"Camilleri told Zales she would need surgery as soon as possible. "I told my manager I can't get upset because it could explode any minute," she said. "I typed up a letter asking for time off and guidance from human resources." One week later, on March 14, she was asked to attend a meeting with a new regional manager. "He said, 'You're terminated,'"

That used to happen a lot at the last office job I had. I even got laid off after I came back from disability. Totally expected. They fired one of the top sales women in her division. She had an emergency hysterectomy, a heart attack and learned she was going blind, all in the span of 4 weeks. She came back to work 4 weeks before she was supposed to, driving in early because the blindness made it hard for her to drive at night. She had a stroke in her cubicle, kept on working, they fired her the next day.

Made me blog it! It takes a lot to get me to post anything these days. I hope I'll get my post about Dave Arneson up tonight (I should have done it last night), but I have to go for a ride first. http://minimage.spaces.live.com/blog...

Anika, is it an insurance thing? They don't want to pay for health insurance that will probably drive their group policy up?

I have no idea why they do that, I should note that it was very selective based on gender and race. The woman above was also a black female. A white guy who had a heart attack, took a 4 month sabbatical after his 5 mos. recuperation, was given an administrative position with his six-figure salary. Whenever he felt stress, he would just leave and that was fine. Men, on the whole were given more leeway.

For example, in June 2002, 3 of the Latina and Asian salespeople were let go for "missing too many days" in one year. They were pregnant, so had to leave for prenatal visits and maternity leave. Whereas, the 5 white guys who also took off for prenatal visits and maternity leave kept their jobs. Single white moms were allowed to miss work for their kids illnesses, whereas the black, Latino and Asians were all asked to provide doctors notes.
