totally got a cool idea for new schwag... two items: for new Moms, a friend feed shirt with slots for easy feeding of infants... and for new Pops like Louis, nipple with bottle attachment inserts with one nipple coming out of the first f and the second nipple coming out of the second d... saweet!
- Rob Reed
FF schwag and twins! best picture of the day!
- Sarah Perez
Mega awesome ;) Congratulations to you and your family, like the Friendfeed t-shirt ;)
- Mario Olckers
Tiny... little... eentsy... lumps of yum. There, my estrogen has officially shown itself.
- Carla Thompson
No way - they have FF onesies??? How do I get my hands on one of those?
- Jesse Stay
The Gray family Babies!!!! Sarah and Mathew look sooo cute in your arms! and sooo tiny my goodness!!... still LOL @ Rob's wacky comment..whoa!
- Susan Beebe
its the only way I can do that damn site. 12 seconds isnt enough!
- chris barraud
12 seconds just is not worth the effort!!!
- Dave Gray
that what I thought but I was surprised by the number of people who still use it. So I'm giving it a 2 week trial. Half way into it and I kinda like it...
- chris barraud
You can actually do quite a bit with 12seonds, it's a good challenge. Check out cocktails http://12seconds.tv/channel... Also, how can you say that about 12seconds when you only get 140chars a tweet on twitter? It's video twitter.
- jjprojects
Can you tell that I quite like it? :P
- jjprojects
ok, good point but I don't put that much effort into Twitter so why would I put that much effort into 12 seconds? OK, I probably spend 10 mins editing my video but those cocktail videos would have taken a lot longer to film and edit. If I wanted to spend that much time making a movie, I'd stick it on youtube. Nonetheless, I think I am gonna keep on using 12secs after my 14 days is up.
- chris barraud
Yeah, I think 12secs is best for quick webcam comments and quick mobile cam vids, no editing.
- jjprojects
Very cool Zee thanks for sharing - awesome to think how far we have come. When I first started surfing the net it was with 28k modems. Even the slower fax speed ones - was that 1400?? Anyway been a wild ride to my 8MB/sec connection that I now enjoy. This makes me appreciate it all the more.
- Dave Gray
Wow! 1964! My first BBS was on a 1200baud modem in about 1981. My brother & I ran it, hoping people would upload games! (They did! we're were stoked!) -We about freaked when our dad came home with a 2400 baud modem (twice as fast! - the old man would NEVER get his home office back! - but us young geeks couldn't understand why the synchronous 4800 baud modem wouldn't work! ). BBSing was my first social media. Our first global email was in 1983. Thanks Zee!
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Connecting to BBS's was a real treat. I remember sharing pics, games, and applications while connecting with my Hayes and then USR modems. Working out the protocols for V32 and the command sets so that I could connect at maximum speed. Being disappointed when it fell back to 2400 baud due to noisy lines or some other reason. Tying up the phone lines and having the spouse mad that it was...

