"Normally I would simply dismiss that sort of statement. But this lady chooses her words carefully and had to go through a lot to gain true freedom, which she is very protective of. But yeah, Internet discussion."
- Shawn Kirsch
"I find this interesting as just last week I listened to an elderly lady, who grew up in Germany during WWII, comment on how much Obama's speeches remind her of Hitler's speeches. She also noted how at the time no one in Germany thought twice about it, they all just went with it, in the same way as much of America is now. Not saying Obama has or hasn't pulled the veil over our eyes, but very interesting how someone who grew up with that has no hesitation to make that comparison."
- Shawn Kirsch
"Obviously, Car 2.0 will need to be equipped with wifi and lots of charging docks, bonus points for wireless charging. It will need a simple but sturdy dock with easily swappable ports for the different smart phones, which will all integrate seamlessly into the in dash screen. Apps like Gas Cubby and Trip Cubby will automatically record as much data as they can without your assistance, and the remaining data will be spoken, rather than typed. The security system will be nicely tied into the phone, with zoned warnings displaying the level of disturbance, so you don’t run outside for a gentle tap on the door. And of course, personalized settings. When a different driver gets in, docking their phone will automatically adjust the various controls and setting of the car to where they were the last time they drove."
- Shawn Kirsch
Never heard of it until now. Watched a video on their site. Snazzy stuff. I don't blog properly enough to warrant it though. I've already paid for Thesis and still didn't end up writing.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I'll tweak a setting just because it's there to tweak, whether I really need to or not. I usually end up undoing it, but I like seeing what will happen. I'm up for anything that makes it all faster and easier though.

The Great Google Wave invite thread. Anyone who wants an invite post your Gmail address here and anyone who has invites available please use to invite the people on this list. There are also a bunch of requests in the Invites group here: http://friendfeed.com/invites
I have a few but holding them for a few people who have already asked me. I'm at kolint [at] googlewave [dot] com btw. A pain I know but if you can, could you update your comment when you have an account or just delete your comment. Ta! :-) EDIT: Try this site for invites: http://googlewaveinvites.com/
- Kol Tregaskes
Are people on this list getting invites or at least been told they have an invite on the way? You might have to be patient, it could take a long time for one to come through.
- Kol Tregaskes
Adam, yep agree. Maybe because I did that (month ago though) helped me get mine through from Vijay so quickly!
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol, the invitation process seems to be based on nominations. For example, everytime someone nominates/invites you, you get bumped up the queue for an account until you're at the top and you get sent an invite by the team
- Ysabel Legaspi
Ysabel, ah I see, So lots of people must have nominated me. Darn, so a few users I have nominated could be waiting a looooong time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
if that voting system is right I'm very annoyed. I asked for an invite months ago, now all the numpties are all over it I'm not going to get a look in. It's like I've been sat at the front of a shop queue and everyone's just walking right past me into the shop. I am British but I detest both queuing and waiting, so this is pretty tough going
- Toby Graham
Like most other people, yesterday I wasn't aware of that I «needed» a Google Wave invitation this badly...but now I am!!! quackofdawn at gmail dot com

How does anyone know if someone has already been invited? You could go back and edit your comment when you receive an invitation, but since that takes days, it could be ages before you know.
- marziah
I've not even had a nomination, RK. At google dot com I'm suezanne , in the event anyone wants to make a nomination. I've asked before on friendfeed. It's kind of humiliating to beg.

"Very interesting. I'm also very much into the tech news, but I get most of that from Twitter. I suppose it has a lot to do with the vast majority of my friends not being the geeky type."
- Shawn Kirsch
"All the Churches I've been too (particularly here in ND) are very open to everybody. Nobody has been too concerned with who is or isn't a member. The only time membership really comes into play is as a requirement for leadership positions."
- Shawn Kirsch
Reliable coverage is extremely important to me, but the best coverage in the world won't make a bit of difference if the phone doesn't do what I want it to, and do it easily.
- Shawn Kirsch
from Bookmarklet
I used to think that way. Then I joined AT&T. I will never compromise reliable coverage again, no matter how fancy a phone is. A phone is suppose to make calls.
- Rodfather
i've had my phone for at least 3yrs now, and the one before that a good 5yrs, both by verizon, no problems, whats up?
- chaz2b
"Verizon’s extremely conservative approach to new handsets, the company’s long and rigorous testing procedures and its emphasis on the network rather than the phone has created a portfolio that’s a complete buzz kill, say experts" ahh, good business practices are not a problem, :/
- chaz2b
Rodfather, I made the decision last January to not have the phone at all. Even the Blackberrys left me wanting more. I've been getting by just fine with my iPod Touch, and Google Voice routed into Skype. Added bonus, that's $100 that I'm not spending every month.
- Shawn Kirsch
That's cool if that works for you. You can get away with just a data plan these days. A MiFi + a VoIP solution would work.
- Rodfather
I left verizon because they disabled phones native features and locked them behind paywalls, so AFAIK, this is by design.
- dthree
This is a great family, very active in their small town community, and are simply trying to do things the RIGHT way. It's sad that our government is making it so difficult to become a citizen. If they have to move back to Canada, it would be a huge loss for Elgin, ND.

One of the best dunks I've ever seen was on an And1 mixtape - an attempted layup was blocked, and another guy caught the blocked ball in midair and dunked it all in the same leap.
- Andrew C
I'm tired of it because after 2032 there won't be any funding left. :( I'd rather develop an escape plan to remove reliance now, and I'm willing to continue paying in, the rest of my life, if only to remove this originally temporary plan from my (metaphorical) children's burden.
- Jimminy
Sorry guys, you don't get a choice in the matter. It's for your own good, dontyaknow?
- Alex Scrivener
Actually, we can get out of the social security withholding, but there is A LOT of paperwork to get it done.
- Shawn Kirsch
The thing is I don't want out of withholding I want to pay, but want to slowly wean the country off of it.
- Jimminy
How about a private option for SS? Each individual could choose to put the withholding into their own personal *lockbox* :-> a 401K type diversified portfolio. Of course, who will then pay to the folks now?
- Kurt Starnes
Kurt, I think that option has actually been discussed. I think the majority of us have the ability under 30 have the ability to save for retirement if we are taught financial literacy in grammar schools, while also injecting funds into the system to support the people who were promised these funds. I feel the sacrifice, while unjust to the group mentioned above, is the only just way to handle the older group as well as our own futures.
- Jimminy
Yup, I think you've got it right. If your under 30, you have the time to create a very nice savings if invested carefully. FWIW, as of 2007, the Government says SS has unfunded liabilities of just under $6.8T (see page 8, chart VI of this PDF: http://www.fms.treas.gov/fr... ).
- Kurt Starnes
Reality is for many folks in my neighborhhod that tiny Socsec check is only income. For many people with crappy mainimum wage jobs saving is not an option and finally you have all your money drawn out 3 years after you retire don't believe the BS defined benefit beats defined contribution every time . If you are under 30 you sare fine the Boomer wave recedes and you get the benfit
- WarLord
Jobs explained it was because the Touch was aimed to be a gaming device.
- Louis Gray
Oh, sure, that makes sense. A gaming device would never need a video camera ...
- Joel Bennett
So if it has a phone, it needs a camera because everyone else has one, but if it doesn't have a phone, they can declare it a gaming device and nix it? If I need to carry a second device just for video, I'll still get a flip because I hate the lens placement on the Nano.
- Shawn Kirsch
"If he sets up automated tweeting, he isn't tweeting during the game. He could have a new tweet every minute, and the cameras would show that he isn't doing it during the game."
