"Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House - a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, 'We are not enemies, but friends…though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection.'" - Live4Emma (L4S) from Bookmarklet

This speech (as well as many of his others) is going down in history as one of the best speeches. I am a Obama Speech Junkie now. - CW™
I started the day cynical...I'm ending the day cautiously hopeful...The country needs this...SHIT, I FUCKING NEED THIS...I pray with every fiber of my being that he delivers and resists, not only the scum-partisan and extreme from the other side but the same ideologues and scum from within...be that transcending leader...be the light you promised to me and do RIGHT by the vote I CAST FOR YOU TODAY...That's MY mantra...that's MY MANDATE... - Live4Emma (L4S)
Great speech! - Tanath
It was modest, sincere, welcoming and trying to unify people under The correct values... Great speech, I will be watching your next moves, president... - Alemsah Ozturk

Obama does mean change, here's why - http://www.scripting.com/stories...
This is another instance of a Leftie calling for change as if, in and of itself, change is a desirable pursuit, which is, of course, loopy. "Change We Can Believe In": what the hell does that mean. In the case of Obama, it means redistribution of wealth, and whatever other Marxist tenets he can foist upon us. - eggsy
Obama at least got education and is a self-made man. He had to struggle and make his way though to the top. He is also very charismatic and quite cultivated, not the least due to his law background. And he is a Democrat !! - Hayk H.
Another country heard from. This is a US election. There are no "citizens of the world". - eggsy
Why can't we have some of both. Charisma, integrity, a strong vision for the future. Something we can believe in. Americans, set your sights higher! - Scott Martin
Yeah, redistribution of wealth is so evil. You do know that severe income inequality is perhaps the leading cause of violent instability, right? - Ben Turner
yeah eggsy, like the elitist corporate shit we've been living under is SO much better. - Rev. Dr. W!cKeD Rock
"redistribution of wealth" usually means a society is using force to mug someone... it's just another term for violent theft. As for the idea of change? Well, Obama really isn't that different... look into his history in Chicago, including the way he won his elections there. He is just another politician, maybe a bit less honest than most. The facts simply don't support his recent branding as an idealistic outsider. - Soulhuntre
"We the People" of the USA are the problem, and ultimately the solution if we can ever get beyond being wagged by the political parties and start demanding the government "We" want. - Jim McCusker
At the end of the day, Obama will be elected because the Bush administration was just so awful. That's all there is to it. People will only feel disappointed in him if he does manage to be worse. - Ciaoenrico
Jim, good point. As much as I do have hope in Obama to bring about much needed changes, we Americans need to grow up beyond the idea that anyone can or will save us --its our responsibility to start making lasting changes. Dollars (i.e. on oil, plastics, etc. vs. local, quality goods) are powerful votes. - Leif Hansen
@Leif Hansen - the core point is a good one. The idea of someone selling himself to you as your savior (and Obama certainly has) should send up red flags all around. Then again, snake oil always sells to crowds. - Soulhuntre
Soulhuntre -every candidate is guilty of this to some degree -the system is set up to sell saviours (wow, what a nice tongue-twister). And actually, from what I read in Obama's Audacity of Hope, he seems to put a lot more emphasis on each of our individual responsibility --which would reflect his amazing journey as well. - Leif Hansen
Soulhuntre, the sad fact is that Euro-styled socialism is preferable to the mess that the GOP has left us with. The Republicans had 6 uninterrupted years in power and completely screwed the country with it. They have failed completely. Obama might not be a great choice for President, but he's a HELL of a lot better than a continuation of the Bush policies. - Internet's Tad
Honestly, there are two different kinds of elections. There are those where you happily vote for the person you want to win, and there are those where you happily vote against the person you DON'T want to win. No matter who the candidates are, some people will they're voting in the first type of election and others will feel they're voting in the second. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I think the real change is having a leader who is able to energize people. If he can not only maintain, but increase his ability to mobilize, especially beyond the youth vote, we might be surprised what's possible. It sounds cliché, but the real power is with the people. - mikepk from Alert Thingy
@Leif Hansen Missed your comment, I agree, it's up to us. I think Obama has the potential to actually motivate and energize the people to action. I see the potential there, I truly hope he can deliver. - mikepk

@eggsy By definition, only lefties can call for change. If someone calls for change and calls himself/herself conservative, it means that the man/wman is thoroughly confused. Being a leftie is good thing. It is because of them the world progresses in the positive direction. - Krishnan Subramanian
I guess the Bill Moyer interview of Andrew Bacevich, a conservative West Point grad and army colonel, would make him liberal since he's calling for change. Well worth the time to watch: http://tinyurl.com/5ufwbp - Jim McCusker

Giant of Internet Radio Nears Its 'Last Stand' - washingtonpost.com - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...
