more like why is everyone trying to be like friendfeed. since facebook copied the idea from them

The most important feature that Greader needs to be social like FriendFeed and Facebook is the realtime

That would require a complete UI overhaul. This would be why GReader's social component doesn't wow me: it seems tacked on as opposed to integrated and purpose-built

I always wonder if these guys actually believe what they say, or if it's just a game. "Murdoch expressed confidence in MySpace and criticized Facebook. "Facebook is like a directory," he said. "How they make money is another matter.""

Facebook’s Twitterification: Is it the Right Move? [No, it's not. The idea is to create competition, not become the competition.] - http://mashable.com/2009...
Yes, it is a good strategy to implement twitter-ish features. It doesn't mean Facebook is trying to become twitter. It doesn't mean they are trying to destroy twitter. It is acknowledgment that twitter capabilities do seem to fit with the existing functionality and direction of Facebook.

The only problem for Facebook is if they don't offer any more functionality than Twitter at some stage. Then the two services are basically equal, and neither has more appeal. Except of course, the fact that Twitter is much more accessible, and plays well with FriendFeed.
- Carlton Prest
It's kind of a good idea. They need to stay relevant. But at the same time they need to make sure they don't abandon what drew users to them in the first place: Privacy and very selective life-sharing.

I agree with Carlton; Facebook's walled garden will hurt them in the longer term.

It depends upon how people use Facebook. I use both Twitter and facebook, and for very different reasons. FB is where I connect with old classmates & friends, and a few select people in the business world. Twitter (I have 3 ids) is where I keep track of industry happenings for the business areas I work in. I wouldn't choose to have 99% of the ppl I connect with to be among my FB people.

I'm a bit confused about how they can sell blocks of 1000 followers who also just happen to be interested in your topic. The whole concept of buying and selling followers seems so silly and contradictory to the purpose of Twitter altogether.

I started on facebook BECAUSE of the privacy controls. I dont want to have some troll telling me that I am stupid or something on my pages.

Value comes first. Without value, content is noise and the audience is irrelevant. We focus too much on "creating content" without focusing first on value. Attracting an audience is like collecting followers - a numbers game. We need to think first about what value we are delivering to whoever the audience is or might be/become. Value will win.
- Ken Camp
content is king. marketing is the queen. traffic is the townspeople. gotta keep em happy or they'll show up with pitchforks and lanterns. or worse, they won't show up at all.
- chris
Exceptional content is centralized on focusing the attention of the audience, and inviting them to build/addon. It serves as a kernel for the crowd to iterate, converse, dissect, and construct new value from.
- Mark Essel
The content has to be their first. It's what prompts others to get involved. No content is equivalent to a silent existence... no one is attracted to silence unless they're looking to sleep. :-)

seeing as it's just 1 tap away from uploading to youtube, nope, not at all. what i wonder though, is how vimeo, blip.tv and others will counter and fight back.
