"Disney has just debut a second full-length trailer for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland tonight that will also be attached to most prints of Avatar this weekend (in 3D as well). Everyone went crazy over the first trailer, but you ain't seen nothing yet, as this one blows that old trailer right out of the water! Alice on Wonderland stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry, Christopher Lee, Michael Sheen, and Alan Rickman."

Derrick, this looks like a "15 years later" thing, which is an interesting idea. I don't think rereading will do much, unless you want to refamiliarize yourself with the characters.
- DJF
DJF, I read the book in college against my will. I do want to revisit it on my terms, although I'm sure the filmed version as envisioned by Burton will have his fingerprints all over it. Also, I'm trying to read more (am online WAY too much).
- Derrick
if you want to really geek out, try to find a copy of "More Annotated Alice", an annotated edition with annotations by Martin Gardner. One of my favourite annotations is all the foreign language translations of "Jabberwocky."
- DJF
Can we please find a way to break up Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Bad things seem to happen when they team up. Wonderful, magical, whimsical, utterly horrible bad things.
- Noah Belson
lets hope Burton doesn't butcher another classic like he did with Charley And The Chocolate Wankfest
- Toby Graham
That's not entirely his fault though, I mean, Johnny Depp won't ever be Gene Wilder.Just watched the trailer: it looks horrible. The writing looks wholly underwhelming and I really really don't like the animation style.
- Will Higgins™
Agree totally with the underwhelming part, not impressed
- Mo Kargas
I hated his interpretation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And I do wish he would break up at least temporarily with Depp. Also, stretch out Burton! What if he made a heist movie, or a legal drama? Or remade Do The Right Thing?
- Derrick
Yeah, but a Burton heist would be a thin pale bank robber stealing all of the Love from the Vault of Metaphors. In claymation.
- Pete
I'm sinister, remember ;) Sinister and harsh :D
- Pete
Burton is a washed-up sell-out, who is now owned by Hollywood. Discuss.
- Will Higgins™
I'm mixed about this. I think Johnny would be a good Mad Hatter, but I'm not sure about Tim Burton as the director. And I have to agree with Charley and the Chocolate Factory, the only one to play Willy Wonka is Gene Wilder, not Johnny. Johnny freaks me out.

interesting. I've tried a few times to get animated images to work on FF without success.. I guess piping it through twitpic might be the answer!
- veo
veo, yeah Twitpic, RSS (MediaRSS), Delicious, Tumblr all seem to work. There are more than that but those come to mind.
- Josh Haley
Just one question, Josh: are you by chance spinning on 9 different Aeron chairs that were a steal after the first dot-com bubble burst? The future of the internets: you're looking at it =)
- Micah Wittman
could anybody describe how to create such a picture? thx
- Arnaud Fischer
Arnaud, see http://friendfeed.com/mokarga... for tips. And Josh correct me if I'm wrong, he uploaded to Twitpic the same animated GIF 9 times, then created a friendfeed post and attached all 9 images by URL (instead of choosing images from his hard drive). Images coming from twitpic, soup.io, etc will animate, but photos hosted by friendfeed itself won't.
- Micah Wittman
Did not sleep well with all the spinning. :p
- Josh Haley
from iPhone
It's infinitely more amusing when they don't all load at the same time. Spinning chaos!!!
- CAJ, somewhere else
Why the friendfeed limitation on animated .gifs? It seems arbitrary and odd to me. I could see wanting to limit filesize (animated .gifs can get large) but you can upload huge .jpgs without any trouble.
- veo
Mesmerizing like a lava lamp. Hey! You are a 'Lame-o Lamp'! And you might want to call the folks in the makeup department and get that forehead de-sheened. Remember, your forehead is an alternate landing site for the Space Shuttle - And you don't want to blind the crew on their final approach, do you? :-)

