“Choosing between Obama and McCain is like being offered the choice to have your leg amputated or get shot in the head. Obviously, the first choice is better than the alternative but it ain't good for me and I don't have to be happy about it.”
I don't agree with you on which one is the stubby leg, and which is the hole in the head, but your general argument is sound. :-) - Joey Gibson
I feel the same way, only with the players reversed. And with McCain, it may be more like having both legs amputated. Or one arm and one leg. Or an arm, a leg, and a few fingers. Come to think of it, getting shot in the head may be quicker. - Gregory Pittman
I felt the same with Kerry and Bush. Kinda' lost my enthusiasm for democracy after that one! - Paul Reynolds
Dennis, Robert's Mom was German. There is more truth to that quote than meets the eye. Robert, I am happy you made it there safe. I knew I could find you here :) We miss you goofy. - Maryam Scoble
First he takes Manhattan - Now he takes Berlin - Chris Loft
@ Chris Loft: That makes Scoble sound like a Muppet! ;) - Chris Luckhardt
Robert is already asleep but ROCMANUSA is still chugging along! Berlin is a LOT more awesome that I imagined. Sans the language gap. Some knockouts and even quite a few Drop Dead Gorgeousnesseslyisms - Rocky Barbanica
Rocky: just say "ein mal bier bitte" and you'll be OK. :-) I'm up now working on my Fast Company column. - Robert Scoble
Ya gotta be a fan of Eddie Izzard, folks - he rocks, the executive transvestite :) - Cheryl Allin via twhirl
"noch einmal" works nicely too. And yes, Eddie Izzard is brilliant. - Abby Martin
I really miss Tiergarten, almost the best park in Europe. Mein deutsch ist nicht sehr gut :-) first you take Berlin unt zen ze werld! - Majento (Early Adopter :)
Heh I know the odd perception of the quote AND Eddie Izzard's bit on that phrase. Great show, hope you enjoy Berlin, Robert! - Bryan
I've obviously missed something. Why are you in Berlin? - Dawn
I'm here to see the IFA show (huge consumer electronics show -- 200,000 attendees). I hear I'll be seeing new hyper efficient washing machines later today. Not sure that's a good thing, but someday I'll tell you about my experiences selling refridgerators and washingmachines along with cameras in a Silicon Valley discount store. - Robert Scoble
Now if it had Twitter on it, then it would be awesome. '@Washingmachine Cycle 1'... I just realised how lame my suggestion is... :( - John Worthington
Facebook is still the most useful new web project for me. I keep up with all of my old friends and current friends there. It's only boring to people who like to be on the cutting edge of the web. - Andrew Burd
Holy Cow!! Congrats on reaching 100,000,000 Facebook users - that's simply awesome!! yeah!! very impressive milestone!! :) - Susan Beebe
"The world's oldest recorded joke has been traced back to 1900 BC and suggests toilet humour was as popular with the ancients as it is today, British academics say.
The joke is a saying of the Sumerians, who lived in what is now southern Iraq, and goes: "Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband's lap."
It heads the world's Oldest Top 10 joke list published by the University of Wolverhampton. The oldest British joke dates back to the 10th century and reveals the bawdy face of the Anglo-Saxons. "What hangs at a man's thigh and wants to poke the hole that it's often poked before? A key."" - Patricia Hanrahan via Bookmarklet
Curiously, while the Sumerians pioneered both female flatulence and the wheel, male flatulence wasn't invented for another thousand years, by the Neo-Hittites, thus not necessitating the urgency of the pull my finger joke until the Iron Age. - Mark Trapp
Mark - You have some amazing knowledge. - Russellreno
Trying very hard to stifle a fit of the giggles here. - Patricia Hanrahan
Who wants to bet how many Olympic golds Phelps will win before retirement? 20? 30? Maybe we can revisit this thread in 2016... - Mitchell Tsai
He's almost certain to go to London in 2012, but it's unlikely that he'll compete in 2016. In 2012, he'll be 27, which is old for swimmers. He'll not do 8 events in 2012, either. This will definitely be his best year. - Mark Trapp
Does anyone else here think that they have been posting the worst pictures of Phelps celebrating? They don't show his passion, exuberance and joy...they make him look kind of mean. Like he could be a member of Cobra Kai Dojo. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
One oughtn't judge a book by its cover, but I think it's perfectly normal for our species, when one has that level of testosterone, adrenaline, lactic acid, etc. surging through one's body, to resemble a deranged howler monkey during exultation. He seems humble and boyish enough standing there while the national anthem is being played, and he always acknowledges the role of his teammates in his success. To me that speaks much louder than slapping the water with his fists at the end of a race. - Karim
“My high school freshmen English teacher had us write a letter to ourselves, and he would mail it ten years later. That was ten years ago. Can't wait to read what I wrote. He was my favorite teacher.”
