"The elbow positioning could possibly be explained if he'd had a stick - lifting an arm to pull the blade in close as he neared the boards. Without that though, he may as well have thrown a knee check. He was in the wrong position, without a stick, and reacted improperly - endangering another player. We all know extremities will go flying along the boards, but not with open ice speed. Five games will likely be enough to help prevent this sort of thing. It's comparable to the Rick Tocchet knee checking suspensions."
- Jay Wiegmann
"He's the senator from Alabama, not Illinois. Corruption jokes belong to Illinois while incest, hick, and redneck jokes belong to Alabama. Geography education in this country has apparently gotten worse than I thought."
- Jay Wiegmann
"This was one moonbat answer to an idiot question. If Sen. Shelby wanted to actually communicate his financial message (since he's voted against the various bailout bills whenever presented and all), he COMPLETELY lost all credibility by even responding to an idiot question regarding the president's citizenship."
- Jay Wiegmann
"The definition of rationing used here (contrary to the normal definition where access to a commodity is limited by legislation) is irrelevant. Is healthcare provided for those who pay for it? Yes. Is healthcare legally prohibited to those without the money to pay for it? No. There is no rationing. Is the next right cable TV? Not everyone can afford that, and those that cannot don't have it. Surely those who cannot pay MUST have the same 500 channels of noise as those who can. Right this injustice today! Universal Cable TV MUST be made law! No, the absence of cable television will not result in death or other injury, so the scale is different. The principle is the same though."
- Jay Wiegmann
I just realized what an idiot Ron Paul is from this
- Jesse Stay
I still disagree with his gold standard thoughts, but otherwise, he's right on this one.
- Jay Wiegmann
Right on? He just said we've been in this situation many times before. He's an idiot - this nation has *never* lost so much in one day on the stock market in its entire history. Also, "500 or 600" - we lost near 800 points! Does he even realize that?
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
And this is one of the guys we voted to be able to vote on such a crucial bill.
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
"What we need is more freedom, not more government." hmmmm... interesting perspective. @Jesse: What makes you say that?
- Mona Nomura
A lot of his viewpoints are reflective of the constituents he represents in TX. Outside of that, and the gold standard he harps on, he's very much right on. Adding to my stream...
- Helen Sventitsky
Mona, I'm just quoting Ron Paul in the video. He says this happens all the time. He has no clue and is completely wrong in that fact.
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
Except for his stand for a wholly gold standard, Paul's one of the few remaining true believers from "the Chicago school of economics". We need more of them.
- Jay Wiegmann
As i said earlier, let's just crown him freakin' King and move on!
- Internet's Tad
I wish he'd gotten the GOP ballot... I would have voted for him... Just the satisfaction of getting rid of the IRS would have been worth it.
- Lindsay
I'm still voting for him, Lindsay. I've *ALWAYS* believed he was the only serious candidate.
- l0ckergn0me
You are supporting a person who has no, none, zip, zero chance of ever becoming president and we are the ones who are out of the loop? Stop smoking the Seattle green, Chris.
- Alex Scoble
I don't care for being called a fool but I am glad he is standing up and saying what needs to be said. He is completely correct on free markets and government meddling. He doesn't stand a chance of winning and I'll gladly vote for McCain.
- Keith - @tsudo
Is your goal to be right and rub our noses in it... or fix the problem?
- Brian Roy
I wish he'd have accepted Bob Barr's offer to be VP (I don't know that he's rejected either now that I think of it).
- Jay Wiegmann
“Alex - I'd rather vote my beliefs than vote for the person I believe has a chance of winning. What does that say about *ME*, sir?”
- l0ckergn0me
Brian - my goal is to speak my mind, and believe that I'm right. If I happen to be able to do both simultaneously, I'm even more happy. It's too late to shove the shit back in the horse, and "fixing the problem" is going to take longer than I think Americans are anticipating.
- l0ckergn0me
I like most of what Ron Paul stood for, but unfortunately he is too fringe for enough people to listen. Maybe with dramatic events somebody like him will be a viable choice going forward.
- TDavid
It says you are smoking crack and need to get yourself to the Betty Ford clinic. Voting for him is like an accountant playing the lottery. It...just...doesn't...make...sense.
- Alex Scoble
I've been back on Firefox for more than a week. Didn't flip the "be my default browser" switch, and when I clicked on a link, Firefox opened, and that's been that ever since. And yeah, FFox has crashed a few times in between, and I just muscle-memory-reached for the FFox icon on my desktop, purely out of habit. Hrm...
- abacab
still using Chrome and quite happily so
- Steven Hodson
I'm on Linux so I'm stuck on Chromium. Still waiting for the add-ons, but Firefox is still my default browser. I just thought it was interesting to see the mob mentality on this after the dust has settled, somewhat.
- Helen Sventitsky
I am quite happy about Chrome right now,but I hate to go to Firefox everytime when I only need to watch some video on Youtube, because flash doesn't work well in Chrome.
- Steve Chou
Don't get me wrong, if FFox crashes again (and it will), and I happen to catch myself and open Chrome instead of default-opening FFox, it will again be a week without FFox instead. I'm still very much in the "all browsers suck" camp.
- abacab
I'm really liking Chromium, I just need to figure out how I broke flash.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Flash's still my issue... but it is my default browser for 2 weeks now that I'm on bookmarklets + greasemetal. I recommend Shiretoko Alpha 2 for all one-legged FF users... light, on my USB drive, addons are beginning to be compatible. (as I'm saying for some time, ubiquity/scribefire/noscript and I'm in heaven)
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
Used Chrome for a couple of days, then I got tired of the sad tabs.
- Amber, Random Time Lord
Still using Chrome right now and I won't go back to Firefox...
- Steve Chou
Still really love Chrome, in general. It's so much faster for me than FireFox. However, I'm still having flash issues, so if I want to watch a video (which for me is rare), I use firefox.
- Jen (SquirrelGirl)
While Chrome still isn't my default, it's certainly taken Firefox's #2 slot very quickly. There's just not much to make me stop using Opera, but anything's possible in an infinite world.

