I'm torn between thinking - "that is awesome" and "what's the point?". For Scoble it makes sense as his job depends on keeping up with all this and commentating on it. For the rest of us, not so sure this realtime river of news is really where the future is taking us.

...Scoble, i am as realtime nuts as u with 65 soc news monitors therefore it irritates me that the new friendfeed doesn't allow realtime button-refresh twitter updates into the feed - or i was too stupid to find the icons. it also s*ks that u cant add all u old icons to make automatic refreshes in case there is some glitch. anyone else can help out in case scoble is busy ?

Proves once again how sorely track (realtime search alerts) is lacking. The setup as it is now is better divided between right and left eye serving corresponding brain hemispheres. The streams then should be tweaked in accordance with brain hemisphere functional/cognitive asymmetry; the result would be hyper-realtime web/personality blend leading to eventual zombiefication and madness :-)

You know since Steve was adopting a musical theme, I went looking, and I haven't found it yet. I think it's on the Love You Live album where Mick Jagger responds to some people carrying on in the audience with a dismissive even derisive "Everything okay in the critics section?" He has a picture of the Beatles, they did some great music, but RSS is more like the Stones, rough and dirty. But it rocks.

While it's pretty cool to have a 21MP camera for $2500, the amazing part is that it can record 1080p video @ 30fps. It's the only digital camera I could find that can do that, and the quality (38.6Mbps) exceeds broadcast quality.

The new FB is a fail, IMO. A lot to like in the new design, but the overwhelming clutter of combining the news feed and wall is just way too much. Poor implementation. Also while the Apps had gotten annoying and out of control, the current placement has basically killed a small industry of app development.

The usability is a vast improvement. I don't post directly to FB, instead I let FriendFeed, FeedHeads, Twitter, etc update it. I just use it for the livefeed of all my friends that still aren't on FriendFeed yet. Why isn't the LiveFeed the default tab?

Ok, after spending time with Photoshop CS3's HDR functions which only sporadically work on some images and downloading a trial version of Photomatix's HDR software, I can officially say that HDR is a huge pain in the ass and definitely not worth my time or energy anymore.

Adobe really needs to work on HDR. With a lot of tweaking you can get good results. The secret is in the conversion to 8 bit. It will never do the overly-stylized effect of Photomatix.

Even though I've seen some other people do some interesting things with HDR, all of the images that I played around with look like crap. Photomatix makes your images look like syrupy sweet and sickening cotton candy and Photoshop is just too frustrating to use when it's HDR processing only works on about 20% of my RAW files for no explainable reason. I'd expect more from software that I paid $700 for.

Photomatix made me want to throw up. I did create a few images with Photoshop converting them back down to 8bit but CS3 would choke and crap out on about 80% of my RAW files that I tried to use so I couldn't really merge to HDR with the files that I really wanted to use. At least I can now say I've officially given HDR a run and it's not for me. Regular old processing in Adobe Camera RAW beats HDR hands down.

Try doing merge to HDR > move the slider farther right than you think, making the shadows too dark. Then convert to 8bit keeping the gamma and offset too dark still. Then bring it back with Image > adjustments > Exposure

Thomas, I know what you mean. I have only done 16 HDRs in the couple of years that the fad has been out. I probably have another 20 that I have the images for I just cant get myself over the effort. I use photmatix. If only my HDRs weren't so "interesting" on flickr or I'd never do it again. I like Lucis art better but the programmer has gone dark and the new Lucis tool is going to cost $500. http://flickr.com/photos...

I think a Photoshop familiar person will likely have better results with simply manually blending multiple exposures. The HDR blend tries to "automate" something that people have been doing manually in darkrooms for ages. Multiple exposures are great for getting nice ground and sky in the same image when there is a lot of dynamic range in between.

It is possible to make HDRs that do not have that HDR "look". I prefer to use HDR as a way of getting just a bit more dynamic range. See the first two on the link http://bit.ly/38IpH2 (made with Photomatix). Photomatix (actually HDR in general) requires quite a bit of tweaking so I am not too fond of the extra time needed to process things.

the HDR feature in Photoshop really isn't worth a dime. Photomatix and a bit of understanding of why you're doing what you're doing with the tonal mapping or light recovery and you're in and out very quickly.

