If Twitter continues the overhyped direction it's headed, soon, it'll be a community filled with marketers and celebrities with megaphones
I agree, the spammers and marketers (I'm an Affiliate but do not use Twitter for business as a rule) are poised to mess up a good thing. Why do the best and purest forms of communication always get sullied by greedy, careless people? - Nicholas Chase
how so? Your twitterverse is limited to who you follow/what you search for. No one can market to you unless you opt in to follow. - Sameer
It is very much this way now. - Louis Gray
Unless they upgrade the hardware it is going to crash soon. Slow and too many fail whales. - Steven Kent
OP: "soon"? - Carlos Ayala
Good question...is what's happening a great awareness wave for the general public? Or a cementing of Twitter's reputation as people broadcasting without value? I'm going with the former on this one. - Hutch Carpenter
I agree with Sameer. Just don't follow people you don't want to follow. Unless you are thinking that it will be a put-off to other people. - Mark Chandler
Twitter: a community filled with marketers, 'life coaches' and celebrities with megaphones. That ship has already sailed. - AJ Kohn
+1 AJ! - .LAG liked that
+1 Sameer! - Atul Arora
I can't imagine how FF could handle noisy marketers. It's much more about conversation here, they would be taken out more easily, wouldn't they? - Jérôme Flipo
I'll third Sameer and Mark. The beauty of twitter is that you shape your own community. I follow one celebrity, because I actually enjoy his tweets. But it doesn't bother me or reduce the value I get out of twitter when people I'm not connected to use it differently than I. - Jeremy Schultz
@Jerome: Yes. Crowdblocking happens *very* quickly on FF. And I believe (hello FF employees) that once a certain number of blocks are initiated the FF daemon comes along and gobbles them up. - AJ Kohn
Soon? - Alex Scoble
The only way in which Twitter hype can hurt Twitter is in Twitter's responsiveness. For all else, Twitter - like FriendFeed - is much as with blogs. Everyone chooses his own subscriptions. And everyone figures out their own way to use their 140 char text-box. - Meryn Stol
it's still opt-in..filters baby, filters - George Dearing
I completely disagree with the idea that how others use Twitter doesn't impact your own usage. If someone you follow starts to follow more and more people then their ability to interact with you diminishes. The social connection between you two disappears. That's if you still rely on Twitter for interaction (which I think many do, though I certainly don't.) So, sure you can unfollow that person, but an environment where quantity seems highly valued will reduce your ability to converse. - AJ Kohn
And Friendfeed and Facebook is somehow immune to this;-)? - Brandon Mendelson
Already is - andy brudtkuhl
As far as Sameer's point goes... I don't want to follow Oprah - thus I'm not opting in. BUT if anyone I follow talks to her then I am pulled into her twitterverse. So it's not 100% opt-in - andy brudtkuhl
"...filled with marketers and celebrities with megaphones." And of course about 3 million people clueless as to how to handle all the noise. - Tim
Andy, that's when lists should come on stage to put the noise backstage. Friendfeed to rescue you. - Jérôme Flipo
ok, so it's not 100% opt-in..so what..being pulled into Oprah's twitterverse thru someone else would be a problem mostly for newbies coming to twitter..they don't follow that many ppl so their stream would be easy to overtake. You have to spend some time tuning your network..it gets noisy sometime but so does the real world. - George Dearing
@George - that's why they need groups and filters! .... sounds like another service... hmmm oh, ya .. FriendFeed! - andy brudtkuhl
Andy: not really. They have 3rd party clients for that. - Matsis
Does this guy even use Friendfeed or does he just feed out his Tweets to FF? - PC Easy from twhirl
This GUY? Yeah i'm here PC Easy, I do both - Jeremiah Owyang
to be honest, a loud place with people talking over each other in order to get noticed is how both FF and twitter feel, at times. Goes with the follower model - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I agree... a diluted mess. This isn't another channel, it's a conversation. - Drew Lucas
Who was it on FF that said twitter is like a Seinfeld episode where everyone is talking, no one is listening? so funny because it's so true. - Violet Mae Lim
I think it was Bindu Reddy: http://ff.im/2pws5 - Brome
Soon? - Kathy Fitch
marketers as distinct from social media gurus? - Christian Crumlish
