I support your original post, Thomas, but I don't find it all surprising or objectionable for candidates to remove negative comments from the fan pages. They basically want to present only positive information to prospective voters. I don't think any candidates would engage in debate over controversy in social media.

Stephen, but she won't even address the accusations privately or in any fashion whatsoever. She is clearly breaking the law and won't have a conversation about that. I think a lot of people probably think oh, it's no big deal, it's only a judge position after all, but I think that if we can get her to acknowledge that she broke the law, it might be helpful in persuading other candidates...

Thomas, I'm definitely sympathetic to your argument, and I agree it's worthwhile to make noise, but to me the focus should be on the robocalls themselves, not whether or not there's debate on Facebook. As Davis says, it's her page, and it's not ever going to have anything negative appear there.

That $50 (if you're foolish to actually pay that much) isn't just for Netflix. There's a lot of other stuff on XBL you get with it.

Thomas: WAKE UP. Google TV is far from the only device for which access to Netflix streaming doesn't cost any more than a Netflix account. OTOH, it's widely agreed that XBL provides the best living room streaming experience of them all

yeah, but I don't want XBL. I just want Netflix watch now. I'd rather not buy another box but it looks like I'll have to. I could buy a roku, but it sounds like Google TV will include Netflix and might have some other interesting possibilities as well.

Do you have a Wii? You can watch Netflix via that without paying. We won a Sony Blu-Ray player that also has Netflix on it, but it looks like crap compared to just hooking a computer to your TV.

I've got a wii, but I'm not crazy about the fact that I have to have a disc in it to watch Netflix Watch now. I haven't actually tried that yet though even though I've already received my disc from Netflix. Might work on that this weekend.

LANjackal. I bought the XBox 360 before Netflix was even available on it. I bought it to use it as a Media Center extender which it does very poorly in my opinion. It's been an extremely buggy platform that I've suffered through for many years now much to the derision of my wife. I'd prefer not to buy *another* box from here on forward. Thomas, definitely check out the Netflix experience on Wii. it might seem cumbersome to use a disc, but I find that it's the same as putting in a DVD.

I'm no expert, but if it happened to me, I would let them use your photos for free, but tag them with Creative Commons license, as a "give credit where it's due."

I always allow one time/one purpose use, and tell them if they want to use it again, for another purpose, to contact me... so I can decide terms again... whether I do it for free has to do with who the organization is, and whether I feel like donating...

I don't usually use a formal contract with volunteer/non-profit orgs... I basically write in an email what specific usage I am granting, what credit I expect, and what I expect of them if they want to use the pics for another purpose (ask me again). I do make sure that whichever organization it is, that it is one I would feel comfortable supporting... usually this is the case...

Saying a company that puts corn syrup in their products doesn't care about their consumers is strange, because there's really nothing wrong with corn syrup. People opposed to the corn subsidy created a bunch of FUD around it (only referring to it by the acronym to make it sound more scary) but there's far worse stuff to be worried about than a company who uses corn syrup that contains 5% more fructose than regular corn syrup. But not to derail the subject here....

Do the other services have party watch? I'm not saying it's necessarily right to make Netflix a Gold-only service on the Xbox, just trying to think if there are things that Xbox offers that other consoles do not.

Yeah, it's short on new Hollywood releases, I guess. It's getting more and more classics and great foreign stuff all the time, though - with Criterion on board, there are days lately when twenty or thirty absolute cinematic masterpieces get dropped into Instant Watch. You could just about do an entire film course only using what's on Instant Watch. Until I went through last week and cut myself down to only one film per director, I was bumping into the 500 queue limit on Instant Watch every day.

daniel $10 is the price of the netflix sub. it doesn't cost more to watch it on any other platform. however on xbox, you can only stream if you have xbox live gold. I hope that clears things up for you. also, the xbox 360 player is slightly better than all the rest in a few key ways. In all the rest I've used, when you ffwd/rewind even in parts that are in the buffer, you have to wait...

Davis - are you serious? I absolutely hated the TiVo Premiere's interface. The interface is so slow as to be useless, however since I'm not really interested in what's on Blockbuster or Amazon the search didn't help me. The Netflix interface on the TiVo is the worst of all the players I've used (Xbox, MCE, PS3, Insignia blu-ray player, Sony blu-ray player.)

I have no idea what box you're using. That thing is god awful slow. Click.....wait. Click.....wait. It's much, much slower than my Comcast DVR, and the "beautiful" UI doesn't display enough information on any of its screens. I don't care about show artwork, I need info. Worst of all, you constantly jump back to the old UI, and doing simple things like creating a series recording requires way too many presses on the remote.