Thanks, Lindsay! :) I think that's the first time someone described wanting to systematically hit me on the head repeatedly, yet have it come off as a compliment. I would love to take credit like I was Andy Warhol or something, but alas I was just tired and felt like doing something silly. :p
- Josh Haley
from iPhone
yep, what Lindsay said. That was one of the first bona-fide instances I've seen of using Friendfeed as a medium for net art. You could get in the Whitney & stuff. GOOD JOB
- Kamilah Gill
LOL! I actually didn't mean it the way it came out (the hitting you on the head part, the compliment part is ok ;)). But I'm in tears laughing when I read your reply. Whack-a-mole always frustrated the heck out of me... I did a lot more staring than hitting when I tried to play. It was mesmerizing.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
you wait - the scary part of this comes when one of these ffoodoo heads stops turning, starts grimmacing and talking to you ..... have you seen one of these heads actually get up off the chair and curse the world??? ... the seeming dissynchronicity, the haphazard discord with which these dollheads turn might drive you ...nuts

"Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water... Swimmers were warned that a "monster shark" was prowling off a popular Australian beach, one that nearly bit a 10-foot great white shark in half last week, London's Daily Mail reported. Based on the bite marks, experts say the larger shark must be twice its victim's size. The smaller - relatively speaking - great white was hooked on a baited drum line when it was attacked, and was still alive when it was hauled onto a boat off north Stradbroke Island in Queensland. The fatally wounded shark was found just a few miles away from the island's popular beaches, a haven for surfers and bathers."

Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

As of Saturday my parent's home was still there when my dad left. He stayed on the roof with a hose fighting it by himself. The firefighters helped him fight it for a while. They used a pump to pump water from the swimming pool to fight it but eventually the firefighters gave up. The neighbors house burned down. My dad was able to save our house, at least as of Sat. afternoon. It may be gone now. He was going to try and hike back in on Saturday night in order to bypass the roadblock by the Sherriff, but wasn't able to get back in there.

I think the house may be ok. Well see. On Sat. night when I talked to my mom she said that he'd been able to save the house fighting the fire from the roof. I talked with my dad on the phone for the first time today. He seemed fine about it all. He said it was exciting actually. He was the only one there fighting the fire for a long time. He said it was really quiet except for sounds of the fire. He'd hear a tree fall and yell "timber." He was in pretty good spirits all things considered. He's pretty sure the house is saved and hopes that they might escort residents back in in the next few days sometimes in this part of Big Tujunga Canyon.

