Alex, I really liked reading your post and it certainly made me think a lot about FB's moves....but, I take a different stand on the issue. I think it's a smart "macro" strategy for Facebook to aggresively integrate Twitteresque features, WHILE staying true to what they do best....here's something I posted about it yesterday.. http://bit.ly/11Lpu3
- TedBailey
I suspect I would have preferred whichever one I saw first. The sheer audacity and originality is missing from the second viewing. I, of course, saw the Gene Wilder version first and prefer it.
- DGentry
everything's too safe in the new movie. the original, you never quite know if those kids are okay or not. and whats with the daddy issues in the new film?? must be a burton thing..
- Terry O'Fee
i havent seen the johnny depp one but i heard it sucked. i also noticed they cloned the umpa lumpas
- Alfredo 亜瑠布れっど
The new one didn't really suck, it was just extraneous.
- iTad
the music and design is wonderful. it just can't top the absolute insanity of the original.
- Terry O'Fee
i heard it was Psychedelic. like speed racer if you catch my drift
- Alfredo 亜瑠布れっど
watch the boat scene on youtube. it shows you the madness of it all :)
- Terry O'Fee
Is this a thing about which there is a question? I actually didn't hate the Burton one; Depp had an interesting take on Wonka (which I know a lot of people hated, but I kinda liked that he took it a totally different direction). But I did hate the stupid amount of back story they added.
- Jandy
I would also like to add that when i heard a new wonka movie was going to come out, I thought it was going to be the next book in the series. Are they going to make those?
- Alfredo 亜瑠布れっど
god i hope not. i'm still not happy they're making a hitchhikers guide new book...
- Terry O'Fee
They'd probably have that dreadful-looking Keira Knightley or even worse Scarlett Johannson as Buttercup. *cringe*
- Anika
I much prefer Gene Wilder's take on Wonka, but I dig the art direction of the new Wonka a lot more.
- Jonathan Hardesty
I'd argue that Depp's Wonka is just a more flamboyant version of Ed Wood and not all that original of a portrayal. But that's just my two cents.
- Jonathan Hardesty
that's funny Jonathan - I thought Depp's Wonka was "just a more flamboyant version of Ed Wood" too. totally didn't work for me.
- jbrotherlove
Wilder is not an act you want to follow, so yeah, the original wins the day. That said, though uneven, I still enjoyed the new one in and of itself.
- Micah
I won't choose between the two because I grew up on and am completely in love with the first film and I think that automatically colors me against the newer one. Plus I adore Tim Burton and that puts me at total odds with myself. At any rate, I think Gene Wilder played Wonka exactly as he should have been played. Depp's Wonka was a little too...creepy. In the book Wonka was just a...

Plus I do a killer spot-on impersonation of Veruca Salt from the original film. :D Song and all.

Ah, just what every person needs. More Willy in their feed...
- Hookuh Tinypants
WRONG, sir, WRONG! Actually I agree. I just like shouting that sometimes.
- Josh Haley
Mumbler! Seriously, I cannot understand a single word you're saying!
- joey
No one bets the original. Better Movie Better Wonka!
- John Flynn
I enjoyed the Depp version, but there is no doubt in the universe that Gene Wilder is a genius and his Wonka is the gold standard. Also, the original movie itself is pretty much perfect.
- Bob M. Montgomery
My English teacher last year looked like Gene Wilder..probably why I prefer the Johnny Depp version. Having Willy Wonka assign research papers= not a fun time.
- Colette
It could be fun to suggest to your friends what you think would be "cool" for them...ie; fit with their "mojo"....it could at least be a form of entertainment and other friends could socially vote on if they thought the suggestion was good?
- TedBailey
If there is one word that describes someone who sees, recognizes and shares the big picture I don't happen to know what it is. THAT is what Louis does and extremely well I might add.
- Gail Gardner
Seems very true. I have a twitter account and have some followers but don't have the time or the internet clout to be very effective. Friendfeed to me seems easier to interact and participate in discussions.
- Zach Scott
I like this article. But, I think that (in a way) the fact that Twitter is very "the more you put in the more you get out" makes it more compelling. I really like how Twitter feels like an ongoing process of actively bettering the utility at your hands. I understand the ease of Google for quick and effective search. But I think the "fun" of engaging in Twitter to increase its usefullness is a strength; a part "game-like" utlity that only gets more exciting (and effecitive) the more you play around with it
- TedBailey
A further point about the disparity - Louis is a popular social media guy and there are more comments and likes on felix's post here than there are on the same item in felix's own feed. I don't even subscribe to louis but I do to felix, and yet because of the likes and comments, Louis's posting was at the top of my feed, while the entry from felix's own feed was off the page and I had to actually do a search just to like it.
- Robin Barooah
So despite the fact that we are benefitting from felix's writing, more Kudos are accruing to Louis as far as the mechanics of FriendFeed are concerned. There's a 'rich-get-richer' effect. Not to suggest that these dynamics are any different from the rest of society, or that Louis or the other popular social media figures are doing anything wrong. I just find it interesting that the architecture of FriendFeed seems to disproportionately reward filtering behavior as opposed to original contribution.
- Robin Barooah
yo're completely right, Robert! Can't have friendfeed page opened and work at the same time...
- Marco Castellani
LOL - crazy, I had to turn your feed off. Will have to learn more about filters because I don't want to unfollow either.
- James Hull
Well, there was that popular study that came out this week saying that "fun" internet surfing at work made people MORE productive. (even though it was a distraction.) Maybe, watching real-time information snacks for extended periods of time stimulates a part of the brain that makes it easier to focus later in the day? But then again, Maybe not :)
- TedBailey
Wow, I've looked at your friendfeed you pointed at...it's going fast at your side indeed. At the moment for me it's an easy to keep up with screen, but that's mainly because I do not follow that many people (yet :P), hehe
- Sanne Buurma
I actually really like this. I think giving a FB contact credits is a great way to publicly show that you appreciate their thoughts in a way that is especially meaningfull (ie; you paid). It's also kinda like throwing a quarter in the hat of the guy who plays amazing drums on the street....it's fun to do.
- TedBailey
Liking an update is enough for me as how desperate and creepy would it seem someone giving you credits!
- Joe Dawson
I wouldn't pay cash for Facebook anything myself.
- Ian May
Wasn't TipJoy or something like that trying to achieve a similar thing, a while ago?
- Tyson Key
Tipjoy still makes widgets to something similar, in a federated fashion across the internet. We've found more success with payments over twitter, have opened up an API for them http://tipjoy.com/api , and are evolving into a general purpose payments engine. We really like Facebook's approach.
- Ivan Kirigin
This is very interesting -- "attention" is a limited resource, which is why people are more picky about Twitter followers. Another friend on Facebook doesn't really cost you anything (especially if you stick them in a Feed category that you don't watch)... interesting to think about how the platform's software architecture guides the types of relationships that are fostered....
- TedBailey
Good point, Ted, about the architecture. I think people grossly underestimate how much function follows form.
- Rebecca Lasley
I disagree with the premise. They were both created for very different purposes and are used for differences. Facebook, as a network is far safer than twitter for the simple reason that facebook is about nohing but real life friends for an entire generation of people. It's only those above a certain age that see it as somewhere for strangers to be-friended. Most youths only add friends. They have no interest in online friends, especially on FB.
