Stefana Broadbent: How the Internet enables intimacy | Video on TED.com
We worry that IM, texting, Facebook are spoiling human intimacy, but Stefana Broadbent's research shows how communication tech is capable of cultivating deeper relationships, bringing love across barriers like distance and workplace rules. - Praveen Vasudev

Friendly Security Reminder: If you got a Droid, remember to shred the paper you wrote your Gmail address & password on for the tech rep. I just found mine and fed it to my Fellowes.
fellowes-shredder-0208[1].jpg
Yep. That's what I did when I purchased my G1 last year. - imabonehead
Wait, what? Buying an Android phone from a carrier's store requires you to compromise your Google identity and all information that flows in and out of it by forking over your Gmail password to a rep? - David Chartier from iPhone
You can't get the phone without a Gmail account, and the tech reps are the only ones who can enter that info for you. I thought it was odd too, but if you see Ima's comment apparently T-mobile does it too. TBH I was horrified at the idea, but the rep told me he'd return the paper (which he did). Kinda unnerving though - LANjackal from IM
But I mean think of how many times you hand over your SSN (at the doctor, to your carrier/utility provider, etc.) and you never get the paper back. Nothing to freak out about, just make sure you destroy the paper so you don't have your login credentials floating around out there by accident. - LANjackal
So, no biggie, just go home and change your password after you get your phone. - Jeff P. Henderson
To elaborate more on my experience, when I bought my G1, I specifically requested to type in my own gmail account and SSN on their keyboard. I purchased mine at a local Costco. I did have to write down my personal information on a piece of paper. I took it home and shredded it. - imabonehead
I think the reason they're doing it is for expedience. If they allowed everyone to manually enter their own info (bear in mind the average user with a new device) the whole setup process would take forever and picking up a Droid would take several hours on launch. - LANjackal
The saleslady who sold me my G1 was very understanding. I don't know if other sales paople would do the same. - imabonehead
I typed my password into the phone myself when they setup the first account for me. No way I'm giving some sales guy my password. - Jason Huebel
It seems a bit wrong that they don't get you to type your own password. Security #FAIL . - Andrew Perry

RUMOR: Apple Creating iPhone for Verizon to Come Out in 2010 | Macgasm

According to the Money Times, here are the rumored iPhone specs: Handset set to release in 2010 will have a smaller screen 2.8-inches, way smaller than the current iPhone’s 3.5-inch display Place calls over Wi-Fi Display photos Play music as well as high-definition video" - Shevonne from Bookmarklet
A GSM/UMTS/CDMA worldphone is an easy product for Apple to green light, given the projected sales volume. - Bill Sodeman

Factron iPhone case is a pretty unique metallic jacket for your iPhone. Once your iPhone has been wrapped with the Factron case, you can also stick a lens at the back of where the camera is. By that you can also interchange a variety of lenses to suit different shootings that you want. - Praveen Vasudev from Bookmarklet

YouTube, Last.fm mashup is pretty good, very illegal
"YouScrobble takes elements of Last.fm and Youtube and wraps them up in a neat package. What a shame that it’s almost certainly illegal." - Martin Bryant from Bookmarklet
Nice use of their APIs. The download issue is kind of silly considering the quality of songs on YT aren't the best + there are many other tools that do the same thing. It'll be an easy target to attack with litigation though. - Maxamad (Amazigh)
Yeah, they should concentrate on the discovery aspect for sure. - Martin Bryant from iPhone
I wouldn't utilize the download feature anyway. - © b e e n s w a n k