I've never used Pandora but apparently lots do. Really? End of the line? - Eric Rice from Bookmarklet
I love Pandora. And I would be really really pissed if the recording industry proves itself so small minded that they shut Pandora down. So much so that I would lose any compunctions about pirating music (something I currently don't do). - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
I also wonder if there is any way to track how much money I (and others) have spent on music by bands Pandora introduced me to. It's way more than I used to spend on music - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
The music industry has no idea how to market their wares. And suing its customers doesn't help. - Robert Linthicum
I agree Robert, they really need to get the shift or they'll lose it all. - Leif Hansen
you should try it, pretty nice little service. Find lots of new music I end up....zomg, paying for later - sean percival
i don't like this - .LAG liked that
Note: I love and adore satellite radio, mostly because my music time is in the car - Eric Rice
I've also found lots of great music this way. Discovered artists that it would have been hard to find any other way. I like being able to preview and I'm on of those that loves iTunes for buying music. Pandora and iTunes work nicely together so when I hear something I really like, I can quickly buy it. If Pandora disappeared it would seriously bite. If I didn't like music and desire to listen to it, I'd be considering a boycott. As it is, this will hurt lesser known and newer bands IMO. -
Oh and I realized I had something to plug, that's not like Pandora, but an MP3 blog. I should add a rating system or something. It's mostly hiphop/industrial/world-electronic.. http://kssx.com - Eric Rice
I may not be their target, though. i refuse to buy music from iTunes (DRM hassles over music I own is a game I refuse to engage) and since the Sony rootkit fiasco I also won't buy major labels on disc. I pretty much limit myself to eMusic and CdDBaby. I believe in owning what i pay for, without condition. The digital age changes that not one whit. - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
I would hate to see pandora go. I love it. And this is why I haven't gone on Last.fm, because I don't want to get attached to that as well. You know, Soundexchange says they want more money for the artist but if they keep going forward with their money making plan then they won't get any money because their won't be any internet radio to make money from. - Mathew™ one of a kind
"Net radio is good for musicians like me, and I think most musicians are like me," he said. "The promotion it provides is far more important than the revenue." And therein lies the problem. This nonsense isn't about musicians, it's about the middle men who really REALLY want to be able to line their pockets along the way. Seriously, how annoying and utterly deserving of their coming (I hope) obliteration in the market is the RIAA. - Chieze Okoye
one more nail in the coffin for the RIAA, i hope. goodbye, won't be sad to see you go. i'll give the artist my money instead. - Mike Massey

Photography is Not a Crime - Blint of SFMOMA is an asshole! - http://thomashawk.com/2008...
