Grit: The skills for success and how they are grown | The Young Foundation - http://www.youngfoundation.org/learnin...
Grit: The skills for success and how they are grown, a new Young Foundation book published on Tuesday 30 June argues that Britain's schools need to prioritise grit and self-discipline. Drawing on evidence from around the world it shows that these contribute as much to success at work and in life as IQ and academic qualifications. Too much emphasis on exams and academic qualifications has pushed these life skills to the margins. With over a million young people not in employment, education or training and tens of thousands of graduates facing unemployment, it warns that a large proportion of young people have not been adequately prepared for a much tougher economic environment. - Bela Babik

python-keyring is seriously nice - http://lateral.netmanagers.com.ar/weblog...
Or at least it wasn't until Kang Zhang wrote python keyring, a module that abstracts the password storage mechanisms for KDE, GNOME, OSX and windows (and adds a couple of file-based backends just in case). - Bela Babik

Semantic Versioning - http://semver.org/
I call this system "Semantic Versioning." Under this scheme, version numbers and the way they change convey meaning about the underlying code and what has been modified from one version to the next. - Bela Babik

STM8S-Discovery: Microcontrollers reach a new low - Hack a Day - http://hackaday.com/2009...
A complete microcontroller development kit for little more than the cost of a bare chip? That’s what STMicroelectronics is promising with their STM8S-Discovery: seven dollars gets you not only a board-mounted 8-bit microcontroller with an decent range of GPIO pins and functions, but the USB programmer/debugger as well. - Bela Babik

8. The longer the player plays without a break, the more his sense of the reality of the world is built up. Any time he dies or has to restart from a saved game, the spell is broken. 9. Alternative paths, recoverable errors, multiple solutions to the same problem, missed opportunities that can be made up later, are all good. - Bela Babik

The Closure tools help developers to build rich web applications with JavaScript that is both powerful and efficient. - http://code.google.com/closure...
* The Closure Compiler compiles JavaScript into compact, high-performance code. * The Closure Library is a broad, well-tested, modular, and cross-browser JavaScript library. You can pull just what you need from a large set of reusable UI widgets and controls, and from lower-level utilities for DOM manipulation, server communication, animation, data structures, unit testing, rich-text editing, and more. * Closure Templates simplify the task of dynamically generating HTML. They have a simple syntax that is natural for programmers. In contrast to traditional templating systems, in which you use one big template per page, you can think of Closure Templates as small components that you compose to form your user interface. - Bela Babik

Python Package Index : pudb 0.92.13 - http://pypi.python.org/pypi...
PuDB is a full-screen, console-based visual debugger for Python. Its goal is to provide all the niceties of modern GUI-based debuggers in a more lightweight and keyboard-friendly package. PuDB allows you to debug code right where you write and test it--in a terminal. If you've worked with the excellent (but nowadays ancient) DOS-based Turbo Pascal or C tools, PuDB's UI might look familiar. - Bela Babik

ongoing · Concur.next — Messaging - http://www.tbray.org/ongoing...
The more I look at Clojure, the more I think it’s a heroic attempt to Do The Right Thing, in fact All The Right Things, as we move toward the lots-of-not-particularly-fast-cores future. I’m still working my head around Clojure’s concurrency primitives. We come to understand the things we don’t by contrast with the things we do; so I’m finding contrast between the Clojure and Erlang approaches to messaging instructive. - Bela Babik

I can run a long running batch job in one Python interpreter (say loading a few million lines of CSV in to a Redis key/value lookup table) and run another interpreter to play with the data that’s already been collected, even as the first process is streaming data in. I can quit and restart my interpreters without losing any data. And because Redis semantics map closely to Python native data types, I don’t have to think for more than a few seconds about how I’m going to represent my data. - Bela Babik

Even better, we can make use of a new library in version 1.2.5 of the SDK, called 'deferred'. deferred is a clone of Ruby's delayed::job library, and makes it easy to enqueue function and method calls on the App Engine task queue. deferred isn't officially documented yet - though documentation is forthcoming soon - so consider this post to be an exclusive first look at this new library. - Bela Babik