What a Droid looks like when mounted in Windows (Vista SP2)
Droid.jpg
so you don't need another software like iPhone needsiTunes to interface? - brainno722 (Peter)
Nope - LANjackal from IM
The same ease of use on the Mac too. The SD card just shows up as a mounted disk. - Jason Huebel from Android
this is cool! one more question...do you have to find android specific app to install to use or does it work with win os (or linux) apps? like firefox or pdf viewer or openoffice... - brainno722 (Peter)
I'm not really understanding that question ... since it shows up as an external drive, it functions as one and is accessible from any program on your PC just like any other drive ... - LANjackal
@Peter, it looks just like you plugged a USB stick in. So anything you could normally do with a plain Jane memory stick you can do with this. - Jason Huebel from Android
Because dragging and dropping files back and forth like we used to in 2001, instead of using modern dynamic media databases and smart playlists, is so awesome. - David Chartier from iPhone
@David: Because NOT being limited to any particular syncing app is so awesome. I MUCH prefer devices that mount as simple storage to those that are tied to a particular syncing client. The former is simply a LOT more flexible because you're not tied to any particular transfer method. You can always use a 3rd party syncing app with a common storage device, but if the device requires its own syncing app then you're locked into that - LANjackal
Damn, I wish dealing with my WinMo devices was as simple. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
@David: I have yet to come across a default OEM syncing app that I like. I'm glad none ships with the Droid. Also, the Droid automatically finds any music you drop into it regardless of where you drop it, so ... *shrugs* - LANjackal
@Chris: As much as I'd like to say wait for WinMo 7, MS' track record leads me to believe they'll make the same sync client mistake with that too - LANjackal
You kidding? Hell, the way they seem to be drooling at the iPhone market, Microsoft probably wants to lock things down even more than they already are. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Well TBH it *might* not be that bad. I've noticed that many devices that ship with WMP sync capability (no download/installation necessary) can also be mounted as simple storage in Windows (see Archos devices as an example). - LANjackal
The only way MS has a chance against the iPhone (or Android, for that matter) would be if they completely rewrote Windows Mobile. It's a dinosaur. - Jason Huebel
That's what's happening for v7, actually ... - LANjackal from IM
Good. - Jason Huebel
Not really, Win7 is still based on CE, but the WinMo components are getting a total do-over. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
So, same old pig, just putting some lipstick on it. - Jason Huebel
Not quite. That's like saying Windows 7 is the same as Windows NT just because the former descended from the latter. - LANjackal
Actually, it's more like saying that Ubuntu 9.10 is the same as Slackware v1. Same basic kernel at the bottom, but newer versions, and much different at higher levels. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
My Motorola RAZR did this years ago. - Johnny Worthington from iPhone
I didn't say it was a new feature, haha - LANjackal from IM
i wonder if it works with doubleTwist yet? - Chris Heath
No clue - LANjackal
it might 'just work' if it shows up just like any other drive ... doubleTwist is cool - Chris Heath

Apple approves a “Hitler Book” app with Nazi Symbol as its logo. How did no one catch this?
Ok, Apple is srsly fucked up now. Vijay? - Maxamad (Amazigh)
So are you guys for or against censorship from Apple? I can't justify *not* making a book available to people. And seriously "swach sticker?" - Dustin Sallings
Apple remove now! - Ned Garcia-Mathews
And yet, no Google Voice app. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from iPod
MVB nails it. They allow this app, yet another book app with the word iPhone in it is not allowed. A Google Voice app is not allowed. These are the kind of things that make me think Apple is messed up. - Maxamad (Amazigh)
Maxamad, I totally agree an inconsistent censorship policy is bad. Any censorship policy is bad. Banning books -- even those nobody agrees with is bad. That's the irony here: http://wiki.answers.com/Q... - Dustin Sallings
NO way! can we boycott that app?! damn Apples is messed up!! - Susan Beebe
Susanbeebe, absolutely! Don't buy it, don't publicize it (this thread probably sold more copies than would've otherwise been sold). Don't make it sound like super-powerful forbidden knowledge that will give someone power that everyone else should fear because the reader will magically transform into the next Hitler and kill us all. Most importantly, let's not encourage organizations to hide information from us that some of us disagree with. - Dustin Sallings

If hype were to be believed, the Motorola DROID is the pièce de résistance of the mobile world; the conclusive creation sent down by the Great Smartphone in the sky to rid us of our woes. It would prepare your breakfast promptly each morning, tuck you in at night, and, maybe — just maybe — knock the iPhone down a notch or two. - Praveen Vasudev from Bookmarklet

iPhone Coming to Verizon in 2010 [RUMOR] - http://mashable.com/2009...

"Google is trying not to be creepy. That's according to CEO Eric Schmidt, who told Fox Business Thursday that "we're trying not to cross what we call the creepy line" when it comes to the data it gathers. As an example, Schmidt said Google only publishes satellite data that is a month old, indicating that Google would consider it creepy to publish real-time satellite data. Google is quite used to facing charges that it has become a little too Big Brotherish in its conquest of the Internet search market. In response, it emphasizes that Google users have control over the data the company collects on them, most recently introducing Google Dashboard as a way of letting users see all the personal data the company has assembled in a single Web page. That will likely never be enough to satisfy the hardcore privacy advocates of the world, but the general public--and the government--are also starting to get a little uneasy about Google's unparalleled reach across the Internet.
