But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build -- a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. And that is why I will accept this award as a call to action -- a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century.

I have met with him twice in the past year. Sharp guy, very busy, he was talking with the right people, and knew the issues of the day. However, I am not sure how I feel about a defense contractor running a States network. The Northrop Grumman team seems to screen all of the ideas. Vivek Kundra and Aneesh Chopra as the top two IT advisors certainly looks like "change" to me. I hope that they will be able to take on some of the government's broken, delayed, and decrepit information systems, including those of the Feebs, the SSA, the FAA, and the IRS, in addition to everything else that they are supposed to be doing. Basically, I like the idea that Obama picked people who are hands-on with current technology, and avoided picking a high-level executive.

"VirtualBox is a family of powerful x86 virtualization products for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). See "About VirtualBox" for an introduction. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), Solaris and OpenSolaris, and OpenBSD." I use it with Vista as host & Fedora as guest, never had trouble with it. I also tried VMWare server and got tones of troubles

Hmm, VirtualBox has nothing to do with Java at all, other than the fact that they're both Sun products. If anything, it's similar to the VMware and Parallels products, and Microsoft Virtual PC.

Switched over our email and started using it for clients' email about 6 months ago and never looked back. My only gripe: can't use your Google Apps account for things that aren't on Google Apps (like Google Analytics or Google Reader). You have to create a second account for those.
- Mark Trapp
Mark, that's my main gripe too. Also, you don't get labs features when the general populace does. But otherwise a solid package.
- LogEx
I haven't experienced that. When I see people talking about a new Labs feature, I check out my Google Apps Labs, and its there. Unless you're talking about themes, which I wouldn't hold your breath for.

I would use Google FriendConnect if Facebook hadn't pulled out. They took with them a whole lot of the benefit. Shouldn't it be possible, through the Facebook API, for Google to put FB back in the mix, with or without consent? If so, would that be game, set, match?

- richrecruiter
looks cleaner but less usable to quickly scan things, due to the far lower contrast (no more blue highlight and menu background). Everything blends together on my screen. Will get used to it, i guess. The typography does not look harmonious, they ought to tweak font sizes and spacing a bit.