But comparing the size of a projected map to the screen size on an iPhone, it might be easier to see them this way.
- April Russo (app103)
Wouldn't the maps be in the device like any other gps?
- Cody Heitschmidt
Samsung has projector phones in the market now
- Taehoon Kim
Cody, the article says they come through a connection via bluetooth. Phones already have a connected mechanism for downloading maps. April, the size of the map might be bigger, but the ability to directly manipulate it is severely reduced. E.g. how would you get directions or look at a location other than where you are currently? Also, a backlit phone screen would probably be a lot easier to see than a projected one
- Cristo
Cristo, I guess I took "Maps can be downloaded via bluetooth" to mean that new or updated maps could be received via bluetooth and "Downloaded" to the device. If that is the case.. seems like a cool little gadget. If it is just projecting from another device you must carry around, how would it incorporate its GPS to put the red "u r here" arrow on it?
- Cody Heitschmidt
Cody, it would request a map from the device based on lat/long. If maps have to be manually downloaded, then what is the likelihood that the right map will be there when you go to use it? In my experience, manually loading maps has been a fail.
- Cristo
Who cares about tropical storms...watch out for massive flooding from my drool!
- Scott of Two Countries
Well, downloading maps for storage on the device wouldn't be that bad if it was regional maps. I don't think someone living in NYC needs every street map in the world. Having maps of Paris, London, and Tokyo would be a waste if all you need is NYC or the NY/NJ/CT tri-state area.
- April Russo (app103)
I had heard about something like this a while back. I try to do it as much as I can but jackalopes are always cutting in the space. Oh well.
- CAJ, somewhere else
Continue what you are doing Curtis. Don't mind those jackalopeseses
- AJ Batac
This philosophy collapses when you have real gridlock though; if all the lanes are clogged with stopped (or very slow moving) traffic and you try to employ this technique, you just end up pissing off the cars trapped behind you because you are going 5mph while everyone else is going 10.
- Phil G
Try that on british motorways and you'll find forty lorries and assorted 4x4's filling the intervening space. Most traffic jams would be avoided (except where sheer volume of traffic is the cause) if everyone left a two-second gap between them and the car in front - whatever speed they're doing - and don't brake unnecessarily
- Slappy Line
It's simply courteous and defensive driving. There should be space between cars for safety. And there's no reason to close ranks to not allow others in. We're all going in the same direction with the same goal. If you'd like others to be courteous, always be courteous yourself.
- ·[▪_▪]·
Living in LA has totally colored how I drive now. I remember going back home to SD to see my folks and I was agog at how much more aggressive I'd become. :(
- Derrick
It's not cheating, it's just optimal timing :-)
- Todd Hoff
It's the rocket scientist like this that causes wrecks behind him and road rage. Slower traffic keep right is the law (for good reason). He demonstrates why he should stay in the far right lane, go about his business, and stop trying to "fix all of the traffic around him". What an ego.
- Robert Kenney
the most important part is really the end, where he says how this style of driving is actually calming and altruistic instead of infuriating and selfish.... geez, if everything felt that way we'd have less problems once people got out of their car, all frustrated and pissy.
- Ňicķ
Actually, on British motorways they have variable speed limits (for example, on the M25 around London). They found out that, if they lower the speed limit (sometimes as low as 20-30 MPH), they can keep traffic moving; however, if they keep the speed limit high, they get a seriously bad traffic jam. It was interesting to watch.
- Glen Mistletoe
I received a 404 error. There seems to be a traffic jam on the server as well.
- Louis Trapani
from iPhone
It's kind of obvious.. stop and go causes problems (and wrecks), even if it does take you longer, it doesn't FEEL longer because you aren't gas/break/gas/break, so less stressful drive. On the flip side, you think this guy driving slow (and not keeping the traffic pace) will cause someone else to slam him in the rear?
- Tim Hoeck
It might cause more disruption with cars behind him moving into the other lane to pass him. Honestly, I can't stand drivers who leave a huge gap in front during a traffic jam. Josh, it's basically just extending a tripod and holding it in the middle :) http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Rodfather
Interesting: "Governor Bush vetoed 2005 SB732, which would have reserved the left lane for passing, saying that drivers blocking the left lane are 'cautious and careful.'" - from "State keep right laws" http://www.mit.edu/~jfc...
- Micah Wittman
So, his basic tactic, albeit in a single lane, is similar to what I see highway patrol officers do when they want to SLOW DOWN traffic -- the highway patrol car swerves back and forth from fast to left to right lane and back and forth, lights ablazing, effectively doing two things -- creating a BIG GAP between the cop car and the rest of the traffic in front of him, and second SLOWS...

- Pete Delucchi
A few people already mentioned it above, but let me also say that this technique will not work in heavily trafficked roads. I've spent time in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok and you just can't leave a large gap between you and the car in front of you. First they will get filled by other cars really really quickly, and second you will just piss off the cars behind you.
- Andre P. Siregar
My wife and I debate this, because I sometimes do this myself. Stop and go traffic seems silly, when throughput would be higher if people left enough space between cars to absorb some of the braking. The website at http://trafficwaves.org/ is interesting, especially the link to http://www.ur.umich.edu/0304... that claims single-lane jams would be radically reduced if >=20% of cars had adaptive cruise control.
- Matt Cutts
kinda like why people are requested to exit in an orderly fashion during a fire. The only hindrance to this is getting over the feeling of being taken advantage of by the jackasses who ignore the order. But no pain no gain and you have to live with that for the greater good.
- vijay
I practice a type-A version of this in non-stop-and-go traffic, I'd call "driving Parkour", basically, I tend to drive over the speed limit, but I leave large gaps, and when I need to slow down, I avoid hitting my brakes and try to led friction/drag slow my car down before I have to hit my breaks. I look far ahead and try to plot out if I need to switch lanes in order to maintain speed...

