tempyra on Hey guys. Today is my 18th birthday. What pieces of advice can you give me that you wish you knew/took seriously when you were my age? - http://www.reddit.com/r...
"Don't take life too seriously. At 18 I was halfway through a science degree, worked part-time, played for three orchestras, and did not, ever, just chill out and have fun. Sure, that's paying off now (in terms of career and finances) but it's a lot harder to make new friends and 'be social' when you have a full-time job, a serious boyfriend (not that he's holding me back; I'm just much more content to be asocial with him), mortgage, and those sorts of things than it would have been when I was 18."

tempyra on My girlfriend got back from the USA today and bought some M&M's lip balm. What other crazy products have guys got over there? - http://www.reddit.com/r...
"My grandmother is the source of most crazy family stories I have. She's this tiny Maori woman who didn't learn English til she went to school in the '30s (this is in New Zealand), got expelled from nursing school for giving one of the nurses a punch in the face, married my Swiss grandfather who was 14 years her senior, chain-smoked from the age of nine and gave up in the space of a few weeks at 70-something, and spends her days taking art classes (she's a very good painter) and hating on the neighbourhood cats. She used to live alone on a farm out in the backblocks of Northland, in NZ after my grandfather had to move into a nursing home. It was just her and her big black cat, which she was given by my youngest uncle about 12 years before its death and actually got along with quite well (my Grandma isn't the most tolerant woman). We all thought she was quite attached to this cat. Well, one day it died of old age. Grandma told everyone that and we assumed she'd buried it. Kind of. She..."

"I once showed my mother a blog I used to write for (infrequently) and comment (frequently) and she promptly posted a comment complimenting the post I wrote but with the username "Mum's watching you"..."

"I'm generally ok at following the first two steps you've got listed but it breaks down very easily when I'm stressed or tired. My brain goes in some kind of extreme over-analysing mode and I waste all my time trying to create a mental list of what needs to be done, prioritising it all, then planning every second of the available time... argh."

tempyra on What are movies that, in your opinion, are criminally under-appreciated? - http://www.reddit.com/r...
"No one has mentioned two of the movies that I have most appreciated recently - Nine Queens (Nueve Reinas) and The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen). Do these count as under-appreciated?"

"I saw The Thirteenth Floor years ago, before I met my boyfriend. We got talking about The Matrix once so I got him to watch The Thirteenth Floor with me and in return he introduced me to Dark City. Those three movies are all sort of linked to each other in my head now."

"Elegant Gothic Lolita. Or maybe pin-up girl style (e.g. like that of Dita von Teese). 'tis funny that my boyfriend and I were talking about this very topic in the car driving home. 20 minutes later, I spot it here on AskReddit."

tempyra on A Menstrual Cycle Question: Can You Smell When A Woman Is In Her Cycle? I'm Uncomfortable Asking, But My Curiosity Is Killing Me. Heterosexuals, LGBT, Men & Women, Please Respond. - http://www.reddit.com/r...
"I don't understand all the squeamishness exhibited by redditors on this topic. It's just biology. There are two reasons I can think of why some people think they can smell when a woman is menstruating. One, they can smell dried/drying blood and pieces of uterus lining, which is quite conceivable (no pun intended), and *may* be due to lack of hygiene from not changing pads/tampons or not bathing often enough **or** it might be unavoidable (heavy flow of blood). Or, they might be smelling a hormonal change, which can alter the natural scent of your body and has nothing to do with hygiene. I know when I have my period that my skin smells different. But to answer the OP's question, if it's someone I'm familiar with, then yes - I can smell when they have their period. I'm pretty sure what I'm smelling is the a hormonal change."

tempyra on AskReddit: Have you ever dated someone you met online? Internet is such a big part of our lives, I wonder how many couples out there are actually meeting online. - http://www.reddit.com/r...
"I met my current boyfriend online; we've been together for nearly three years. We bumped into each other briefly on a dating site, exchanged throwaway hotmail addresses and chatted on MSN the same night. He asked me out and a week later we met. It was instant win. I moved in with him about six weeks after we met - partly due to my lovely aunt (who I was living with) taking an unjustified dislike to him and kicking me out into a city/country I'd just moved to but anyway, no regrets. Before that I had a short (five months) relationship with another guy I met online, which ended disastrously (pathological liar who cheated on me), and dated several others, with varying degrees of success. When people ask how the BF and I met, I just say we met online 'cos we're geeks and don't elaborate further (people who ask those kind of questions are nosy IMO)."

tempyra on 3am, I'm just home from a club. My friends are assholes, they hate me, I hate them, and I cant meet a woman to save my life. Does life suck this much for everyone else too? I think you guys are my best friends. - http://www.reddit.com/r...
"This. If it doesn't fit perfectly the first time you try it on - don't buy it! Check to make sure you can move your shoulders comfortably without feeling constricted by shirts and/or exposing half your torso (unless you want to of course). The sleeves of shirts, jumpers, and jackets should end just between your wrist bone (the one on the outer 'top' side of your wrist) and hand and shouldn't move much further up your arm when you're moving around. Belts should be largely a cosmetic choice; your pants should fit well enough that you could go without if necessary. Also, when you try pants on make sure they're the right length - long enough not to ride up your leg as soon as you lift it (climbing stairs etc) but not so long that the bottoms catch under your shoes, thus wrecking the hems."

"One guy started at the same time as me, but he's super jokey and fits right in (and gives me more crap than anyone else - probably because I work mostly with him) so yeah, I don't get a break there. About a month ago a trainee guy landed up in our section but he isn't really getting 'hazed' because he's really quite weird."
