really lost - Susan Beebe

Robert- what don't you understand? - Brett Kelly
Gimme an F! Gimme an R!.... - Jeremy Brooks
friendfeed will make sense a year from now - Doubledown_inSL
Robert - listen to your gut. :) - Matt
Robert wants to know how to gain 100,000 followers in 3 minutes - Doubledown_inSL
Well that is a bit of a problem, it has a steep learning curve! - TobiasVerhoog.com
Brett: I don't understand how FriendFeed will beat Facebook. ;-) - Robert Scoble
friendfeed's learning curve looks like heaving boobies - Doubledown_inSL
LOL, nice. Easy to beat Facebook. Friendfeed is way safer, and can connect to other services. - Zachary TG
Brett: and I don't understand why being a cheerleader for something is bad, especially when I'm right. - Robert Scoble
And when you shake the iPhone app, it updates! (wait... no... that's not FriendFeed....) - Linda Mills
FriendFeed is like the new geocities - Doubledown_inSL

Oracio: I'd say something sexist right now, but even though I've had too many glasses of wine I won't. - Robert Scoble
Surely cheerleaders don't really understand what they're drawing people's attention to anyway ;-) - Katie Dob from iPod
The only reason I really have a FriendFeed account is to talk to you. Facebook has commoditized just about all the other 'niche social services' into a familiar interface for the masses. So as far as 'friend feeding' is concerned, there's really only one site shaping up to matter the most — and that's Facebook. For that reason, I don't see FriendFeed reaching past the early adopter crowd anytime soon. - Colin Anawaty
I've been trying to figure it out. As a result liking it more. That's normal. - Bob Morse
Robert lets go home , dont drink so much there :-))) - Johni Fisher
Robert: Don't let me stop you. Ha. - Oracio

What matters is that I don't have access to your secret room, Robert. I hate it. :) - Jorge Escobar
I want access, he won't let me. LOL - Zachary TG
Bob: hopefully this isn't the end. But if it was the end I wouldn't be posting. My wife would be and it wouldn't be happy. - Robert Scoble
Robert - have Paul ask a question on the site through you and compare it to what he might see if he poses the same question through you on Twitter and Facebook. That might convince him. - Martha
Jorge: have I met you face-to-face? Only people I've met face-to-face get access to @secretscoble. - Robert Scoble
Martha: that's an unfair fight. - Robert Scoble
I know the rules, Robert. Doesn't mean I don't hate it. - Jorge Escobar

Zach: Plenty wrong with London, Ontario Canada. Its exactly too far from Toronto, Niagara, Windsor and anywhere else you would want to go to do something on a Friday night and get home at a decent hour :) - Luke Kilpatrick

+1 Ian. The signal-to-noise ratio is much easier to handle on FF than on other sites. (Yes, @Twitter, we're talking about _you_. Again.) - Bill Sodeman
Bill, yes, for sure! - Myrna
Robert, @secretscoble? Why not just DM. Hey are you going to sleep tonight? - Myrna
Everyday, I discover the power and flexibility of Friendfeed. - ashish damania
Myrna: yes I'm going to sleep now. Enough craziness for one evening. - Robert Scoble
I wouldn't say you were a cheerleader, more a bell ringer for the service - Joe Dawson
Growing up on IRC and AIM, somehow Twitter seemed natural and familiar, while Friendfeed has taken me outside of my comfort zone. Which is exciting! - Mike Chelen
It's kinda weird. So what is Friendfeed about? It seems to me that everyone just subcribes and never does anything else. - Chip
Robert, you're *always* a cheerleader for something. When I first started reading you, it was TabletPC (happy days!). And there's nothing wrong with that - you're a natural enthusiast. The only time it ever gets to be a problem is when you forget that whatever you're being enthusiastic about isn't the right way for everyone. - Ian Betteridge
You are doing with FriendFeed what you do with anything you love, talk about it all the time, get people engaged, then stand back and let them figure out how to use it for themselves. Whats to understand? ^_^ - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Great. Now I've got a mental image of Scoble in a short skirt and pedal pushers, carrying pom-pons. (You don't really have the legs for this look, by the way.) - John Craft
John, that's an image I really didn't want at lunch time :) - Ian Betteridge
Oh, those whingeing Poms in ol' Mother England...ignore them and keep on cheerleading. - George Hall (Australia)
How do I block all of John Craft's thoughts from making visuals in my head? :-) - James