I took John MCain's acceptance speech from last night's Republican convention and compared it to Barack Obama's acceptance speech from the Democratic convention and made wordles of each. John McCain's wordle is on top, Barack Obama's is on bottom. Best viewed large here.

What worries me is that the word 'freedom' isn't big enough to see in either one.
- Jay Wiegmann
I thought the word I and me would show more prominently in McCain's wordle. Fight is clearly visible.
- Russellreno
interesting to see a few prominent word differences. McCain: fight, government, world, make. Obama: promise, time, new. Also interesting, in keeping the Palin-Biden wordle comparisons, that the Democrats mention McCain a lot in their speeches by name but the Republican's rarely mention Obama by name at all. Both seem to mention country, America, and Americans alot.
- Thomas Hawk
I could tell who's Wordle was who's as soon as I looked at it.
- cecily
Obama is into McCain, but McCain is into Americans and the Country. hmm. Obama has America and American very large, but Americans is small? It just seems to me like Obama wants to tear us apart and McCain wants to fight for America. I know who Americans will vote for... not the guy who obviously hates them
- Noah David Simon
I think it is interesting how prominent the word "promise" is in the Obama one. Is he doing a lot of criticizing of other's promises or is he making a lot of his own?
- Kenton
@Kenton: Neither really. The usage was more in line with " indication of future excellence or achievement"
- AJ Kohn
excellence in tearing the other guy apart because he wants to fight for America? no thanks Obama
- Noah David Simon
looks like McCain doesn't make promises he can't keep
- Zach Chisholm
Fight for *some* of America it seems. And not fight and win at all costs in Iraq and hey, step off Iran and Russia we got some for you too. No thanks. I'll fight to get our economy back (which is directly related to the war), and eduction, and health care and equal rights. Oh, I'll fight alright.
- AJ Kohn
As an "Opera first, FF 2nd" person, I don't use many add ons at all, so it's less of an issue for me.
- Jay Wiegmann
I'll live for now. =) I won't use Chrome exclusively tho of course I'll be back & forth to Firefox.
- ChaCha Fance
I'm not quite ready yet to jump the Firefox ship. Chrome is a great browser from what I've seen so far, faster than Firefox and much less of a memory hog, but I need my extensions, particularly Firebug and Greasemonkey.
- Ray Metzen
Just saw it too. Downloading... I don't think tabs on top is a good idea. It looks kinda cool but doesn't make sense that it's farther from the page since tabs are second in importance behind the page content for my browsing. I like the address bar also being the search. I wish FF3 had done that.
- ·[▪_▪]·
is it as fast as you thought? OMG NO FAIR
- Mona Nomura
+1 Nicerobot. Flouts a lot of Windows Conventions, but atleast 'looks' like a Windows App, unlike Safari.
- Yuvi
Who cares about the UI, is it as fast as everyone says? And I want to see the task bar, will someone Screen Cap it, please??
- Mona Nomura
I'm jealous too... I can't get it to install. :(
- Lindsay
it certainly seems faster than firefox. And its only using 80MB of memory! Firefox would be 150+ by now!
- Rahul Das
You guys can DL it up there! ughhhhhhhhhhh
- Mona Nomura
Why do i have to close firefox to import settings into chrome?! Sorry, no!
- ·[▪_▪]·
bugs! Its having trouble marking messages as read in gmail!
- Rahul Das
It uses the OSes network settings so shares it with IE. I prefer FF3's so that each browser can have different settings.
- ·[▪_▪]·
OMG SCREEN SHOTS, PLEASE... this is like, terrible LOL
- Mona Nomura
So I'm not the only one who thinks it feels faster than Firefox. I'm not 100% sure that it is faster but it feels snappier. So far it's nothing spectacularly different but little things like the pop-up status bar and emphasizing the domain name portion of the URL is nifty.
- ronin
I love how Google takes notice of the 'little things'
- Mona Nomura
I will wait till all the dust settles and all fuss goes away. Then I will download and test it - tomorrow at work perhaps !!
- Hayk H.
It definitely is faster than Firefox . . . well my firefox anyway.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
so far i've had it open for five minutes.. and its pretty fast.
- CW™
My FireFox3 SUCKS ASS, have you kept up with my ongoing woes since I upgraded?
- Mona Nomura
To me, it is not noticeably faster than FF3 for browsing and page rendering but it starts up instantly. It's actually incredible how fast it starts.
- ·[▪_▪]·
You guys, I am living VICARIOUSLY through your comments :(
- Mona Nomura
It does NOT look like Windows. It looks like a vista window and i run XP using classic UI so it looks completely out of place. They're drawing the entire window instead of using the OS. It looks to be a direct attack on IE. It'll feel very comfortable to anyone that uses IE.
- ·[▪_▪]·
whoa.. and it toasts bread just right too!
- nouhad
Which bit of chrome do you want a screen cap of?
- Andy Davies
I'd like to see some rendering benchmarks. I've been comparing lots of sites and rendering seems fairly consistent between FF3 and Chrome (note: my FF3 on windows doesn't suck like it does on Mac).

