Mr. Gunn
What are some synonyms for researcher or academic? I'm looking for a set of terms that have an implied hierarchy kinda like neophyte, acolyte, elder but maybe not so archaic sounding?
I guess bachelor/master/doctor won't do. :-) - laura x
undergrad/grad student/postdoc/faculty/chair/dean/provost/channnncelloooor - Jenny Reiswig
serf - marthalib
indentured servant - marthalib
I thought of the undergrad/grad hierarchy and the bachelors/masters one, but I think something a little more obscure/interesting would be better. - Mr. Gunn
I'm my PI's henchwoman and the undergrad students are minions. - Ruchira S. Datta
I like henchwoman/minion but I need more terms in between. - Mr. Gunn
scholar. - Just Joe
Lackey? - Just Joe
research associate also fits in there - Hedgehog
apprentice / journeyman / master - Pete
honestly? I really like neophyte, acolyte, etc. - marthalib
I am now certain that Mr. Gunn is setting up an old school role playing game of academe where the character levels have names. - Your Neighbor Steve
padowan - Andy
Oh did you want serious answers???? - Jenny Reiswig
Certainly not. In fact, the sillier the better. Terms that people will understand, but aren't so common as to be in widespread use. LOL @ Steve - You're close. - Mr. Gunn
"Characters with a charisma less than 9 can ONLY be Mathematicians." - Your Neighbor Steve
Plugging "henchman" and "minion" into Google Sets http://labs.google.com/sets got me "satellite, supporter, cohort, partisan, disciple", none of which has quite the same feel. - Ruchira S. Datta
senior scholar, researcher, and graduate student sort of ring for me.... - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
kingpin - Ruchira S. Datta
Thanks for reminding me about Google Sets, Ruchira, that's useful. - Mr. Gunn
Steve, it's for discussion forum ranks: http://forum.mendeley.com - Mr. Gunn

Ning eliminates free accounts - Educators leave it behind?
"It wasn’t too long ago that I was promoting Ning in the educational space for as a great, free, walled-garden approach to bringing social networking to schools. Overall, it was a complete flop. When people are already completely invested in Facebook, they don’t want to have to look/check somewhere else." - AJCann from Bookmarklet
didn't spot the quotation marks on that one and thought you had gone mad 'promoting ning' LOL - Jo Badge
Now that's not likely, is it? See also: http://www.citeulike.org/user... - AJCann

"We’re excited to reveal that the Zotero project has begun preliminary development of a standalone version of the research software that will interact with browsers other than Firefox. Code has already been committed to Zotero’s open-source repository that provides a glimpse of how this new version might work. This proof of concept is allowing our developers to study how best to integrate Zotero with other popular browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Of course, Firefox is still an excellent web browser, and we’re confident that it will remain so for years to come. That said, we also want to provide the Zotero community with the opportunity to use other software when they choose to do so, or when they face institutional barriers to using Firefox." - AJCann from Bookmarklet

Workshop - Uses of Twitter in Higher Education and its potential in other sectors - http://www.alt.ac.uk/worksho...
This workshop in Nottingham will provide an introduction to Twitter and its potential uses in HE and the other sectors. The first part of the workshop is organised in two strands: strand A for those who are new to Twitter and who have yet to create or use an account; strand B for those who have a Twitter account and who would like to extend their understanding of its possible uses. - AJCann from Bookmarklet

Ning’s Bubble Bursts: No More Free Networks, Cuts 40% Of Staff
"One month after long-time Ning CEO Gina Bianchini was replaced by COO Jason Rosenthal, the company is making some major changes: It has just announced that it is killing off its free product, forcing existing free networks to either make the change to premium accounts or migrate their networks elsewhere. Rosenthal has also just announced that the company has cut nearly 70 people — over 40% of its staff." - AJCann from Bookmarklet
Blimey. At last. A prediction comes true....: "During the coming slump the risk of relying on free tools and services in learning will become apparent as small start-ups offering such services fail, and as big suppliers switch off loss-making services or start charging for them." - see http://tinyurl.com/8y2qfs - Seb Schmoller

Okay DR's, I've a question for you all. I'm doing some posters for a big biennial conference in the US. The sort that demands a postal address and fax details on the poster, but only suggests you include an email address. Do I put my digital details on there somewhere? And if so, where?
I'd suggest you include the social media account you use most, be that Twitter, Friendfeed or whatever, to allow people to contact you. It's a good idea to set up a profile page somewhere online which you can use to aggregate all your contact details. - AJCann