[SteroidFeed]: Here is my new way of watching feeds on FriendFeed. I call it SteroidFeed but it is also a "Multi-Talk" style interface ... the file sits locally and allows me to view multiple topics. I've attached a copy of the simple html. Feel free to modify the html but please leave attribution and share your changes. Leave a URL if on Internet.
SteroidFeed.PNG
Of course, the version I uploaded does not include my own entries but instead has the iPhone entry as an example. My local copy uses "from:lph" so I can see my entries and add comments quickly. (e.g., this comment is added through steroidfeed.html and not through the site. - LPH™ and his dog P™

I have made a meme of friendfeed embeds here: http://ff.clipotech.com/ - Svartling
Svartling - yes - your setup is nice. I've gone back and forth between 3 and 4 columns. My desktop setup can handle 4 but the notebook (1024x768) can only handle 3. Therefore, http://www.steroidfeed.com is only sitting at 3 right now. I'm also missing the instructions on how to make changes for anyone not familiar with FF. - LPH™ and his dog P™
Yes I was thinking of make 3 columns but I decided to make it 4 because my web stats shows that most visitors have a resolution at 1024x768 or higher. Maybe I will change to 3 columns. Hmm.. - Svartling

Amazon.com gets slapped with $119 million tax bill in Japan - TechFlash: Seattle's Technology News Source
From the page: "Amazon.com has been engaged in a well-publicized battle with various states over sales tax issues. Now comes word that the online retail giant is facing a new tax headache in Japan. Japanese tax officials are serving up a $119 million tax bill to an Amazon company for unreported incomes over three years, according to published reports." - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag

"Or maybe you’re a Humming Bird Parent. Either way, if you are, you have the distinct ability to hover over your child (or children), overseeing every small developmental detail. Your particular area of expertise is educational opportunities.  Those skills emerge with special vigor during your offspring’s later high school years, when the college process looms large." - Shevonne from Bookmarklet
This is very interesting. The moms I meet here in LA (well, the Valley) are often hoverers and obsess over so much over the slightest thing. When a woman I met found out that Johnnie's birthday was a week away, she asked me what the theme for her party was. I laughed and said that, as the third, her parents said she was lucky to have a cake. The woman looked horrified. - Lis Miller
I used to be a "Helicopter Parent." I used to hover over everything that my children did. I read "Scream-Free Parenting," and I realized what I was doing. I now let them make mistakes and not try to be a perfect parent. - Shevonne
What is amusing to me is seeing helicopter parents when their kids are in college, sometimes parents just need to let go, and understand that Jonny or Jannie didn't get an A because they missed 40% of the class. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Liked for the image. - John
If you talk to someone older about how their kids grew up, you'll be amazed at the difference with what is expected today. Kids used to be left to their own devices a lot more, expected to entertain themselves, take care of themselves, expected to be solid and resilient - nowadays parents are expected to make every minute of their childs day an experience, get everything right and plan... more... - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
@Joelle +++++++ Exactly! I was being asked in February what I was going to do with the kids in the summer. Every parent who came up to me expected me to have every part of their summer scheduled. It was the same with extracurricular activities. I said I only had them in one, and you should have seen the stares I got. I'm glad that I got out of that way of thinking because it makes for spoiled children. - Shevonne
I'm not and I get dirty looks sometimes for not being one. I'm not about to get up and run over every time my kid falls. If my kid doesn't finish her schoolwork, that's on her to accept the consequences. I will guide her sure, but she needs to learn to be self-reliant. I can always tell people whose parents did everything for them or propped them up for doing something basic. - Anika Malone
I used to be when the boy was small but my best friend pulled me aside and had the Come to Baby Jeebus talk. Then she made me "pay" with valuables to fuss over him and that broke me of the last of the habit. He's happier for it. - Kisha from BuddyFeed
Shevonne - if a kid doesn't have some extracurricular here by the time their 6 months, they're definitely deprived;) - Lis Miller
No helicopter parenting here. I may stay close in a new situation where I know he's uneasy, or where I don't know/like/trust the other people who are around, but I'm more than happy to let him discover and explore for himself. Here at home, we have a basic routine to our day so far as meal & nap times go, but I don't schedule activities for him. He'll get that kind of structure one he starts school. I'd rather just let him be for now, if that makes sense. - Mellissa Doyle
@Lis One of the mothers and I were talking about that. When we were young, we were in activities depending on our parents' schedules. Now, our schedules revolve around our child's schedule. I fell for that at first, but took a step back and said "No way!" - Shevonne
I want my kids to have to deal with the consequences of their actions while the consequences are relatively mild. I want them to be sure of their abilities and limitations before they are out on their own. I read an interesting theory that overly protected children were more likely to take unnecessary risks in late adolescence or young adulthood, as they were unable to test the... more... - Heather Solos