I've been kicked out of several museums for taking pictures... Apparently they had a $1MILLION dollar coin that was on display... In their opinion, I was going to pull an Ocean's 11 on them. - Michael Forian
Well it's one thing if there is NO photography allowed, and you sneak a camera.. especially a dslr. BUT!!! In T.Hawk's case, he 1. purchased a membership and 2. took photos were it said it was ok on the website. For taht asshole to treat him like some sort of criminal, is BLATANTLY WRONG - Mona Nomura

I've met TH a couple times now and he would NEVER do anything to deserve this. He keeps saying, had this Simon Blint actually talked with him, we would have had a civil conversation with him. DIGG it people! - Justin Korn
YES! I don't understand why it's still at under 200. Come on guys, digg it and get the motherfucker fired! - Mona Nomura
for the love of ... would a simple "i'm not comfortable with the type of camera you're using, and would prefer you not take photos with it until i've cleared it with Jane Doe" have been so difficult? i bet TH would have gone to Jane's office with Blint to explain the bleeding camera, had that been necessary. i'd better go join digg, i suppose. - idnan
It's all about the power of the people. Web 2.0 = REAL democracy. Oh, the irony LOL idnan: digg is only good for one thing, the FFers' blog posts we believe in, to reach as many people as possible.. oh and like the two faced cat born in ohio or something =P You can also click on the digg picture and reach the digg link, too :) - Mona Nomura

Valleywag is the tabloid blog, true. Slashdot just has a news ranking system that isn't as novel as Digg's, but they're not that far removed. - Pete Delucchi
Slashdot also has much better commenters than Digg..which is why I call it the sophisticated 4chan. - Candace
I'm not sure if Slashdot will accept it, but I put it under 'censorship', since there were no other fitting categories.. =| *edit: it looks like someone already submitted it! - Mona Nomura
As a amateur photographer that uses a DSLR, I always carry a copy of http://www.krages.com/phorigh... Many people are ignorant about the rights of a person to use a camera. NoiseRiver Poll : What features do you miss when using NoiseRiver and that are available in the Frindfeed's web UI?
Other than subscribing/unsubscribing (which are not offered in the API yet) ? - directeur from NoiseRiver
I would actually like to have someway to look up previous conversations that I participated in. eg: I comment on something, I want to know when that conv is updated. I also want to be able to bookmark a conv and go back to it (kinda like the "star" feature in gmail) - Shivanand Velmurugan from NoiseRiver
a desktop app would be nice as well.. :) - Shivanand Velmurugan from NoiseRiver
@Shivanand - doesn't the like feature do what you're asking for with bookmarking a conversation? - John Duff
One thing keeping me from NoiseRiver is the fact that the header is so big and really doesn't need to be. All that white space could be used displaying posts. The less I need to page the better. - John Duff
I like being able to see who's subscribed to me on FriendFeed. Also, I know it's not officially part of the FriendFeed UI, but I use a FriendFeed Read Later Greasemonkey script (http://userscripts.org/scripts...). It would be awesome if there could be a Read Later feature in NoiseRiver - Thomas B from NoiseRiver
@Shivanand Velmurugan (shivanand): Actually you can use the links "my comments" and "my likes" to track your comments and faved entries just like you do in FriendFeed. A desktop app may follow :) - directeur from NoiseRiver
@John like allows me to track stuff for one week (which is kewl), but I wish I had an option to sort is based on recent activity. That would be conversation last longer. I kinda like Flickr's recent activity. it keeps old things live, don't you think? - Shivanand Velmurugan
@John (jduff): The top menu and the logo part? - directeur from NoiseRiver
I agree that the header is too big, A "Read later" feature would be extremely useful. I sometimes attempt to do that with likes, but if I happen to like a lot of stuff, things can get lost. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
@possible248 and @jduff: Ok, note taken about the header! Thank you for the feedback! I really like it! :) and yes, I'm planning to add a sort of internal bookmarking (a read later feature) too - directeur from NoiseRiver
Also, I was wondering if you'd be open to adding more people to the NoiseRiver team. I have quite a bit of experience in PHP, Javascript (including AJAX), HTML, and CSS. If you're interested, I could help do some development for NoiseRiver - Thomas B from NoiseRiver