If you look at the images and ignore the arms paying attention to the body though Phelps (except for his arms) is actually in front. His arms are moving though and the other swimmers arms are just pointed forward gliding. It would be interesting to see high speed footage of the next few frames -- the ones between this and the touch (if they exist)
- Brian Sullivan
great photo finish.. i remember that he is the left one so fantastic finish for him :)
- Alp Çoker
is there a hi-res super-slow-motion video of this scene?
- Goktug Gedik
Seems like the key information is between slides 4/8 and 5/8, rendering this frame-by-frame slightly silly. I'm also gonna quibble over the size of SI.com's top banner, forcing me to scroll down with each click. What I do like however is Phelps' arm-speed and rate of approach, awesome final push.
- Marko Bon
Unbelivable. And thanks for that gif paisano.
- Roberto Bonini
Brian, good point. I have seen the photos a few times now and didn't notice how far ahead Phelps was until you pointed out to look at their bodies. I was always focused on their hands.
- Mike Boudreaux
from fftogo
this is a case where traditional photo journalism would be improved with more tech.... the GIF animation is terrific; just wish it could have been done by the folks with access to the super hi-speed images. thx paisano! (& I am Italian ;)
- dave mcclure
Agree Dave. Wondered why they didn't create a high-quality animated gif themselves. It's easy to do and take no time at all. Heck, they could even make it more fun like allow us to zoom in and around the swimmers to view it from different angles...top, side then underneath. heh
- paisano
from twhirl
Since there are over 24 frames per second even in ordinary video film, and far more than that in high motion film, we certainly could have used a few more images. Although, this is impressive and his last half stroke effort, amazing.
- iSteeve
24 fps gives a picture every .04 seconds or so -- the margin of victory was .001 wasn't it? So we may actually be seing the 24 fps frames here. I am not sure about high speed cameras -- what is the fps for them -- were they actually active and is footage available?
- Brian Sullivan
I used Tivo to slow this down on Saturday and was amazed at how close the finish was. What's even more amazing to me is how little NBC used the underwater cameras they had installed. I would have liked to have seen more footage from below the water - the little that they did use really illustrated the differences in technique used.
- Al Stevens
lol lou. : ) like two too. ; ) see "you" - I really want to sleep. : ) But it is not impossible with great cool people around "You". ; )
- Erhan Erdogan
Agreed, interface is not that great and is way too much hard work in general. I hate the kama aspect, I just don't have time to get more... they lost me. But I have FF :)
- Dave Gray
Has for me. And I'm with Dave: Karma is annoying
- Didi Chanoch
Twitter and Friendfeed's graphs both show downward trending as well...
- Dan Shust
have you guys thought of ditching twitter and developing the micro blogging side of FriendFeed... but seriously good that it monitors the api - but it would be great to have some sort of warning that your close to exceeding the api calls or something. And I think it is crap that we have to get clients that take into account a services inability to scale and be of use to it's users. My...

I think the FF UI on Twhirl is brutally hard to use. Way too much information and formatting Love the tweet UI, tho!
- Clay Newton
thank god. back to twhirl for me. No more using that darn website.
- mike
from twhirl
have you fixed the UI so you no longer have to hit "cancel" to close the preferences window? just a little "x" will do...
- Jeremy Toeman
thanks all. Clay, thanks for your feedback, how would you enhance the FF Twhirl UI? Jeremy let me check this one.
- Loic Le Meur
i have multiple twitter accts (open simultaneously in twhirl) and I thought last release would fix limit exceed problem...has that been resolved? also, why does twhirl always load very old direct messages first?
- Pokai
Good video. I'm buying one in the UK because it does everything I want except video (although hopefully Qik will come to the app store if the SDK allows it to work on non-jailbroken phones). I'll probably get a Flip or similar to cover the video side of things anyway.
- Martin Bryant
Thx Martin. I think video should happen, there's a video app for the 2G if you've got it hacked, no streaming, but it proves that it can be done
- Duncan Riley
good video - we should do some debates sometime - would be cool
- Allen Stern
The jailbreak video app works quite well - great compression rate / file sizes.
- Patrick Jordan
Nice perspective - but I am not getting an iPhone - the area im which I live doesn't have a 3G network... so it would be a fancy phone... but that is about it... Oh, and they need to get the flash support sorted

Good video. I'll be lining up on the 11th ...

We're doing the EXACT same thing here in Japan Duncan. July 11th... sleeping bagging it outside of Softbank stores in Tokyo, Nagoya, all over. Check out our progress as we'll be reporting it at http://www.iphoneinjapan.com