- Ray Cromwell
Clarkson eluded to this in his unique crass manner, don't brake and drive clever. Save everyone money.
- Toby Graham
the biggest cause of traffic jams are the idiots who don't get in lane and bimble along in the middle lane without any plan to actually overtake anyone. I've seen people when there has been nothing on the inside lane and yet they won't pull into it as they should. This is even more obvious when you consider that articulated lorries aren't allowed to drive in the outside lane, meaning...

This is actually an impressive use of game theory/backward induction to determine an optimal strategy. If this guy isn't a mathematician or work for the highway department, he should be.
- Mark Trapp
i do the same here in Rome/Italy since 1998
- alex
Well we can't get people not to talk hands free or text while driving, so I have to think it has to be impossible to get people to adopt/understand.
- Matt Soreco
Great to see this taken up again - I've been doing this since I first read his site years ago...
- Kevin Marks
I always keep lot of room in front of my car for my safety but I think it takes lot of room and creates longer line.
- ashish
While the line may be longer the actual distance you travel isn't any greater; you use less gas; your breaks will last longer; you're less likely to be involved in a crash and in fact it has an almost negligible affect on your travel time. Yes it is "slower" but on my 50 mile commute the difference is maybe a couple of minutes.
- Eoghann Irving
I agree Eoghann Irving. Wish everybody thought like this.
- ashish
+1 Pete Delucchi. I do agree it's probably better for your mental health to drive this way. Assuming you don't mind the "insult" of everybody cutting into to your lane.
- Matsis
Drivers behind me may get annoyed but there is always room at the front ;)
- ashish
I used to drive like this, until my commute changed to one that had more traffic lights. Then I realized that letting cars in front of me didn't make 1 second per car difference, it could make 10's of minutes, because I'd often miss traffic light cycles. I wish it wasn't the case - I guess it's going to depends on your commute.
- Nick Lothian
for the most part this will work; unless you're in the NYC area or such.
- clarke thomas
Glen, unfortunately, variable speed limits on the motorways here in the UK don't actually work as well as you might think. During heavy traffic, most drivers look up at the sign as it changes from 50 to 40 and think "If only". The other problems are the speed cameras in those areas - we have two types. To avoid being caught by the normal cameras, drivers zoom between cameras at 80+mph...

"If you’re new to Twitter, life is easy. A notification comes in that someone is following you, and you probably follow them back. After all, you’re going to want some tweets in your stream. After a couple dozen of those, you may start using more discretion, looking over the person’s profile and their most recent tweets. But that gets old quickly as well, and inevitably you turn to using the secret ratio that nearly everyone knows (whether they realize it or not) to determine who is worth following back: “Followers” versus “following”. If a person has more followers than they are following, they’re probably a good person to at least consider following. If they are following more than they have more followers, the opposite may be true. The greater the discrepancy between the two numbers, the more likely each of those is true — to a certain point, since celebrities like Oprah throw this system out of whack. But for regular, non-Hollywood celebrities, the system works remarkably well as a filter."

I had created some notes previously for a post on "Follower Math" I never got around to writing, which would fit here: 1) If you have those typical 9,500 / 8,900 type of following/follower counts, don't think that we don't know you're using automation. Now of course, we may still follow you if you have interesting things to say, or if you'd make for a good JV target later :), but no one but the rawest of noobs thinks it's all due to your overwhelming popularity. (cont'd)
- Alex Schleber
2) I have always looked a bit at the followers/updates ratio as well, because if it's really high, you are probably spamming or gaming as described under 1), or if it's really low, meaning you have multiple times the amount of tweets to followers, that invites the suspicion that people are not that big on what you have to say. If you tweet a lot, you should naturally be getting...

Ah. The "love cave" bit did seem a bit much. Not cool, 4chan. I wonder if potential employers can appreciate the subtlety of a situation like this? Tracy didn't write this, yet it has her name and picture on it. Can Facebook remove all traces of a hacked account like this one and then set a person up with a fresh one? (I doubt it.)

