This is another instance of a Leftie calling for change as if, in and of itself, change is a desirable pursuit, which is, of course, loopy. "Change We Can Believe In": what the hell does that mean. In the case of Obama, it means redistribution of wealth, and whatever other Marxist tenets he can foist upon us.

"redistribution of wealth" usually means a society is using force to mug someone... it's just another term for violent theft. As for the idea of change? Well, Obama really isn't that different... look into his history in Chicago, including the way he won his elections there. He is just another politician, maybe a bit less honest than most. The facts simply don't support his recent branding as an idealistic outsider.

Jim, good point. As much as I do have hope in Obama to bring about much needed changes, we Americans need to grow up beyond the idea that anyone can or will save us --its our responsibility to start making lasting changes. Dollars (i.e. on oil, plastics, etc. vs. local, quality goods) are powerful votes.

@Leif Hansen - the core point is a good one. The idea of someone selling himself to you as your savior (and Obama certainly has) should send up red flags all around. Then again, snake oil always sells to crowds.

Soulhuntre -every candidate is guilty of this to some degree -the system is set up to sell saviours (wow, what a nice tongue-twister). And actually, from what I read in Obama's Audacity of Hope, he seems to put a lot more emphasis on each of our individual responsibility --which would reflect his amazing journey as well.

Soulhuntre, the sad fact is that Euro-styled socialism is preferable to the mess that the GOP has left us with. The Republicans had 6 uninterrupted years in power and completely screwed the country with it. They have failed completely. Obama might not be a great choice for President, but he's a HELL of a lot better than a continuation of the Bush policies.

Honestly, there are two different kinds of elections. There are those where you happily vote for the person you want to win, and there are those where you happily vote against the person you DON'T want to win. No matter who the candidates are, some people will they're voting in the first type of election and others will feel they're voting in the second.

I think the real change is having a leader who is able to energize people. If he can not only maintain, but increase his ability to mobilize, especially beyond the youth vote, we might be surprised what's possible. It sounds cliché, but the real power is with the people.

I love Pandora. And I would be really really pissed if the recording industry proves itself so small minded that they shut Pandora down. So much so that I would lose any compunctions about pirating music (something I currently don't do).

I've also found lots of great music this way. Discovered artists that it would have been hard to find any other way. I like being able to preview and I'm on of those that loves iTunes for buying music. Pandora and iTunes work nicely together so when I hear something I really like, I can quickly buy it. If Pandora disappeared it would seriously bite. If I didn't like music and desire to listen to it, I'd be considering a boycott. As it is, this will hurt lesser known and newer bands IMO.

I may not be their target, though. i refuse to buy music from iTunes (DRM hassles over music I own is a game I refuse to engage) and since the Sony rootkit fiasco I also won't buy major labels on disc. I pretty much limit myself to eMusic and CdDBaby. I believe in owning what i pay for, without condition. The digital age changes that not one whit.

I would hate to see pandora go. I love it. And this is why I haven't gone on Last.fm, because I don't want to get attached to that as well. You know, Soundexchange says they want more money for the artist but if they keep going forward with their money making plan then they won't get any money because their won't be any internet radio to make money from.

I agree that the header is too big, A "Read later" feature would be extremely useful. I sometimes attempt to do that with likes, but if I happen to like a lot of stuff, things can get lost.

@directeur - ya, it's the top menu and logo bit. I was just peaking at your html in firebug too, you have <br class='clear-it' /> in a bunch of places and I don't think it's doing anything. If you really need to clear something a div with the class AND a closing tag is best, without the closing tag things break.

Um, settle down, Beavis. :) The "insulting and demeaning" thing is Leo's. I asked Sarah here on FF if she was offended by Playboy's offered opportunity, and she said she wasn't. It's possible that she's just not comfortable being put in a competitive position with these other women... not everyone loves a contest. Don't project Leo's bias on to her.

Yeah, I don't know the whole situation, but this is *Playboy*. I think we all know what their motives are. And in the interest of full disclosure, I'm a male, but I think it's all about the way in which it's presented. Some women may feel as though this is akin to walking down the street and running into a bunch of guys going ga-ga and saying, "Whip out dem tits baybee!" But unlike real life, if you don't like what you're seeing in the Internets, you can close the window/tab and ignore it.

From what I understand and, have read quite a few of those women (if not all) were made aware by Playboy that their pictures and bios were going up in the poll. Although, apparently they weren't aware the winner may be asked to pose nude. Given that and, the fact a commenter here said she wasn't offended, I wonder why she wants it taken down?