The "Stats for nerds" :( Nicerobot: :( I AM SO JEALOUS

Not impressed with the download manager so far. I think I accidentally canceled a download by double-clicking on it.
- Vincent X
Fails Acid3. Probably due to webkit. My opinion: it's just another browser. There's nothing here that makes it a killer. I haven't proven if it can replace IE but i doubt it. It will not replace FF3 for me unless it adds support for FF add-ons since I can't browse without passwordmarker. I doubt they'll beat safari speeds on Mac. I love google but I no need for this.

I had *and* have this game again. Got this for Christmas as a kid - the night before I was hearing strange noises (are UFOs coming and landing on the lawn?) and went to parent's room to make sure everything was okay. Fired this up the next day and the lightbulb went off. Maybe that's when I knew Santa wasn't real?
- AJ Kohn
I had many variations of handheld electronic games as a kid, but Bambino basketball (http://www.davesvideoarcade.co.uk/tableto...) and an Amidar handheld were among my faves. I had a crappy Pacman watch as a kid, too, with a little joystick nub that I was always losing.
- abacab
I was an Electronic Quarterback player myself (and somehow still have mine), but for anyone who grew up with these - sit down and play it ASAP. There's almost no way to get this much childhood joy from a simple game.
- Jay Wiegmann
I had a ton of electronic games from that time period, all lost now. Although for my bday a couple years ago, my wife scored me one of these from eBay: http://www.fredsociety.com/fabulou... That was the first toy/game I bought for myself, with money I was given for my 11th birthday.

- Kol Tregaskes
@Stupid Blogger I've got the same habit. Had to warn a previous co-worker (who was British) so he wouldn't stomp my face in. Thought I could control it when a few off-shore Indian people came. Well, I couldn't.