I was in 1st grade during the Bicentennial in 1976 and we made a time capsule. We opened it when we all graduated from high school, added more to it and sealed it up again, to be opened by our kids/grandkids in 2076. - Patricia(Trish not Patty)
We're doing something kind of like it. We're writing letters to be be read again at the end of the year in English this year. Not quite as exciting. - Jake (aka Jawee) via twhirl
@Anna, did you get to achieve any of your childhood dreams, overcome your greatest fear? - Hao Chen
@possible248 I like the way you think. :) - Hao Chen
@Hao--I'm doing both those things right now...it's an interesting time! :O & :D - Anna Haro
This is why I keep a hand-written journal. :-) And I actually do go back and re-read them. Used to be every year, but now it's more novel-length. - Lisa L. Seifert
wonderful idea! Do you think you will have the same email in ten years ? Then it would be a lot easier! - JegerPhil - Phil
we're doing something like that here on FF, and with our blogs (if you have one)... the main reason i blog is to see how my own thinking evolves over time. sounds like a really cool English teacher, btw! - .LAGizmoto
I found a letter I wrote to my parents in the early 70's. I have not read it yet. - Russellreno
jeez... i think I'd be a little afraid to read it - Nathan Rein
I've looked up old Usenet posts that I wrote in the early 1980s. In fact, I'll be using one in a presentation that I'll be giving later this week. While the presentation focuses on law enforcement use of the Internet and other technologies, I threw a few general slides in there. The first shows the header for a Usenet post I wrote in 1982 about the then-new "Call of the West" album. The second shows the current Wall of Voodoo MySpace page. Just goes to show there is nothing new under the sun. - Ontario Emperor
in 1982 i was posting on local BBS's with a Vic-20 - Nathan Rein
"I entered a room that would soon swell to several hundred people, ranging from top-tier press to bloggers, including Jason Kincaid from TechCrunch, to random locals and a guy in a Bigfoot costume." -John McCrea. Nicely played, John! - DeWitt Clinton via Bookmarklet
Ah how crazy bigfoot can make us. It's utterly unbelievable the amount of attention these guys have gotten. I guess they realized they could kick it up a notch when they saw the guy who released the peeping tom "Alien" photos. - Brandon Titus
It was such a circus. I continue to shake my head. How is possible that the professional journalists in the room did not ask the obvious tough questions? - John McCrea
“To do this weekend: look into Google Insights more; look into Plaxo; look into Feedburner alternatives; figure out how to make truly modular Yahoo Pipes; set up Pipe templates; issue new PR Friendly Index. I may also make time to stroke cats and buy a house.”
Oh, and start sharing stuff direct through Friendfeed more. I have a sneaky feeling it could take the place of Twitter and the blog... - Brendan Cooper via twhirl
Not specifically, but the effort is aligned with the vision of data portability; the data portability group does not develop technical specs. Portable Contacts is a community effort to develop a single, universal, and easy-to-implement "people data" api - John McCrea
+1 for John's comment "DP does not develop tech specs". They build logos. Sorry, couldn't resist. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
"...there is strong support for the principle that users should be in control of their data and have the freedom to access it from across the web. And the major players have all recognized that they and their users are better off with secure contacts APIs (rather than having third-party services ask for users' credentials in order to scrape their data). As a result, we're seeing major Internet companies making contacts APIs available, such as Google's GData Contacts API, Yahoo's Address Book API, and Microsoft's Live Contacts API (with more to come). Not surprisingly though, each of these APIs is unique and proprietary. We believe this creates the ideal conditions for developing a common, open spec that everyone can benefit from." - Bill Hooker
Joseph Smarr of Plaxo is playing a leadership role in this community effort, but he's getting great involvement from companies of all sizes and from grass-roots folks, too. - John McCrea
Are these generally oriented towards bioscience? - Rajarshi Guha
Rajarshi, they generally are (and possibly we have a slightly skewed group here as well) but hopefully they can become more general (or some more specific ones will arise) - Cameron Neylon
Very cool. I got my current contractor job through LinkedIn, so yes, this social media stuff *is* useful. - Steven Kaye
Congratulations. I saw / heard about Connectbeam recently in a trade rag. Very interesting. - Atul Arora
Thanks guys - to actually have something happen from all this blogging and FriendFeeding was a surprise. There is truth in the emerging idea that Google Search = your resume. - Hutch Carpenter
Thanks Shane - the BEA folks are landing in some interesting places. Looking forward to seeing Ajay (Oracle) and Cameron (Jive) at future shows. - Hutch Carpenter
Wow, congrats Hutch! Small world, I just spoke on the phone with a ConnectBeam VP of sales this afternoon, great guy. Looking forward to the demo. - Jody C
Cool Jody! I just sat through my first customer preso/demo today. I'll have to make sure I can attend the one for you. - Hutch Carpenter