@directeur and @possible248 I currently get by, by using http://www.instapaper.com/, but that just increases the things I have to read anyway :) - Shivanand Velmurugan
@Thomas B (thomasb): Wow! I'm really touched by your offer. Actually NoiseRiver is a python app, but you're really welcome to tweak the CSS and HTML part of it with firebug and send me screenshots and files! If yours are nicer/more usuable they'll definitely be used instead of the quick n' dirty ones I made :) - directeur from NoiseRiver
@directeur I'm a programmer as well, just thought, I should let you know in case you need some free coding hands :) - Shivanand Velmurugan
@Shivanand Velmurugan (shivanand): I really appreciate your offer too! I'll sure call for your help! Thank you :) - directeur from NoiseRiver
@directeur - ya, it's the top menu and logo bit. I was just peaking at your html in firebug too, you have <br class='clear-it' /> in a bunch of places and I don't think it's doing anything. If you really need to clear something a div with the class AND a closing tag is best, without the closing tag things break. - John Duff from NoiseRiver
Also noticed as I was typing that long comment that the comment box doesn't grow when you move to a new line like FF does, that would be nice - John Duff from NoiseRiver
@John (jduff): I totally agree. Like I said before, this was a quick n' dirty layout designed in a matter of minutes to get something where to put the functional code. (I'm humbly the guy behind the bivalidator so I should be ashamed :-) ) - directeur from NoiseRiver
@John (jduff): I bet you're using Safari? - directeur from NoiseRiver
@directeur - Nope, Firefox 2 - John Duff
@John (jduff): Hum... I added this (though still buggy with Safari) two days ago and some people (including me) have etsted it on Firefox and said that the comment boxes are growing... I'm rewrting this anyway :) - directeur from NoiseRiver
i miss the 100 item greasemonkey script so i don't have to click on numbers. because i'm lazy - sergiooo
@directeur: Under Firefox 3 on XP, I get the box growing only to 3 lines ... then it stops. Any further additions scroll. - Alexander Williams from NoiseRiver
@Alexander Williams (squidlord): I'll make it twice bigger than :) --working on it - directeur from NoiseRiver
@sergiooo (droffset) (droffset): The num param is capped to 30 entries in the API. We should blame FriendFeed http://groups.google.com/group... :( - directeur from NoiseRiver
@directeur: You do know how I tend to ramble on! (What's the max size of an entry? I know I've hit it before -- maybe we need a countdown like Twitter has.) - Alexander Williams from NoiseRiver
@Alexander Williams (squidlord): I actually don't know, I've also hit that limit once. The API doc should definitely be updated - directeur from NoiseRiver
When people post or like a whole bunch of images FF only shows a couple and hides the rest, NoiseRiver wraps them to another line taking up more space. I like the FF way. - John Duff
@directeur: Missed Features: Most Liked for the Hour, Day, Week, Month, and Year, with hierarchial filtering based on my keywords. OK, maybe just the first part. ;) - Alexander Williams from NoiseRiver
@John (jduff): Yes, agree. That's part of the "obscure" media thing on FriendFeed. I started resolving it (the videos) and will carry on :) - directeur from NoiseRiver
@Alexander Williams (squidlord): Not in the API :( If only the FriendFeed's team was more present in the dev group they launched :'( - directeur from NoiseRiver
One more, a stats page with nice little graphs. - John Duff
@John (jduff): :) I have a smarter "recommended people" in the lab that needs optimization before the release :) - directeur from NoiseRiver
For the best of the day, week, etc there's a feed that you might be able to use (http://friendfeed.com/summary...). There was an auth param on the end as well but doesn't seem to be needed. - John Duff from NoiseRiver
@John (jduff): Hum... without auth, this means that "my" best is "your" best too! Right? - directeur from NoiseRiver
ya, seems like it worked without auth because i was already logged in. when you authenticate for the user with the api do you get some sort of session variable back that would make sense there? - John Duff
@John (jduff): No, no session var back. We auth every request to the API (for every call that needs auth) I guess the web UI just saved your auth settings once and you were done. - directeur from NoiseRiver

@pop17 Those Playboy polls are insulting and demeaning. Most people put up with them for the publicity - good on you for protesting.