Opinions wanted (because I'm too lazy to go do the comparison myself): what's your favorite site for maintaining your photos? Not necessarily looking for a professional solution because I'm just not that good, but would like something that has good embeddable widget. Anything other than the usual suspects?
I'll stick probably to Picasa in the future, because of integration on our phone :) Plus, I expect that Google will do a one-for-all storage for pics, mail, etc... and I'll have that for everything else. If you aren't afraid of the big G, I think their storage will be the way to go. - Tim Hoeck
problem with the Picasa is the piddly storage and the cost for extra is high compared to other choices. Myphotoalbum is 20 a year for unlimited storage. - Gunny The Fuzzball ™
have you thought of smugmug? - Ryan Gerritsen
I host most of my photos using Gallery and also use Picasa for a subset of photo albums from my Gallery collection. I also post a selection on Flickr. I have a number of friends that use smugmug and seem to like the service. - Imabug
Well, integration with the G1 isn't be a make-or-break for me since most of my G1 photos get mailed into FF and then deleted, so those photos would already appear on the site via a FF embed. This is mainly for photos from the DSLR. I've definitely thought about SmugMug but am leery of the pay-only option when so many others offer a paid upgrade (essentially, a try before you buy). - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Follow-up question: do any of the sites recommended (or not yet recommended) offer a mail-in option? I'd love to be able to email in a zip file and have it uploaded to the site for me (perhaps wishful thinking). - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I use smugmug and like it very much - J.D. Deutschendorf
myphotoalbum does via email or mms. - Gunny The Fuzzball ™
Is that for all options, Gunny, or only the paid option? - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Not sure /off to investigate - Gunny The Fuzzball ™
looks like the free account has the email upload option too. - Gunny The Fuzzball ™
Thanks for checking, Gunny =) - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
No one said Flickr? Are we avoiding the obvious for a reason? I love Flickr. As far as their service and their features, they're perfect. The only place to be leary of Flickr is in their policies, where they're deleting and destroying pictures and comments for people who violate TOS. But if you're sure your pictures will never approach that line, then Flickr is freakin sweet, and integrates with the G1 very well also. - Matthew DeVries
Posterous is completely free and lets you email images. - ...Vezquex
http://www.flickr.com/photos... And the geotagging integration with the G1 is sweet too. - Matthew DeVries
Nothing is completely free. They may not take your money, but they're making money off your pictures somehow. - Matthew DeVries
I like prefer Picasa because the software is freaking awesome.. it will auto-sync to your picasa account (if you prefer).. it also has upload via email (I don't think zip format .. unsure)... by the way, I am not "disagreeing" with Gunny... I haven't heard of myphotoalbum (maybe its a big site) .. but I prefer to stick with someone I know will be around for the long haul, especially for... more... - Tim Hoeck
I've used Flickr before and personally am not a fan: their uploader takes forever. And like I said, this isn't for photos from the G1 (those come to FF 99% of the time), but from the DSLR. Geotagging is of no interest to me. Vezquex, I've got a Posterous but I don't consider it an option because it's doesn't have album capability (nor does it offer a photograph widget that I am aware of). - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Flickr also accepts camcorder clips from our phone as well. - Matthew DeVries
I'm using Flickr. I was using Picasa, but when I finally had to get more space, they wanted like $80/year. Flickr only charges $24.95/year and this includes unlimited storage of photos and videos. - Shevonne
Smugmug - I am an absolute fanatic about smugmug. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
I'm giving a spin to ourdoings with my new G1, I like it organizes photos automatically by date http://ourdoings.com - Jorge Escobar
OurDoings has a slideshow widget. Scroll to the bottom of http://ourdoings.com/jungleg... for an example. It also accepts zip files by email. If you think you'll be doing most of your uploading by email, you can get started by sending an empty message to begin@ourdoings.com with Subject: b - Bruce Lewis
Thanks for the heads up on OurDoings: I've heard of it but had never really looked at it. Accepting zipped email attachments is really a nice feature, but there's no albuming at all? Hmm... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Yep. Instead of creating an album, you put a headline on (at least) the first day of the events that would comprise the album. It's designed for real life doings, that don't always fit neatly into albums. Disclaimer: I'm biased because I made it. - Bruce Lewis from fftogo
Hey, nothing wrong with having two asses ;-) (sorry, old Saturday Night Live reference). The only reason albuming (or at least, the option to have them) would be a sticking point for me is because I take photos that are related in subject or location but not time. For example: pictures of my tomato plants as they go through various stages of growth. Chronological sorting only would make it neigh on impossible for me to group those photos together. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