Thomas, Your images have to be tone mapped after they are merged, otherwise they WILL look like crap. Photoshop CS3 is not the greatest tool for HDR. Photomatix is a very good tool if you learn how to use it. Trebor, I was kind of playing around and made them have that HDR look, because I thought it looked interesting. You can do HDR images that don't look like the typical HDR. Check out Uwe Steinmueller's article above. He does many HDR images that you would be hard pressed to tell that they were HDR. It does take a lot of practice to do HDR correctly. I've seen HDR images that span the spectrum from cartoonish to completely undetectable.

HDR is certainly very time consuming and for that reason alone I can understand everyone who does not want to bother with it. But the results can look as realistic as you want. In Photomatix, a realistic look is achieved by setting all "Smoothing" controls (Light Smoothing, Highlights Smoothing, Shadows Smoothing) to high/very high values and be careful with introducing too much microcontrast.

Thanks all. Lisa, yes, I shoot 96% with prime lenses. I do have a Canon f/4 70-200 zoom that gets used sometimes, but mostly all primes. I used to shoot with zooms but I feel like I get better, sharper images with prime lenses.

JA Castillo. I tried Aperture a few years back. It didn't handle vignette processing back then so I uninstalled it. I'm sure Aperture is a perfectly fine photo editing software package but at this point I'm just more used to Adobe products and I can see no compelling reason to switch to Aperture. I'm sure Aperture is perfectly fine though and sort of view the Aperture/Adobe debate like the Canon/Nikon debate. Both are fine, depends on your preference.

In terms of Lightroom, I tried the last beta a few years back out but it was still buggy. I need to spend more time with it though as the best photo processors I know are using it. I'm hoping to spend some time learning it and plan on doing a review of the new upcoming version of it in conjunction with the upcoming version's release.

Seems like my process is quit similar except I started using LightRoom recently. What I don't understand is how you go through 500 pictures in one evening with this process. It took me about 2hrs last night to go through 50 pictures taken and 18 that I processed. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Aperture does have vignette sliders now (both gamma and exposure, gamma produces lovely vignetting imo). Check my flickr for examples, I use Aperture exclusively.

@Justin Kom: I can run through about 250 photos in a few hours in LR. It depends on what everyone means by 'processing,' I guess. A lot of them just get quick adjustments, and I end up copying and pasting adjustments a lot too, with a few tweaks after. This really speeds things up.

The Beta of Lightroom 2.0 has better vignetting control (an option to add vignette after cropping) and the software is pretty stable overall. I've been a Lightroom user since the very beginning, and I switched to 2.0 as soon as the beta came out. (I've run about 2,500 images through it with no problems.) It plays well with the other Adobe tools, so if you still want to open up in Bridge or ACR, all your settings will be shared across the applications.

I really like the LR 2.0 improvements, especially the multi-monitor support and the better vignette controls. I stay out of 2.0 most of the time, though, because: "Develop settings applied in Lightroom 2.0 beta are not guaranteed to transfer correctly to the final version of 2.0. This is particularly true for localized corrections."

Justin, I've gotten pretty good actually at processing images very quickly. I have to as I'm trying to publish 1 million photographs before I die and there's just not the time to spend too much time on any one image -- so I process fast. The jump from CS2 to CS3 was a *huge* breakthrough in my own photo processing productivity. Eventually technology should make the sole limiting factor your ability to mentally process what you want to do.

Making the leap to Lightroom probably cut my processing time in at least half. I think I've used Photoshop about 5 times since I've started using LightRoom 6 months ago! But even so, I feel like I spend just as much time (if not more) processing as taking the pictures. I agree though, some of the most amazing photographers spend WAY more time processing their photos.