Leo is also insulted that he wasn't selected to be on the list! :snickers to himself: - Geoff Schultz
Just curious, I don't want to start a potentially ugly debate, but how exactly is it insulting? Thanks. - Randy
Randy: It's not, not in general. But I can think of any number of reasons why an individual might *feel* insulted, and they're entitled to their feelings. - Roger Benningfield
So it insulting and demeaning for playboy to post a head shot of Sarah Austin, for a poll and she wants it taken down. Fine it is her image and that is her right. Though is it also insulting and demeaning that Sarah spent todays entire episode of Pop17 playing the Wii fit girl video over and over? http://www.viddler.com/explore.... Will she pull down that episode if the Wii fit girl ask her too? - Charles Dick
Um, settle down, Beavis. :) The "insulting and demeaning" thing is Leo's. I asked Sarah here on FF if she was offended by Playboy's offered opportunity, and she said she wasn't. It's possible that she's just not comfortable being put in a competitive position with these other women... not everyone loves a contest. Don't project Leo's bias on to her. - Roger Benningfield
I'm happy whenever a decent guy defends women's rights to not be objectified. Go, Leo! - kiwinerd
Yeah, I don't know the whole situation, but this is *Playboy*. I think we all know what their motives are. And in the interest of full disclosure, I'm a male, but I think it's all about the way in which it's presented. Some women may feel as though this is akin to walking down the street and running into a bunch of guys going ga-ga and saying, "Whip out dem tits baybee!" But unlike real life, if you don't like what you're seeing in the Internets, you can close the window/tab and ignore it. - Randy
From what I understand and, have read quite a few of those women (if not all) were made aware by Playboy that their pictures and bios were going up in the poll. Although, apparently they weren't aware the winner may be asked to pose nude. Given that and, the fact a commenter here said she wasn't offended, I wonder why she wants it taken down? - The Geek Media
I also can appreciate and respect her desire to not have her "brand" associated with that one. Insulting may be a little strong however. After all PB is not exactly triple X material. - Robert
It's totally insulting. Playboy values women only for their looks. "Win" the poll and get an invite to pose nude. Yick. Would you ask Einstein to pose nude? I would hope that Sarah is more interested in being valued for what she knows than how she looks. If you think Playboy's vah vah voom attitude isn't demeaning to women you might want to examine your values. - Leo Laporte
To tell you the truth, I hope that the winner chooses not to pose (especially if it's Brigitte, because I follow her video blog). Somehow something important would be lost IMHO, whether it's a perception of innocence on the part of her followers or something else. Somehow it seems wrong to me, it's hard to explain - Thomas B from NoiseRiver
"If you think Playboy's vah vah voom attitude isn't demeaning to women you might want to examine your values" Luv ya, Leo, but couldja show me your "I'm a middle-aged guy entitled to speak for women" certificate? I believe these legal adults made their own decisions - and some had "poser's remorse" afterwards (posus interruptus?) - Dean Barnett
Well that's a good question. Did Playboy ask permission? They certainly don't have to - all the women are public figures. If Playboy did, that's great. If Sarah said yes and then regretted it, I can certainly understand, but at that point Playboy has no obligation to take it down. - Leo Laporte
Yeah, wow Leo. Tone down the snark a bit. Oh, and I wouldn't ask Einstein to pose nude because 1) He's *dead*, and 2) He isn't sexy to me. It's as simple as that. Playboy isn't drugging up runaways on Sunset Boulevard, they're saying, "Hey, flat out--we think you're attractive and some people may want to see you naked. Cool? It's not? That's cool too." - Randy
Unsure about the Playboy thing. After all, @shelisrael and @Scobleizer posed topless. Maybe if more male bloggers--never mind! - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Now seeing someone only for their looks is one thing. But this started based off their jobs.. AND, its saying that they have the brains to be in this position, and yet also have amazing looks. It's hardly insulting unless someone takes offense to what most would consider a compliment, or a dream offer. - InsaneNinja
