I will rearrange the order but your day will not change. Remember to put up your work online and link it HERE (in comments) by 5 pm the day before.

http://vimeo.com/7881068 Here is a link to a piece about my friend Liz. There is SO much more footage and I'm looking forward to sharing some of the more intimate pieces later. She has seen this and loved it, so I am comfortable sending it out. She is so inspiring. Some of you know that I will not be in class for our final presentations as I am leaving for London tomorrow till the 14th....

REMEMBER - 10 Minutes max - Show the BEST PARTS of your project (and then leave room for discussion. 1-2 minute setup. 5-6 min show video. 2-4 min discussion. It's your job to manage the 10 minutes.
- Dean Terry
Oops, I posted my video elsewhere on the Friendfeed site. Here it is again. I tried to post it last night, but YouTube was not accepting any new videos...http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Dave
My Trilogy project is uploaded. I've changed just a couple things on Angela and Collin's, and finished Brenda's (which I haven't shown to the class yet). The vids are here: http://bit.ly/6i14R3 They can be watched in any order; I put them order of filming: Collin, Angela, Brenda.
- Chelsea Conway
After looking at this over and over, I've decided that I'm swapping out the B-roll at the beginning . . . that may or may not happen by tomorrow, but regardless . . . Ladies and Gentlemen . . . The King Bucks . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Nico Martini
After the critique from the class last time, I was a bit lost. So I went back to do another interview with Irene and filmed more footage. The focus of the video has been changed from the husband to the wife. I have tried my best to convey the best message I can. Hope this one will work... http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Annis Leung
Hi guys and gals, I am in dire need of the Sony Sound Recorder. We can't find any of them in the lab. Can I please get it from any of you who might not be using it ASAP. I can pick it up. Please let me know. thanks
Everyone should go to at least one day of VideoFest http://www.videofest.org/ Here's away to get in free: "VideoFest is giving out Free All Fest Passes to whomever shows up to help set up at the Angelika 2pm WED Nov4th. Call Johnny with the sneakers:214-679-1159 for more info."
looks like a number of people are going to be surprised....
- Dean Terry
you are right! I am one of them. see you tomorrow in class. My rough draft is very rough... hope it is ok to show.
- Annis Leung
In the interest of making amends for my past presenting discretions I'm going to show a rough cut of webisode No. 1 which is 2:00 in length. :)
- Patrick Dowling
The adaptive limiter is a way to do it yes, and also using the compressor with gain control - will show in class also. Bottom line is learning how to control the audio dynamics (loudness/ softness) as well as EQ (frequencies, which we'll talk about later) is really important in any media production that uses sound.
- Dean Terry
oh, I have an interview on Fri afternoon and will need to use the lav mic. The boom mic I have is the big one separated from the camera, and don't have one attached on the camera. I will bring back to school on Thurs anyway. Can you bring your lav mic so that I can use it on Fri?
- Annis Leung
so we totally forgot to talk about PAC-WE http://pac-we.net/ we're not done yet with the site but there is a facebook group and also look for word on twitter.
Basically a art performance showing support for health care reform - but with a variety of perspectives. You don't have to participate or agree but it could make an interesting (and visual) topic.
- Dean Terry
Need technical advice. As I've been testing the new audio gear I'm finding a sync issue. It shouldn't be related to the recorded audio bit rate, but it seems to be. Recording 24 bit audio doesn't sync w/vid, but 16 bit does. Unless you tell me otherwise I'm opting for less sampling and better sync. It sounds good at 16, so that's where I'm leaning.
By the way, this is for the Tom Riccio interview Monday. I was just thinking, maybe sync drift isn't the big worry as he won't be up on screen for too long. Better quality audio a priority?
- Patrick Dowling
for voice 16 vs 24 doesn't make that much difference as long as you have good levels going in. You are going to compress the voice later anyway. Bit depth = dynamic range (soft to loud) and also signal (voice) to noise (background) range.
- Dean Terry
Thanks! The shoot's been postponed (bad weather again today) until Friday. Should be nice out.
- Patrick Dowling
Having a little trouble getting the Sennheiser shotgun mike to work with the recorder... I have it set for XLR, but I'm getting no pickup. And I have a hunch I'm doing something stupid, but I don't know what. Ideas?
sorry for delay - make sure phantom power is turned on on the back. The mics require power and "phantom power" sends power form the recorder through the mic cable to the mic.
- Dean Terry
two very interesting feeds I would recommend for reading in EMAC or for Class Discussion: (read first) http://pro.gigaom.com/2009... to get this: http://newteevee.com/2009... (they are linked). It is interesting as far as what is happening to traditional video content. Please add more if you can think to do so.
I watch almost all movies via Netflix streaming via TiVo to plasma, with a few from amazon. Once HBO, Showtime, ESPN, etc allow buying programs à la carte via on demand I'll have no reason to pay for cable or satellite. As the second article states, they better be paying attention. The net is the uber wave that has the power to flatten or increase the intensity of all other waves. So surf!