I started using Lightroom about 6 weeks ago, and it has actually encouraged me to shoot more because the workflow is simpler than what I was doing before. I'm glad to hear that vignetting is going to be improved in 2.0. That's my major qualm with the software right now. There are, however, definitely instances where Photoshop is highly beneficial.

Take away - Use prime lens, compose in camera, shoot raw, process. I need to invest in some prime lenses.

LR processing - On first pass I view all photos in slide room and quickly rate 1 or 4. I delete the 1's and then view and continue to process. If I don't like a 4 on second pass it becomes a 3. Eventually I can say i am finished.

Really brilliant post Thomas thanks v much and I agree with the person who suggested that a Scoble video would help to record the mastery. I've been trying to work this stuff out for ages but never quite applied myself to it the way you have. Now I just have to use the Hawk methodology on about 10000 photos already in iPhoto....oh and learn how to take better pictures...that might be harder!

Donato, I rarely delete any RAW originals, even technically horrible shots or mistakes. These always could be converted into abstracts later on -- and then there is always the case where what seems like a throw away might later turn out to be significant. This was the case in a famous photo taken of Clinton and Lewinsky. I save everything. Storage is cheap.

@Thomas, that's always been my take on it too. I don't delete anything for the same reasons. I'd rather keep them and know that they are there if I ever need them or find a use for them, instead of just deleting them forever. I've very rarely ever said "Oh, I'll never use this." and deleted it, because you really never know.

Justin: sometimes it jumps for processor utilization reasons. Other times because of bandwidth issues. I usually download the videos to my local hard drive by subscribing to the Rss feed in iTunes.

I run into a lot of people who question the legitimacy of blogs, but I don't feel that they are any better or worse than Wikipedia or the NYT. Our parents were taught to be descriminating in their information consumption. We were taught the same thing. If "kids today" aren't learning this, then we should blame the parents (thank god I'm not one!). They are the ones ultimately responsible for how their children turn out.

But it seems like you could teach them to use it as a jumping-off point. Hell, I bet if teachers embraced Wikipedia as a tool, then students would learn to be skeptical and question the contents and do their own research, if only to annoy the teachers. Wikipedia is not considered a legitimate source by many universities, and for good reason. But I don't think Wikipedia can be blamed for kids failing or making anyone stupid. What's stupid is thinking that Wikipedia is the Oracle of all knowledge and that everything is 100% true. It's great for getting information and the vast majority of it can be trusted, but it takes a little wisdom and common sense to know that you have to use multiple, diverse sources to verify anything.

I think if your looking up the specs for an obscure WWII era submarine model, Wikipedia is excellent :) I have been disillusion by the manipulation of the system by Jimmy for use as a weapon in his own sex life and the drama that constantly rolls through the moderation group over there. It's pretty disheartening.

While volume might not be the final true indicator, I think it will become far easier to screen people based on their social stream. Writing, analysis, interpersonal relations etc. could all be gleaned from a deep dive into a social stream.

my2cents on the twit blame bit - Scoble is a content provider, along with others, who make twittr a destination hub for an aggregating tech community. If anything, it is a symbiotic relationship. I trailed into twitter off of Scobles blog.. if anything, twitter should consider paying some of their greater community participants.

Barbara - On scoble's following numbers - 1. the culture hasn't built up here, relative to twitters critical mass. 2. It's actually more difficult to subscribe to people in friendfeed. and 3. It is possible that his strategy has changed after following masses of people in twitter.... the 'noise' he loved maybe a bit different with the multitude of aggregated feeds.

they missed using Google Earth and Geotagger on the Mac to geotag your photos. By geotagging at the file level rather than online you ensure that your geotags stay with your photos rather than get locked into any online service. Geotagger is much easier to work with for geotagging than either Flickr or Zooomr.

Picasa will Geotag photos using Google Earth as well, very simple, add a bunch of photos to your tray in Picasa and hit Tools>Geotag>Geotag w/Google Earth and it lets you "stamp" the photos with the exact location in Google Earth.

TH beat me to it - I like using the Geotagger/Google Earth combination as well. East and fast. Geotagging and keywording at the file level are essential - anything else is a waste of time.
