Does anyone use both the Evernote iPhone app and the Instapaper iPhone app? If so, why? I'm just trying to figure out the point.
Tilt scrolling and Tweetie integration. I talked about it here in the Apple Room http://friendfeed.com/e... - Christopher Harley
I use InstaPaper on my iPod Touch - because the we only have #nearlynet in NZ - wifi isn't everywhere, and often costs. MobileSafari tends to reload a page you leave open when you switch tabs, incurring more data charges or requiring a net connection to continue reading an article or page online. Flat rate connectivity isn't a reality in New Zealand - every bit costs - so a local cache... more... - Jo Booth
I've used both. Evernote I use because I also have the firefox extension installed so i can access all my notes in either application. Instamapper, I don't see a reason for most people to use unless some 3rd party make some great app to take advantage of their data. I only use it to program and play with the raw API data they provide - brendan
@brendan Instamapper or Instapaper? - Christopher Harley
Tweetie integration is the big win on Instapaper for the iPhone. - Bill Sodeman
i do. instapaper's offline feature is as of yet unmatched by evernote for iphone. it loads fast and remembers your position in a document. i think the two companies should work together to integrate much like tweetie has done with instapaper. - pendolino
Evernote has some cool features, take a picture of something with text and it can search and find the text in the image, Instapaper is good for when you come across a story you want to read but don't have time, you send the link to it and when you have time you go to your repository and read the stories you saved and it marks them read and removes them from the list. It's bookmarking with a specific purpose. - Brian
What are the differences between these services? - Raphael, Raphael
I use evernote as a reference and a second brain and Instapaper for articles I just want to read at a later date - Simon Tracey
evernote is my outsourced brain (archive) and instapaper my todolist. - denise
I struggled to figure out the point too - I looked at Evernote, and saw how terrible the desktop app was, and couldn't figure out why Leo Laporte was so crazy about it. - Jonathan Beckett

Google Wave crashes on beach of overhype: http://scobleizer.com/2009... my blog about Wave.
I agree with you on this. Been playing with it in the dev preview and now in the released version and until I get people I know on there and reasons to discuss or collaborate then I don't see the value. The concept is excellent, the execution is excellent, I just don't think the product is what people are expecting. - Keith Bennett
When I first saw the release video of Wave it was clear this wasn't something that would be for you to invite all your friends to. I'm surprised at your harsh review in such a fast manner -- you opened it up to the world of your "friends" to play in the sandbox -- but did you actually have a mission? You actually point out that this has great potential for group work. It's about... more... - Elaine Young, Ph.D
Writing off Wave at this point is a bit like walking into a hardware store, picking up a hammer, walking around the store looking for stuff to hit and declaring "Why would I ever want a hammer? This is a waste of time." For teams and workgroups looking to improve the way they communicate and collaborate, Wave might be a great tool. For others, not so much. - Ken Sheppardson
Elaine: you are hoping for something more in depth? Come back in a month after things settle out and developers ship some real tools for it. Welcome to our real time world. Why do you assume that normal people will give ANY tool more than an hour before they decide whether it sucks or not? - Robert Scoble
The amount of hype this thing got will NOT be realized by a collaboration scenario. I had this years ago with Ray Ozzie's tools. Geesh. - Robert Scoble
since you dont have a use for it, can i haz your invite? - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Oh, I'm not arguing that it's over-hyped. That's the nature of the real time social media hype echo chamber we live in these days. :-) That's not to say it isn't a cool tool. BTW, I really miss Groove. :-( - Ken Sheppardson
I won't believe for a second that Google created Wave to be anything less than an entrance into competition with Facebook for mass users. Google does one thing very well for mass usage, Search. The other things are great tools and have a base, but this was a Social Networking play, disguised as a collaboration tool. I think Robert is right, this is NEVER going to match the hype. - Patrick Boegel
I think you're absolutely right, Robert. I got my invite, all excited, signed up, added a friend, and.... *fizzle*... it's chat, it's IM, it's a bad twitter client... I hope it will evolve into something worthwhile. - Jan Ole Peek
I always understood wave as the next evolution of xmpp - something google envisaged when they first got their hands on jabber. Something distributed merging the features of instant messaging, forum and newsgroup. It was not aimed at twitter or facebook, it was more aimed at some of the live features of Notes and Groupwise and forums. PS: the hype it got is the same as every time google... more... - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I've been a wavesandbox user for months and today I got both my wave invite and as it just so happens I also got my threadsy invite. Suffice to say I'm much more excited about threadsy! Why? because it's actually helpful. - Bob Stewart
It's clearly not a 1:1 replacement for email and its early yet. This platform is made for customization. As soon as the development community catches up with concern/demand then I think Wave will be far more refined and valuable as a productivity tool. I think it's way too early to say its overhyped but it certainly makes for a great blog title :) Have a great time out in HMB with Chase today. - Jim Goldstein
How about that, you're absolutely right Robert. - Peter Kruit
I think I mentioned a month ago that people were going to be overwhelmed by this and it may be too soon to launch to the public. - Jesse Stay
This is one of those times where I'm happy to let the gang of 2000 beat it up before getting in. - Stuart Miniman
You are in the gang of 2000. Sorry, Stu. - Louis Gray
Imagine a Twitter network with five people on it, none of whom actually work on any of the same projects you need to finish this week. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Am I the only one who has been puzzled when people started saying "this is gonna be the new facebook/twitter"? I watched the whole 1.5 hour demo video and that thought never crossed my mind, nor did using it with dozens upon dozens of people at a time. The only things I saw them demo was a variety of tasks between a handful of friends or colleagues. Robert's right, when you've got a ton... more... - brendan
I didn't get an invite, so good. - Jeremy Campbell from twhirl
pfff who needs an invite anyways... - sofarsoShawn
Gee I wonder who overhyped it? - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I collaborate with others to actually do things. Yes, Wave is young, but damn! I see its potential and I declare it awesome. - ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
Google Wave passes the twitter test. Lots of folks didn't get twitter (and still don't) when it first appeared. GW will follow a similar trajectory..geek early adoption and later mass adoption. I like it that people don't quite get GW which means that people will use it in multiple ways, as they do twitter. I project that it will live up to the hype much like the iPhone. - Jim Posner
Or it'll follow the FriendFeed curve: a few geeks will get it, use it, become dedicated to it, it'll never see mass adoption, then the engineers will get recruited to work on other projects and the technology will just get folded into other systems... - Ken Sheppardson
My understanding is the intent was to re-invent email. So I see the gmail population eventually ending up on GW. Google as a rule has had few bombs. Certainly the GW platform will evolve (filters) to address some of the concerns Robert has. - Jim Posner
interesting review, i will have to check it out for myself! twitter(at)locspoc - Loc
Can't wait to see how the users evolve ways of using it that help to moderate the wave. Appreciate the fact that Robert and others (some of you) are sharing this experience and these diverse reactions. - Holly Rae
Agreed, Scoble. I don't see this as a good friendfeed replacement anymore. - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
There is Etherpad and Zenbe ShareFlow. I would wait and see how GoogleWave evolves. - Wins Fern
Nice to see you present some critical thoughts on this, and I must say that your comments seem very sensible! I would also like to point to services like Etherpad when it comes to real-time collaboration on documents, and I also think there seems to be (potentially) a lot of noise in Google Wave. It will be interesting to see though :-) - Reidar