isn't this what folks said about the web? all the authentic voices would be drowned out by commerce? did it happen? - Christian Crumlish
Yes, but I think the spammers and others who don't engage with their followers/friends will soon find they're not getting the results they want. We still have the capability of creating the "communities" we want to converse with on Twitter. I'm surprised more celebrities didn't find Twitter earlier, and some of them are doing fund-raising for good causes. We can choose which ones we include in our own conversations. - Cathryn Hrudicka
Isn't it already full with crappy, cheap marketers? - Jorge Escobar
Jorge: It depends who you're following but yes they are already there. - Nicholas James
Blame Ashton, Oprah and Britney. A complete waste of space. - David Eedle
I agree. Saw yesterday that "Twitter Quitters" was trending on Twitter. Let 'em quit. - Rick Cogley
unfollow the marketers & celebs. - tarafireball
It already is! Of all people, I would have thought you would have recognized this long ago! ;-) - Brad Williamson
I seldomly use Twitter anymore due to the noise level. I see more and more advertisers and product spammers. It feels less personal whereas FriendFeed has a better system for that. - imabonehead
It's unfortunately the nature of the beast - greed concurs all. Hell look what it did to the good old USA, then the world. - Brent - Loving Life
Everybody involved in social media is a self-marketer. Besides, Twitter has had the spammers and MLMers since day one. The celebrities are relatively new, but who cares? Therein lies the power of the unfollow button, Twitter's protective shield. - Shéa Bennett
Yes, it will but the beauty of Twitter is that we don't have to follow any of them. We can still make it what WE want. That's the difference. The other stuff will die if it is truly of no value. It always does. We'll be left with something useful. - Michael J. Pratt
You mean, like Facebook...? :-) - John Blossom
People who like the "cool" things are now a little distressed that MSM has discovered Twitter, but its very nature seems to inoculate one from mass media hysteria. Just ignore these folks. The main problem with Twitter is that it's very generic - needs 3rd party apps like FF to really bloom. - John Blossom
I agree it's at a point where newbies have less of a chance of adapting to the culture long-term because of all the noise/spam, but for those of us who have been here for the long haul, things are much the same as they always were. If a contact doesn't bring value, unfollow. - Amie Gillingham
It seems the resounding opinion of FriendFeeders that Twitter Already IS " community filled with marketers and celebrities with megaphones" -And the number of followers I get who have bot-based auto-spams and names like @TheMLMGuy and who have 10,000 followers in their first week prove the FriendFeeders to be correct. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Twitter is a real-time broadcast medium in its essence, with receivers (follow mechanism) that enables people to aggregate their own channels. So it's not surprising that it attracts MSM and MSM marketers. There's a place for broadcast - and, like, CB radios, a broadcast medium can support very focused and highly scalable conversations also. - John Blossom

YHOO stock up 12%. CNBC reporting rumors that MSFT will make another offer.
Not surprising - won't be at $33 I'm guessing. - Hutch Carpenter
Jeez, will these two just get a room already. - AJ Kohn
definitely wouldn't be at $33. It hit a new low of $11.37 earlier this morning before Ballmer made public remarks that a Yahoo deal would "make sense" economically. - Thomas Hawk
I wonder if MSFT would keep Jerry's "everybody wear purple campaign" or if they'd scrap that? - Thomas Hawk
MSFT has to do something, as their consumer confidence is very low allowing others to take the lead. - Justin Rasmussen from Alert Thingy
Jim Goldman reporting on it now. - Thomas Hawk
CNBC: Yahoo shares have lost $20 billion in market cap since negotiations broke down -- down 40% in the last few months. Goldman suggesting, $13, $14 or $15 per share offer. MSFT has a lot more currency to go after Yahoo now -- could do an all cash deal for less than $20 billion. - Thomas Hawk

People are mad at the excessive compensation from the Wall Street CEOs that drove their companies into the ground, but Terry Semel, Yahoo's CEO, was the highest paid CEO in America in 2006 and all in fleeced Yahoo shareholders over $500 million during his tenure. - Thomas Hawk

YouTube to McCain: You Made Your DMCA Bed, Lie in It | Threat Level from Wired.com - http://blog.wired.com/27bstro...