"The unnamed Christian dating service I mentioned earlier had an exploit in the website that allowed the entire list of usernames and passwords for the site to be exposed." WTF? Uncool.

If you're responsible for a website in 2009 and you store plaintext passwords, you should not only be fired, but not allowed to touch a computer professionally for half a decade.

I still think the picture is funny - in the sense of how NOT to use the update box. I'm torn a bit - because I feel that people should be responsible about passwords and what online services they use, so she holds some of the responsibility. But Scott's right. This was a 4chan hack-job, and should come down. Her privacy has been compromised - even if the image does still make me laugh.

People, read The previous comments. A Christian Dating site was hacked by some people in 4chan (you can actually download a file with their login and passwords). My brother Morgan just congratulated me on my jury service and read the story I wrote about it. He noted that now the convicted felon has my name on record (as lead juror) and this is what he had to say: "So. You ever see the movie ‘Cape Fear’?". That's my bro!
Imagine the felon googling your name from the prison's computer after he settles in and finding the story of his trial as told by the lead juror.. the thought process and all.

Including replies? because I really can't stand full signatures on email replies. If there's a lot of back and forth, the signature just adds clutter and gets in the way of the content. I like it on the first email in the exchange and then a perhaps a shortened version thereafter.

In my training of employees on how to do a Email Signature, (where the corp hasn't stated a standard) is to plan for plain text clients. Have your information there. Do one font only and stick to that. Nothing fancy in the font either. Get the information there so that the recipients can contact you or get more information about you. Company Logo's are only if you really need them. Key thing is to provide a sort of Business Card (information how to get a hold of you) at the bottom of emails.

Are those custom icons, or something pulled from the web?
- Spencer
How does that degrade? Are there alt tags? Does the text/alternative or text/plain part properly remove the HTML and still preserve the pertinent information? Personally, it seems way too cluttered to me. I would rather just have a link to a page on the company's website that lists all of their various connections. I'm almost as jaded to those icons as I am to banner ads. If I want to know about the company I will be looking at their website first, then their blog, then whatever other services interest me, but I'll always go to their website first. If that's not impressive then it doesn't really matter what they're doing in other spaces.

That's an incentive for folks to use that service and offload kiosk use at the terminals. Very savvy marketing by the folks at GoGo and Delta combined.
- Jay Cuthrell
well, it's 12:12 a.m. and I'm perusing FF from my iPhone via BuddyFeed before turning in. so yeah, I guess I count. "Here!" (raises hand)
- Don Faulkner
from BuddyFeed
I recommend FF to some of my clients, and there are some companies and nonprofits with presences here—not like Twitter, but I'll be curious how that will be affected when FB takes over more. Most have FB fan pages, groups and/or causes, too.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
Yeah, me too. I just saw the request to have a comment link at the bottom of the comments from one of your friends just yesterday and here it is. I'd say they are listening. Thanks FF.
- Keith Rowland
И так чятег, пока Скобл не поговорит с нами представителями СовиетФрендфидика, все мои записи теперь можно читать в этом тредике. Пользуясь случае передаю Парню Бухайту и его команде большой привет, в связи с тем что [He can has sleep naw].