1Password looks interesting and simple. I'm ready to jump, even for $40 to make password management easier that trying to remember where I stored the last password. Like the mobile app feature too. Wait or Go? http://agilewebsolutions.com/product...
1password.jpg
1password-2.jpg
1Password is a Password Manager that uniquely brings you both Security and Convenience. It is the only program that provides Anti-Phishing protection and goes beyond password management by adding Web Form Filling and Automatic Strong Password Generation. All your confidential information, including passwords, identities, and credit cards, is kept in one secure place provided by Apple's OS X Keychain. - Dave
I've considered using an app like this but I just can't get my head around having to install an app just to access various sites. And if I'm at a computer that doesn't have the app installed and/or if my phone is missing or broken? Locked out of stuff because of circumstance gives me the freak-out. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Akiva good point, so you vote wait:) - Dave
I use Keychain, but tend to remember most of my (many, many) logins anyway. I haven't encountered too many instances of being on the road and not being able to get access to something critical. I think Apple has been hesitant to bridge keychain to the iPhone (for good reason). I'd be interested to know how 1Password handles that issue. For now, on the phone, I'll either have an app logged in or remember the web credentials. - LogEx
If you have a lot of logins to enter, it is a great app. I manage over 500 websites and can't remember logins/passwords for all of them. Plus all my personal logins for various personal sites I visit. Having the ability to simply hit CMD+\ to login in is such a time saver. Its also great for sites where FF or Safari, etc won't save a login. Many other features make this the first plugin I install. - Mac64
I use lastpass.com. It's got a Firefox plugin but they also provide bookmarklets so you can login to sites via iphone or any pc browser without having to install anything. It also provides web form filling and some other features. - brendan
I just have a cipher that I use so that remembering passwords isn't a problem for me. - Akiva Moskovitz
I've always been partial to KeePass, which runs on just about every platform, is portable, and open source: http://keepass.info/ You can set it with both a key file and a master password for added security. The iPhone version has been rejected four or five times by Apple (most recently because Apple decided to ignore the documentation they requested) but with any luck will be available in the app store eventually - Justin Ribeiro
I have always been using InformEnter addon with Firefox until something went wrong with my browser I couldnt edit the entries in InformEnter anymore... - TrafficBug
Jump in. I'm really happy with 1Password. Plus, they're very responsive to customer concerns. - Christopher Harley from iPhone
I love 1Password and even upgraded to the forthcoming new version. One thing to consider, however, is Xmarks. Might wanna check that out. It's down to your requirement though. Although 1Password is Mac only (including iPhone), I am happy with the feature-set. Xmarks, on the other hand, is a multi browser plugin, that can sync your passwords and bookmarks across platforms. I am not against Xmarks; I am just happy with 1Password. - Rohit
@Akiva cipher seems like a solid way to handle passwords. Still need something for those that can't be set manually. Thanks for feedback everyone. - Dave
If Keepass ever gets approved for the iPhone then I will switch back to that. Until then, 1Password is an awesome tool. Save the keychain in a Dropbox folder to sync between Macs, and sync to iPhone via WiFi for portability. - Andy Bold
I wish I I hadn't bought the mobile version, but the desktop version is indispensable for me. - cecily

