It's cool how the eggs naturally arrange themselves in a pleasing symmetry. You might expect them to clump, but they act like there's a repulsive spring keeping them apart, the bowl providing the limit.
They are good eggs, they get along :-) Well, they didn't have long to last actually...
- Todd Hoff
What organizes them is the fun thing to think about.
- Todd Hoff
I started to write a long comment about forces exerted by circular objects in a circular container, but then I came up with a simpler explanation: It's because of physics.
- Slippy
Well, they're all of a roughly uniform size, the whites are gelatinous and under gravity will expand until they meet an obstacle. If placed in the pan fairly carefully and left undisturbed, the expanding albumen will push against each other with an equal force without mixing (not sure if it's because of surface tension or boundaries of partially-cooked eggwhite). The yolk will tend to...

- Slippy
So it's not that they are yelling don't come closer? :-) Thanks for explanation. I did put a 7th egg in and it just kind of sat there. Perhaps the pan was too small to allow an adjustment? Oh, no oil, but it's a non-stick pan so same effect.
- Todd Hoff
Yeah, I guess you'd have to put the seven eggs in at the same time.
- Slippy
In math it's called a "packing problem" — i.e., how can you most efficiently consume space/volume with a collection of units of the same shape and size. In computer science, it is a combinatorial NP-hard problem (i.e., really difficult to solve without using a lot of compute time). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- I like big Botts
What makes this a little more interesting to me Glen is how the arrangement organizes naturally. Like a soap bubble minimizes energy. Or protein folding. Or the arrangement of planets and solar systems etc.

I don't want to go through a backscatter x-ray because I don't want the radiation exposure. I don't want the pat down because I don't want to be touched there. Is it acceptable for me and a TSA agent to go to a room without cameras where I disrobe completely?
Body pain. I'm not sure exactly how, but I think it's the solution.

From the TSA web site: "Passengers should continue to expect an unpredictable mix of security layers that include explosives trace detection, advanced imaging technology, canine teams, among others."

How do you cross an ocean or several large states without taking days or weeks without flying? I'm not willing to give up practical and reasonable means to exercise my right to assemble.
- Tinfoil 2.0
You already gave up the right when you let TSA decide the terms of your travel
- WarLord
I guess you just have to forgo those things. I think the time for protesting and changing this has long past.
- Brian Sullivan
You know, private charters don't have the same security requirements. I wonder where the line is drawn? If you created a charter service with semi-regular routes would all the TSA regulations still come in to effect?
- Kevin Fox
Heather, did you mean body paint? I think we're all in for some body pain when travelling...
- Stephen Mack
Yeah, I really, really, don't ever want to fly again as things stand. Which is sad, because I used to really love flying.

@ Warlord & Brian, I've given up no rights. It ain't over until I'm dead.

I "opted out" of the backscatter scan on Friday flying out of DTW and had the "pat down". It was a full-on molestation. They ask you no less than three times if you want a private screening. Once before they start, once before they jam their hand between your butt cheeks and once before they move your junk out of the way to check the right and left sides of your groin. I did it in full...

is there anything similar out there? I still can't believe they haven't updated it to support PSHB on input (except for Blogger which is special cased and works perfectly for all of Google's blogs)!! There is this great real-time ability that GOOGLE created and feedburner breaks it.. WTF?!?

I thought they had updated it to PSHB? Of they've not done it by now, they are probably doing it on purpose. Though there is no way I'm using Blogger just for PSHB support.

It's PSHB out of feedburner but they still poll on the input side. Check out the comments on this Buzz post http://www.google.com/buzz.... "Disney has just debut a second full-length trailer for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland tonight that will also be attached to most prints of Avatar this weekend (in 3D as well). Everyone went crazy over the first trailer, but you ain't seen nothing yet, as this one blows that old trailer right out of the water! Alice on Wonderland stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry, Christopher Lee, Michael Sheen, and Alan Rickman."

Derrick, this looks like a "15 years later" thing, which is an interesting idea. I don't think rereading will do much, unless you want to refamiliarize yourself with the characters.