You can make a separate ourdoings site for your tomato plants. You just ignore the little paragraph telling you to question whether you really want a separate site because chronology works better than albums for most doings. If you have multiple ourdoings sites, crossposting means just checking one more box. - Bruce Lewis from fftogo
Ahhh, ok. Question then (since I have you here): would cross posting be a viable option from email? I.e. send it to 2 separate OurDoings email address to include it in two different sites? What about organization after the fact: would it be possible to include old photos in a new OurDoings site (say, my azaleas). - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
You can have different email addresses for different ourdoings sites. Organization after the fact is what ourdoings is really about, so definitely old photos are good. The subtle difference between ourdoings and blogs is that the operative date is when the doings happened, not when they were published. - Bruce Lewis from fftogo
Thanks for the details, Bruce. I'm taking a look at all the options given so far (except of course SmugMug, since there's no way for me to try them without purchasing =( ...) - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I use Flickr. Rocks. If you haven't used the Uploadr recently, there has been much work done on it (it does still have some warts). I personally am using the website one now (it's very capable now). In addition there are about a zillion 3rd party tools that work well w/ Flickr upload API...even if you don't like a particular upload tool, I imagine you can find one you're happy w/. I just email pics and vids from the G1; works fine. - Ken Kennedy
I use Flickr and like the tagging and sharing capabilities. I haven't tried any of the embeddable widgets, though. - John
I've been using flickr for a few years, and while I like the features (even if I don't use 80% of them), the overall quality of the site has gone down since Yahoo bought it. There are times when it just runs SO SLOW. Also, never post a picture of tights, you get put on some kind of pervert watch list, which flickr's staff is apparently completely unable to assist with. - Andrea G
We use the Flickr API for the Antarctic site: http://antarctic.fury.com and my personal photo blog: http://stories.phoenixfeather.net I love my SmugMug, but I use Flickr for most of my everyday things. - Rachel Lea Fox
OurDoings sounds like the simplified solution that would get me taking more pics, but Tina you just made me think a private.room on FF wouldeven do the trick. What do I lose by doing that? - Edward Zwart from Android
You wouldn't lose anything, Edward, other than the ability to create an album type setup (thought it could be hacked in by creating another private room, similar to the OurDoings solution of another site). Also, a private room on FF wouldn't be embeddable onto an external site (the room would have to be public, though you could restrict it to just you being able to post). ETA: also, you'd have to do some CSS magic to make it look right even after the embed. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Edward, the main difference would be that FriendFeed orders items by how hot the conversation is on them, while OurDoings keeps them in order of occurrence. I think the best approach is using both: http://ourdoings.com/ourdoin... - Bruce Lewis from fftogo
Right, thanks u2, gonna try the combo.... I really hope this gets me taking more pics. - Edward Zwart
Flickr no contest. Have images on the Eye-Fi card automatically post photos there as private. It'll automatically create Sets based on the date the photo was taken. From the phone, I have 3 emails addresses set up. One for posting public images, another for private, and another that will create a blog post with the image. For multiple photo attachments, I'm starting to use Posterous but also have it send the images to Flickr. - Rodfather
the ones ive seen the most are (of course) flickr, tumblr, and some yfrog site - Echo Streamer
Not sure if they are still offering it, but when I tried smugmug out they had a free trial period. - Aaron Choate from Nambu
I'm happy with Picasa, but Flickr was great whilst it lasted. I'd return if there wasn't that little problem of needing a Pro account to store more stuff, without the last 190-something items disappearing into the abyss/becoming unavailable. - Tyson Key
I love Picasa - Mike VanLare (slayerboy)
I tried smugmug but found it overly complicated. I have a flickr pro account that I enjoy and the community on flickr is pretty entertaining. - Morgan Collins from BuddyFeed
Just checked out Picasa's cost. The first 1GB is free and 10GB costs $20/yr. 10GB is a buttload of space. Probably 10,000 to15,000 screen sized images (1280x1280). Unless you are uploading full resolution images from your 5D Mkii, I doubt most people would be able to use up 10GB of space. - Jeff P. Henderson
I am using Flickr with the uploader plugin for lightroom. I have a free pro account through my internet provider. I use to use Zooomr but have moved most photos across to Flickr so cant comment on them recently. - CJPhoto
I use Flickr and had used SmugMug until recently. I really don't like Flickr's policies, so I might go back to SmugMug at some point, but I like the community aspect of Flickr. SmugMug are more expensive though. - Rick Cogley
Flickr for me. Great features, good community and options for free and pro accounts. - Kol Tregaskes
I mix it up between Flickr & KodakGallery. My family likes password protected photos, and printing things, so we started at KG early on. Flickr I use for blogging. I kind of hate their interface. But I like having a static link I can refer to, and some of the groups. - anna