- Matthew Horton
More than a friend of FriendFeed, was starting to use it as a full lifestreaming platform and loved it. It's made a whole lot of other sites make sense.
- achean
Hi, I'm Bette... I don't know if I'm an addict, but I can't stay away... I keep checking, just to see if something's new... and I cry if I get no responses to a post. Is that addictive behavior? :D
- Bette Cooper
Yup, I have blocked all the impersonators now. You will still see them, but I don't see them and they no longer can comment on any of my items.
- Robert Scoble
@scobleizer As far as I can see you have blocked not only the impersonators (who renamed themselves back the moment they found out you have a problem with this) but most of the folks who chatted there.
- Махатма Бугоганди
@meatreach yes, see next thread. Scobble becomes anti-Russian.
- Never Impersonate You
Maxatma: well, that's just too bad. I speak English. Sorry. People who don't speak English really don't have any business commenting on one of my items, except in rare cases.
- Robert Scoble
Why you, Robert Scoble, don't block users from Spain or Italy? China or arabic countries? Those users that comments on non-English languages?
- Never Impersonate You
@Robert, in fact they do speak English. But they also do make fun of Friendfeed and everything that's going on there. You can block them or take part in this fun. ;)
- Махатма Бугоганди
I prefer FF over twitter and facebook, but all my friends are on twitter and/or facebook. Maybe facebook will get it right this time now that it has acquired FF. If they simplify it a bit more without removing functionality. Then I would spend a bit more time on FB. Lets hope all goes well with the merger. If not I'm jumping ship and going over to Google Wave. oh wait, I'm going to go with Google Wave regardless! ;-)
- Captain Jack
Bu arada Russian friends Turkiye'ye selamlar gonderiyor.
- ideali
@scobleizer i can speak english and i beg you to remove bann from all russian friendfeeders, because we are all from it-community, working in internet companies and we came with peace, you asked for feedback from friendfeed addicts — we show you how really it is being frf addicts, we change names, we chat, we making things that are not serious. Why so serious? Unlock people, they are not bots, they just playing the game of real addicts and have fun. Common.
- ideali
shaun: I started this post to demonstrate that a lot of us are still here and aren't likely to leave. At least not quickly. So, life goes on after FriendFeed gets acquired by Facebook. Point proved.
- Robert Scoble
Robert He says ; Our Russian friends say to hello to Turkey
- Osman Üngür
ideali: have them send email to scobleizer@gmail.com and I'll unblock anyone who says they weren't impersonating me.
- Robert Scoble
Hector: good morning! I need coffee.
- Robert Scoble
@robert yes they (we will) stay here, I think tat the migration process will take time and after reading @Paul Bucheit, I think that what we all are trying to get even if we don't say it explicitly is to preserve a kind of intimacy (beeing a part of the Huge faceBook community) don't mean that FF community will preserve their intimacy, why should a community be a plan one, (let imagine a community as a set of sub-community) that all.
- abdellah
Wow!! So many likes and comments; is it a record Rob?
- Er-fun
@scobleizer thank you, for understanding. be cool, guys we just want have fun here a little. Take care.
- ideali
@Robert RE "I have enough noise in my life. I don't need to have more" - isn't it a lot of noise having 26K subscriptions and 46K subscribers on your frf account? I'm kind of surprised - you create a community that large around yourself, yet when you see a new and unusual activity you just block it right away.
- Махатма Бугоганди
@Robert, patience? Who's talking about patience? It's about curiosity, not patience. When something strange and unusual happens around you, you can either try to stop it or try to see what it can develop into. You choose to stop - and it stopped. Well, not stopped - just moved to some other place. And do you really know what it was and what it was about to bring you?
- Махатма Бугоганди
I'm here all the way from South Africa! I dig this service and I'm not quite ready to give it up. Regardless of the news about the acquisition, this remains an awesome service.
- Paul Jacobson
I'm new to ff but find more valuable information here than anywhere else!
- Janet Crance
I don't know how I rate my addiction relative to others, but I shared Hitler's reaction upon hearing the acquisition news (despite happiness for Paul and Bret)
- Chris Duffy
I'm sure this is part of Scoble's plot to poll all the people who really read his posts, and unfollow the rest. So I raise my hand.
- Shivanand Velmurugan
Just a wannabe. Not an addict (yet).
- Carole Hicks
It might also be a way for me to filter down my "following" count (diff (my followers, scoble)) are the only people I really need to follow. Those that scoble follows, I can safely unfollow and use Scoble as my social media filter :)