second that. i only have Twitter and bright kite on FF but i'm thinking of narrowing it to one
- Mona Nomura
I have Twitter, Pownce, Plurk and Brightkite. Nobody wants to see the same message more than once here.
- jjprojects
I'd love a pie and peas right now thanks :)
- jjprojects
....that's why I don't use ping.fm, socialthing, etc =\
- Mona Nomura
JJ, I've found the need to mix them up, I also don't import everything everywhere as well
- Duncan Riley
I was fretting about that the other day. I've already unplugged SU. I think I'm going to cut it down to only the sites on which i originate content, plus de.licio.us, Google shares, and YouTube.
- Chris Baskind
I crosspost on Twitter, Pownce, and Jaiku (using Twhirl) but only feed Twitter into FF.
- Leo Laporte
Was this a microblogging presence baiting trick post? :D
- Mark Forman
smart... which ones are you excluding - specifically? if identi.ca is added... no change right?
- Susan Beebe
Duncan, that's what I've been thinking too. When I want to be very informal, I'll post to plurk, when I want to share files I should do it on Pownce or plurk. Sometimes it's hard to decide. I think 2 is ok, but anymore than that becomes spam for subscribers really.
- jjprojects
I'm using FF - loving it - it is plurk'ish in the replies but far more content generated. But the conversations with "share something" posts are awesome. I am sold - if I could migrate everything - including the community it would be FF
- Dave Gray
from twhirl
Just disconnected Disqus, Reddit, and Digg.
- Chris Baskind
Here is my quandry - I use twitterfeed to add blog and tumblog posts to Twitter but I have both those feeding FF as well. I also have unique status updates on Twitter. Should I disable the Twitter-to-FF updates? Or just depend on folks to block my Twitter content?
- Keith - @tsudo
I have FF as my inbox and ping.fm as my outbox. So when I have something to say then I shout it on all my SNS via ping.fm. If someone has something to say to me then I check my twitter replies, FF, occasionally I check Plurk. I am also using a greasemonky script that has created a group of people I usually am interested in what they have to say. Another script allows me to filter via service on FF so that I can keep everything plugged into my FF.
- dedlam
Actually now that I think about it, without the greasemonkey scripts, FF turns into a dogs breakfast
- dedlam
tsudohimh, Yes you can get a kind of a loop going with these things. I don't really use auto-updaters for this reason. I do crosspost image from Brightkite to twitter which both feed into ff. I should fix that I think. There's a certain amount of duplication that's unavoidable I guess if you want to crosspost at all.
- jjprojects
Dedric, I've been taking the update all approach for a while, up until now. I realise it doesn't make for a good aggregation here, I think.
- jjprojects
yes as I recall the Matrix was filmed in Australia (whatever the frack that means)....
- Mark Forman
Dave, yes Plurk seems to be more for very casual conversation, which is good I think. If the same sort of conversations were going on in each network, there would be no reason to use all of them.
- jjprojects
Mark, are you saying we in Australia invent and control reality? Yes, absolutely :)

