I assume you're not in an auction based league by looking at your examples. What you have is even *more* important for auction based leagues. You want to be the guy with the most money *at the end* to pick up the best remaining talent on the cheap. Monday is draft day ... I must defend my championship. - AJ Kohn
AJ, you are right, this is not an auction league. It's serpentine format, and fairly standard. I won in 2001 (as a rookie) and was hooked, and won again in 2005. They're the only trophies on display in our home. - Louis Gray
You get trophies? Wow. I get money and a Superbowl BBQ. But I'd like a trophy. Though bragging rights for a year is always nice :) It's also a keeper league (5) so it took me until year three to win. D. Anderson (1), D. Garrard (1), F. Gore (25), M. Lynch (41) and A. Johnson (18). I've got 164 to burn! - AJ Kohn

what i like about the law is that totally legal for me to text while driving, yet i can't put the phone to my ear. - faboo mama
i'd just like to point out that, since the onset of this law, i've ridden at least three Los Angeles buses with drivers chattering happily into cell phones held to their ears. where was i when we finished resolving the whole drunk driving issue? because it must be resolved for this to matter so much. interesting that we managed to take care of that when our buses and trains still stop running an hour before the bars close. - idnan
Funny post! But I think CA should have gone one step further and outlawed using a cell phone altogether (talking, texting, browsing, email) while the car is in motion! As the post pointed out, people are now more distracted trying to use their phones without getting caught - Jeff P. Henderson

As a former virus analyst, the headline is killing me. A virus and a trojan are two totally different things. A virus self-replicates, while a trojan does not but does have a payload. The latter is much more common on Mac OS X, while the former is not. - Bwana McCall

Thanks Yuvi! Your analysis is awesome! I had no idea actually that 1. I shoot in Program Mode as much as I do. 2. That I use my 135 f/2 lens as much as that or that 3. I shoot at 1600 iso as much as I do. Offered up my comments on your stats and talk about why I shoot in Program Mode so much instead of Aperture Priority or Manual Mode! - Thomas Hawk
How cool - have asked for it for mine (http://www.flickr.com/photos/p...) - Phill Price
This is really helpful analysis and offers far more insight into my photos than my basic Flickr stats page. I've been meaning to do a post with some of the same information in it using Adobe's Bridge software to analyze my photos on my hard drives at home but very cool that Yuvi beat me to the analysis. :) - Thomas Hawk
Thank you so much for this post! I would've NEVER guessed you shot in Program Mode. And Yuvi, that is an awesome app. You will definitely get your laptop soon :) - Mona N.
Thomas, I posted a comment on Yuvi's entry.. but I thought I'd ask you. Do you deliberately avoid using a flash of any kind (including backfill) or have you found it isn't necessary for your photographic style? -- ok, read your article, mostly answered my question. Thanks. - Phil (scribkin)
yuvi style of analysis is really gr8.. and he's just 17 ..wait till he gets into the real world analystics and does massive number crunching at an industrial level.. his reports would be cool to read. - Peter Dawson
I think I'll do more with flash in the months ahead. I know that there are lots of creative ways to use it. It's more a matter of my comfort zone being natural light probably than anything else. - Thomas Hawk
Peter, I am worried about that, in fact. I have a feeling that we won't see much after Yuvi gets snapped up by the Microsoft or Google of the next decade and all his work becomes proprietary. And I am certain that this will happen. Not optimistic, certain. - Phil (scribkin)
@Phil, yes that is possible ..maybe he will be part of the MSR team or the Google Analystics team. However, I see that he is not just not about numbers only. I mean for Thomas images its pretty straight forward in terms XML and then digg out specifc attributes.. but if you notice his skills can be deeply used in the analysis matrix for personality types, music listening etc etc.. thats a really hard thing to map in /out.. - Peter Dawson
I generally use program mode. Once you realize that you can stop down the aperture on the 5d by turning the little vertical knob behind the shutter button, it makes aperture priority mode a lot less necessary. - Owen Byrne
FWIW, Lightroom gives you the same info. And I never got why there's so little love for program mode out there... these days, the automatic functions on a camera are a lot smarter than any photographer. Further, RAW gives some wiggle room, and it's not like I don't see the shot right away on the LCD. For that percentage of cases where the camera doesn't get it right, I drop into manual. For the most part though it's rather nice to just set it and forget it, and give my full attention to composition. - Eric
Thanks Thomas - Thanks folks! :) - Yuvi
Thanks to Yuvi for the data and thanks to Thomas for sharing/explaining this in terms that a novice can understand. I think many of us have been conditioned to think that we're not "real photographers" if we're not shooting manual. - asiriusgeek

The upcoming new version of Facebook is getting quite similar to FriendFeed. Do you think it could be a direct competitor? - LoreArtifex via Bookmarklet
Users are going to hate the fact that their combining the news feed and the wall. I know facebook really want to push the newsfeed, but I think they are going to have another user backlash on their hands. - Gabe Ragland
I'm all for combining the newsfeed and the wall, I'm tired of having to scroll past a dozen different walls to find the Facebook original wall that I want to write on, this should make it easier to find. - Shawn Kirsch
So what happens to the Wall post count now? - Joe Dawson
I like this new version of FB. I think they will put News Feed as default view inside the home, plus two other "switch view" options like the actual Wall Posts and Post by the User. The good thing is that it is very quick, few refreshes and much more Ajax. - LoreArtifex
About Facebook vs FriendFeed: this is not their goal probably. They want to manage the social graph, not interested to become a FriendFeed clone. But I think that the ability to manage all our actions, sources ad informations inside FB and to show them inside the river of news will be pretty useful. Maybe they should take Note and Link and merge them together to create a more powerful tool, just like Share Something. - LoreArtifex

