Third Tuesday

Canada's social media meetups
Joseph Thornley
Ilya, Melle and Jim from AideRSS are prepared to speak at the December Third Tuesday Toronto. A discussion of PostRank, how it works; how AideRSS is developing a community & where they go from here. What do you think?
Great session, folks! Thanks to Dave Fleet for a great (first time?) moderating. Kudos all 'round. - Connie Crosby
Joseph Thornley
Malcolm Bastien has suggested we invite Evan Prodromou, the originator of identi.ca, to talk about the motivation behind identi.ca and what's been happening since it launched. What do you think?
Yes! - Josh Davey
I am very interested in learning more about identi.ca. Evan has some big plans, and since it is a Canadian product we should at least be knowledgeable about it. - Connie Crosby
Yes! I think a discussion of this, plus Twitter and the whole microblogging space in general would be terrifically interesting. - Michael O'Connor Clarke
I agree with all of the above. I'm also interested continuing the discussion about whether or not microblogging is where all blogging is headed. - Eden Spodek
I think this would be good, especially considering the coverage Twitter and microblogging seems to be getting in mainstream media right now. - Dave Fleet

John Carson has suggested we invite the guys behind http://www.startupnorth.ca/ to speak at Third Tuesday Toronto. Your comments please.
I'm having a look through the start-ups indexed by startupnorth. I'm thinking they would be interesting to hear from--both perhaps from the point of view of startupnorth, and with regard to what is happening with startups in Canada. - Connie Crosby
I like the StartupNorth guys - smart, interesting chaps. I enjoy reading the blog too. Wondering what the topic of this session would be, though? We'd need to make sure we offer something relevant to a social media/PR/digital marketing crowd. Did John have any thoughs on what Jonas and Jevon could talk about? - Michael O'Connor Clarke

Dave Fleet has suggested a Third Tuesday topic and speakers: "a panel of CNW/Marketwire/other experts discussing the SMR and how it affects their business." What do you think?
i wonder if the SMR is too specific. It's one tool in the box for approaching news dissemination in today's media environment. Perhaps a broader discussion about how we're doing PR differently in the age of SMR's, Twitter, Blogs, Podcasts, YouTube, etc. - David Jones
I really like this idea. The timing is right given the recent launch and I think it's a compelling change in the industry at a pretty mass level that creates intrigue. I think this also has enough weight that you could reach out to a growing audience of professionals who maybe aren't yet completely in the loop with social media but are starting to see the importance of learning. It's a familiarity that will allow people to get comfortable crossing over. Very smart. - Jacquelyn Corbett Cyr
Although I might be a bit biased (CNW employee here) I like the idea of a panel of people discussing the SMR. However, I think the panel should also include someone from the blogging/journalism side of the fence that SMRs are intended to reach. - Parker Mason
David - I thought about that too, but thinking about the audience (generally social media-savvy) I wonder if there's much that people would get out of a broader discussion like that. - Dave Fleet
As a former CNW employee, I, too, am biased. But I agree with Parker - get a voice from the media side. - Bonnie Dean
I would be interested. As a blogger I am still getting lots of traditional press releases sent to me, and have yet to see an SMR sent. Even though the concept is familiar to some of us, there are a lot who don't know about them yet. - Connie Crosby
I think Parker is on to something. We can talk about SMRs all day but we need to know what value, if any, they provide to journalists and bloggers. Maybe we could get someone like Mathew Ingram to participate. He may be able to shed some light on this from the perspective of a blogger/journalist. - Eden Spodek
Mat wrote a post about it some time ago. http://www.mathewingram.com/work... - David Jones

The people behind the Sixent social networking platform are willing to do the Third Tuesday Ottawa season opener. Sixent is being developed by Ottawa-based Ramius. Does this sound like a good way to start off the Ottawa season?
Joseph Thornley
Third Tuesday Toronto will kick off the season with AideRSS on September 16. http://publicrelations.meetup.com/85...
Joseph Thornley
Joe Boughner has suggested that we invite some of the participants from GovCamp to talk at the Third Tuesday Ottawa season opener. What do you think?
I've spoken with Colin McKay - and he's up for this. I'd suggest we schedule this topic for November. By then, we should know the outcome of the election and a new government should be in place. Our discussion then can be forward looking and prescriptive. - Joseph Thornley

We have a chance to book Carol Leaman and the AideRSS team for Third Tuesday. I'd really like to hear them talk about the progress of their startup; PostRank and how it works; and how Melanie Baker is approaching the community manager role. What do you think? Would this be a good season opener?
I feel like the perpetual optimist here, but I'd say a big yes again. I've been very impressed with their tool and their customer service. I'd love to hear from them about how they've gone about launching and building their startup and their plans for the future. - Dave Fleet
I'm very interested in hearing from the AideRSS team. I wonder it has broad-enough appeal for a season opener. - Eden Spodek
Agreed with all. I'd love to learn more about this tool from many perspectives. - Rayanne Langdon
Absolutely. This would be a great season opener. - Michael O'Connor Clarke
Let me join the chorus of YESes. - Donna Papacosta

Third Tuesday is gearing up for the autumn season. Who would you like to hear talking about what topics?
I would love to see a repeat of Collin Mackay's Ottawa session about the process behind the Privacy Commissioner's blog. Joe's post on it at the time was excellent - I think people would get a lot of value from his case study. - Dave Fleet
Hey there Joe, don't exactly know how to pull this off but what if we had a cross-country video based Third Tuesday with all of the various cities (projected on screens in each location with webcams capturing crowd) We could have some speakers in a central location to kick it off (like Tdot) and then have a second speaker or breakouts in the rest of the locations after the "keynote". Could be neat. We sorta did this with Brogan live on webcam from SNCR to the Fredericton one. People liked it. - David Alston
I really like David's idea of connecting all the Third Tuesday events together. I was in Halifax last month and they have a regular event called Third Thursday. What do people think about asking them to connect? Third Thursday is their first attempt at gathering people with similar interests from Halifax and surrounding areas. - Eden Spodek
Neat idea David. I like the idea of pushing the technology to bring people together in one virtual space at one time. Can the folks who organized the Fredericton event help us to work out how we might do this? - Joseph Thornley
Intriguing idea - for the new year, perhaps? Montreal has Sept, Oct and Nov booked (and don't expect anyone to show up for the 3rd Tuesday of December:) Keep us posted! - Michelle Sullivan
I like the idea of cross-country video, I'm worried that working out the time differences for something like this might make an evening session difficult. - Parker Mason

If you came here after reading my blog post about the Third Tuesday FriendFeed Room, leave a comment below telling us what you'd like to get out of Third Tuesday. - Joseph Thornley from Bookmarklet
Cool use of FriendFeed, Joe. I'd like to see some speakers who aren't from Toronto or who don't often come to Toronto. Maybe we could set up some sort of "speaker exchange" program with the other Third Tuesday cities. - Parker Mason
To David's point below - having the idea of "breakout sessions" after the inital speaker would be a great idea - would allow for more in depth conversation about the topic, would encourage participation and is a great way for people to meet/introduce/catch-up with each other. - Chrissy

We don't really need more places demanding attention. However, I've set up this room to see if it's a good place for us to share, discuss and collaborate about social media.
