Building mobile first allows teams to utilize this full palette of capabilities to create rich context-aware applications instead of limiting themselves to an increasingly dated set of capabilities. Heavy mobile data users projected to triple to one billion by 2013. Mobile internet adoption has outpaced desktop internet adoption by eight times. Smartphone sales will surpass worldwide PC sales by the end of 2011. - Terrence Wood

Functioning Form - The Mobile App User Experience - http://www.lukew.com/ff...
Why are native mobile applications such a desirable user experience? Three factors come to mind: 1. Applications by their nature are task focused. They consist of optimized user interfaces for handling certain types of actions and data - a singular focus on actions. 2. Mobile devices also force software designers to focus on only the most important data and actions in an application. There simply isn't room in a 320 by 480 pixel screen for extraneous, unnecessary elements. You have to prioritize. This naturally forces out unnecessary elements. 3. Applications can leverage the rich set of capabilities of a mobile operating system. Web sites have a long way to go to deliver really rich UI. - Terrence Wood

The myth of the page fold: evidence from user testing | cxpartners - http://www.cxpartners.co.uk/thought...
3 design tips to ensure content below the fold is seen: (1) Less is more – don’t be tempted to cram everything above the fold. Good use of whitespace and imagery encourages exploration. (2) Stark, horizontal lines discourage scrolling - this doesn’t mean stop using horizontal full width elements. Have a small amount of content just visible, poking up above the fold to encourage scrolling. (3) Avoid the use of in-page scroll bars - the browser scrollbar is an indicator of the amount of content on the page. iFrames and other elements with scroll bars in the page can break this convention and may lead to content not being seen. - Terrence Wood

WebKit, Mobile, and Progress | Continuing Intermittent Incoherency - http://alex.dojotoolkit.org/2009...
If you figure a conservative 24 month average replacement cycle for smartphones, then the entire market for browsers turns over every two years. And that’s the historical view. An increasing percentage of smartphone owners now receive regular software updates that provide new browsers even faster. What matters then is how old the WebKit version in a particular firmware is and how prevalant that firmware is in the real world. As usual, distribution and market share are what matters in determining real-world compatibility, and if that’s a constantly changing secnario, the data should at least reflect how things are changing. - Terrence Wood

OpenID Pilot Program to be Announced by US Government - http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive...
the launch of a pilot program to allow members of the public to log in to participating government websites with their credentials from approved independent websites. That's right - someday soon you'll be able to log in to the websites of the Department of Health and Human Services, the National Insititute of Health and other government agencies with your accounts from Google, Yahoo and similar services. Below we discuss the privacy protection steps being taken, the usability issues and the ultimate significance of this announcement. This is a significant move for three reasons. First, it could make securely accessing government websites much easier for users. That would increase use of government services online and could kick off a virtuous circle of increased web-savvy service in response to increased citizen interest. - Terrence Wood

iPhone Application UI Design Patterns - http://flyosity.com/applica...
The iPhone is one big constraint — no keyboard, small screen, few buttons — so designing applications for the iPhone is an exercise in building smart, simple software. Bloated apps on the iPhone? You won't find many. Most applications pick one feature or group of related features and centralize the product around that central theme. - Terrence Wood