- Shivanand Velmurugan
pardon the arrogance but it really sucks this great forum of sharing will turn into a myspace humdrum. Now I have to find another SM where first adopters and well informed techies won't haft to compete with general "noise"
- earl wallace
Well, here's a comment I can later delete and rob the owner of 1500!
- Matthew DeVries
I just mention the 1500 mark since it was such an iconic query to see... that and the 500 Likes club of FF posts. It's pretty exclusive stuff... but it's also sobering to note that the subject matter required to get to these levels isn't always a uniform mix of cares/concerns.
- Jay Cuthrell
When I heard the FaceBook news, I tried to quit FriendFeed and I couldn't... I'M HOOKED
- The Web's Wendell Wittler
i clicked the "1488 more comments" and my computer nearly exploded. and yes, i am using an amiga 500.
- jack
Now that I have instructions (thanks LouisGray) and figured out my Bookmarklet! I am LOVING the ease of use! addict - not quite...
- Robyn Hawk
Actually, I lied. I am not a die-hard friendfeed fan. I desperately want to be but have just not been able to get into a good "feeding" rhythm. Maybe I need to add some more friends
- Anant Gairola
I don't need to be addict. I'm just here, everyday, absorbing so many geeky info :D There's no place like FF
- Lysender
I'm still with ya, Robert. Whatever FB paid for FF, it wasn't enough!
- Donald C. Lindsay
New here, but learning. Tips for best use?
- Barbara Langham
@bdlangam From my perspective the #1 tip in this category is: Explore and define "best use" for yourself. Despite potential "finishing" impression of some productive consolidations in this collective-collaborative cognition space, the emergent #cognosphere is still WAY too nascent to assert anything other than initial impressions. March to the beat of your own drum; build your own...
- michael silverton
yeah sorry, late. was at Shambhala Music Festival, I know tardy, sorry...
- sofarsoShawn
I'm getting hooked, still figuring it all out
- Michele McGraw
I think I do. Not enough contacts to make a impression.
- Michael Schlag
Is it wrong for me to feel a certain sense of betrayal? I didn't spend all my time here making connections, adding in interesting content and trying to get friends to join so that friendfeed would get acquired by Facebook.
I guess I should be glad that I made a bunch of new friends here and have learned a lot, but I just wish that the guys at friendfeed hadn't sold out to a company that doesn't really need what friendfeed has.
- Alex Scoble
But let's be honest, they built this to make money and survive. Gotta say I'm pleased it's shown to be worth something, and I'm guessing a significant something for FB to acquire them. Wonder if they were offered shares in FB as part of the deal?
- Mark Aitken
I guess we are all betrayed - in certain terms.. but FB should have done its market research before it got this property. Most of the USERS are not happy with FB type of connections or that property , so we left and looked for something better, it was FF. Now a new hunt will begin !
- Peter Dawson
actually, you kinda did. if users like you didn't create so much value, Facebook wouldn't have acquired (notwithstanding feelings of betrayal).
- jeffscott
I share your sentiments in many ways. I have been proud to tell others who had no idea that FF existed how good it is (lets hope not was!) Lets hope they keep the spirit alive. By the way the minute I see any target 'phorm' style advertising, I am off to find a new up and coming. I wont run to Tumblr yet but I do have one foot in already, just in case.
- Kevin J Hatton
My immediate reaction was Facebook will push ads onto their users. I think FriendFeed could be seriously screwed up with live moving ads, so that's hopefully out of the picture from a purely usability view. Friendfeed is all about realtime web information. I then wonder how in that case will the monetise the relationship. My guess? Facebook will show live conversations and hopefully they will rip out the poor IM implementation in Facebook. The purchase may be nothing more sinister, I hope...
- Mark Aitken
Feeling a bit of betrayal, or unhappiness atleast. Have a Facebook account but rarely use it since it's a walled garden. Preferred Friendfeed for better technology, organization, but even more so it's openness!
- LonelyBob
Betrayed is a strong word, but I do feel a loss of ownership. And it's not like I really 'owned' the community, or the content I put into it. All the same, I contributed, and the more a person contributes to something, the more they feel a sense of entitlement (?) or ownership. Now it's as if I've had someone just pull a rug out from under me.
- cecily
I don't give 2 cents if that's wrong or not but I feel betrayed.
- vijay
Peter, I doubt FB gives a crap about FF users. FB wanted the talent that worked at FF, not the product.
- Jeff P. Henderson