DJF, I read the book in college against my will. I do want to revisit it on my terms, although I'm sure the filmed version as envisioned by Burton will have his fingerprints all over it. Also, I'm trying to read more (am online WAY too much).

Can we please find a way to break up Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Bad things seem to happen when they team up. Wonderful, magical, whimsical, utterly horrible bad things.

lets hope Burton doesn't butcher another classic like he did with Charley And The Chocolate Wankfest
- Toby Graham
That's not entirely his fault though, I mean, Johnny Depp won't ever be Gene Wilder.Just watched the trailer: it looks horrible. The writing looks wholly underwhelming and I really really don't like the animation style.
- Will Higgins™
Agree totally with the underwhelming part, not impressed
- Mo Kargas
I hated his interpretation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And I do wish he would break up at least temporarily with Depp. Also, stretch out Burton! What if he made a heist movie, or a legal drama? Or remade Do The Right Thing?
- Derrick
Yeah, but a Burton heist would be a thin pale bank robber stealing all of the Love from the Vault of Metaphors. In claymation.
- Pete
I'm sinister, remember ;) Sinister and harsh :D
- Pete
Burton is a washed-up sell-out, who is now owned by Hollywood. Discuss.
- Will Higgins™
I'm mixed about this. I think Johnny would be a good Mad Hatter, but I'm not sure about Tim Burton as the director. And I have to agree with Charley and the Chocolate Factory, the only one to play Willy Wonka is Gene Wilder, not Johnny. Johnny freaks me out.

As of Saturday my parent's home was still there when my dad left. He stayed on the roof with a hose fighting it by himself. The firefighters helped him fight it for a while. They used a pump to pump water from the swimming pool to fight it but eventually the firefighters gave up. The neighbors house burned down. My dad was able to save our house, at least as of Sat. afternoon. It may be gone now. He was going to try and hike back in on Saturday night in order to bypass the roadblock by the Sherriff, but wasn't able to get back in there.

This philosophy collapses when you have real gridlock though; if all the lanes are clogged with stopped (or very slow moving) traffic and you try to employ this technique, you just end up pissing off the cars trapped behind you because you are going 5mph while everyone else is going 10.
- Phil Glockner
It's simply courteous and defensive driving. There should be space between cars for safety. And there's no reason to close ranks to not allow others in. We're all going in the same direction with the same goal. If you'd like others to be courteous, always be courteous yourself.
- ·[▪_▪]·
Living in LA has totally colored how I drive now. I remember going back home to SD to see my folks and I was agog at how much more aggressive I'd become. :(
- Derrick
It's not cheating, it's just optimal timing :-)
- Todd Hoff
It's the rocket scientist like this that causes wrecks behind him and road rage. Slower traffic keep right is the law (for good reason). He demonstrates why he should stay in the far right lane, go about his business, and stop trying to "fix all of the traffic around him". What an ego.
- Robert Kenney
the most important part is really the end, where he says how this style of driving is actually calming and altruistic instead of infuriating and selfish.... geez, if everything felt that way we'd have less problems once people got out of their car, all frustrated and pissy.
- Nicķ
I received a 404 error. There seems to be a traffic jam on the server as well.
- Louis Trapani
from iPhone
It's kind of obvious.. stop and go causes problems (and wrecks), even if it does take you longer, it doesn't FEEL longer because you aren't gas/break/gas/break, so less stressful drive. On the flip side, you think this guy driving slow (and not keeping the traffic pace) will cause someone else to slam him in the rear?
- Tim Hoeck
It might cause more disruption with cars behind him moving into the other lane to pass him. Honestly, I can't stand drivers who leave a huge gap in front during a traffic jam. Josh, it's basically just extending a tripod and holding it in the middle :) http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Rodfather
Interesting: "Governor Bush vetoed 2005 SB732, which would have reserved the left lane for passing, saying that drivers blocking the left lane are 'cautious and careful.'" - from "State keep right laws" http://www.mit.edu/~jfc...
- Micah
So, his basic tactic, albeit in a single lane, is similar to what I see highway patrol officers do when they want to SLOW DOWN traffic -- the highway patrol car swerves back and forth from fast to left to right lane and back and forth, lights ablazing, effectively doing two things -- creating a BIG GAP between the cop car and the rest of the traffic in front of him, and second SLOWS...
- Pete D
A few people already mentioned it above, but let me also say that this technique will not work in heavily trafficked roads. I've spent time in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok and you just can't leave a large gap between you and the car in front of you. First they will get filled by other cars really really quickly, and second you will just piss off the cars behind you.
- Andre P. Siregar
My wife and I debate this, because I sometimes do this myself. Stop and go traffic seems silly, when throughput would be higher if people left enough space between cars to absorb some of the braking. The website at http://trafficwaves.org/ is interesting, especially the link to http://www.ur.umich.edu/0304... that claims single-lane jams would be radically reduced if >=20% of cars had adaptive cruise control.
- Matt Cutts
kinda like why people are requested to exit in an orderly fashion during a fire. The only hindrance to this is getting over the feeling of being taken advantage of by the jackasses who ignore the order. But no pain no gain and you have to live with that for the greater good.
- vijay
I practice a type-A version of this in non-stop-and-go traffic, I'd call "driving Parkour", basically, I tend to drive over the speed limit, but I leave large gaps, and when I need to slow down, I avoid hitting my brakes and try to led friction/drag slow my car down before I have to hit my breaks. I look far ahead and try to plot out if I need to switch lanes in order to maintain speed...