I used it for a few days just to get a feel for it since I've never had a TiVo, I didn't do the review but it was the same box. Other than Nilay, who did the review and has a series3, our mobile editor Chris went out and bought one himself to upgrade his TiVo and complains its slow too. Now Ben has it, and he's having the same slow experience even on FiOS. we can probably do a tivo premiere thread in home theater to stop jacking this one, but I can't call it.

Thomas, your idea is fantastic. I hope you are able to get the hardware you need to pull it off. Some LCD/Plasma TV's have memory card slots that will allow you to play photos on the TV without a computer. This might save you a ton of setup time and technical issues if you could eliminate the computer from the equation. Also, you might try checking with some of the Rent-To-Own furniture...

You might also consider approaching Canon for funding. There are also photography oriented organizations that have grants available for photography projects occasionally. I remember a few years back that Michael Reichmann over at The Luminous Landscape was involved in an endowment project for photographers. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/about... Not sure if he is planning on doing this again, but you might contact him with your idea, he may know someone that is willing to help you out.

The display manufacturers themselves would probably be ideal. I'm sure that they'd have tons of used displays just laying around. Or maybe they could use it as a way to showcase their newer displays in front of a very large audience. I may try to contact some of them. :)

I get a facebook email message. It's from the mixx agency about some party in Austin. It's totally irrelevant to me because. 1. I don't live in Austin. 2. I'm not visiting Austin. I click on the message and it's from Joaquin Tomas Bartra. This is someone that I don't know and don't have added as a friend. The facebook email is being sent to: "all guests of theMIX agency presents - #thePARTY @SXSW" SO.... Why am I getting this spam? How do I block whomever is sending it? It shouldn't be Joaquin sending it to me right because we're not contacts. So I'm guessing somebody else is somehow forwarding this on to me but without exposing who their name is. Why can't I just see who is spamming me with this and then have an option to block that person from sending me things in the future? Hell, maybe it's a good friend and I wouldn't even consider it spam. But why does Facebook make this so hard and counter intuitive for me?

Facebook is utterly frustrating. I'm getting sick and tired as the endless group requests and some are the same groups and, even worse, some are from the same person. When I see the same group request I'm removing that user from Facebook! :-(

Flickr needs to get their Community ducks in a row and stop using blatant content destruction as their only corrective action. Heather, in particular, acting as Community manager, needs to step up her game to a more adult level and learn to let the Flickr Community grow without her motherhood. A lot of my photos that are NIPSA'd on Flickr are labeled "safe photo" Pierre. When they NIPSA your photos they prefer to do it behind your back. Put a unique tag on the image and then see if you can search for that tag and have it come up. Probably not. Flickr likes to hide speech that is critical of them. You won't have that problem here at friendfeed. If someone doesn't like something here they simply block you. It's a lot easier that way.

Indeed Pierre, they like to nip dissent in the bud. Funny that Stewart Butterfield could say the word "fuck" in a public interview on a video promoting the site when he worked for Yahoo and ran Flickr, but they censor your photo for it. I wonder if the fact that your message is critical of them has anything to do with the censorship in this case.

While I think it's important to understand why someone is registered as a sex offender ("possession of child pornography" could mean "he took nude pictures of his 17 year old girlfriend when he was 18"), this guy is clearly beyond the pale. NAMBLA is the scum of the earth.

I agree with Tudor. If he only had one offense of the magnitude suggested above, I would not think it would be fair to persecute the guy any more once he had served his time. It is clear that this person is way beyond a one time mistake. Being a member of NAMBLA is certainly damning in and of itself. Add his prior conviction(s) and he probably falls into the category of someone who is very likely to repeat offend.

I don't want to defend the guy, but it doesn't seem appropriate that "subject of a federal investigation" is included in the press release unless there was a conviction (or perhaps at least a public indictment with evidence). I'm not going to google nambla, but again I wonder if there are demonstrated illegal actions associated with it (i.e., should simply being a member be a crime?)....

@chilimac if you're really thinking in those terms, then you're not likely to get it. however, i suspect that you just don't want to get it. what is there to get? i think the decision was in an effort to bend the rules of gender and roles. queens=female kings=male. that's what you're comment says. obviously they don't feel exactly the same way in that school.

I wonder if Google/Picasa has explored the idea of a stock photography offering/business. While the Getty/Flickr deal is interesting, fundamentally it fails by paying the photographers too little for their work (20%) and offering restrictions over imagery that are too tight (they won't allow Creative Commons non-commercial licenses and require a 2 year exclusive contract over content). It would seem to me that a "Google Images" brand in stock photography could be a powerful one. Google has the cachet to get the attention of art and stock photography buyers. It could also be a magnet to attract some seriously talented photographers over to Picasa. I think Flickr made a mistake by partnering with Getty rather than building their own. Stock photography represents a multi billion dollar business that Google would seem well suited to enter, especially given that so many image buyers use Google Image search to find images to purchase these days.