I also can appreciate and respect her desire to not have her "brand" associated with that one. Insulting may be a little strong however. After all PB is not exactly triple X material.

It's totally insulting. Playboy values women only for their looks. "Win" the poll and get an invite to pose nude. Yick. Would you ask Einstein to pose nude? I would hope that Sarah is more interested in being valued for what she knows than how she looks. If you think Playboy's vah vah voom attitude isn't demeaning to women you might want to examine your values.

To tell you the truth, I hope that the winner chooses not to pose (especially if it's Brigitte, because I follow her video blog). Somehow something important would be lost IMHO, whether it's a perception of innocence on the part of her followers or something else. Somehow it seems wrong to me, it's hard to explain

Well that's a good question. Did Playboy ask permission? They certainly don't have to - all the women are public figures. If Playboy did, that's great. If Sarah said yes and then regretted it, I can certainly understand, but at that point Playboy has no obligation to take it down.

Playboy isn't drugging up runaways on Sunset Boulevard, they're saying, "Hey, flat out--we think you're attractive and some people may want to see you naked. Cool? It's not? That's cool too."

Now seeing someone only for their looks is one thing. But this started based off their jobs.. AND, its saying that they have the brains to be in this position, and yet also have amazing looks. It's hardly insulting unless someone takes offense to what most would consider a compliment, or a dream offer.

I agree with Leo. Its simply an opinion poll. The only thing they could possibly be asked to take down is the picture, and that was probably taken by their own photographers anyway, so no take-down there. The Funny part I think is what is it with Mothers taking their 8 year olds, to go to a signing for Playboy Models.... Please someone explain that. But besides that, it brings and interesting question of how companies deal with polls. Do you think its right for things like that, be put live without consent?

I think that just the simple fact that they're objectifying these women can be construed to be both demeaning and insulting. However, on a personal basis, I wouldn't mind Playgirl putting my ugly mug on a poll. Further, since they are public figures, I don't think Playboy has to ask to do anything with their faces and bios.

Leo: I have so many problems with what you're saying that I scarcely know where to start. :) Saying that Playboy only values women for their looks is like saying that ESPN only values Kobe Bryant for his athleticism... um, yeah, so? If Einstein were hot and alive in 2008, we would have already seen him at least half-naked via Perez. And since when is life a series of binary options? Why can't a woman be valued for what she knows *and* how she looks? *And* how she can belch the Constitution's preamble?

I mean if we can not value someone for their looks than Hollywood should just shut down, modeling should become illegal and teeth whitening the subject of tabloids. Also all of those old oil paintings in the Louvre? Confiscate them. I think people took their clothes off for a lot of them. PB is about as Americana as Elvis by many people's estimates. To be sure a lot of extreme adult stuff is distasteful to a majority of people. Not sure that I see this in that light.

I'm an adult woman and a loyal member of the "TWiT army", and I back Leo strongly here. Leo's defence, on air and off, of women's and girls' rights - like the right to not be objectified - is way admirable. Leo Laporte is the Chief TWiT for a reason, and it's not just for his technical, journalistic, and teaching prowess and friendly demeanour. Leo's a fundamentally decent person, a role model, which is why it matters that he exerts leadership. Leo, you're my hero!

Ask yourself why it's important to get female bloggers naked, and yet nearly everone wants to keep the male bloggers fully clothed. It doesn't strike you the least bit odd that only guys can be noteworthy simply for the work they do? I've been playing around on the net for 15 years, and I learned quickly not to let people know I was female. No one asks for pictures if he thinks you're a guy; it's what you say that's important. Reveal your gender, and the request for pictures -- clothed or sans -- begin.

I was trying to say that the concept of the poll, any kind of poll like this, seems just kind of stupid. I agree with those that say these kind of layouts make women objects - I think MiniMage makes this point very well. As a man, I know I have to fight the temptation to see women only in terms of their appearance. I think things like Playboy and this poll play to almost a caveman instinct. Is this really what being a man is all about - voting on which woman I would rather see naked?

I see what you mean Mark. I'm just saying I don't get why saying a woman is sexy/beautiful is objectifying. Pointing out one asset of a person in no way diminishes the others. @MiniMage - the reason men ask for pictures of women is because men are far, far more visually motivated than women. Guys care what women look like more than women care what guys look like. I also disagree with your premise; women can be noteworthy simply for the work they do - plenty are. But if one is beautiful, I just don't see why that's a bad thing. The world gives everybody certain gifts - and beauty is no more or less a gift than athletic ability, speaking skills, or being a good programmer.