Around 58seconds: " So, the fact is -- so the fact is that I have the qualifications and the knowledge and the background and the judgment. I don't need any on-the-job training. - Mona Nomura
from Bookmarklet
really, McC? i had the honor of serving the USA for a bit, too; only four years, though. maybe i could be a mayor ... ? surely that at least qualifies me for some council seat somewhere. i mean, i'm MARKSMAN QUALIFIED on, like, MULTIPLE weapons. and i have MEDALS. c'mon, you have to vote for medals, right? sheesh.
- idnan
IMHO, he bases all of his know-how on his experience in the military. Um, why does that scare me? And am I goign to have to start saluting? @idnan: Case in point LOL!
- Mona Nomura
He isn't using his credentials to get your votes. He's using them to get the vote of people that are afraid and think war is the only response.
- ·[▪_▪]·
it speaks to me as a sort of common ground i share with McC which i may not otherwise be able to find as a minority of several degrees from a background of somewhat less than financial comfort. i can see how he might mean it as an indicator of patriotism, dedication, durability, even general badassery. but, seriously, as a qualification for running the economy, or some of the other arguments ... sorry, Cap, but you're not fooling me. war hasn't changed so much from yours to mine; try again.
- idnan
but to be fair, Obama is a little "=|" to me too. i mean he's a constitutional lawyer by training, which i've been learning in times recent is universally associated with severe quixotic weirdness and tunnel vision.... or myopia to say the least... he disregards (or discounts?) the seriousness of genocide, fails to comprehend oil geopolitics, casually talks of invading a nuclear capable ally (pakistan)...
- Mona Nomura
I'm reminded of his spokesman's response to the "how many houses" BS - "This is a guy who lived in *one* house for five and a half years -- in prison.".. What?? At what point does this become like Giuliani's 9-11? I find it sad McCain and his people are overusing this awful experience to the point that it's become totally cheapened. Also: +1 nicerobot
- Anthony Citrano
@Mona - please don't repeat falseness and give it life. Obama never, never, ever spoke of invading Pakistan. Let alone "casually."
- Anthony Citrano
At Bits core, uniformed service demonstrates the ability to put the needs of the US above those of self. If that can translate into running an economy, fine. We're not supposed to have a planned economy though, so the correct answer is "I decide who gets my money just like every other American and I pledge not to interfere with their ability to do so in the future." McCain didn't give that answer though (possibly because he doesn't feel that way).
- Jay Wiegmann
Jay: Definitely agreed. @Anthony: IMHO, both of the candidates are weak, this election. What it comes down to, is, who we want representing our country and both their stances on Supreme Court Justices, since ultimately the higher court holds the power.
- Mona Nomura
Obama said he would pursue al-Qaeda into Pakistan if they did not go after them on their own, and that is nowhere near an invasion. And Pakistan as an ally? No so much.
- William Harryman
There are ways to chase Al Queda into Pakistan without an Iraq scale invasion of the country.
- Internet's Tad
He stated that if the Pakistani government were unwilling to cooperate, he will go in, which basically translates (not to me) as if he's disrespecting and disregarding the wishes of Pakistan, hence, invasion. (Don't shoot the messenger!!) My point is, Obama's intentions are blatant to Americans, but IMHO he should be more diplomatic when dealing with international relations. Pakistan is an enemy we keep close as an 'ally', but to me it's all political rhetoric.
- Mona Nomura
Mona - a Google search does not a truth make. What you said is false. He did not "speak casually about invading Pakistan." What he said - specifically - is that he would go after Al Qaeda cells wherever they were hiding. You know, sorta like we should have done six or seven years ago.
- Anthony Citrano
This was back in the primaries, where he was loosely talking. Now, he's honed his speech a tad ;) Progress. And PLEASE do not get it twisted. I am in NO WAY comparing him to Dubya. My fault, for making it sound that way.
- Mona Nomura
I also completely disagree that "ultimately" the Supreme Court holds the power. An important component, sure. But (properly run) Congress and the Executive hold a tremendous amount of power as well. And if you think they're "weak this election" I'd be very interested to hear the last time you thought they were strong.
- Anthony Citrano
"a tremendous amount of power as well" Correct! The three branches were designed to be equal.
- ·[▪_▪]·
Anthony, when was the last time this country was bipartisan? With lobbying heavily involved, a properly run Congress is near impossible. And the last time I thought the election was strong? Back in the Clinton years lol
- Mona Nomura
But Mona, you falsely characterized what he said. Attacking terrorist cells in another nation does not an invasion make - not technically, not figuratively, not militarily - not in any way. You went further to even say he did so "casually." This is toxic; responsible people should not casually repeat falsehoods about candidates - any candidates - because it gives life to them. The voting public is ignorant enough without more disinformation.
- Anthony Citrano
The checks and balances system, btw, was formed back before our government was tainted by capitalistic intentions. So technically, $$$ = Power, which makes the most powerful branch, the House :)
- Mona Nomura
I agree with Mona that one of the reasons the system is broken is money - Congress essentially is constantly running for re-election. There are ways to fix this beyond the scope of this thread. But you said a minute ago that SCOTUS had all the power, now you say Congress does. Wha? Also, the House is not a branch of gov't, Congress is, but I take your point. And to reiterate, agree with...
- Anthony Citrano
Anthony? Did you read what I wrote up there? Even if you and I know that attacking terrorist cells in another nation, the point is, do the OTHER countries know? Post-Bush, we need a more globally oriented President to represent our country, now so more than ever, and I am NOT willing to back any of the lesser evils. And the Supreme Court Justice System does ultimately hold the power, when it comes to decisions based on our country. They can rule on issues brought forth to them, which no one can over turn.
- Mona Nomura
Mona of course I read it. Sorry, but I refuse to let people get away with making false statements. I have been nonpartisan about that and defended other candidates against this as well. It's just not right. I think it's irresponsible and I feel it equally irresponsible to let it slide. Obama did not casually speak of invading Pakistan. You said he did.
- Anthony Citrano
So, Mona, the Senate is just some weird extraconstitutional branch floating out there in space somewhere?
- Anthony Citrano
But he did, Anthony... but regardless, the bigger picture is more of my point. If it'll make you see what I'm trying to say by retracting my statement, then I will. Either way, I've personally seen a lot of progression and refinement in Obama's speech since the primaries.
- Mona Nomura
"I've been involved in every single major national security crisis in the last twenty years" 0:36