Clarkson eluded to this in his unique crass manner, don't brake and drive clever. Save everyone money.

the biggest cause of traffic jams are the idiots who don't get in lane and bimble along in the middle lane without any plan to actually overtake anyone. I've seen people when there has been nothing on the inside lane and yet they won't pull into it as they should. This is even more obvious when you consider that articulated lorries aren't allowed to drive in the outside lane, meaning...

I always keep lot of room in front of my car for my safety but I think it takes lot of room and creates longer line.
- Ashish
While the line may be longer the actual distance you travel isn't any greater; you use less gas; your breaks will last longer; you're less likely to be involved in a crash and in fact it has an almost negligible affect on your travel time. Yes it is "slower" but on my 50 mile commute the difference is maybe a couple of minutes.
- Eoghann Irving
I agree Eoghann Irving. Wish everybody thought like this.
- Ashish
+1 Pete Delucchi. I do agree it's probably better for your mental health to drive this way. Assuming you don't mind the "insult" of everybody cutting into to your lane.
- Matsis
Drivers behind me may get annoyed but there is always room at the front ;)
- Ashish
I used to drive like this, until my commute changed to one that had more traffic lights. Then I realized that letting cars in front of me didn't make 1 second per car difference, it could make 10's of minutes, because I'd often miss traffic light cycles. I wish it wasn't the case - I guess it's going to depends on your commute.

"If you’re new to Twitter, life is easy. A notification comes in that someone is following you, and you probably follow them back. After all, you’re going to want some tweets in your stream. After a couple dozen of those, you may start using more discretion, looking over the person’s profile and their most recent tweets. But that gets old quickly as well, and inevitably you turn to using the secret ratio that nearly everyone knows (whether they realize it or not) to determine who is worth following back: “Followers” versus “following”. If a person has more followers than they are following, they’re probably a good person to at least consider following. If they are following more than they have more followers, the opposite may be true. The greater the discrepancy between the two numbers, the more likely each of those is true — to a certain point, since celebrities like Oprah throw this system out of whack. But for regular, non-Hollywood celebrities, the system works remarkably well as a filter."

I had created some notes previously for a post on "Follower Math" I never got around to writing, which would fit here: 1) If you have those typical 9,500 / 8,900 type of following/follower counts, don't think that we don't know you're using automation. Now of course, we may still follow you if you have interesting things to say, or if you'd make for a good JV target later :), but no one but the rawest of noobs thinks it's all due to your overwhelming popularity. (cont'd)
- Alex Schleber
2) I have always looked a bit at the followers/updates ratio as well, because if it's really high, you are probably spamming or gaming as described under 1), or if it's really low, meaning you have multiple times the amount of tweets to followers, that invites the suspicion that people are not that big on what you have to say. If you tweet a lot, you should naturally be getting...

