Simon Blint, Director of Visitor Relations at the SF MOMA is an asshole. http://thomashawk.com/2008...
Although it certainly sounds like you're right form your description, your case is stronger without the use of the word asshole. Just a thought. ;) - Erin McMahon
Pitiful. Makes me wonder if you have a discrimination case here too. Why were folks with P&S not harassed? - Kevin C. Tofel
Maybe Erin, but the guy was an asshole and I'm pissed about it. I gave him every opportunity to sit down and discuss my photography and he refused. This is not a way to treat a paying member of the museum and I don't feel that this sort of powertrippy behavior should be tolerated. Sometimes I get mad. - Thomas Hawk
Wow, that is effing ridiculous! Sorry you were subjected to that bullshit. - Anna Haro
First the SF zoos have animals that maul patrons, now the museums are inept as well. Personally, I can't park anywhere in that town w/o getting a ticket. Eff SF. - Pete D
Maybe he's an unhappy Zooomr user ;) - Jason Carreira
I read that story and just cant believe that people can be so blatantly rude and obnoxious while also being totally WRONG! - Manny
@TH I'd be mad too, as of course you have every right to be! I don't doubt that he was, in fact, an asshole. I'd just hate to see your calling him one work against you. Maybe an unfounded concern. (Sry- don't mean to be critical.) - Erin McMahon
Remind me the next time I find myself in San Francisco not to visit the MOMA. This is just plain ridiculous and Blint should be fired by the board... - David's View
wow ... this really sucks ... post dugg @ Digg - Steve Holden
Unbelievable! -
Thomas, if this happens to a photog/blogger of your stature, I can't imagine what would happen to others in the same situation. Shall we start a petition or a boycott? Story in SFist or SFBG? This has to stop. - Richard Walker
Thomas, I love your photography, I envy your perceptions. This dude reminds me of so many petty bureaucrats I've run into over the years and run over as often as possible. There are hundreds of ways to correct the error the museum made in hiring this person. It appears you're supported in either in person or in spirit from the majority of your fellow Freindfeeders. - Jack&Cleo
Erin that was my first comment exactly . While completely justified a more dignified adjective would yield the same attention & more accurately represent the man I have the pleasure of snuggleing with ever night. - Mrsth
people don't understand good glass. My walking around lens is a 24-70 on my D700. Whenever I walk in the room someone makes a comment about how big it is. Sure it is a big lens physically but not as large as most super zoom point and shoot cameras. - gfurry
what a f**cking retard. Not letting you take photos... "Granted". Treating a visitor that way. FAIL. (Dugg) . - Chris Farrugia
Oh, and organize a photowalk at MOMA :D - Chris Farrugia
As a amateur photographer that uses a DSLR, I always carry a copy of http://www.krages.com/phorigh... Many people are ignorant about the rights of a person to use a camera. As the museum's own website allows use of photography, I think you should contact the Museum's director and go over this person's head. - Jack Wilson, K4SAC
Search for the term "Simon Blint" in Google now. He fully deserves it and there could be no better way to teach him a lesson. - Sudar
Thomas, wow this is terrible! The SF MOMA policy on photography is clear, so hearing that you were forced out after taking photos is really hideous!! This complaint has got to reach the ears of the folks running SF MOMA so they can take appropriate action. "Protect the employees"...yeah right! What a tragedy! - Susan Beebe
Reprehensible. That was one scathingly good blog post, Thomas. - Donna Mugavero
its seems that Jeremiah has a bone to pick with Thomas.. more here http://friendfeed.com/e... - Peter Dawson
@firestar9s (Erin), his case isn't stronger without the use of "asshole." And this is what strong language is for. - Tanath
@peterdawson I don't have a 'bone to pick' with Thomas, I just want to ensure we've all thought about the long term impacts this has to online reputations. Thomas is a friend, in fact my profile pic is one he took, and I'll always be thanksful - Jeremiah Owyang
@Jeremiah, thats what friends are for.. to pick bones with. its literally means "if you have a bone to pick with someone, you are annoyed about something they have done and want to tell them how you feel." , IMHO, thats a precise defination of the terms. Pls tell the that "... but is it necessary to tag Simon an a-hole? Did Thomas (and SFMoma) act in accordance to..". NOW to me you r bone picking - Peter Dawson
I understand and appreciate Jeremiah's concern and respect his opinion and he is a friend. I'm passionate about photographer's rights and abuse of authority though. I'm not sure how many of you have been somehow infringed on for photography in the past, but I bet it's a lot of you actually. As someone who shoots every day I pretty much see it happen to me every week. Standing up for our rights and blogging the most egregious cases though is a way to stand up for something that I very much believe in. - Thomas Hawk
