ok, good point but I don't put that much effort into Twitter so why would I put that much effort into 12 seconds? OK, I probably spend 10 mins editing my video but those cocktail videos would have taken a lot longer to film and edit. If I wanted to spend that much time making a movie, I'd stick it on youtube. Nonetheless, I think I am gonna keep on using 12secs after my 14 days is up.

Very cool Zee thanks for sharing - awesome to think how far we have come. When I first started surfing the net it was with 28k modems. Even the slower fax speed ones - was that 1400?? Anyway been a wild ride to my 8MB/sec connection that I now enjoy. This makes me appreciate it all the more.

Wow! 1964! My first BBS was on a 1200baud modem in about 1981. My brother & I ran it, hoping people would upload games! (They did! we're were stoked!) -We about freaked when our dad came home with a 2400 baud modem (twice as fast! - the old man would NEVER get his home office back! - but us young geeks couldn't understand why the synchronous 4800 baud modem wouldn't work! ). BBSing was my first social media. Our first global email was in 1983. Thanks Zee!

If you look at the images and ignore the arms paying attention to the body though Phelps (except for his arms) is actually in front. His arms are moving though and the other swimmers arms are just pointed forward gliding. It would be interesting to see high speed footage of the next few frames -- the ones between this and the touch (if they exist)

Seems like the key information is between slides 4/8 and 5/8, rendering this frame-by-frame slightly silly. I'm also gonna quibble over the size of SI.com's top banner, forcing me to scroll down with each click. What I do like however is Phelps' arm-speed and rate of approach, awesome final push.

Agree Dave. Wondered why they didn't create a high-quality animated gif themselves. It's easy to do and take no time at all. Heck, they could even make it more fun like allow us to zoom in and around the swimmers to view it from different angles...top, side then underneath. heh

Since there are over 24 frames per second even in ordinary video film, and far more than that in high motion film, we certainly could have used a few more images. Although, this is impressive and his last half stroke effort, amazing.

24 fps gives a picture every .04 seconds or so -- the margin of victory was .001 wasn't it? So we may actually be seing the 24 fps frames here. I am not sure about high speed cameras -- what is the fps for them -- were they actually active and is footage available?

I used Tivo to slow this down on Saturday and was amazed at how close the finish was. What's even more amazing to me is how little NBC used the underwater cameras they had installed. I would have liked to have seen more footage from below the water - the little that they did use really illustrated the differences in technique used.

Good video. I'm buying one in the UK because it does everything I want except video (although hopefully Qik will come to the app store if the SDK allows it to work on non-jailbroken phones). I'll probably get a Flip or similar to cover the video side of things anyway.

Here is my quandry - I use twitterfeed to add blog and tumblog posts to Twitter but I have both those feeding FF as well. I also have unique status updates on Twitter. Should I disable the Twitter-to-FF updates? Or just depend on folks to block my Twitter content?

I have FF as my inbox and ping.fm as my outbox. So when I have something to say then I shout it on all my SNS via ping.fm. If someone has something to say to me then I check my twitter replies, FF, occasionally I check Plurk. I am also using a greasemonky script that has created a group of people I usually am interested in what they have to say. Another script allows me to filter via service on FF so that I can keep everything plugged into my FF.

tsudohimh, Yes you can get a kind of a loop going with these things. I don't really use auto-updaters for this reason. I do crosspost image from Brightkite to twitter which both feed into ff. I should fix that I think. There's a certain amount of duplication that's unavoidable I guess if you want to crosspost at all.

Identi.ca - I think that the open source might see some interesting developments. FF - yup I think they have something... what are they going to do with it? twitter - still need to get their shit together before they loose everyone... I agree that the micro blog is great and has a future. What that is is anyone's guess at this point

Dave, why not skip Twitter entirely. With FriendFeed you can choose a cool graphic to go with your link. You can't do that with Twitter. Really FF is a superior platform.

Thomas it's the people. There are a lot of people who use Twitter who don't use FF. It's only geeks here near as I can tell. I don't think the people here are all that interested in some of the things I'm interested in. And there are a lot more idiot Republicans here. I like intelligent people and there aren't too many smart folk who are willing to admit to being Republican these days. So you're pretty much left with the slimedogs. Present company excepted of course. :-)

I'm using FF differently than Twitter. I follow many fewer here and am being followed by many fewer. I like the intimacy, talking mostly with people I actually know in most cases. At Twitter I have many followers and use it to get more viewership of a new blog post.

Duncan and Thomas have it right. You always have the option of using Twitter but participating in Friendfeed returns more. I use both as many do (but hide and just occasionally look at the Twitter posts to avoid overload). It's getting better each week. Simply a matter of how YOU choose to set it up.

I also think that politics are not the only thing to talk about in the world and think that gauging someone's intelligence or the value of their conversation by their political party affiliation is, well, pretty idiotic.

I actually prefer to use Twitter for less important messages and FriendFeed for stuff when I want to generate conversation. The idea behind my logic is that some people, to reduce the noise, block all tweets, as they consider tweets less important. I agree with these folk, so I use Twitter for stuff that they're probably not interested in.

Suggestion #1. Release a version that merges Twitter and FriendFeed in a single window. All other features should be held off until this has been completed.

@Deepak, if done elegantly I think you'd be ok. For instance, a toggle button to swtich from either service would be nice. The challenge on a merge is that I follow folks on Twitter that don't have FF accounts and conversely I follow users on FF who I don't on Twitter. So handling the Tweets from these 2 types of users may be a bit challenging.

I think they should remain separate, too. I'm not enough of a fan of FriendFeed to want them merged. However, I would like a way to keep tweets of people I follow on Twitter from appearing in the FriendFeed window. Right now, I see the tweets twice; once in each window.

Thanks for asking Loic! I too like the idea of merging, but add the *option* of having 2 windows merged into 1, but maintain current functionality (let folks choose this). DeDuping would be a must for the merged option. Alternately have 1 window with 2 TABS - for twitter or friendfeed.

I am not sure about the merged window. I like being able to keep the streams separate. FF would push twitter content offscreen too fast. As an option? Sure. What I DO want is an option to reply to FF about a tweet right from the twitter stream

For one it would be great if it didn't delete my FF post while I'm writing when it updates. I prefer the separate windows as well over a merged one. Tabs could work but only up to a point. My suggestion is to use some contextual UI that could include having just one single window with an update bar to show the user which services have new entries. The user could then click on the items...

Perhaps the update bar could show/hide itself only either when it has updates or when the user mouses over a particular part of the window. That way the navigation is only temporary but reveals itself either on demand or when it is relevant to the user.

I have yet to find a FF client which I feel comfortable with. Although twhirl is a cool application, it just does not provide the same experience as visiting the FF web site. Maybe the interface is too busy compared to the FF web interface?

I love the picture idea, and I don't have much use for FriendFeed features quite yet, although if you want the bleeding edge adopter love, that would be the way to go. But yeah, personally I'd like to see more ways you could allow people to connect with content other than text. And if you could get video in there...whoa.

did not know you could do this. Cool for a quick share. But for adding video - do that to FeedFriend via seesmic or YouTube, Images - do that via flickr. Feed your existing services into it and take advantage of the "quick" features like commenting etc in FeedFriend. Otherwise the echo is going to get too loud. Nice idea - like it.
