I deleted my status, and it'll likely remain hidden from this point forward. Some people aren't as... tactful.

I'm a gal and I only changed my facebook status to reflect my long-term relationship at the 6 month point. And I only did /that/ because every time my dad would email me or call me he'd always ask, "So are you still dating The Boyfriend?" and I got tired of answering. Now whenever he has the urge to ask the question, he can go find out his own self. Which, I believe, was the original point of the status thing.