“A class of fifth graders in California got a shocking crash course on the birds and the bees courtesy of their teacher and an x-rated home video she accidently included in a DVD of classroom memories.” - Anthony Citrano from Bookmarklet
That certainly would make for a memorable class. - James
Why in the name of insanity and all her whacky nephews did CBS feel the need to include a clip and a screenshot? - Matthew DeVries from fftogo
You really don't know, Matthew? - Vince DeGeorge
LOL! Wonder if it's leaked online? - Matt
@Matt: That's what I'm wondering too. Which parent *cough* father - leaked this on the Internet. - AJ Kohn

The best way to find the video is to do a search for Crystal Defanti on Twitter search, and then make sure the person linking the video follows zero and has only a couple 10s of followers - Matthew DeVries
Yeah, well, while I can appreciate the sentiment, I certainly don't want other people enjoying my private moments later; in other words, they WON'T be filmed! Just a no-brainer for me. YMMV, but you risk sharing that road with unauthorized vehicles. - MiniMage (FakeLifePerson)

I have friends that were two grades younger who borrowed a digital camera from an old teacher of mine when they were in 8th grade. Then they found her naked photos on the camera. She was fired, of course. - Daniel Zarick
I hope she doesn't get fired. I mean, big mistake for sure but ... um, we all have sex. I'd rather they see nudity over violence. - AJ Kohn

I'm wondering when the whole video will leak. - Burcu Dogan
it hasn't yet? - anna
@AJ authority figure, trust, all of that. news says she probably won't, though - mjc
@Michael: She made the mistake of splicing this onto a DVD. Outside of that, there's nothing else going on IMO. Did we think she *didn't* have sex before this happened? Or that she's some rarity who takes pictures or video of sexual activity? *shrugs* We just happen to know about her peccadilloes now - nearly everyone has 'em. - AJ Kohn

