WOW! Realtime in FriendFeed for you, Robert, looks like a stock ticker. Thanks for sharing the video. - Alexander Grundner
Robert, my friendfeed doesn't load THAT fast.. ;) But I do love the real time feed! - Daynah
Real Time FTW! - TheHenry
Robert that video was awesome to watch. That setup is amazing. You get your audience involved, respond and recognize them. Changing the game each and every day. - Geoff Farinha from Nambu
I can only hear the audio - there is no video...what could be the problem? - Mahesh Patwardhan
Mahesh: do you have the latest Flash player. - Robert Scoble
No love for flash 10.0 r22 on linux. Black video. :( - Steve "Daddy do it!" Lacy
BTW, the embed shows black with audio, and the link to qik.com shows the video but no audio. How odd. - Steve "Daddy do it!" Lacy
How many eyeballs do you have? - Craig Brownell
Steve, the audio on the Qik site works fine for me. I do get black on the embedded version - guess I need a flash upgrade. - Laura Norvig
The video was blank for me here as well. Using Windows XP with Google Chrome [updated today]. Was able to watch on the Qik site. Great video Robert ;) - David Damore
I'm getting blank video. Only audio. OS X/Safari. - Diego Barros 
I have the latest flash player... theres still no video here.. however I can watch it on the qik.com site. - Mahesh Patwardhan
No video in there. - Alex Sauceda
Also black video on the embed here. - EricaJoy
If you use the Qik link instead you won't see the blank video. I think the problem is on the FF side. - Alexander Grundner
I'm torn between thinking - "that is awesome" and "what's the point?". For Scoble it makes sense as his job depends on keeping up with all this and commentating on it. For the rest of us, not so sure this realtime river of news is really where the future is taking us. - Barak B
Love this video. You gave me an idea on utilizing feeds on a vertical screen - Thomas Chai
Apparently, Scoble either wastes his time watching 3 friendfeed columns instead of writing a new book or revising Naked Conversations (in real time) OR he just showed us how the job looks like for some community managers. - Michael Jung
Amazing how many posts come in. More data than the NYSE. - Bill Hertzing
when i grow up i want to be a geek like Scoble - daniela barbosa
You'd have to become a child to be more like Scoble :) His child like wonder is his trademark - Chris Saad
cool! :-) - Luca Conti
serious overload. i'd tune it all out. it's too much. - Don Martelli
Don: of course it's too much, but that's why my list of searches grows by about five every day. I want to have the best list of geeky searches in the industry. - Robert Scoble
...Scoble, i am as realtime nuts as u with 65 soc news monitors therefore it irritates me that the new friendfeed doesn't allow realtime button-refresh twitter updates into the feed - or i was too stupid to find the icons. it also s*ks that u cant add all u old icons to make automatic refreshes in case there is some glitch. anyone else can help out in case scoble is busy ? - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
I read somewhere that Scoble singe-handedly save (or something to that effect) FF. Now I can see how. Thanks for sharing this. Btw, I also got black screen here, but fine video in Qik, using OSX/Firefox. - waraney rawung
ewing: I have no idea what you are asking for. Tweets come here within seconds. Seems real time to me, why do you need a button update? - Robert Scoble
Darth Scoble is more machine than man now. - Rolf Schewe
interesting.. Scoble is watching the world in his war room.. :D - Pico Seno
Proves once again how sorely track (realtime search alerts) is lacking. The setup as it is now is better divided between right and left eye serving corresponding brain hemispheres. The streams then should be tweaked in accordance with brain hemisphere functional/cognitive asymmetry; the result would be hyper-realtime web/personality blend leading to eventual zombiefication and madness :-) - Mindaugas Dagys
That's amazing, that's the reason why you're the best at what you do. Thank you for sharing that video, Robert. - Diego Espinoza V.
Can someone please tell us how to setup the Twitter stream like Robert has?? I want to set that up sooo bad. - Jeff
Looks like Nambu on the Mac doesn't it?? - Kim Flintoff from twhirl
Jeff: You turn an Apple monitor sideways. YOu open up three different Safari or other browser windows. You stretch those windows to look like my screen. You point them at various Tweet streams. - Robert Scoble
I guess this is not live and you are saying what are you seeing here LOL I am seeing a black screen :o( - David Gross
David: not live. It works here. Do you have the latest Flash player? - Robert Scoble
hmm.. didnt work in Chrome, doesnt work in IE, I havent installed Firefox yet LOL - David Gross
Wow that's crazy quick! - Kevin Whalen
yes, have latest flash, would not play in friendfeed but when I clicked on link it worked on the qik site - David Gross
I watched half of it till I started getting dizzy and shut it off LOL dont know how you do it Robert.. I guess gradually you can. ever use Pocketwit? LOL you would miss 90% of tweets. - David Gross
btw I would like a windows mobile app for friendfeed or website :o) - David Gross