Interesting discussion on a provocative subject. The double standard in political correctness bothers me. PB bad but XYZ thing good. Males are visual I get that too and who would apologize for biology? My wife has had a net presence for years and she gets a lot of interesting emails to say the least, most are pretty poor attempts but some are rather funny and creative in a non-threatening sort of way. It is simply nature.

Yuck. I've seen this, too. Luckily our reporter didn't even get into it, but I made sure I looked at her copy before the story was released. It's not just the media though -- lots of buyers are saying ridiculous things. Like, they're buying this version of the iPhone because "the OS is more of an open platform than the previous model." Ehhhh. I cut that quote, along with a quote about "speedier cell phone service." No, the phone service is not faster.

G is for "generation" The original iPhone used the 2G GSM standard, but, because it took advantage of some updated standards for data, it was called a 2.5G phone. GSM and other 2G standards like CDMA are all digital, as distinguished from the first gen analog phones. 3G (of which there are a few competing standards) offers faster data transmission than the the fastest 2.5G data standardsstandards, and in theory can support higher quality voice too. 4G will be faster still. WiMax is sort of a 4g preview.

Why are there so many different incompatible standards? (I follow this stuff and have answers to these questions, but most people are just irritated by the whole mess)

@Jason, (a) Not caring doesn't excuse a journalist's obligation to get the facts right, (b) a journalist's job is to cut through the mumbo jumbo to make it understandable, (c) one would hope the reporter covering such an event is either a biz or tech reporter and they DO understand it. If that's not possible, it doesn't negate "a" and "b," (d) they can avoid the issue and just call it "faster" because the average *reader* of an iPhone story as a news story (rather than as a tech story) probably doesn't care

Jasons problem with blogging is basically that the masses have stopping giving him the worship he was so clearly looking for. An echo chamber is perfect for him now. @Steven - actually, that was a cheap shot I took at Steve Gillmor, in retrospect. I did take some time to read through one of his more recent posts and, after a few reads, I think he had a valid point. It is really pointless if people do something like this. http://www.calacanismail.com He basically silo'd himself in a shrinking echo chamber, at some point he will need to get out and get some fresh new people's opinions on his writing, or else he will just become (even more) the preacher who preaches to the choir.

I wonder - Can you "bump" up a conversation in FriendFeed simply by liking and unliking it? If you can, then that will be exploited by marketers and others silently and to no end.

i can see PR firms very shortly having interns like their clients' blog posts relentlessly. Also, certain groups of folks will use their communities to push stuff up for mere promotion's sake. Such is social media these days...sigh.

Yes, you bump a thread back to the top when you comment or like it, but only to those that are subscribed to you, subscribed to the poster, those who have commented and those who have liked the post already.

After a certain number of comments and likes, the thread no longer gets bumped.... I sometimes respond late because of that :)

Actually, likes only "bump" a conversation if it is one of the first few likes. I believe comments always bump it. Comment abuse is a lot easier to see though.

Thanks, Rob. I knew there was a limit on the Likes, just couldn't remember how it worked. Now I just gotta figure out a clever way to spam the comments...uh...did I say that out loud? BLAST!

Rob: That sounds about right. I asked about this because I swore I saw it happened. I might have to test it out and see what the threshold is. But FriendFeed does have checks and balances to stop that sort of thing, but who knows....marketers and interns can be pretty damn clever.

best way to bump a conversation is get a fight going. then the context of the original question is lost. I have seen threads go haywire and they viral because of some flame fest... liking is not the problem.... it is the disliking

Post doesn't drop down if you "unlike it". For example, if I "like" 3 items in someone's pile of 50 Twitters, they will pop-up to the top of their page. But if I remove one of the "likes" because I no longer think the item is so hot (or I find a more original source), the "unliked" item stays separate from the other 47 Twitters. There are weird things you can do as a "tag team". At FlyerTalk.com, we started making conventions on how much people were allowed to "bump".

FriendFeed seems to tweak it's algorithms. A nice improvement about 2 months ago was that liking "old" items (where "old" is somewhat nebulously defined) didn't pop items in the Friend stream. Since I am a sporadic user of FriendFeed (e.g. I've haven't been on FF in 7 days), this keeps my "likes" of old items from bothering other people. Before that, people kept complaining about ancient threads popping up too much. Algorithm needs more work though...
