Thomas, I'm not sure what version you are running, but the newer version (1.71.xxx) allows you to escape Piclens to to the photo, comment, fave, etc, then there is a "back to Piclens" button that will bring you right back to the stream view without skipping a beat. My only problem now is that it misbehaves with my video card at home and I get gable when exiting it until I refresh the screen. :-( - cmiper

piclens needs loads of bandwidth, too much for my "narrow" Indian "Broadband" Its not very useful either, once you get past the novelty stage. - Rahul Das

I love it to, but Thomas you are right. I wish you could fav, etc from it. I personally use the Slideshow on Flickr to flip through friends and fav. The Slideshow has keyboard short cuts. - Kreg Steppe

cmiper, thanks for pointing that out. Not sure why I was so dense to miss that. That return to piclens button actually makes it much more functional. Still wish I could cmd-click while in Piclins but I think I'll keep it after all with the return to Piclens button. - Thomas Hawk

I still use it. It gets annoying trying to play a flash video on flickr since both put the play button in exactly the same place. Love it for google image searches though. - Rodfather

The "back to Piclens" button is a definite improvement, but it would be great to be able to interact directly inside the extension. I've been saying this for awhile. Despite its annoyances and memory requirements, I still think it's the coolest way to browse photos on the web and use it almost every day. I tried the DestroyFlickr AIR app, but I didn't think it was as good. - Matt

One other suggestion: it'd be cool to be able to see EXIF data within Piclens if the photographer publishes it. Is the Piclens developer on FriendFeed? Anyone? Anyone? "Voodoo economics". - Matt

Ahhh, Cooliris actually showing up here in the conversation at FriendFeed. Very cool. I'm sticking with Piclens for a while. cmiper's tip about the return to piclens button helps quite a bit. I should have been more on top of the tool's development. One thing that I think would help even more would simply be the ability to cmd or ctl click on a photo while using piclens in Flickr and then have that Flickr page load in a Firefox tab in the background. - Thomas Hawk

This would keep your piclens session uninterrupted while allowing you to go and interact with the photos that you wanted to after your piclens session is over. Right now cmd/ctl click in Piclens does nothing and it would seem like a pretty easy thing to code and a natural way for the software to interact with a browser as cmd/ctl click almost anyplace else opens a new tab in the background while browsing. - Thomas Hawk

My old processing workflow involved using Adobe's Camera RAW in Bridge to do 95% of my work and then a remaining 5% or so in Photoshop to do spot healing, sharpening, burning and dodging etc. Now I can do all of this within Lightroom without every having to go to Photoshop. The keywording enhancements and *especially* the spot RAW processing will significantly improve my workflow. - Thomas Hawk

Jauder, I did not notice any appreciable speed improvements with this version of Lightroom. That said, this is the first version to support 64 bit processing and I think that if you have a 64 bit system that this should represent a big jump in performance. - Thomas Hawk

Thomas, Going from a 32 to a 64 bit application will have little or no impact on the speed of the application. It only allows the application to address more memory. Going to an application that can use multiple processors would show a significant speed improvement. I do not believe Lightroom was written to support multi processors. - Jeff P. Henderson

I used to use PhotoShop all the time. When LR2.0 Beta came out I decided to give it a try and have never looked back. It is by far the best processing tool I have used for images. It has improved my workflow tenfold. The presets are great, the healing and cloning brushes work well and the vignette control is fantastic. I find the speed to be pretty good. I can't wait to purchase this. I am happy to pay the price for this software. - Tom Quinn

Jeff is incorrect. 64-bit CPU processing can have an impact on performance. And it has nothing to do with multiple processors. Lots of variables, but it can impact performance -- though he's correct in that it may not matter in the case of Lightroom. - Peter Kirn via twhirl

Let me just add one comment - Adobe Online store sucks big time. I live in Bermuda, which does not have an Adobe Online store, so I tried purchasing from Adobe US Store. No dice unless I have a US Billing address. Get this - I have to call a *toll number* and try to purchase that way. I can order stuff from Amazon with a Bermuda billing address without issues. Dylan, Adobe let's you download any of their fully functional applications to try out for 30 days free. Why not try it out to see if you like it. If you do, all you do is pay on their web site for a software key and keep using it. If not you can uninstall it after the 30 days are up. Depends on your work flow, but it seems like if you are using Gimp or Photoshop now, Lightroom might just work for you also. - Jeff P. Henderson

I have three XBox 360s that I use as Media Center Extenders in my home. My Vista Media Center PC has a dual HDTV tuner and sits in the attic and feeds these three boxes in my livingroom, bedroom and kitchen. All have commercial skipping plus all my music and photos on them. My monthly cost for HDTV (network TV) = $0. Seth, My set up is hard wired through a gigabit ethernet home network. The extenders do work with wifi as well though. I watch Netflix on the XBox 360 simply by putting a DVD in it and playing it. Tim, I've been a TiVo user since the very beginning. I had a series one box and an HDTV DirecTV box. I *love* TiVo. But I prefer my Media Center / Extender set up more. Why? It does everything TiVo can do but I don't have a monthly fee to pay TiVo -- plus I like the movies/photos/TV interface better. I can also play XBox 360 games and watch DVDs on my extenders -- I can't do that with a TiVo. - Thomas Hawk

One comment about Dave Zatz's comparison article. He mentions that of the three extender units the XBox 360 unit was "noisy" while the other extenders were silent. I'd agree with that observation when comparing against first generation XBox 360s. Those fans were noisy. Microsoft replaced the fans though in the newer boxes and they are significantly quieter. - Thomas Hawk

I can't recall... Did you pick up your Xbox(es) before the Linksys extender hit the market? Would you do it again - for *every* room? I think a bare-bones extender would have given you a more efficient (and cost effective) experience within at least one or two of your rooms? - Dave Zatz

I think the TIVO is an excellent device, but being the gadget geek that I am, I prefer the HTPC setup. More power, more flexibility, no monthly fees (although we HTPCers tend to spend a lot of $$$ in the long run anyway) and better control over the content. I use SageTV's HD100 Extender which doesn't work with VMC, but does work with SageTV. One advantage of this setup is the server can run Vista, XP, WHS, Mac or Linux. Regardless of whether VMC or SageTV is used though I prefer HTPC's over TIVO. - Brent Evans

Personally, I would never trade a TiVo for a VMC-based HTPC... TiVo's scheduling and management tools are way, way better than Vista's if you're serious about your TV. OTOH, TiVo can't play x.264 in an MKV container, or manage my DVD collection. For my purposes, it's come down to having a Dish HD DVR (I loved TiVo, but it was time to move on) and a VMC box working side-by-side. - Roger Benningfield