I don't have time to write a blog post about RSS being dead. I'm too busy writing apps that move RSS from here to there in new ways.
That was a pretty silly statement by Steve Gillmor. Maybe RSS readers are dead, but RSS is certainly long-term glue--as you are proving. - Bill Rice
How else was he going to generate the pageviews? - coldbrew
so RSS is *un*dead? braiiins. :) I'm sure you've encountered the same thing, but I don't think RSS will ever be consumer tech in it's raw (RSS reader) form. It was destined from the beginning to be plumbing. - mikepk
I used to describe it as the defacto web data API. Perfect? no, but darn useful. - mikepk
Mike, it's like HTTP. - Dave Winer
wow, thats great. Would like to know more about it through one of your blog posts - Sampad Swain
Yeah, electricity is dead as well -- I don't see anywhere! - Jorge Escobar
You know since Steve was adopting a musical theme, I went looking, and I haven't found it yet. I think it's on the Love You Live album where Mick Jagger responds to some people carrying on in the audience with a dismissive even derisive "Everything okay in the critics section?" He has a picture of the Beatles, they did some great music, but RSS is more like the Stones, rough and dirty. But it rocks. - Dave Winer

AIG's ex-CEO refuses $22 million severance payout: report: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance
(Reuters) - American International Group Inc's (NYSE:AIG - News) former Chief Executive Robert Willumstad has rejected a $22 million severance payment, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the decision. Willumstad e-mailed his successor, Edward Liddy, of his decision to forego the severance since he was not able to execute the restructuring plan he had developed, the paper said. - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
Finally someone with some sense of ethics involved in this whole affair. - Robert Scoble
Wow. That is a classy move. - Shawn Farner
It's certainly good PR, but somehow I doubt he's hurting for cash... - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl
Bob, I am sure you right but it has not stopped folks like Carly F from HP from taking the money. To me it demonstrates a degree of character, honor and ethics not seen often enough. - R. Ferguson
He's been soaking up millions for so long, I think he can afford not to take the severance. - rowlikeagirl
Probably not hurting for cash, but it's still probably hard to walk away from $22 million that you have coming to you contractually speaking. I hadn't heard of anyone else walking away from that kind of money. - Thomas Hawk
I don't really care if he isn't hurting for cash...that's a classy move if it's true. - Kamath (नमः)
Rare enough to be praised. Perhaps Wall Street golden boys are starting to realize that they never, ever deserved the obscene amount of money they were paid. - Antoine Bertier

Maybe he was trying to avoid a lynching? - Chrimmus Tad
Hey, I'm glad he did it, and it is rare, but I guess I'm just too cynical to raise a monument to him just yet. However, if it sets an example for the future, than it can only be good. Somehow, though, I doubt it'll change the culture of corporate robber barons and golden parachutes. One can hope. - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl
Maybe trying to avoid FBI investigation in CEO's role in failure by buying Jail Free card, after raking in hundred of millions in salary/perks, probably will end up in jail anyways. - imran
@tad yes, lynching by pushing all those money in paper form down the throat - I have no doubt there would be a queue among those who had their mortgage "downsized" recently :) - A.T.
Wake me up when one of these guys talks about returning the millions and billions in bonuses they were paid out during the run up to this mess. Foregoing a golden parachute is the very least they ought to be doing. - Eric P
Certainly seems like a classy act to me, regardless of his present wealth. Without a doubt it sets a good example. Thanks for pointing to this, Thomas. - J. McConnell
Don't judge a book by its cover. This is one "selfless" act in a long line of acts. I'd bet this move was purely political, of the PR variety. - Sergio Cruz

While it's pretty cool to have a 21MP camera for $2500, the amazing part is that it can record 1080p video @ 30fps. It's the only digital camera I could find that can do that, and the quality (38.6Mbps) exceeds broadcast quality. - Gabe from Bookmarklet