YouTube on Tuesday rebuffed a request from John McCain's presidential campaign to examine fair-use issues more carefully before yanking campaign videos in response to DMCA takedown notices. "Lawyers and judges constantly disagree about what does and does not constitute fair-use," YouTube's general counsel Zahavah Levine wrote in a letter Tuesday. "No number of lawyers could possibly determine with a reasonable level of certainty whether all the videos for which we receive disputed takedown notices qualify as fair-use.""We hope that as a content uploader, you have gained a sense of some of the challenges we face everyday in operating YouTube," she added. Mccainyoutubead The McCain campaign on Monday fired off a letter to YouTube complaining that the company had acted too quickly to take down McCain's videos in response to copyright infringement notices. So. Disney. Let's discuss.
Since my first blogging adventure was in '96 on the geek's slant on visiting/coping/dealing with Disney, I've kinda already been around this institution more than most small and medium sized cities. That said, my wife's family grew up Disney, she worked for Imagineering and frankly, we can answer any and all things Disney-related.... - Eric Rice
I created a usenet group called alt.disney.tech back in the day for the reason that I love the model of design that the Imagineers create. - Eric Rice
Disney is like crack for your inner child :D - Tink *~*~*
Disney is also a wonderful cyberpunk model. It's sci-fi to THE HILT. And well, Walt was kinda a wacko if you really dig into the EPCOT theories. - Eric Rice
I've considered another blog about dealing with the un-disney of disney, in the sense of those that can tolerate it, don't object to it (would like less mouse-up-the-ass: read: did you know you can take a disney trip to peru?), and obsess of the carefully crafted design and efficiency of the parks and infrastructure. - Eric Rice
There's about 23945823084098 more things under the surface re: Disney, hence why I don't tend to talk about it much, as well as, spending an inordinate amount of time photographing as much as the parks as possible (in all countries, save for paris/hong kong) to illustrate the deep textures that exist. - Eric Rice
Anyway, that's my ramble, I kinda wanted to throw it out there since I've been having secret Disney conversations with a few people, because well, that's how you sometimes have to roll at first. :P - Eric Rice
@tink my inner child likes the villains, but my inner urban planner is like ZOMFG TRAFFIC FLOW AND TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE HOW DO THEY DO THAT - Eric Rice
I'll never forget the true, individual genuis behind that brand. Such a great, great mind. Few people are minds like that. - Patricia
I once wrote a paper for school about the Seven Guidelines for Guest Service. Did a "field experiment" to see how many of the CMs I dealt with on a particular trip actually adhered to them. Analyzed the data by basic age, gender, race/ethnicity demographics. Found out that sandwich-generation females performed the most poorly against the Guidelines. Hispanic males performed the best. How's that for Disney geek? - Tink *~*~*
Eric, the Disney Tech Fair was yesterday. The imagineers (and lots of other folks in the company) are coming up with some pretty ridiculous stuff. - Jason Toney
So, will they ever release another non-computer animated feature, I mean real feature not TV animation, into theaters again? - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
my inner misanthrope hates disney. but then i went to disneyland and battled zerg and tried on some mouse ears and well... i kind of like disney now. but don't go telling everybody. - tiffany
@Eric @ CS Techcast, we can only hope! I think actually The Princess & The Frog (set in N'awlins) is hand-drawn, but don't hold me to that. - Tink *~*~*
@Eric Rice, the people moving aspect of Disney is extraordinary. They teach it to other companies too, places you would never suspect of wanting or needing such mad skillz. For instance, they designed the people flow of patients and trained the staff at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Breast Cancer Center in Manhattan. This was early 90s, and I think it was a function of the Disney Institute. - Tink *~*~*
@tiffany heh i kinda want to cater to folks like you (and me)... i mean, the disney cruise for example is amazingly not HOLY SHIT MICKEY everywhere. It's one of the most elegant designs and tasteful implementations that can almost keep you mouse-free. Another reason I like some of Animal Kingdom's retail. - Eric Rice
@eric cs techcast heh yeah i can hope... or at least some appleseed ex machina hybrid of CG and cell - Eric Rice
I have been seriously disappointed in the decline of Epcot and for the love of christ, innoventions. Maybe hire some Tokyo Disney Sea folks to come over and revamp EPCOT? I'd love to see that. - Eric Rice