@Mark Bean $3 Million per child? Wow, sounds like a great plan. I wonder how much our taxes will be then! I just wish I could get a piece of that $3 Million for my son's tuition. I would have taught the kids to put down the Wii, walk outside after dark, and look up.
- Douglas Karr
from twhirl
@Douglas: better yet if it convinces 100 kids that the world isn't flat, that it is older than 10,000 years, and that we are all part and parcel of the same experience regardless of whatever crackpot creation story you believe. Kudos for Obama for not taking the bait -- we need to invest in science and education and not let things like this become talking points.
- Todd Harris
Science is part of it. The bigger one for me is foreign policy
- Deepak Singh
For me it's mostly economic. He's got the smartest economic advisors, and he seems to value intelligence, not denigrate it as has been the political norm. Science, foreign policy, and reducing the enhanced policy influence of the religious right are also big issues of mine.
- Mr. Gunn
Did you read the blog post by Scott Adams. Obama apparently described education as a top economic issue. This is a real forward thinking man.
- Aditya
Goodness knows why religion plays a part in politics in this country (USA) ... it doesnt in many other developed nations. Obama is doing a good job of not bothering with all that malarky and keeping the focus on what will actually make a difference.
- Chris Johnson
I thought that there might be a possibility that Obama wasn't religious, but instead gives the impression that he is in order to not lose votes. Then he mentioned that "sexuality is sacred" during the recent debate. That comment stood out for me, because everything else he said seemed reasonable and well thought-out.
- Paul Grav
Obama is religious. Read any of his books and it comes through loud and clear. I was surprised at just how much Christianity means to him. He keeps it personal though such that even an atheist like myself can vote for him.
- Paul M. Watson
I'm Christian, but would sooner vote for an atheist than for a Christian who indiscriminately throws the weight of law behind Biblical rules. The Bible addresses everything: what you do publicly and privately, what you say, what you think about, how you feel. Government should only concern itself with creating a maximally free and reasonably safe environment in which people make their own spiritual choices.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Bruce: I agree with you in part. If you want to see things from God's perspective of government in a pluralistic society: try Numbers 15:15-17. That said, I think a critical reading of Judges and Kings, Jeremiah and Ezekial will show you a perspective on how biblical law and government interact and what the results were.
- Melanie Reed
He is just an amazing person, he will always try his best, and he surrounds himself with the best possible people and what he doesnt know he has a great support group; the american people which he listens to
- Kyle Weller
Melanie, the early Christians did well without any legal system backing them up. In fact, I'd say when a Roman emperor finally did start backing them it was a step in the wrong direction. Numbers 15 is over according to Acts 15.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
People need to shut up about this $3-million "overhead projector" bit. First of all, yes, it was to upgrade the Adler Planetarium's projector, not a simple overhead projector. Second of all, it was never approved. http://www.factcheck.org/askfact...
- Cheryl Jones
Cheryl, it just shows the ignorance and out of touchness of the people that keep on bringing it up. People that have been to a planetarium know the benefits of this in showing our universe and the scientific need for it.
- Santa CW™
Bruce, thank you for responding but is it not written: "I will write my law upon their hearts"? As for a step in the wrong direction, if you had been living back then and been a Christian, would you have not considered it some small relief that being burned as a torch at night, fed to the lions, or crucified for simply practicing your faith had stopped because the government had stopped it? This finally happened around the time of Constantine. Men of evil inany government will cream to the top in any age.
- Melanie Reed
But that people and still Christians are persecuted for practicing their faith by governments continues to this day. Indeed, according the Associated Press just recently 7 Christians were killed for practicing their faith in Mosul.
- Melanie Reed
Franklin, there's a "Hide" link you can use if you'd don't like reading a variety of people talk about religion and politics.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Melanie, early Christians were persecuted for *not* following the *state* religion. If they had said "Caesar is Lord" they would have been left alone. Becoming the state religion was a step away from being persecuted, but also a step toward being persecutors. I would rather have no state religion.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
@Christopher Welle: Totally agree. It boggles my mind, in this age of technological advances, how little people in this country care about scientific endeavors. It's pathetic.
- Cheryl Jones
Bruce: forgive me but that is the mistake we tend to make: thinking that there can be no "state" religion. There is always such a thing because it has been put into humans the need to worship. Invariably if not directed toward God, it works itself out in horrible ways towards humanity. There will always be religion, though the form of it will always be distorted if not acceptably practiced The error is in thinking that a name taken is then fulfilled in actuality. "By their fruits you will know them".

Both Obama and McCain killed at the Al Smith Dinner. They should have done this instead of the debate last night. It would have given everyone in the country a laugh and helped us understand these two men much better than the debate did.
I actually thought McCain was funnier than Obama! Better sense of timing. Bill Maher had a good comment, though. Whenever McCain jabbed at Obama, Obama had this huge movie-star smile. in the reverse situation mcCain looked like kind of verklempt

If McCain had that type of speeches all through out his campaign, he wouldn't be so far behind.

Agreed - much better than the debate. Not living in the US I did not get all jokes referring to people I've never heard of, but I don't get to vote either so fair do's.

@Christopher Welle - he tried the Gene Simmons thing at the debate (http://friendfeed.com/e...) ... he should do comedy the rest of the campaign. If the polls are to be believed, he's got little to lose.

Really? I thught Obama looked stiff and as if he was reading a foregin script. McCain's a little more practiced at these roasts. But we all liked it because it wasn't vicious.

I agree. Obama did not do as well as McCain. McCain was funnier and Obama has some points where no one laughed and he laughed at his own jokes. This will have no effect on the election and it was kind of boring overall. The formal attire reminded me of Bush in that infamous video where he says "...I call you my base."