Seriously, Why is everyone Bitching About The New Facebook - http://www.gordonswaby.com/2008...
I like the new Facebook. To quote Obama: Facebook for change :) - Baard @ Pixum
I like the new Facebook. Change is possible. Yes we can! - Elliott Ng
I love the New Facebook, I've been using it since the first moment I could. Which means I'm actually using Facebook again, a major change. - Aram Zucker-Scharff from twhirl
I like it now. I didn't like it at first and kept switching back to the old one, but then I just jumped in and haven't looked back. - James Ferguson
I didn't like it at first either but it's growing on me. - Ray Grieselhuber
The new FB is a fail, IMO. A lot to like in the new design, but the overwhelming clutter of combining the news feed and wall is just way too much. Poor implementation. Also while the Apps had gotten annoying and out of control, the current placement has basically killed a small industry of app development. - Steve Isaacs
...I think the new interface is alright tho... - Andrew from twhirl
I love it. I don't get why people hate it so much. I think it's cleaner than the old FaceBook. I guess people like all the apps on the profiles, which mad them load really slow a lot of times. - Molly, "sorry"
People don't like change and people like to complain; that is why there is so much fuss. - Arthur Guy
I love change. I love redesigns. I don't love bad, cluttered design that frustrates people. - Steve Isaacs
Because parts of it are very clunky. I like the front page because it makes it easier to comment on things. But, I hate the new profiles. They are very clunky and don't flow well. - Mathew™ one of a kind
I'm not. I don't use Facebook. :-) - Dave Winer
The AJAX tabs for the profiles work well. The 3rd party applications, however, need to be updated to take advantage of the tab system - Glenn Batuyong
@dave I couldn't sign up to facebook.. wouldn't allow me to use the name I want to use. I refuse to use my RL name, I prefer the identity I forged for myself online.. but they don't make any allowances for this :S http://www.alphaxion.com/... - alphaxion

i don't mind it as user, but as developer it's been a total clusterfuck - Bill Seitz
I also like it. For basically all the reasons that people have already listed. - Chieze Okoye
The usability is a vast improvement. I don't post directly to FB, instead I let FriendFeed, FeedHeads, Twitter, etc update it. I just use it for the livefeed of all my friends that still aren't on FriendFeed yet. Why isn't the LiveFeed the default tab? - Troy Forster from twhirl