Future World has been getting lamer and lamer. I don't know what the problem is. Maybe tech turns over so fast, they can't keep the place stocked with good, innovative gadgets. I love sending an electronic postcard home to mom, but not at the risk of having that be the dominant feature of the IBM exhibit! - Tink *~*~*
I haven't been a fan of Disney much since 1) their 80's/90's animated films suck compared to what's been coming out of Japan (art/talent wise there's no comparison...see anything by Miyazaki or watch Akira to see what I'm talking about) and 2) Their handling of laserdiscs was just rotten. They would wait a year after releasing a movie on VHS before releasing it on laserdisc (if they ever did, some movies they didn't release at all). That being said, Pixar is awesome. - Alex Scoble
Cassie loves Disney though. She's planning on going to Disneyland for her bachelorette party. - Alex Scoble
And the IBM feature is closed, as is the Plastic Exhibit. OH HO BUT there's a nice shiny Waste Management truck lol - Eric Rice
I understand marketing, but your right, innoventions is all marketing now, it seems. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
And why in the hell is the wonders of life pavilion STILL CLOSED - Eric Rice
I did some consulting for the Disney two years back, and rarely have I been in a room with more ego and less intelligence. OTOH, I just saw Horton Hears a Who, and I have to admit, I loved it. - Nadine Schaeffer
BTW you guys know Pleasure Island is being closed, right? - Eric Rice
December 2006 was the last time Wonders of Life was open while I was in the parks. Before that, I can't remember. It was during Mousefest. As for PI - Disney made a big mistake when they started allowing folks to walk through instead of around it like days of yore. Next thing you know, people are dragging their kids through there and complaining that folks are *gasp* DRINKING in front of their little darlings. Uh, don't bring your kid where there are bars, and no one will drink in front of them! - Tink *~*~*
Eric @ CS Techcast, The Princess and the Frog is hand-drawn. That said, the market hasn't shown much love for any company doing hand-drawn animation in recent years. - Jason Toney
It appears that a) Disney isn't a drinking crowd and b) they were losing traffic to Universal CityWalk - Eric Rice
I *so* prefer hand-drawn animation. It is so much warmer from my POV. I like Pixar's stories and their visuals are fine for what they are. But they leave me cold. I don't LOVE Woody and Buz and etc. the way I LOVE Mulan, Belle, Peter Pan, etc. - Tink *~*~*
Hunchback. Hugely underrated. <3 Clopin - Eric Rice
@ Eric Rice, they should have found a way to at least preserve the Adventurer's Club. They could have moved it to Animal Kingdom. It would have fit right in! - Tink *~*~*
Put the Adventurers Club on the Cruise Line or yeah, AK would be good. - Eric Rice
And one other bit o' trivia, when my wife and I were in Tokyo, we noticed that Jim Lewis was there... there are no DVC properties/adventures in Japan--- China, yes (four destinations not counting the park)... BTW, the treehouse villas are returning as DVC properties as well (We just added Bay Lake Towers to our plan because the rooms are oh-so sexeh-- hence the obscure Friendfeed post I had the other day that was overly laden with acronyms.) Heh - Eric Rice
'bout time they did something with Treehouse Villas. They were an embarrassment. In Oct 2005, going by them on the boats from POR/POFQ to DTD, there were trees down on their roofs from Hurricane Charley - which struck August 2004! - Tink *~*~*

"Morrison has referred to "All-Star Superman" as "Apollonian" not just in concept but in execution. If drama which aspires to the Apollonian is based on principles of beauty and clarity and perfection, "All-Star Superman" has achieved that goal. In many ways, it's Morrison's most straightforward work, with little of the subtext or layered symbolism he relies upon in his other projects. It's not the complexity of "All-Star Superman" that brings about catharsis, it’s the perfection of its form -- in all of its bright, shining, transcendent Apollonian splendor." - RAPatton
Morrison's "All-Star Superman" is widely considered the best Superman work in a long time - RAPatton
I really dug the series, but it's been a long time since that first issue came out. I'm going to have to re-read the whole thing in one sitting to really appreciate it. I'm still not a fan of Frank Quitely's artwork though. - James Ferguson
I thought Frank Quitely's work suited it perfectly. I liked that Superman wasn't brimming with muscle and that the suit was looser like pajamas. I also liked his Lois. - RAPatton
I dunno. I thought everyone either looked like they were going to throw up or they just smelled something horrible. Plus it's all wiggly. - James Ferguson