I disagree with those who think she shouldn't be fired, not because she has sex, or because she made a video, but because of the sheer stupidity of handing it out to students. So I'm going to do a startup. And College is getting in the way. UGH.
So, I wanna do wireframes for my site. BUT NO, I CAN'T DO THAT! Why? I've to re-derive a formula in math. SERIOUSLY? - Yuvi
You can do both. It sucks. But it can be done. I ran ETS out of my dorm room for many years. - Brandon Mendelson
college > startup - Allen Stern
@Allen: I can't find myself justifying 'college > startup'. Can you gimme a few reasons? - Yuvi
do both, or focus on college for now. but don't quit college. if you ever need it, you'll be sorry you did, and it becomes harder to do as you get older. - Patricia
Dude, I drove myself nuts trying to get a startup going in my senior year. Then I graduated and the next Fall the economy collapsed, but that's irrelevant. Just finish school, trust me. Oh, and don't hire your school friends unless they are co-founders/investors...leads to a lot of drama. - Neal Jansons
A good education is any day better than a startup in the longer run. If you have sights only on short term, college may not make sense. A good education opens up your mind to bigger thing and startup can always be a part of that big thing. The other way around is not possible. - Krishnan Subramanian
"A good education is any day better than a startup in the longer run." Unless you are Bill Gates. - Neal Jansons
I would stick with the education, but I would also find out if someone at the school is willing to mentor you through your startup. Many colleges provide entrepreneurial support, if yours does not, hit me up and I'll help you out. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Dan has a good point. You can take biz classes and network with others who are wanting to go into similar industries as well. - Neal Jansons
I know a ton of people who bypassed college, and then found it really, really hard to go back. In fact, I don't know anyone who rued going to college. In fact, one friend went back to college after being an early Yahoo employee, and it's been kind of sad the amount of "chip on his shoulder" shit he has from avoiding college. I'm in the biz and I love startups and new technology, but I... more... - anna
where withall to start a startup now, I bet those options and interests will expand 10-fold. So give yourself a treat and get an education. More practically, an education can only add to your startup idea. - anna
On an even more practical note, investing in education is the best investment quite literally. It increases your rate. - anna
I wouldn't use Bill Gates as an example. He hires college grads. If he really believed in his path he wouldn't, right? - anna
I did my first business without college. My best friend and I were managers at a bookstore and left and opened our own. 3 years later I went back to college and graduated last year. In retrospect, though the shop survived and is still open now, with a proper education I think we would have been much more prepared out of the gate, made fewer mistakes, and had much fewer hard times. My... more... - Neal Jansons from IM
Yuvi, I won't get into the reasons to stay in college, but if you do leave for a startup, it should be heavily funded so that you have a solid job for a few years. Otherwise, there is too much benefit to the education route. You will need to remember that college/university is more about getting the degree than really learning anything. More important is that you learn how to learn things because there is so much more to learn outside of schooling. - Rob Diana
Yuvi- I was in the EXACT same boat as you all last school year. I am going into my Junior year now and incredibly pleased to have stayed on this path. Instead of ditching college I am investing a lot of time in developing my ideas and work process, as well as getting even more involved in my school and the community than I was. Starting a week from tomorrow I am starting as the... more... - Daniel Zarick
Okay, I was never contemplating leaving College. But that's not because of my education - that was because of the amount of fun I'm having here. I don't know how you guys had it in college, but frankly speaking, the entire system from where I come from is rotten. People pride themselves on memorizing stuff (EVEN CODE!), and expect you to be the same. Yes, I do realize not everybody with me is like that - but the majority (and the people in power) are. (cont) - Yuvi
(cont) It wears you out if you sit in the same room for 7 hours, listening to otherwise really interesting stuff being taught in stupid (and often incorrect (one of my core CS staff still doesn't understand how pointers work)) ways is not, IMO, the best use of my time. Or anybody's time for that matter. I could be actually *learning* new stuff! I could be building new stuff. Coding, designing, talking to real people. Instead, I'm confined in a room and *taught*. (cont) - Yuvi
(cont) And as for the startup - I'll start bunking classes I feel are not necessary. Like the Data Structures class. I writhed around today as I saw 47 students being taught the basic concept of a Linked List with so many errors. The staff couldn't even get a basic 'typedef' in C right. SERIOUSLY? Yes, it might be just that it's my college, but that's all I've got, so I better go do something more productive than just 'get on with it'. - Yuvi