Ok, after spending time with Photoshop CS3's HDR functions which only sporadically work on some images and downloading a trial version of Photomatix's HDR software, I can officially say that HDR is a huge pain in the ass and definitely not worth my time or energy anymore.
it's not worth your time. definitely not worth it. just another tool that isn't really necessary - sam b-r
Adobe really needs to work on HDR. With a lot of tweaking you can get good results. The secret is in the conversion to 8 bit. It will never do the overly-stylized effect of Photomatix. - Andrew Smith
Even though I've seen some other people do some interesting things with HDR, all of the images that I played around with look like crap. Photomatix makes your images look like syrupy sweet and sickening cotton candy and Photoshop is just too frustrating to use when it's HDR processing only works on about 20% of my RAW files for no explainable reason. I'd expect more from software that I paid $700 for. - Thomas Hawk
Photomatix made me want to throw up. I did create a few images with Photoshop converting them back down to 8bit but CS3 would choke and crap out on about 80% of my RAW files that I tried to use so I couldn't really merge to HDR with the files that I really wanted to use. At least I can now say I've officially given HDR a run and it's not for me. Regular old processing in Adobe Camera RAW beats HDR hands down. - Thomas Hawk
Are you going to upload the HDR images somewhere? I'm actually experimenting with HDR, and would like to see some other HDR images. Edit: I know how to find HDR images on Flickr, but I am still interested. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
possible248, they look like puke. definitely not going to upload them anywhere. - Thomas Hawk
Try doing merge to HDR > move the slider farther right than you think, making the shadows too dark. Then convert to 8bit keeping the gamma and offset too dark still. Then bring it back with Image > adjustments > Exposure - Andrew Smith
Thomas, I know what you mean. I have only done 16 HDRs in the couple of years that the fad has been out. I probably have another 20 that I have the images for I just cant get myself over the effort. I use photmatix. If only my HDRs weren't so "interesting" on flickr or I'd never do it again. I like Lucis art better but the programmer has gone dark and the new Lucis tool is going to cost $500. http://flickr.com/photos... - Mark Interrante
I think a Photoshop familiar person will likely have better results with simply manually blending multiple exposures. The HDR blend tries to "automate" something that people have been doing manually in darkrooms for ages. Multiple exposures are great for getting nice ground and sky in the same image when there is a lot of dynamic range in between. - Jason Wehmhoener
I'm tired of HDR photos. They look a little too good. - Sean Davis
On a related topic, does anyone know of an iphone app that would use the camera to take HDR? - Mark Interrante
HDR became hackneyed before I really ever started to play around with it. It does seem like a lot of work. - Matt
I tried HDR on a few photos - decided that I'd rather go back and reshoot in better light than do anymore HDRs if at all possible. :) - Patty Hankins
It is possible to make HDRs that do not have that HDR "look". I prefer to use HDR as a way of getting just a bit more dynamic range. See the first two on the link http://bit.ly/38IpH2 (made with Photomatix). Photomatix (actually HDR in general) requires quite a bit of tweaking so I am not too fond of the extra time needed to process things. - Jauder Ho
the HDR feature in Photoshop really isn't worth a dime. Photomatix and a bit of understanding of why you're doing what you're doing with the tonal mapping or light recovery and you're in and out very quickly. - Frank Jonen from Alert Thingy
Thomas, Your images have to be tone mapped after they are merged, otherwise they WILL look like crap. Photoshop CS3 is not the greatest tool for HDR. Photomatix is a very good tool if you learn how to use it. Here is a link to an article by Uwe Steinmueller who is an expert at HDR on how to shoot and process images in Photomatix. http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc... - Jeff P. Henderson
"they look like puke. definitely not going to upload them anywhere." - HA! I played with HDR in photoshop also and was completely turned off. Haven't tried photomatix yet. - Justin Korn
Here are a couple HDR images made from a single RAW file shot on a Canon 5D. http://www.flickr.com/photos... http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Jeff P. Henderson
Trebor, I was kind of playing around and made them have that HDR look, because I thought it looked interesting. You can do HDR images that don't look like the typical HDR. Check out Uwe Steinmueller's article above. He does many HDR images that you would be hard pressed to tell that they were HDR. It does take a lot of practice to do HDR correctly. I've seen HDR images that span the spectrum from cartoonish to completely undetectable. - Jeff P. Henderson
A comment on the intent of HDR. The original intent of HDR photography, where several images of the same scene are taken at different exposure levels and then merged, is to produce a photographic image that has the apparent dynamic range of human sight. A single image taken with today's state of the art DSLR has the capability to capture somewhere in the vicinity of 10 to 14 stops of... more... - Jeff P. Henderson
(CONT) When several images are merged, they often appear quite dark or just plain don't look correct. This is because no display or output device has the dynamic range to properly display it. To correct this, programs like Photomatix do a tone mapping which basically moves everything in the image into the dynamic range capability of your monitor or printer. The end result is that you... more... - Jeff P. Henderson
I disagree. I think HDR sometimes can add something to an image if applied correctly and with cause. I'm not sure what platform you are on, but Photomatix Pro on the Mac works like a charm. - Rutger Blom
This photo, while not the awesomest, would not be possible without HDR - handheld, no flash, 3 frames bracketed +1.33 0 -1.22 and 0 = f/22 1/30 iso800 http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Andrew Smith
Photoshop CS3 HDR frames side-by-side http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Andrew Smith
Agree Trebor. Edited the order of frames now. It's not the best photo but it's an example. - Andrew Smith
HDR is certainly very time consuming and for that reason alone I can understand everyone who does not want to bother with it. But the results can look as realistic as you want. In Photomatix, a realistic look is achieved by setting all "Smoothing" controls (Light Smoothing, Highlights Smoothing, Shadows Smoothing) to high/very high values and be careful with introducing too much microcontrast. - Ole Begemann
Bert Monroy over at Rev3 has a recent episode talking about exactly this: CS3 + Photomatix - http://revision3.com/pixelpe... - Holger Eilhard
There's a group on Flickr that specializes in "Realistic HDR": http://flickr.com/groups.... Not all photos in the pool qualify but it might be a good starting point for examples. - Ole Begemann
Have to disagree with you there, yeah there's some awful HDR imagery on the net but used well you can produce some very interesting pictures. I like it though it is just another way to get creative with your photography - Kol Tregaskes
Here's Erik Reinhard with his take on "What's wrong with 'Flickr HDR'?": http://www.cs.bris.ac.uk/~reinha.... "HDR is a good thing --- if done right. Unfortunately, the Flickr HDR community does it wrong on a massive scale. ... If you want to deliberately produce an artificial looking image, then by all means do so. However, please do not abuse tone reproduction to get there. And please do not then go and call it 'HDR'." - Ole Begemann