Anthony: At this point, I don't have faith in any of the branches, since frankly, they are all working for one thing = $$$
- Mona Nomura
By your logic we invaded Afghanistan and Sudan in 1998. I don't know a single military strategist, political official, or student of geopolitics who would agree with you. Regardless, he said nothing of the sort. Onward. I also agree with you that he has evolved. I find that a refreshing change from the Bush doctrine that personal change/evolution is dangerous/bad.
- Anthony Citrano
"Obama said if elected in November 2008 he would be willing to attack inside Pakistan with or without approval from the Pakistani government, a move that would likely cause anxiety in the already troubled region." http://www.reuters.com/article...
- Mona Nomura
I don't understand what you mean by 'my logic we invaded Afghanistan and Sudan in 1998"
- Mona Nomura
Anthony: At this point, we are talking in circles about who is right and who is wrong. It doesn't matter. My concern is, as I keep stating, I would like the next president to be able to handle diplomatic relations w/out causing rifts or misunderstandings. The global economy and powers are slowly shifting, and the United States is slowly getting cut out of the equation. I don't know about you, but that concerns me. GREATLY.
- Mona Nomura
We attacked inside both those countries in 1998. Did we invade them? God, no. Was it an act of war against that nation itself? God, no. It's a perfect analogue. You're equating the attack of a terrorist facility inside another country with an invasion. You're also equating it with a direct attack on a sovereign nation. And, they're not in any way the same thing. Not even a little bit.
- Anthony Citrano
But Anthony, it doesn't matter what you and I see, it's what those countries see...
- Mona Nomura
Wow...an intelligent conversation on politics outside a political blog. No f-bombs, hardly any misinformation...I think I'm going to cry. Yay for everyone in this thread.

"hardly any" is right, FM. ;) Mona, you felt the candidates were stronger back in the Clinton years? When? 92? 96? Stronger in what way? Clinton had zero foreign policy experience / creds and he ran against rather pathetic candidates both times. (disclaimer: I was on his staff and supported him passionately)
- Anthony Citrano
Anthony: LOL @ 'hardly any'.. we both think we're right, but that's not the point :) As far as candidates go, I firmly believe until Dubya vs Gore, we pretty much had pretty solid folks in the running. And although Clinton had zero foreign policy experience, he had enough smarts to bring in the 'experts'. ie: Carter to deal with N. Korea. It's unfortunate, though, that a president is judged upon charisma and mannerisms more so than their actual policies. What it comes down to, is approval ratings.
- Mona Nomura
...both domestically and internationally, and how these individuals 'look' on the surface. But isn't that the case for all job roles with individuals that hold responsibility?