- Richard Moriarty
from twhirl
at first we were saying twitter was the one to beat - they were there first - had the community etc... but that was if they could scale which they have failed at - big time. Now I am thinking that FF might have the momentum and certainly what appears to be the stability, Now it is a question of community and I think that is building.
- Dave Gray
from twhirl
Whatever happes, it's clear that the whole micro enterprise is a winner, including multimedia too - image, video, sound etc
- jjprojects
Open Source will change the game... can't wait for the identi.ca offshoots
- Cait
Yeah, for sure. Some have been saying twitter should have gone down that route.
- jjprojects
I don't think there are any winners at this point in time. IMHO I don't think that plurk has the legs - I think that ppl will get pissed off with it. Identi.ca - I think that the open source might see some interesting developments. FF - yup I think they have something... what are they going to do with it? twitter - still need to get their shit together before they loose everyone... I agree that the micro blog is great and has a future. What that is is anyone's guess at this point
- Dave Gray
from twhirl
Dave, why not skip Twitter entirely. With FriendFeed you can choose a cool graphic to go with your link. You can't do that with Twitter. Really FF is a superior platform.
- Thomas Hawk
I actually prefer to post links on Friendfeed. On Friendfeed, I don't have to use a URL shortener.
- Morton Fox
jump to the end: post to FF first. these days it seems you'd be right more often than you are not...
- Russell Holliman
Thomas it's the people. There are a lot of people who use Twitter who don't use FF. It's only geeks here near as I can tell. I don't think the people here are all that interested in some of the things I'm interested in. And there are a lot more idiot Republicans here. I like intelligent people and there aren't too many smart folk who are willing to admit to being Republican these days. So you're pretty much left with the slimedogs. Present company excepted of course. :-)
- Dave Winer
I'd go FF first. Most conversations of value based on the link will happen here anyway.
- Duncan Riley
I'm using FF differently than Twitter. I follow many fewer here and am being followed by many fewer. I like the intimacy, talking mostly with people I actually know in most cases. At Twitter I have many followers and use it to get more viewership of a new blog post.
- shelisrael1
You can always post on twitter first, and import it in ff.
- Jacob
why would you want to post to twitter directly?
- Sean Savage
Duncan and Thomas have it right. You always have the option of using Twitter but participating in Friendfeed returns more. I use both as many do (but hide and just occasionally look at the Twitter posts to avoid overload). It's getting better each week. Simply a matter of how YOU choose to set it up.
- Charlie Anzman
I have advanced degrees and an IQ of 135; I've been a highly successful educator at both the secondary and collegiate levels. But because I identify with the Republican party, I'm an idiot according to Dave Winer.
- Gregory Pittman
from fftogo
Gregory... That extra 4 points I have on you in the IQ stakes must be the part that accounts for sarcasm, humor and the ability to know that generalisations are rarely accurate...
- Johnny Worthington
@John - or the part that does reading comprehension, since Gregory obviously failed to parse "a lot more", "not too many", and "pretty much".
- Jeremy Raines
watch out, this policy made me fell in-love with FriendFeed...
- Orli Yakuel
Cool. That way Twitter can stay up. ;-)
- Vic Podcaster
idiot republicans? slimedogs? Even though I'm a democrat I find broad sweeping statements like that to be problematic. I'd like to think that I'm more open minded than that. I also think that politics are not the only thing to talk about in the world and think that gauging someone's intelligence or the value of their conversation by their political party affiliation is, well, pretty idiotic.
- Thomas Hawk
Getting back to the subject, why not start posting here first anyway?
- David Weiner
Thomas is one of an ever-decreasing number of people from all points of the political spectrum for whom disagreement on issues doesn't degrade to personal attacks. Thomas and I might disagree on what the problems are and what the solutions to those problems are, but we would be able to have a valuable conversation. I appreciate that very much.
- Gregory Pittman
it's funny how Americans can feel in their stomach being part of Rep or Dems, when the whole world knows deep in their stomach that there is not a glinch that diferentiate both parties a part from the color of the tie, i'm not saying we are better in Europe or elsewhere, i'm saying we're all screwed,
- Ben Borges
@Ben yeah democracy sucks that way... naturally breeds moderate points of view
- Rubin Sfadj
Good policy! I'm starting to followthat too.
- Shannon Low
from twhirl
is it still democracy ? i'v seen bush with a "christian cruz" on his back while speaking on tv, (terrorist) for me it's middle age democracy.
- Ben Borges
I am trying to do this too, but my friends aren't actively using FF yet.
- Michelle Lentz
Starting on FriendFeed today. Put me down as an AFTU (Another Frustrated Twitter User).
- Michael E. Rubin
that's been my policy of late...i can't even follow ppl on twitter today
- Sarah Perez
I actually prefer to use Twitter for less important messages and FriendFeed for stuff when I want to generate conversation. The idea behind my logic is that some people, to reduce the noise, block all tweets, as they consider tweets less important. I agree with these folk, so I use Twitter for stuff that they're probably not interested in.