@Russellreno & Mark Trapp - Thanks! I have been contemplating Lightroom and was curious as to why he's still with Bridge as there are more "creative" opportunities via Lightroom over Bridge. - JA Castillo
Thanks all. Lisa, yes, I shoot 96% with prime lenses. I do have a Canon f/4 70-200 zoom that gets used sometimes, but mostly all primes. I used to shoot with zooms but I feel like I get better, sharper images with prime lenses. - Thomas Hawk

JA Castillo. I tried Aperture a few years back. It didn't handle vignette processing back then so I uninstalled it. I'm sure Aperture is a perfectly fine photo editing software package but at this point I'm just more used to Adobe products and I can see no compelling reason to switch to Aperture. I'm sure Aperture is perfectly fine though and sort of view the Aperture/Adobe debate like the Canon/Nikon debate. Both are fine, depends on your preference. - Thomas Hawk
Muahaha, now I will be like Thomas Hawk. My plans for world domination are coming along nicely. - Bwana ☠
some time ago i decided to learn how to use a set of tools and stick with them. I use Dowloader Pro / Bridge / Photoshop. - Mário Pires
In terms of Lightroom, I tried the last beta a few years back out but it was still buggy. I need to spend more time with it though as the best photo processors I know are using it. I'm hoping to spend some time learning it and plan on doing a review of the new upcoming version of it in conjunction with the upcoming version's release. - Thomas Hawk
Seems like my process is quit similar except I started using LightRoom recently. What I don't understand is how you go through 500 pictures in one evening with this process. It took me about 2hrs last night to go through 50 pictures taken and 18 that I processed. Anyway, thanks for sharing! - Justin Korn
Aperture does have vignette sliders now (both gamma and exposure, gamma produces lovely vignetting imo). Check my flickr for examples, I use Aperture exclusively. - Benjamin Golub from fftogo
Very useful Thomas, thanks for sharing :) - Shey, Jamaican of FF
@Justin Kom: I can run through about 250 photos in a few hours in LR. It depends on what everyone means by 'processing,' I guess. A lot of them just get quick adjustments, and I end up copying and pasting adjustments a lot too, with a few tweaks after. This really speeds things up. - donato from twhirl
@Justin Korn. Redbull. - Thomas Hawk
Nice. Also, oops, Korn, not Kom. With the font I'm using in Twhirl it looks like "m" instead of "rn." - donato from twhirl
The Beta of Lightroom 2.0 has better vignetting control (an option to add vignette after cropping) and the software is pretty stable overall. I've been a Lightroom user since the very beginning, and I switched to 2.0 as soon as the beta came out. (I've run about 2,500 images through it with no problems.) It plays well with the other Adobe tools, so if you still want to open up in Bridge or ACR, all your settings will be shared across the applications. - Brian Johns
I really like the LR 2.0 improvements, especially the multi-monitor support and the better vignette controls. I stay out of 2.0 most of the time, though, because: "Develop settings applied in Lightroom 2.0 beta are not guaranteed to transfer correctly to the final version of 2.0. This is particularly true for localized corrections." - donato from twhirl
@Donato - I think I need to learn to find pictures with similar lighting and batch process them like you mentioned. @Thomas - I need to learn to like Redbull... - Justin Korn
Justin, I've gotten pretty good actually at processing images very quickly. I have to as I'm trying to publish 1 million photographs before I die and there's just not the time to spend too much time on any one image -- so I process fast. The jump from CS2 to CS3 was a *huge* breakthrough in my own photo processing productivity. Eventually technology should make the sole limiting factor your ability to mentally process what you want to do. - Thomas Hawk
There are, by the way, some *amazing* photographers who probably spend a lot more time than I do processing their images. merkley, Cole Rise, Kelly Castro all come to mind. - Thomas Hawk
"Typically less than 10% of my photos need additional work beyond camera RAW." -- Wow. This speaks volumes to your enviable talent behind the lens as well as your skillful use of Adobe Camera Raw. Thanks very much for sharing. - Taylor
I got lazy and stopped shooting in RAW....now it looks like I'm going to have to start again... - Snay Trivedi
Making the leap to Lightroom probably cut my processing time in at least half. I think I've used Photoshop about 5 times since I've started using LightRoom 6 months ago! But even so, I feel like I spend just as much time (if not more) processing as taking the pictures. I agree though, some of the most amazing photographers spend WAY more time processing their photos. - Justin Korn