I'm not quitting school. I'm just going to give it as much importance it deserves, which, honestly, I don't think is much. - Yuvi
And by 'college getting in the way', i meant just that - College was making me do useless stuff when I'd rather actually learn/build something. - Yuvi
Yuvi- exactly how you should probably feel. That's what I have ran into too, but with an arts/media/communications school. I suggest trying to find a way to capitalize on the frustrations you have with the school, if possible. What can you offer these students better than the school? Build/create something that will supplement what you aren't learning from the school and teach yourself,... more... - Daniel Zarick
Yuvi- switch schools. - anna
I'm actually also not a fan of CS degrees. I'd go for a liberal arts education. The classes I've been in or CS have been really rote. Or, go to a better school where you can take better math classes, other interests. - anna
@Anna - I can't. I didn't do well enough in the Competitive exams (I got 191/200), so this is the best I get. There are a few that have better academics, but if I go there, I pretty much sign away my freedom. Talking to girls? NO. Mobile Phones? NO. Wanna do anything not related to 'scoring marks'? NO. - Yuvi
@Anna I wanted to major in Statistics. They wouldn't let me - in India, if you get 'good enough' marks, you shouldn't do Arts. You should do engineering! It's a really stupid thing that seems to have caught on with all parents :( - Yuvi
Similar pressure here - become a doctor. One of my close friends was pressured to become a doctor by her parents, and fought with them to do English. Now she's an English prof! - anna
@Anna: Really? I figured people in the US get a lot more freedom to do what they want to? - Yuvi
Get out of the "applied" game. Think - what is the best level of education you can get that will help you think, especially since you're a budding entrepreneur. MBA track? - anna
Yuvi- it depends on your parents/situation. Most of my friends growing up were first-generation and had a lot of pressure to be doctors/lawyers. A LOT OF PRESSURE. - anna
I can't switch. EOD. And no, I don't want an MBA :) - Yuvi
So basically.... I'm stuck here. I can move down, but not up. Atleast, it's better than what some of my friends are caught in. - Yuvi
Yuvi, pressure tends to come from the parents, so that kind of thing is probably universal with some cultural differences. I was in the engineering school because I had no interest in the doctor/lawyer/account paths. Accidentally ended up in a comp sci course and never left. - Rob Diana
Funny, I have a few friends that did comp sci as an escape from EE. - anna
Interesting note on parenting: let your kid pick the major. Geesh! - anna
It's not that I don't like CS. HELL I LOVE CS! Just this particular 'brand' of CS that seems to prevail in India = me no likey :( - Yuvi
the good CS class is rare. I wish I'd gone to MIT... now. At the time, I wanted to be a writer. But now, I'd love all of those classes. Sigh. - anna
@anna They did let me pick. If I wanted Electronics, or IT, or whatever - they'd have let me pick that. BUT IT HAD TO BE IN ENGINEERING :( - Yuvi
Once I told my Dad I was really enjoying the psychoanalytic writers from France, and he blew a gasket. He didn't want me studying psychoanalysis. To this day I have no idea why. - anna
Yuvi, statistics is considered "arts"? That is a damn shame, because that would be an excellent way to go. - Rob Diana
Parents do the weirdest things. My dad doesn't want me listening to Evanescence - I still have no idea why! - Yuvi
Yuvi, do you have access through your institution to a decent reference library with relevant periodicals? If so, take advantage of it, as it is the one thing that becomes prohibitively expensive once you leave the academic environment. - Michael R. Bernstein
They separate it to Arts colleges. Basically, you have 'engineering', 'medical', and 'arts/science' here. 'Arts/Science' group together everything, from Commerce to Accounting to Physics to Chemistry to Statistics to even Maths! - Yuvi
@Micheal: Yeah, they have one. I'm using it pretty well :) - Yuvi
Oh, ok. That is similar to the way most US colleges separate things as well. As usual, people can't get beyond a label and see the reality behind it. - Rob Diana
Yeah. People are the problem :( My parents aren't exactly to blame either - if I had taken Arts, they would've gotten an earful from anyone who had mouth about how they had 'spoilt my life' by letting me take a course that 'wouldn't get him a job'. Sigh. - Yuvi
An engineering degree doesn't necessarily get you a job anymore- flood the market, demand goes down, etc. - anna
And as it happened here - flood the market with engineers who can't 'engineer' stuff, then the value of a real engineering degree goes down. - Yuvi
Yuvi, I wasn't blaming your parents as much as just what tends to happen. My parents did not understand my decision to go into CS because they did not understand computers at all. I was supposed to be a civil engineer, and they liked the idea as they could "understand" that better. - Rob Diana
@Rob: I wasn't either. Just clarifying myself :) - Yuvi