I never understood those who would sit so close to the front of the room, and then so visibly sleep. Did they think sitting close would wake them up or overcome their fatigue?
- Louis Gray
Did you know you could share pics, links and text on FriendFreed using Twhirl? Try it and let us know what you think, we are working hard to have the best client experience, suggestions welcome!
Suggestion #1. Release a version that merges Twitter and FriendFeed in a single window. All other features should be held off until this has been completed.
- Mark Krynsky
Am I the only one who thinks they shouldn't be merged. I like keeping them distinct
- Deepak Singh
@Deepak, if done elegantly I think you'd be ok. For instance, a toggle button to swtich from either service would be nice. The challenge on a merge is that I follow folks on Twitter that don't have FF accounts and conversely I follow users on FF who I don't on Twitter. So handling the Tweets from these 2 types of users may be a bit challenging.
- Mark Krynsky
with the comment about merging Friend Feed and Twitter... although have AlertThingy already!
- Laura Whitehead
from twhirl
I like Twhirl but I can't use it because it won't remember my login info, every time I load it I have to enter everything again.I have uninstalled and reinstalled 10 times and no luck. I posted something on getsatisfaction.com and no answer.
- Kelly Johns
I think they should remain separate, too. I'm not enough of a fan of FriendFeed to want them merged. However, I would like a way to keep tweets of people I follow on Twitter from appearing in the FriendFeed window. Right now, I see the tweets twice; once in each window.
- Gregory Pittman
It should show you entries from the last time you started it only, so I don't re-read old posts.
- Ranjit Mathoda
I second the request for a status-aware version that only shows new entries. No need to re-read old tweets. And **please** keep twitter separate, or at least enable an option to keep twitter/friendfeed separate.
- Kevin Donahue
I like the fact that I can keep twitter/ff separate, but an option to combine them would be nice. Plus, right now commenting on FF works much better in alertthingy.
- Will Johnston
from Alert Thingy
having both open in twhirl is pretty much awesome (when they are both up)
- Chris Jones
from twhirl
Merging would be great, but only if it would automatically de-dupe at the same time.
- Chuck Lawson
I prefer them merged in one window. Agree comments are easier in Alert Thingy.
- Sally Church
Thanks for asking Loic! I too like the idea of merging, but add the *option* of having 2 windows merged into 1, but maintain current functionality (let folks choose this). DeDuping would be a must for the merged option. Alternately have 1 window with 2 TABS - for twitter or friendfeed.
- Susan Beebe
Loic, now if only it didn't have two screens.....
- Duncan Riley
I with you would allow for scrolling within a post to get to more comments when they are over a page long
- Sweyn Venderbush
I am not sure about the merged window. I like being able to keep the streams separate. FF would push twitter content offscreen too fast. As an option? Sure. What I DO want is an option to reply to FF about a tweet right from the twitter stream
- Soulhuntre
For one it would be great if it didn't delete my FF post while I'm writing when it updates. I prefer the separate windows as well over a merged one. Tabs could work but only up to a point. My suggestion is to use some contextual UI that could include having just one single window with an update bar to show the user which services have new entries. The user could then click on the items...

- Devlin Dunsmore
from twhirl
Perhaps the update bar could show/hide itself only either when it has updates or when the user mouses over a particular part of the window. That way the navigation is only temporary but reveals itself either on demand or when it is relevant to the user.

I'm not a fan of Thwirl's UI. Too much clutter. Who came up with the color scheme? Click targets (buttons) are too small.

I have yet to find a FF client which I feel comfortable with. Although twhirl is a cool application, it just does not provide the same experience as visiting the FF web site. Maybe the interface is too busy compared to the FF web interface?
- Scott Jarkoff
I love the picture idea, and I don't have much use for FriendFeed features quite yet, although if you want the bleeding edge adopter love, that would be the way to go. But yeah, personally I'd like to see more ways you could allow people to connect with content other than text. And if you could get video in there...whoa.
- Justin Gardner
did not know you could do this. Cool for a quick share. But for adding video - do that to FeedFriend via seesmic or YouTube, Images - do that via flickr. Feed your existing services into it and take advantage of the "quick" features like commenting etc in FeedFriend. Otherwise the echo is going to get too loud. Nice idea - like it.