I started using Lightroom about 6 weeks ago, and it has actually encouraged me to shoot more because the workflow is simpler than what I was doing before. I'm glad to hear that vignetting is going to be improved in 2.0. That's my major qualm with the software right now. There are, however, definitely instances where Photoshop is highly beneficial. - Matt
Take away - Use prime lens, compose in camera, shoot raw, process. I need to invest in some prime lenses. - Russellreno
LR processing - On first pass I view all photos in slide room and quickly rate 1 or 4. I delete the 1's and then view and continue to process. If I don't like a 4 on second pass it becomes a 3. Eventually I can say i am finished. - Russellreno
Really brilliant post Thomas thanks v much and I agree with the person who suggested that a Scoble video would help to record the mastery. I've been trying to work this stuff out for ages but never quite applied myself to it the way you have. Now I just have to use the Hawk methodology on about 10000 photos already in iPhoto....oh and learn how to take better pictures...that might be harder! - Anne McCrossan
thanks for sharing! - Tom
@Russellreno: I do almost the same thing. I never delete anything, though. @Thomas, do you ever delete your RAWs? - donato from twhirl
While I don't do any processing to any of my pics I found this a good read and really liked the other links in the blog. I am surprised that your everyday bag contains primes and no longer telephotos. - Becca
Donato, I rarely delete any RAW originals, even technically horrible shots or mistakes. These always could be converted into abstracts later on -- and then there is always the case where what seems like a throw away might later turn out to be significant. This was the case in a famous photo taken of Clinton and Lewinsky. I save everything. Storage is cheap. - Thomas Hawk
@Thomas, that's always been my take on it too. I don't delete anything for the same reasons. I'd rather keep them and know that they are there if I ever need them or find a use for them, instead of just deleting them forever. I've very rarely ever said "Oh, I'll never use this." and deleted it, because you really never know. - donato from twhirl
Fantastic article. I really enjoyed reading your links to the older articles also. My process is rapidly envolving, and your article helps immensely. I've got a backlog of 90,000 pics from the past 2 years, and anything that speeds the process is wonderful. - Mitchell Tsai
I posted my comment on Thomas's blog as it is too long to post here. http://thomashawk.com/2008... - Jeff P. Henderson
Great comment Jeff. I think more people need to at least try out LR. They just don't know what they're missing. - donato from twhirl
Thomas I'm curious why you chose to go with Lightroom over Aperture? - bill Streeter
Robert Scoble
Photographers: PhotoCycle is up. First show with Ansel Adams son and Pro photog Marc Silber. http://www.fastcompany.tv/photocy...
The video is "jumpy" - is this a server issue or video issue or my connection issue?? - Justin Korn
Justin: sometimes it jumps for processor utilization reasons. Other times because of bandwidth issues. I usually download the videos to my local hard drive by subscribing to the Rss feed in iTunes. - Robert Scoble
I've added the feed to miro... looking forward to watching the first ep after it downloads. - Grant Bierman
It seems the issues were only at the beginning. Seems to be running fine now...thanks! - Justin Korn
Don't miss the music that Ansel himself recorded (he played piano before picking up photography as a career). Also you'll see Thomas Hawk who was along for the shoot and will show up in future segments. Finally this has video of Ansel that has never been seen before from the family's personal collection (we show you him going through the same closed gate we did - Yosemite opened up Glacier Point just for us so we could shoot there. - Robert Scoble
wow, I did NOT know Ansel Adams played piano before picking up photography - amazing talent!! thanks for sharing... wish i could have been on that trip you and Thomas Hawk went on with Ansel's son - Susan Beebe
Stuart: yes. - Robert Scoble
Great job on the video. Nice to have the place to yourself I imagine. I look forward to more of these. - Andrew Smith
That was a very good debut. I hope there will be more episodes from your trip to Yosemite. - Andy Roth
It's really impressive Robert. Is there any way to get it full screen? - Victor Ryden
Yes. If you subscribe to the RSS feed, you can download it and play it on any player you want, but you should be able to click a button in the player which will load it full screen. - Robert Scoble
Robert, really nice work, nice camera work, great editing, touching story. Can't wait to see more - Bryan Thatcher from twhirl
Good work Robert. Subscribed! - Chris Nixon
Really digging this Robert. Will be tuning on regularly. - Tsega Dinka
Congrats, Robert. I've been looking forward to this since you first announced it. Will definitely be following. - Taylor