I agree with Leo. Its simply an opinion poll. The only thing they could possibly be asked to take down is the picture, and that was probably taken by their own photographers anyway, so no take-down there. The Funny part I think is what is it with Mothers taking their 8 year olds, to go to a signing for Playboy Models.... Please someone explain that. But besides that, it brings and interesting question of how companies deal with polls. Do you think its right for things like that, be put live without consent? - Tyler (Chacha)
Well they are meant to be fun. But i was wondering if they ask for the Bloggers to agree to be on it or not? I don't know that. - Jorge
I think that just the simple fact that they're objectifying these women can be construed to be both demeaning and insulting. However, on a personal basis, I wouldn't mind Playgirl putting my ugly mug on a poll. Further, since they are public figures, I don't think Playboy has to ask to do anything with their faces and bios. - Charles Ju
Leo: I have so many problems with what you're saying that I scarcely know where to start. :) Saying that Playboy only values women for their looks is like saying that ESPN only values Kobe Bryant for his athleticism... um, yeah, so? If Einstein were hot and alive in 2008, we would have already seen him at least half-naked via Perez. And since when is life a series of binary options? Why can't a woman be valued for what she knows *and* how she looks? *And* how she can belch the Constitution's preamble? - Roger Benningfield
Leo: But most of all... "examine your values"? That's an awfully high horse you've got there, Mr. Laporte. Beware the steeplechase. :) - Roger Benningfield
Roger: I am kinda with you on that one. I mean if we can not value someone for their looks than Hollywood should just shut down, modeling should become illegal and teeth whitening the subject of tabloids. Also all of those old oil paintings in the Louvre? Confiscate them. I think people took their clothes off for a lot of them. PB is about as Americana as Elvis by many people's estimates. To be sure a lot of extreme adult stuff is distasteful to a majority of people. Not sure that I see this in that light. - Robert
I don't much care for Playboy either, but seriously don't get why the intelligentsia is so anti-beauty. It's weird. I'd just reiterate what I said more extensively in this conversation: http://friendfeed.com/e... , which is: beauty is just as valid a way for the world to unfold as is anything else. Kinda agreeing with Roger and Robert here. - Anthony Citrano
I'm an adult woman and a loyal member of the "TWiT army", and I back Leo strongly here. Leo's defence, on air and off, of women's and girls' rights - like the right to not be objectified - is way admirable. Leo Laporte is the Chief TWiT for a reason, and it's not just for his technical, journalistic, and teaching prowess and friendly demeanour. Leo's a fundamentally decent person, a role model, which is why it matters that he exerts leadership. Leo, you're my hero! - kiwinerd
Well said @kiwinerd! I believe that is why so many good people are drawn to Leo. - Jim Bednarz
I don't know why you people are criticizing Leo for openly protecting the liberties of another human being. It's pretty ridiculous that Leo has to defend his stance, you guys are immature and should be ashamed. Just think if your wife, gf, sister, or mother was put into a Playboy poll, would you be ok with that? If not, then you're a hypocrite. - Charles Ju
Doesn't the poll just boil down to "Who would you rather see naked?" That seems like a pretty crude and immature question to me. - Mark
So, Mark, once one "matures", they don't like to see girls naked? I'm also not getting what's "crude" about naked women. I dislike Playboy, too, but because of their unapologetic tack and ordinariness, not that they aspire to worship at the altar of women they find attractive. - Anthony Citrano
Ask yourself why it's important to get female bloggers naked, and yet nearly everone wants to keep the male bloggers fully clothed. It doesn't strike you the least bit odd that only guys can be noteworthy simply for the work they do? I've been playing around on the net for 15 years, and I learned quickly not to let people know I was female. No one asks for pictures if he thinks you're a guy; it's what you say that's important. Reveal your gender, and the request for pictures -- clothed or sans -- begin. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I was trying to say that the concept of the poll, any kind of poll like this, seems just kind of stupid. I agree with those that say these kind of layouts make women objects - I think MiniMage makes this point very well. As a man, I know I have to fight the temptation to see women only in terms of their appearance. I think things like Playboy and this poll play to almost a caveman instinct. Is this really what being a man is all about - voting on which woman I would rather see naked? - Mark
