Flattr offered me invites to pass on to science bloggers, to overcome the chicken and egg problem observed by Lars J. Jensen. Anyone interested in adding Flattr to their blog?
if you haven't heard yet, it's a micro-payment system for donations to blogs etc. Some German political and technical blogs have seen monthly payouts of ~1000 EUR. http://flattr.com

(I'm not affiliated with them, and haven't added Flattr to my blog yet, but I have donated to a few sites I like) EDIT: just added a button to my blog.
- Michael Kuhn
I already have an account and would be happy to add the button to my blog. However, to do so, I have to have an active Flattr account, which means spending at least EUR 2 per month on Flattr, which I would be more than happy to do, if I was able to donate that money to the people who run the blogs that I like. But I cannot because none of them have a Flattr button on their blog (which may well be for the very same reason that I don't have it on my blog).
- Lars Juhl Jensen
The only way I see around that problem is an coordinated effort, namely that several bloggers in the field agree to all put Flattr buttons on their blogs at the same time to get it started.
- Lars Juhl Jensen
I just activated it ... I like the concept and will give it a go. If I do not like it I will stop again https://flattr.com/thing... ... Besides there are more than just blogs indexed, also software and other more general sites.
- joergkurtwegner
I'd be happy to give it a go. Might go some way towards covering hosting costs...
- Cameron Neylon
@Cameron: I mailed you an invite code.
- Michael Kuhn
I'm interested in trying it too. I'd love to send some appreciation to great posts and software. Would also love to cover some hosting costs...
- Catherine Anderson
I have three invites, too, just let me know if you are interested.
- joergkurtwegner
Can I have an invite too? BTW, how is Flattr income classified from tax laws point of view? As a donation?
- Pawel Szczesny
@pawel - can you send your eMail to me@joergkurtwegner.eu ? Please do not use FriendFeed's direct messages they are shown in RSS feeds and are *not* private.
- joergkurtwegner
Joerg, direct msgs not private? How cool, FF turning into FB... Email sent. Thank you.
- Pawel Szczesny
@Pawel - Invite code is on the way ... and no FF is not private ... I had a while ago a discussion with Daniel Mietchen and we exchanged mobile numbers ... which later showed up on my public RSS integration ... this is not nice ... and luckily Daniel has seen it, so I deleted the threads and cleaned my feed integration ...
- joergkurtwegner
I'd like an invite if there are any left, thanks! devjen at berkeley dot edu
- Devon Jensen
I have now also activated my Flattr account and added buttons. It will be interesting to see if we can make it take off within the community :-)
- Lars Juhl Jensen
@Joerg: Perhaps the DM showed up in your *private* RSS feed, but not in the public one?
- Michael Kuhn
@Michael, I am not sure about this, since I simply used http://friendfeed.com/myusern... as RSS feed and the web-server of my site does not host any login information, so it does not know what 'private' and 'public' is, but should just use the 'public' RSS I would assume (which was not the case).
- joergkurtwegner
Ok - signed up and starting to get this working. Playing with the Wordpress plugin at the moment.
- Cameron Neylon
Egon, I can send you one if you haven't got one already...(which if the login is down seems likely)
- Cameron Neylon
seems like invite codes are not necessary anymore, anyone can register now
- Michael Kuhn
Who is using this on a post-by-post basis? That is, Cameron's blog uses it at the blog level, not at the individual blog post leve, right?
- Egon Willighagen
Yeh, I couldn't quite work out a good way of doing it at post level. Or rather dropping it in at the bottom seemed counterproductive. I haven't yet seen a good way of putting it into an RSS feed. I used the Wordpress RSS feed plugin but it just inserts a link to the Flattr site not to a page corresponding to either me or the post...
- Cameron Neylon
Skimming off 10% seems a bit exorbitant.
- Noel O'Boyle
@Noel... indeed... that's some interest they are asking... is that amount capped? that is, that the skim at most 10 SEK if your monthly contribution increases? Otherwise, I really like the idea...
- Egon Willighagen
According to the internets, they'll try and bring it down over time. Am I right in saying that you need a Paypal account to make this happen? If so, I can't do it.
- Noel O'Boyle
Nope doesn't need paypal. I did a direct credit card payment
- Cameron Neylon
from Android
Ok - out of excuses. On the off chance that this will change the world into a gift economy...
- Noel O'Boyle
I think this will my next attempt after a Google Adsense fail... my blog is too boring for the large ad-clicking public...