This guy needs to take a look at his hardware and do some house cleaining of his OS, he's having problems that typical iTunes users don't have. - Shawn Kirsch
I feel his pain. ITunes on Windows is weak. Importing is slow, the user experience is not standard and every time I update (which is required almost monthly...) I have to make sure to remove the Apple software updater, which is always installed even though I state I don't want it and which is, in a word, crap. - Sprague D
Shawn, most Windows users don't deal with audio that's on a network volume in iTunes. iTunes handles that particularly poorly. Last I used it, I don't think any of the i/o code was threaded, so it ends to just lock up the whole ui for 10-20 seconds at a time. - Clayton O'Neill via twhirl

California to Legalize Weed for Everyone
July 1 at 9:44 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
This initiative will amend the Constitution of California to defend and safeguard the inalienable rights of the People against infringement by governments and corporations, providing for the lawful growth, sale, and possession of marijuana. Marijuana will be taxed through a system of stamps and licenses--a $5 stamp will be required for the sale of an eighth ounce of marijuana and a $50 annual license will be required for the growth of one marijuana plant. To protect participants and encourage participation in the system, such licenses and stamps will be available anonymously in stores where marijuana is sold. - Thomas Hawk via Bookmarklet
"We also hold these truths to be self-evident-That, as an intoxicant, marijuana is far less harmful to the health and safety of the People than alcohol--That, as a smoking substance, marijuana is far less addictive or harmful to the health of the People than tobacco" - Julian Baldwin
exactly why I've supported any of my friends who partake in marijuana related activity..I always tell them alcohol is far worse for the mind and body and tobacco is sad because who wants to watch someone become addicted - Julian Baldwin
and it will never happen :) - Steven Hodson
Dialing UHAUL right now (just kidding, I use Ryder) - Kathleen C
Oakland is hemorrhaging death right now from a territorial drug war that's been going on in the City for the past few years -- a tremendous amount of blood and violence. It would be nice to take pot away as one of the crops that they are dealing out on the streets and give people an alternative to fueling more gang violence. Won't make gang violence go away, but could take a major drug away from their economy. - Thomas Hawk
I'm not sure it will never happen Steven. That's what they said about gay marriage too in California and it's happening. California is a progressive state. I could see California voters getting this on the ballet and approving it. They already passed an initiative decriminalizing medicinal marijuana. This would be the next logical step. - Thomas Hawk
I read research recently that scientists are trying to extract the anti-inflammatory element of THC that interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors to help diseases like Alzheimer's without getting people high - Julian Baldwin
Thomas - agreed with your last comment. I saw that flash site recently (sorry for no link) that showed deaths on a map over a sliding time period. Very grim. - Phil (scribkin)
The big problem with legalizing marijuana is how other countries might perceive the legislation and point the pot smoker stigma towards the government - Julian Baldwin
@thomas marijuana is a low level drug compared to the alternatives that would be adopted for those earning an income selling drugs - Julian Baldwin
The federal govt will never allow it. This is unfortunate as there may be plenty of legitimate medical purposes. - Ryan
I would like to see more "Green" states. All kidding aside, I think Thomas raises some great points not only about the voters but about trying to reduce 1 of the forces driving street violence. Julian: I have been prescribed Marinol and it just doesn't do anything for my physiology (nausea, weight, etc). - Mathew A. Koeneker
LEGALIZE IT! for shits sake. Republicans support this too. Obama are you listening? - Noah David Simon
it wont happen due to quality controls and not any way to really tax it unless they implimplented more jobs for the farms. thou if they did they could also make cord from the stalks(hemp) and just think how the economy could rise from that!!! - Charles Rice via twhirl
This is amazing news! A good friend of mine is rotting away in federal prison right now for running a medical marijuana enterprise out of Oakland, something that is currently perfectly legal under state and local law. This helps to exert pressure on the feds to get them over the tipping point on this issue. Be nice to see the corrupt and morally reprehensible "drug war" end once and for all, in my lifetime! - Eddie Codel
Obama should be talking about this. He is the first major Presidential candidate who has admitted to active marijuana use. Instead he cowers away from it and won't touch the topic. - Thomas Hawk
How about biodiesel from hemp oil! - Diane Ensey
I would like to add though that this will never work because it will bring the criminal element to wherever it is legal. this needs to happen on a nationalor federal level. Perhaps that is the price we pay for making this illegal in the first place... but I just thought I should warn you. Legalize it anyway on moral grounds. I'm a Republican and I am for the legalization and normalization of marijuana. I smoked it in Amsterdam and I believe in moderation it is a good thing. - Noah David Simon
Julian, legalizing pot would not get rid of street violence in Oakland. But it would take a major income source from their economy. Even though it is a low level drug, it is one of the most heavily purchased and consumed. The impact on the drug economy would be substantial. They, of course, would do everything that they