Examined values, don't think it is demeaning. We've seen the emails asking permission. They didn't even need to do that. - matthew
I see what you mean Mark. I'm just saying I don't get why saying a woman is sexy/beautiful is objectifying. Pointing out one asset of a person in no way diminishes the others. I mean, if someone says to me "that's a great article you wrote" or "what a great picture you took", I don't stomp my feet and get indignant and whine, "is that all I am to you? just a string of words?! what about my heart, my soul, my cooking, my business skills??" - Anthony Citrano
@MiniMage - the reason men ask for pictures of women is because men are far, far more visually motivated than women. Guys care what women look like more than women care what guys look like. I also disagree with your premise; women can be noteworthy simply for the work they do - plenty are. But if one is beautiful, I just don't see why that's a bad thing. The world gives everybody certain gifts - and beauty is no more or less a gift than athletic ability, speaking skills, or being a good programmer. - Anthony Citrano
@Anthony Citrano (acitrano): The premise isn't mine; it's the message I get from Playboy. I get that guys have the visual "on" switch. Furthermore, I'd be lying if I claimed my eyes only looked at my beloved technology. However, I think this goes beyond (beneath?) "this blogger is an excellent combination of functionality and form." Can't women be beautiful without looking like they're about to cater to a fella's, ah, reproductive instinct? - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF from NoiseRiver
@Mini - understood. And I'm not sticking up for them; as I said, I'm not a fan. Just was exploring our reaction to the broader issue of beauty. I think sometimes people have this knee-jerk reaction that's weirdly anti-beauty, or at least anti-beauty-appreciation. And you're right that they're not pitching the whole product, no. But they're in "entertainment," so what can we expect? :) - Anthony Citrano
Interesting discussion on a provocative subject. The double standard in political correctness bothers me. PB bad but XYZ thing good. Males are visual I get that too and who would apologize for biology? My wife has had a net presence for years and she gets a lot of interesting emails to say the least, most are pretty poor attempts but some are rather funny and creative in a non-threatening sort of way. It is simply nature. - Robert

Media is clueless on what 3G means. Some news reporters claim that "the three-gigabyte iPhone" was released. Some report that it's the 3rd Generation iPhone. Ugh.
Aaron- it stands for 'Go wait in line while a Get a burrito because we're going to be here all night. Goodnight...'what? they're sold out?' Greeeeat. - Ryan
I'll take a guess - 3G refers to the iPhone using the 3G or 3rd generation high-speed mobile phone data network? - Internet's Tad
Yuck. I've seen this, too. Luckily our reporter didn't even get into it, but I made sure I looked at her copy before the story was released. It's not just the media though -- lots of buyers are saying ridiculous things. Like, they're buying this version of the iPhone because "the OS is more of an open platform than the previous model." Ehhhh. I cut that quote, along with a quote about "speedier cell phone service." No, the phone service is not faster. - Kevin Hessel
iPhone 3G doesn't mean 3G. - Chris Qie
I heard a Canadian reporter call it a G3 iPhone. Nice try lady, but you're about three processor brands too late. ;-) - cecily
LOL @ "3rd Gen" iPhone! Had that same discussion with the three iPhone users in my office. They swore this was the third gen phone, thus 3G. Ugh... - JA Castillo
So what DOES it mean already?!?! - Lisa L. Seifert
Gee, you mean ordinary non-technical people get confused by the mobile industry's vast array of acronyms, and don't even bother to try to comprehend? You don't say? Seriously, you can say "3rd generation high-speed mobil phone data network" but now try to explain what THAT means to someone who doesn't really care. - Jason Wehmhoener
its the mobile phone standard/technology between 2g & 4g - mike "glemak" dunn
G is for "generation" The original iPhone used the 2G GSM standard, but, because it took advantage of some updated standards for data, it was called a 2.5G phone. GSM and other 2G standards like CDMA are all digital, as distinguished from the first gen analog phones. 3G (of which there are a few competing standards) offers faster data transmission than the the fastest 2.5G data standardsstandards, and in theory can support higher quality voice too. 4G will be faster still. WiMax is sort of a 4g preview. - Erik S