Our Kids Are Failing - And It's All Wikipedia's Fault! - http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive...
Wikipedia AND videogames are to blame. - Jeduan Cornejo from twhirl
Can we blame Scoble too? - Pat Hawks
I run into a lot of people who question the legitimacy of blogs, but I don't feel that they are any better or worse than Wikipedia or the NYT. Our parents were taught to be descriminating in their information consumption. We were taught the same thing. If "kids today" aren't learning this, then we should blame the parents (thank god I'm not one!). They are the ones ultimately responsible for how their children turn out. - Jason Ellis from twhirl
I think 'anonymous' won that round in the comments. Anyway. You can't teach students to not use Wikipedia -- talk about a losing battle... But it seems like you could teach them to use it as a jumping-off point. Hell, I bet if teachers embraced Wikipedia as a tool, then students would learn to be skeptical and question the contents and do their own research, if only to annoy the teachers. (All comments tossed from my comfortable perch outside the educational environment.) - Kirk Kittell
I've told my kids that Wikipedia is a good place to start, but it's a good idea to verify with multiple sources. Some days, they make me want to make a bogus change to a wikipedia entry just to prove a point. - ha3rvey (just a friend)
Wikipedia lists all the article sources at the bottom of the page, right? What happened to using Wikipedia to find other sources? - Pat Hawks
wait a minute: he is saying that HIS kids are failing.... - Luigi Centenaro
Louis, isn't it a bit early to start worrying about this? :) - Mark Dykeman
Luigi and Mark, haha. :-) If our kids have already failed, that's on me. - Louis Gray
friend's an english college prof and refuses to consider wikipedia as a source for any paper. Funny. - anna sauce
Wikipedia shouldn't be a source, nor should an Encylcopedia. Go back to the ORIGINAL source, lazy dopes. - Pat Hawks
Is our children educated? - Chrimmus Tad from fftogo
Wikipedia is a horrible source. On all but the most mundane purely technical articles it is a biased database moderated (and more and more often hijacked and abused) by a small group beset by political infighting and drama. Pay about as much attention to http://www.wikipedia.com as you would http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/ - Soulhuntre
I think it's funny that kids *think* it's a source - anna sauce
I haven't found Wikipedia to be as bad as Soulhuntre claims. - Brent Newhall
Wikipedia is not considered a legitimate source by many universities, and for good reason. But I don't think Wikipedia can be blamed for kids failing or making anyone stupid. What's stupid is thinking that Wikipedia is the Oracle of all knowledge and that everything is 100% true. It's great for getting information and the vast majority of it can be trusted, but it takes a little wisdom and common sense to know that you have to use multiple, diverse sources to verify anything. - Shey, Jamaican of FF
I think if your looking up the specs for an obscure WWII era submarine model, Wikipedia is excellent :) I have been disillusion by the manipulation of the system by Jimmy for use as a weapon in his own sex life and the drama that constantly rolls through the moderation group over there. It's pretty disheartening. - Soulhuntre
Wikipedia is a spring board, doode. Since there is no original research on Wikipedia, you can (and should) always go back to the originating source. - Pat Hawks
Pat Hawks is spot on. It is a place to begin one's research not conclude it. - Mathew A. Koeneker

blaming scoble is bullshit. turning track back on is job one, not demonizing people who popularize service. Clinton spin.

What else can we blame Scoble for? How about gas prices? Yeah, that is all Scoble's fault too! - Andy Roth
jaiku is running sweet on google ! - Adrian from twhirl
Except, of course, that no one from Twitter actually blamed Scoble at all. - Ian Betteridge
@ian, maybe not by name, but it did seem that they generically blamed their more popular users who post in rapid succession. At least that's how I read it. - Thomas Hawk
I don't think "blame" is the right word, especially if you look at the comment in context. The original post is chock-full of Alex saying "This isn't working because our architecture wasn't built for it", with no reference to blaming users for that. That single quote has been pulled out of context - and spun into a big story. - Ian Betteridge
I'm with Ian -- as usual, Robert has made it all about him :-) - mathew ingram
@adrian, on google? - Tyler Gillies
Ditto to Ian. All about Scoble. Again. And he turns it into pushing FriendFeed which I love *but* do not find *replaces* Twitter. Not by a long-shot. - Barbara K. Baker