- Dean Terry
Adam, please allow me to direct message you. Thanks, John Kay
- John F Kay
"And our cognitive abilities actually go backwards when we're watching television or doing stuff on computers." Is this book author, Walter Mosley, a little biased?
- John F Kay
Looks like publishers are once again trying to make things more 21st century for the reader/viewer. First it was ebooks, now this. What's next?
- Jaime Fowler
This makes me wonder how "traditional" teaching style will change if this sort of thing becomes mainstream. Why would one go to class for a teacher who lectures for fifteen minutes, then says "see this example", when you can get the same thing anywhere, anytime from a "vook"? I see the structure of the learning environment would necessarily shift to a more collaborative/discussion style. Thoughts?
- Lacy Mahone
@Lacy you are right on. That's what Dave & I are thinking as we develop EMAC in real time. F2F collaboration is critical and something a classroom, if reconfigured physically and in terms of process, can facilitate nicely. The new building is all about that.
- Dean Terry
Hi Chelsea, you basically need to do same steps at home. Connect the camera, go to FCP File> Log & Transfer. Then select and capture the clips you want to transfer to the computer. let us know of how it goes.
- monaism
Ah, log and transfer, that's the difference, I was trying to do log and capture and it wasn't working... Thanks!
- Chelsea Conway
Log and capture is for tape based media (HDV)
- Dean Terry
This also may help shed some light on this subject as well...http://newteevee.com/2009... , What are everyone's thoughts on this? What do you want to see happen?
- Adam L.
I've always thought that cable TV should be user-based pricing, allowing the user to pay only for the channels they want to watch (i think some people would even pay a little extra for that, like me...) but I hadn't thought of that same idea for the internet, so that's an interesting thought. I don't know how well it would work in the current business models, but maybe that just means there needs to be new models?
- Chelsea Conway
As far as a tiered plan though, it brings about the question of what data are you getting? What data are you able to access and because of it can you get all of the information? It's more of a question of censorship in a sense than anything else.
- Adam L.
let's all take a look at this and talk about it briefly next class (10/6) - any other topics?
- Dean Terry
Another topic of interest to me is ownership of content. Artworks, video, photography, especially content created digitally and shared on the web.
- Willie Baronet
Having a helicopter is helpful ;-) - Also I'm happy to share my experiences with the 5Dmkii video. It's great under highly controlled conditions.
- Dean Terry
I've been trying to upload videos to YouTube from my iPhone without success. I go through the whole process then a dialog box pops up and says cannot upload video. I'm not sure how else to accomplish a transfer from my phone to my computer (files are too big for email)... suggestions?
Yes, for Group A : I talked about it in class. (1) Record two people talking from the angles I showed in class and (2) do a brief interview with someone on camera. Group B will be presenting research and their ideas for projects.
- Dean Terry
Anybody have any other topics to discuss?
- Dean Terry
Adam Brackin would frown upon the use of the term "social media" used in the NPR set up piece. He stressed that in the digital narrative class. It's social media NETWORK. Check that - it's Social Network TOOL.
- Patrick Dowling
I'm stoked! I set up a Facebook group (with Mona's help - thanks Mona!) and I've already got 4 members! It's called PCAC (Patrick's Creative Arts Council). If you guys want to join in the zaniness, just ask to add me as a friend and I'll make sure to add you to the group. Here's the link. http://www.facebook.com/group...
Okay, I need to vent. Is it just me or does Time Warner Cable blow big chunks? Uploading video with their wireless router is a joke. And of course they won't get their router to talk to my Airport base station. Any suggestions on a less LAME provider? I'm thinking two tin cans and some string might be better! Aaargh.
We ended up getting ATT Uverse - but just the Internet connection not all the TV services etc.
- Dean Terry
I bought my own cable modem and own router and that fixed most of my bandwith issues I just switched to Verizon, I have my old modem if you want to try it.
- Adam L.
I'm also in Lakewood and use ATT internet only, not the tv stuff.
- Willie Baronet
Hey Dean, what Internet speed do you have with ATT Uverse? I'm leaning towards their TV/Internet/Phone package, but wanted to make sure I get access to enough of their bandwidth. Should I get their max internet (18down/1.5up) or would splitting the difference be okay(6down/1up)? Thanks.
- Patrick Dowling
Patrick, we just moved to DFW. We had to get TWC in order to get phone service. We've had 5 service calls in a month. Our bill has been $230 a month. The cable box/DVR makes all kind of noise and throws off much heat. You have to make sure that the modem has different frequencies for the wireless internet and wireless phones or else the internet does not work when you are on the phone....

- John F Kay
Thanks for the support John. I didn't mention that the box emits joyous "white noise". It's not exactly a gentle brook - it's friggin' annoying! If any of you own stock in Time Warner sell it today. That company is going to be bankrupt in less than 2 years!