Rumor: Microsoft Plans to Counter Android, iPhone with Two Mobile OSes
"A Digitimes report, based on insider information from sources at Taiwan handset makers, suggests that Microsoft has readied a dual-platform strategy to take on the Android platform and Apple's iPhone. Under this strategy, Microsoft will not withdraw Windows Mobile 6.5 from the market even after Windows 7 Mobile is released during the fourth quarter of 2010. Instead, it will keep Windows Mobile 6.5 – a minor upgrade – on the market, albeit at a lower price point." - Oğuz Serdar from Bookmarklet
I want this Microsoft Phone http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Mac64
I think Digitimes got it wrong, from the other articles I've read. MS' plan is to keep WM 6.5 as a base solution and WM 7 for elite/more capable phones. That way, it can attack both the high end Android/BB/iPhone devices and whatever low end Android devices roll out later this year. Also, there's been some indication that Windows Mobile will be rebranded Windows Phone. I'm assuming that... more... - LANjackal
wait.. so they are pitting 6.5 against Android? Hah! And Win7 mobile won't be out until 4th quarter 2010? That is funny. - Tim Hoeck
yeah, saying MS is behind in this case is probably the understatement of the year - LANjackal

Best password storage program? These things are really starting to tax my memory.
I don't use any, but I've heard good things about KeePass (http://keepass.info). - imabonehead
I personally use PhraseExpress which isn't billed as a password storage program, but can function that way. I've also heard fantastic things about LastPass, even that it does better than KeePass. http://www.pcmag.com/article... - Miss Elle
RoboForm used to be a fav, but it became intrusive and their licensing is too restrictive IMO. Now I save an encrypted text file of them all on a flash drive. - Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)

Prop. 8 is a constitutional amendment. I don't think the courts can invalidate it. - Stephen Foskett
Stephen: it was a state constitutional amendment. Why wouldn't the Fed courts be able to say "no way?" - Robert Scoble
Robert - I don't believe the Supreme Court will strike down the constitutional amendment. It's my gut. Researching, we have to find very solid CONSTITUTIONAL grounds to put down a state's right to ban a practice not protected by any portion of the Constitution. "Right to marriage" and "right to equality" are both not in there. Right to free speech, protest, and voting are, but possibly not this. States' Rights will trump. - Ben Parr
Ben: well, then, this law will stand for a generation because it needs 2/3rds vote to overturn it and there's too much hatred of homosexuality to get 2/3rds. It will fall eventually but might need 40 years or more. Personally, I'd separate out the legal part of marriage (the legal contract you make with the state) from the religious part of marriage (the thing you do in church) and make a case that those rights should be equally open to all. - Robert Scoble
@Ben: What about the *California* courts? That's where I think they go next. - AJ Kohn
steps foward, steps backward. :( :( - Chris Hollander
AJ: The courts can't overrule a constitutional amendment. The Supreme court can't overrule the U.S. constitution, same as Cali. - Ben Parr
Scoble, I completely agree with you. The state has no business getting involved with a religious ceremony/status like "traditional marriage" and therefore shouldn't recognize it at all. Most married couples are non-religious anyway. So we should just ditch "marriage" for all couples and have a civil partner status for any couple that wishes. If they want to couple that with some kind of religious marriage, and if that is recognized by their church, is entirely inconsequential. - Stephen Foskett
+10 Stephen - Ian May
it failed by 4% if I heard it right on the radio this morning - Mr. Gunn
+1 Stephen. If the word "marriage" was not used in the original law, Prop 8 may never have existed. - MVB (Grinch of FF)
@Ben: I think you're right on the state level. But there is some precedent to the Federal courts invalidating state level amendments when they believe it violates the US Constitution, correct? - AJ Kohn
I was just wondering about this. 2 passed! (factory farms)! - Patricia
@Ben the Right for Women to vote wasn't in the constitution before either but we as a nation determined that women should be treated with equality and allowed to vote. Why should we deny a person the right to marry based on their sexual orentation? If this was simply about a religous determination and ceremony then it shouldn't involve the state, but now we are talking about legal marriage rights that heterosexual couples are currently entitled. - Bryan

By the time a cop pulls someone over, can't they just exit out of their e-mail or text screen and claim they were attempting to dial a number? - Kevin Scott
Hands-free texting? - Daniel Shaw
This might provide yet another good reason to implement better voice recognition to mobile devices as it could be used to "write" text message. Yes, that might have limited usability and high amount of errors but didn't people also say that about text messages? - Daniel Schildt

KevinScott, if in good faith a cop witnesses you writing, sending, or reading a text message, or perhaps after a crash even if you are not at fault, i suspect this law would give probable cause to seize your device and scroll your list of messages, and collect it as evidence.