People tend to lose interest when they hear an acronym explained with more acronyms. What's the difference between GSM and CDMA? What makes 2.5G different from those? Why are there so many different incompatible standards? (I follow this stuff and have answers to these questions, but most people are just irritated by the whole mess) - Jason Wehmhoener
@Jason, (a) Not caring doesn't excuse a journalist's obligation to get the facts right, (b) a journalist's job is to cut through the mumbo jumbo to make it understandable, (c) one would hope the reporter covering such an event is either a biz or tech reporter and they DO understand it. If that's not possible, it doesn't negate "a" and "b," (d) they can avoid the issue and just call it "faster" because the average *reader* of an iPhone story as a news story (rather than as a tech story) probably doesn't care - Kevin Hessel
Kevin I want to agree with you but the mobile phone technology space is fragmented beyond reason. I don't expect a reporter on a culture beat to get it. - Jason Wehmhoener
Most people are clueless about "3G" -- they don't care about the things we think they do. - Mitch Ratcliffe
The main stream media is generally clueless about tech. It never ceases to amaze me how lazy some reporters are. If they did just 5 minutes of research before writing or reporting on a story they would be 100% more informed and not look like idiots. Even here in silicon valley we still have reporters that fit this MO. - Jeff P. Henderson
Well, they are THE media.. What do you expect? They are not geeks, like us. =) - Winston Teo

Jasons problem with blogging is basically that the masses have stopping giving him the worship he was so clearly looking for. An echo chamber is perfect for him now. Beside that - he knows the emails will be posted to the 'net - so it is basically a blog anyway. What did Jason really blog about except poker and how much money his car cost? I wonder - Can you "bump" up a conversation in FriendFeed simply by liking and unliking it? If you can, then that will be exploited by marketers and others silently and to no end.

i can see PR firms very shortly having interns like their clients' blog posts relentlessly. Also, certain groups of folks will use their communities to push stuff up for mere promotion's sake. Such is social media these days...sigh. - Morgan
Yes, you bump a thread back to the top when you comment or like it, but only to those that are subscribed to you, subscribed to the poster, those who have commented and those who have liked the post already. - Justin Korn
We'd have to subscribe to those interns for the entries to bump to the top of our FriendFeeds. - Hutch Carpenter

Thanks, Rob. I knew there was a limit on the Likes, just couldn't remember how it worked. Now I just gotta figure out a clever way to spam the comments...uh...did I say that out loud? BLAST! - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Rob: That sounds about right. I asked about this because I swore I saw it happened. I might have to test it out and see what the threshold is. But FriendFeed does have checks and balances to stop that sort of thing, but who knows....marketers and interns can be pretty damn clever. - Ben Parr
I LIKE!.... - Noah David Simon
best way to bump a conversation is get a fight going. then the context of the original question is lost. I have seen threads go haywire and they viral because of some flame fest... liking is not the problem.... it is the disliking - Noah David Simon
I thought the same earlier...not tested it yet. If this is the case, i think FF will quickly fix it. - Nicholas James
Post doesn't drop down if you "unlike it". For example, if I "like" 3 items in someone's pile of 50 Twitters, they will pop-up to the top of their page. But if I remove one of the "likes" because I no longer think the item is so hot (or I find a more original source), the "unliked" item stays separate from the other 47 Twitters. There are weird things you can do as a "tag team". At FlyerTalk.com, we started making conventions on how much people were allowed to "bump". - Mitchell Tsai
FriendFeed seems to tweak it's algorithms. A nice improvement about 2 months ago was that liking "old" items (where "old" is somewhat nebulously defined) didn't pop items in the Friend stream. Since I am a sporadic user of FriendFeed (e.g. I've haven't been on FF in 7 days), this keeps my "likes" of old items from bothering other people. Before that, people kept complaining about ancient threads popping up too much. Algorithm needs more work though... - Mitchell Tsai
