crossing fingers for ya, Erica (and that situation is even potentially MORE uncomfortable though, right? Because you can sometimes see the fella online and think, hmm... should I ping him? Should I just wait for him to write? I wonder if he notices that I'm online...?)

Aren't cell phones and Blackberries and so on supposed to fix this? So you don't have to "sit by" anything, you just have to go about your entire life with a little knot of hope/fear waiting for that special ringtone/beep/buzzer.

This is very true. But emotionally, one could still be "sitting by" or at least emotionally/mentally not very present at another place or in another task.
