I agree, the spammers and marketers (I'm an Affiliate but do not use Twitter for business as a rule) are poised to mess up a good thing. Why do the best and purest forms of communication always get sullied by greedy, careless people?

I'll third Sameer and Mark. The beauty of twitter is that you shape your own community. I follow one celebrity, because I actually enjoy his tweets. But it doesn't bother me or reduce the value I get out of twitter when people I'm not connected to use it differently than I.

@Jerome: Yes. Crowdblocking happens *very* quickly on FF. And I believe (hello FF employees) that once a certain number of blocks are initiated the FF daemon comes along and gobbles them up.

The only way in which Twitter hype can hurt Twitter is in Twitter's responsiveness. For all else, Twitter - like FriendFeed - is much as with blogs. Everyone chooses his own subscriptions. And everyone figures out their own way to use their 140 char text-box.

I completely disagree with the idea that how others use Twitter doesn't impact your own usage. If someone you follow starts to follow more and more people then their ability to interact with you diminishes. The social connection between you two disappears. That's if you still rely on Twitter for interaction (which I think many do, though I certainly don't.) So, sure you can unfollow that person, but an environment where quantity seems highly valued will reduce your ability to converse.

ok, so it's not 100% opt-in..so what..being pulled into Oprah's twitterverse thru someone else would be a problem mostly for newbies coming to twitter..they don't follow that many ppl so their stream would be easy to overtake. You have to spend some time tuning your network..it gets noisy sometime but so does the real world.

Yes, but I think the spammers and others who don't engage with their followers/friends will soon find they're not getting the results they want. We still have the capability of creating the "communities" we want to converse with on Twitter. I'm surprised more celebrities didn't find Twitter earlier, and some of them are doing fund-raising for good causes. We can choose which ones we include in our own conversations.

I seldomly use Twitter anymore due to the noise level. I see more and more advertisers and product spammers. It feels less personal whereas FriendFeed has a better system for that.

People who like the "cool" things are now a little distressed that MSM has discovered Twitter, but its very nature seems to inoculate one from mass media hysteria. Just ignore these folks. The main problem with Twitter is that it's very generic - needs 3rd party apps like FF to really bloom.

I agree it's at a point where newbies have less of a chance of adapting to the culture long-term because of all the noise/spam, but for those of us who have been here for the long haul, things are much the same as they always were. If a contact doesn't bring value, unfollow.

Twitter is a real-time broadcast medium in its essence, with receivers (follow mechanism) that enables people to aggregate their own channels. So it's not surprising that it attracts MSM and MSM marketers. There's a place for broadcast - and, like, CB radios, a broadcast medium can support very focused and highly scalable conversations also.

Since my first blogging adventure was in '96 on the geek's slant on visiting/coping/dealing with Disney, I've kinda already been around this institution more than most small and medium sized cities. That said, my wife's family grew up Disney, she worked for Imagineering and frankly, we can answer any and all things Disney-related....

I once wrote a paper for school about the Seven Guidelines for Guest Service. Did a "field experiment" to see how many of the CMs I dealt with on a particular trip actually adhered to them. Analyzed the data by basic age, gender, race/ethnicity demographics. Found out that sandwich-generation females performed the most poorly against the Guidelines. Hispanic males performed the best. How's that for Disney geek?

@Eric Rice, the people moving aspect of Disney is extraordinary. They teach it to other companies too, places you would never suspect of wanting or needing such mad skillz. For instance, they designed the people flow of patients and trained the staff at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Breast Cancer Center in Manhattan. This was early 90s, and I think it was a function of the Disney Institute.

It's one of the most elegant designs and tasteful implementations that can almost keep you mouse-free. Another reason I like some of Animal Kingdom's retail.

I have been seriously disappointed in the decline of Epcot and for the love of christ, innoventions. Maybe hire some Tokyo Disney Sea folks to come over and revamp EPCOT? I'd love to see that.

Future World has been getting lamer and lamer. I don't know what the problem is. Maybe tech turns over so fast, they can't keep the place stocked with good, innovative gadgets. I haven't been a fan of Disney much since 1) their 80's/90's animated films suck compared to what's been coming out of Japan (art/talent wise there's no comparison...see anything by Miyazaki or watch Akira to see what I'm talking about) and 2) Their handling of laserdiscs was just rotten. They would wait a year after releasing a movie on VHS before releasing it on laserdisc (if they ever did, some movies they didn't release at all). That being said, Pixar is awesome.

December 2006 was the last time Wonders of Life was open while I was in the parks. Before that, I can't remember. It was during Mousefest. As for PI - Disney made a big mistake when they started allowing folks to walk through instead of around it like days of yore. Next thing you know, people are dragging their kids through there and complaining that folks are *gasp* DRINKING in front of their little darlings. Uh, don't bring your kid where there are bars, and no one will drink in front of them!

I *so* prefer hand-drawn animation. It is so much warmer from my POV. I like Pixar's stories and their visuals are fine for what they are. But they leave me cold. I don't LOVE Woody and Buz and etc. the way I LOVE Mulan, Belle, Peter Pan, etc.

And one other bit o' trivia, when my wife and I were in Tokyo, we noticed that Jim Lewis was there... there are no DVC properties/adventures in Japan--- China, yes (four destinations not counting the park)... BTW, the treehouse villas are returning as DVC properties as well (We just added Bay Lake Towers to our plan because the rooms are oh-so sexeh-- hence the obscure Friendfeed post I had the other day that was overly laden with acronyms.) Heh

'bout time they did something with Treehouse Villas. They were an embarrassment. In Oct 2005, going by them on the boats from POR/POFQ to DTD, there were trees down on their roofs from Hurricane Charley - which struck August 2004!

I really dug the series, but it's been a long time since that first issue came out. I'm going to have to re-read the whole thing in one sitting to really appreciate it. I'm still not a fan of Frank Quitely's artwork though.

I thought Frank Quitely's work suited it perfectly. I liked that Superman wasn't brimming with muscle and that the suit was looser like pajamas. I also liked his Lois.

I did enjoy this series about as much as Frank Miller's All-Star Batman & Robin. Both series are taking characters into areas they haven't really touched before, and I like it

We were explaining it to a socmed n00b the other day and my colleague said, "it was specifically started to answer the question: 'what are you doing now?' ". n00bs comment was basically, "who the hell cares?" Colleague explained finding friends to meetup with, etc. I then jumped in and talked about some of the ways I have seen it being used, and n00b totally got that it had been coopted for other uses. All that said, I still don't find twitter useful myself.

For someone who isn't a geek (oh, really?) you seem to be spending a lot of productive time inventing ways to torture ppl with technology. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing. This is an interesting idea but I think I'm too lazy to do it. Probably.