Tracy didn't write this, yet it has her name and picture on it. Can Facebook remove all traces of a hacked account like this one and then set a person up with a fresh one? (I doubt it.)
- Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
"The unnamed Christian dating service I mentioned earlier had an exploit in the website that allowed the entire list of usernames and passwords for the site to be exposed." WTF? Uncool.
- Andrew C (✓)
If you're responsible for a website in 2009 and you store plaintext passwords, you should not only be fired, but not allowed to touch a computer professionally for half a decade.
- Andrew C (✓)
I still think the picture is funny - in the sense of how NOT to use the update box. I'm torn a bit - because I feel that people should be responsible about passwords and what online services they use, so she holds some of the responsibility. But Scott's right. This was a 4chan hack-job, and should come down. Her privacy has been compromised - even if the image does still make me laugh.
- Prosey BUTTONS!
People, read The previous comments. A Christian Dating site was hacked by some people in 4chan (you can actually download a file with their login and passwords). Many users use The same passwords in many services, that's why some Facebook profiles are now like The one in the picture. Facebook was not hacked.

[Okay, this is going to be a challenge to follow. Bear with me.] Everyone in our family says 'by accident' except my #2 son! My spouse and I grew up in Wisconsin, and we have subsequently lived in Illinois (Chicago), Washington State (Seattle) and Minnesota (Twin Cities) while the kids were growing up. My daughter (age 17) was born in Seattle but was only 4 when we moved to Minnesota,...

By accident. China. Never heard people use "On accident", maybe cos I live in Pennsylvania now..
- azalea
wow, Mark. That was a seriously in-depth response! I thought this would be a throwaway question but it's really taken off, here and on twitter. Looks like west coast/upper midwest people tend to use both "by" and "on" quite a lot, unlike midwest and northeast, where "by" is almost exclusive. there's lots of interesting research out there about kids being more linguistically influenced by their peers than their parents...

Annother cool innovation at Gnomedex: everyone has a little card. You drop it on the Microsoft Surface table. Then you can drag your contact info to other people's cards. It is badge sex. A lot more fun than business cards.
- Robert Scoble

That's innovative, but badge sex! The outcome is a reproduction of information so I guess it works. For the life of me I can't come up with something so catchy and memorable :)

Pea, that's kind of my point: what would we think of someone today who was named after 8 tracks in the 70s? And another perspective, I went to school with a kid whose parents were HUGE Clemson football pans. They named their son Clemson and his initials were ACC (which is the league the team plays in). He was tired of explaining the whole thing by the time he was 10...

Pea, I think that depends on the user's Outlook settings. It is optional.

So in other words, they don't "get" e-mail? :)
- Steve Lynch
from twhirl
If I saw an email signature like this, I'd click on all of the links just to see how active they are. Some people have all these accounts but aren't active, so what's the point? But of course this doesn't apply to you Louis. I'm just saying in general.
- Violet Mae Lim
Violet, these are active. I promise. :)

Robert has a free pass to tease or criticize anything I do. It's 100% fair game. I think Google Profiles aren't known well for folks to click through to yet. That said, Robert, bring it on. Here's the company's profile: http://www.google.com/profile...