twittermeme has launched! - Susan Beebe
Twitter blamed a list of users of which Robert is #1. He has a ton of followers and follows many people and has the most amount of updates. If Twitter wasn't including Robert in that conversation then I have a bridge to sell you - Bwana ☠
Scoble is *only* following 2000+ here at FriendFeed. He's not following as many here as he is @ Twitter. What does that mean? - Barbara K. Baker
twitter management has not only put their proverbial foot in their mouth, but now they've swallowed it and are choking... no help for that! gees! - Susan Beebe
my2cents on the twit blame bit - Scoble is a content provider, along with others, who make twittr a destination hub for an aggregating tech community. If anything, it is a symbiotic relationship. I trailed into twitter off of Scobles blog.. if anything, twitter should consider paying some of their greater community participants. - sedgewick
Barbara - On scoble's following numbers - 1. the culture hasn't built up here, relative to twitters critical mass. 2. It's actually more difficult to subscribe to people in friendfeed. and 3. It is possible that his strategy has changed after following masses of people in twitter.... the 'noise' he loved maybe a bit different with the multitude of aggregated feeds. - sedgewick

Wow, this is slick. Thanks for the recommendation....via feedalizr - Ian Linkletter
I love AlertThingy too, ukstevieb! Though I like to try new apps (addicted to AIR). Sadly, feedalizr is great but some UI oddities appear now and again. Is alpha after all ;-)...via feedalizr - Matt Harwood
This looks pretty and all, but it's difficult to tell exactly what it does. There's not even a legible screenshot so far as I can tell. - Prunella
@Matt : that's the reason i switched back to alert thingy. - Mladen Srdić from Alert Thingy

I still prefer web - Shey, Jamaican of FF
I like it too, matt!!!! :D...via feedalizr - Adam Robertson
Prunella: sounds like you have html files set by default to open your html editor on your system. Don't think that's an issue with AlertThingy :-) - Matt Harwood
I'm not really feeling it. Might try it again after a while once they add some more functionality like collapsing comments and such. - Vaughn from Alert Thingy
very nice indeed...via feedalizr - acedanger
Giving it a try now.. I like the concept :) - Brad McCrorey
I uninstalled it already. It kept jumping to the top every time someone posted something new. I couldn't even finish reading one set of comments before I was cut off. I still prefer web as well. - David Cook
Why totally uninstall mate? It is alpha with many bugs, sure, but its general design is so much smoother than the twhirl experience (no offense to Loic :-) )...via feedalizr - Matt Harwood
doesnt alertthingy also bump stuff to top with new comments too? I wish some app would know not to do that...via feedalizr - Photo Larry
well, that was a fun hour or so with Feedalizr, before it seemed to crap out on me. I'll have to check back on it again in the future (maybe the next time AlertThingy craps out?) - Trent Olson from Alert Thingy
I had the same experience Trent Olson. Gave it up... maybe until a later alpha or even a beta. It's very slick though. - Prunella
@Matt Harwood thanks, I had considered that, however links in any other (non-browser) application have no problem activating the link in an actual browser. I'm no application developer, but it strikes me as something that can be controlled. - Prunella
Matt: "Why totally uninstall mate? It is alpha with many bugs, sure, but its general design is so much smoother than the twhirl experience (no offense to Loic :-) )..." How to Geotag Your Digital Photos - http://blog.wired.com/gadgets...
they missed using Google Earth and Geotagger on the Mac to geotag your photos. By geotagging at the file level rather than online you ensure that your geotags stay with your photos rather than get locked into any online service. Geotagger is much easier to work with for geotagging than either Flickr or Zooomr. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas: you mentioned this before and this would be great for all of us to use. Do you have a link? - Alex von Halem
Picasa will Geotag photos using Google Earth as well, very simple, add a bunch of photos to your tray in Picasa and hit Tools>Geotag>Geotag w/Google Earth and it lets you "stamp" the photos with the exact location in Google Earth. - cmiper
TH beat me to it - I like using the Geotagger/Google Earth combination as well. East and fast. Geotagging and keywording at the file level are essential - anything else is a waste of time. - Tom Harrison
