Fwd: #scio10 open notebook science session w/ Cameron and Jean-Claude tomorrow ... anyone want me to talk about anything specific? (via http://friendfeed.com/steveko...)
Would be great to hear about workflows in ONS. Btw I'm not going to be in room so pls encourage lots of tweets :) - Dan Hagon
Good idea, Dorothea, I can talk about that (basic answer is most colleagues at my institution aren't aware of it, or don't get it, but there's no backlash. Positive feedback from department chair, especially using ONS in undergraduate lab course. A few people have been tempted to do ONS, but are only using private wiki for now) - Steve Koch
Workflow is not nearly as good as I'd like it, Dan. I think I'll show what we do (use OpenwetWare) and perhaps mention a few of my dream tools that would make our ONS easier and better. - Steve Koch
Ideas from talking with Cameron & Jean-Claude: generally: it will be good to describe success stories so far. Jean-Claude reminded me of the extremely positive view of ONS from the NSF review panel of my (declined) CAREER proposal. I'll show some of those comments from the panel. - Steve Koch
I think I should also briefly describe our lab's path to ONS--over roughly two years, going from private wiki to ONS. - Steve Koch
Lots of positives to talk about: (1) meeting all of the people on friendfeed, because of ONS; (2) killer broader impacts ratings from NSF panel; (3) meeting potential collaborators; (4) ONS in Junior Lab -- students continue to use, one star student highlighting it in his grad school application; two film students making an open science video about it; (5) much easier to interact with my students (though private wiki is same) (6) other people are mentoring my students, sometimes even via the wiki, more often via friendfeed (7) ThorLabs sent Andy a bunch of free food :) ... - Steve Koch
Hey Dorothea -- unfortunately, missed your session today, so not sure exactly how loaded :) - Steve Koch
Here're slides I'll probably use: http://www.slideshare.net/skoch3... - Steve Koch
