"Kevin Dunbar is a researcher who studies how scientists study things — how they fail and succeed. In the early 1990s, he began an unprecedented research project: observing four biochemistry labs at Stanford University. Philosophers have long theorized about how science happens, but Dunbar wanted to get beyond theory. He wasn’t satisfied with abstract models of the scientific method — that seven-step process we teach schoolkids before the science fair — or the dogmatic faith scientists place in logic and objectivity. Dunbar knew that scientists often don’t think the way the textbooks say they are supposed to. He suspected that all those philosophers of science — from Aristotle to Karl Popper — had missed something important about what goes on in the lab. No, that's called UNnatural selection. It requires a contrived scenario and does not exist in the state of nature, nor does it tend towards evolutionary change because being rich or poor is not a genetic trait, it is a social trait. Or perhaps you are what is sometimes called a social darwinist? Note that Darwin himself was not one of those, as can be easily learned from his collected writings and correspondence. MF/Kol = I live in Kingston on Thames. It's OK apart from the traffic (continually gridlocked) and the shops (girls just lurve them). Handy for getting into London both airports and out to the Thames Valley for work type things. Richmond Park and the river in walking distance is great too. - Andy C

"Undersea archaeologists have found the ruins of an ancient city on the bottom of the Caribbean Sea, and researchers claim that it is the fabled and lost city of Atlantis. The satellite photos do show something that could be a city, and the researchers believe that what they've found would predate the pyramids of Egypt. Indeed they claim to be able to make out a pyramid and other city-like structures from the satellite photos. The archaeologists have so far refused to divulge their identities or the location in the Caribbean. @Lo - when they first discovered skeletons in the underground caves in the Yucatan, I believe those were reported without much information at first (some of those areas have HUGE problems with tomb theft) so that they would be able to secure the site. It's fairly common to be coy with the discovery of major new archeological sites, but the anonymity here is unusual. Why make an announcement at all? There is a possibility that they've noticed (or suspect) that another team is nearby and want to establish priority, but don't want to tip them off if they *aren't* already on the trail. Morgan, it isn't true for legitimate archeological digs (professional archeologists don't need this kind of publicity, and amateurs are often just wrong), but it *is* sometimes true of treasure-hunting expeditions. One doesn't need prior publicity to raise money, and the other does. - Michael R. Bernstein

The film, based on the books by Philip Pullman and starring Elliott, Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, angered Catholics who accused it of promoting atheism. In the book trilogy, set in a series of parallel worlds, heroine Lyra fights the Magisterium, an evil organisation some have interpreted as being based on the Catholic Church. The Magisterium wields huge power and experiments on children. In a climactic battle angels fight each other and "God" is presented as a frail, ancient and powerless figure. Catholic campaigners in America organised a boycott of The Golden Compass. I thought the film was supposed to have performed rather poorly compared to its cost to make and that there was a falling out with the writer/director? - joey

I thought part of the reason it performed poorly was because they changed the story. I liked the film - mostly because it's rare to see a film with a female heroine - but it really paled in comparison to the novel. - cecily

Yeah, I didn't think it was a success. I loved books 2 & 3 much more than 1, but the end is pretty freaking controversial. I was amazed they even considered a mainstream film. - Lo

Morgan, it hasn't been my experience that we see characters mature from pre-teens to sexual human beings in serialized movies. Take the Potter kids, for example. Sure, there's snogging, but they don't actually do anything until after they become adults (as an epilogue to the final book). I had a feeling that parents would get upset at that part of Lyra's growth process if we ever saw a second or a third movie come to light. - cecily

"A man claims the Church of Scientology forced him to work as a “virtual slave” for 16 years at jobs ranging from washing pots and pans to restoring old films produced by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. John Lindstein says he was kept “busy, poor, tired, and uninformed” by Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige at the church’s ranch in Hemet, and feared that “things would get even worse if he did not work as ordered.” Lindstein’s Superior Court complaint alleges human trafficking and violations of hour and wage laws at the church’s “Gold Ranch” compound near Hemet, a semirural area east-southeast of Los Angeles. "I don't for a minute buy cannabis "fatalities". It's impossible to kill yourself with pot. The press reports "cannabis-related" deaths which is surreal. David McCandless, who devised the graph and runs Informationisbeautiful, adds: There has never been a single documented case of fatal cannabis overdose. Also, the government's own figures don't tally. While drug figures from the Office Of National Statistics register 19 cannabis related deaths, the mortality stats from the same office log only 1 death. But even granted that, you can see how the media irrationally focuses on what isn't the biggest problem by any objective assessment. And this focus can distort public policy.