And DGentry, yes, we can talk about Paladin soon. Promise.
- Louis Gray
Louis, I'm curious about the rationale for putting the Twitter link above the company website in the Google Profile?
- Tinfoil 2.0
LE: None. That's been fixed. :) Probably not thinking too much about it.
- Louis Gray
Logical: Twitter is the new website.
- Robert Scoble
Yes, e-mail is dead. It is also required in order to create an account on how many Web sites!?! I think I was required to link my OpenID account to an e-mail address. So much for Identitiy 2.0....
- Steve Lynch
from twhirl
Louis - I like the links on the home page, but EVERY employee gets that? I can tell you that lots of storage people are going to be scared by all of the "interwebs" stuff. I <3 the Emulex guys and know they're trying to update their image, but I'd think that most of them have bigger issues that learning to explain what FriendFeed and SlideShare are when people look at them funny.
- Stuart Miniman
Stu, I think I should use the word "optional". It's optional to everyone and every e-mail. And it's fine if some conservative industries aren't ready yet. It's time to shake it up.
- Louis Gray
Is it using Wisestamp? Very nice. FYI - Wisestamp is free, works w/ Gmail, Posterous, even the links.
- Liza + = ?
The nice thing about Wisestamp is you can delete the icons in gmail, if it is going to someone who you think has no idea what Slideshare is. Otherwise, wd be a pain.

Just a simple link to a homepage should be enough, small description about what you do, and phone numbers if you're into that kind of thing.
- Peter Stuifzand
Too many links in an email signature can cause the email to be flagged as spam. you need to test it out before using it. never can be 100% certain...
- Mike Nencetti
Are those custom icons, or something pulled from the web?
- Spencer
How does that degrade? Are there alt tags? Does the text/alternative or text/plain part properly remove the HTML and still preserve the pertinent information? Accessibility is just as if not more important than having something flashy IMHO. (Disclaimer: I use a text MUA and you'll get me to accept HTML mail sometime shortly after the sun suffers hydrogen exhaustion...)
- matthew john ernisse
yes but what's it mean? More is not bettter.
- Jeremiah Owyang
Personally, it seems way too cluttered to me. I would rather just have a link to a page on the company's website that lists all of their various connections. I'm almost as jaded to those icons as I am to banner ads. If I want to know about the company I will be looking at their website first, then their blog, then whatever other services interest me, but I'll always go to their website first. If that's not impressive then it doesn't really matter what they're doing in other spaces.
- Lindsay
Looks good to me. Simple. IMO, I would (1) bump name size +2 pts (2) maybe italicize title or choose different font, so it will jump out at you, but not as much as name (3) remove "www." from website. (4) I haven't seen this in real-life to look at overall point sizes. Often people's business cards need ALL pts sizes +2 to +4. As my 72-yr old Dad always reminds me, older people can't...

Andy, A Google profile is just assigned to a GMail account. So if you create a centralized GMail account, you can make a company profile. This one, for example, is emulexinc@gmail.com. More on the strategy here: http://www.louisgray.com/live...

I do like FF and use it almost every day. Wouldn't it be great if FB either left it alone so we can continue to use it as "professionals," or somehow incorporate it into a more "mature" version of FB that didn't have all the annoying, time-wasting apps, games, etc. I'd much prefer a totally customizable FF "wall."

I prefer FF over twitter and facebook, but all my friends are on twitter and/or facebook. Maybe facebook will get it right this time now that it has acquired FF. If they simplify it a bit more without removing functionality. Then I would spend a bit more time on FB. Lets hope all goes well with the merger. If not I'm jumping ship and going over to Google Wave. oh wait, I'm going to go with Google Wave regardless! ;-)

@robert yes they (we will) stay here, I think tat the migration process will take time and after reading @Paul Bucheit, I think that what we all are trying to get even if we don't say it explicitly is to preserve a kind of intimacy (beeing a part of the Huge faceBook community) don't mean that FF community will preserve their intimacy, why should a community be a plan one, (let imagine a community as a set of sub-community) that all.

@Robert RE "I have enough noise in my life. I don't need to have more" - isn't it a lot of noise having 26K subscriptions and 46K subscribers on your frf account? I'm kind of surprised - you create a community that large around yourself, yet when you see a new and unusual activity you just block it right away.
- Он будет добрый, ласковый
@Robert, patience? Who's talking about patience? It's about curiosity, not patience. When something strange and unusual happens around you, you can either try to stop it or try to see what it can develop into. You choose to stop - and it stopped. Well, not stopped - just moved to some other place. And do you really know what it was and what it was about to bring you?

@bdlangam From my perspective the #1 tip in this category is: Explore and define "best use" for yourself.