I understand the sentiment, but this is the way of tech apps;.nothing stays the same for long. Feeling betrayed is not gonna change anything. Either you roll with the changes and try to force the positive, or you quit.
- Rene Wirtz
I agree with Cecily that betrayal is a strong word. I have always understood that FriendFeed is a free service, thus I can't claim control over it. Though, really, I wonder what s going to happen to my thousands of likes, comments, posts, etc.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Completely concur with you Alex. Just goes to show maybe there is room for another platform...
- Arleen Anderson
As I said elsewhere, this was a talent + buzz acquisition. I sorta wish I could download my FF history and host it on my own server with SweetCron or something.
- Anthony Citrano
+1 Alex. EndFeed's the word... well, how about everybody grieves for 5 minutes, then gets the search for greener pastures under way. There was plenty to be improved about FriendFeed (been saying that since well before this announcement), so I just hope that someone else has the databasing/real-time wherewithal to build something like this, improved.
- Alex Schleber
Facebook doesn't even give a crap about their own users
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Do any of these sites give a crap though Alex? I understand what you are saying and how it makes you feel this way, but I realised a long time ago.. they are ALL businesses and the bottom line is NO they don't give a crap... because they are NOT depending on you to be ok..
- Rob Sellen :o)
friendfeed at least acted as though they gave a crap...at least until today. And there's nothing about being a business that says "crapping on your customers is OK". Business is business does not equal "screw your customers to make a buck".
- Alex Scoble
from IM
That and stunned. Lately I've been describing Friendfeed to the uninitiated as "a facebook without all the crap." Unfortunately, it looks like now it'll just be integrated into all the crap, if kept at all. That said, congratulations to the FF team - this is a big win for them and they deserve a lot of kudos. I look forward to the web apps they come up with in the future.
- Chris Rogers
"Is it wrong for me to feel a certain sense of betrayal?" - in an emotional sense, no. In a literal sense, yes, unless you can show me where FriendFeed made a commitment to you that they'd never change in a way that didn't fit your ideals for the service.
- Edward Coffey
i'm just hoping they will keep friendfeed separate and use it as a testing ground for new features.
- Edgar Rodríguez
They made a commitment to us when they built a service that wasn't called Facebook or Twitter. They made a commitment to us when they listened to our feedback and participated in our feeds. They made a commitment to us with their actions. A commitment that has been forever shattered with their deal with the internet equivalent of the devil.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Lindsey is right.. the thing is Alex... friendfeed is STILL here... ;o) YOU are still here...
- Rob Sellen :o)
Not for long, Rob. I give friendfeed a year tops.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
And forget about any improvements to the site. You know that the team will be much too busy trying to figure out what the next iteration of Facebook should look like.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
I can empathize with these sentiments, but Social Media is a set of tools--I appreciate the connections I make, but I'm not getting too emotionally worked-up about the tools changing.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Yep , definitely a sense of foreboding there ... "for the time being"
- Tom Horn
why? friendfeed.com is not going anywhere is it... no reason this place couldn't stay.. what if they LOCKED friendfeed users in now.. said.. we WILL reward you users for helping us, testing things for us etc... ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Rob...did you not notice who bought them? Facebook is known for doing dick for their users.
- Alex Scoble
Absolutely not Alex, I feel the same way. About 18 months' collection of content, great friends, an open community all gone. We now are marched into an atmosphere of censorship and walled relationships where users don't amount to a hill of beans. Really, really sucks.
- jcunwired
I'm sure FF is going away one way or another; there's no way that the combined company is going to keep developing full steam ahead on both products. Is it wrong to feel betrayed? I don't know. I don't personally feel betrayed, but I guess I'm not nearly as invested in FF as you and others are. I do think the end result may be something positive though; the ability to interact with the larger FB community on this level is something that could be truly wonderful. Then again, it might just end in tears...
- Tristan Seligmann
Especially when we consider that while they built the tools, we as a community are what made it great - both with our usage, our dedication and our re
