Victoria Kolakowski, Candidate for Alameda Superior Court Judge, Censors Comments Questioning Her Illegal Activity - http://thomashawk.com/2010...
Vote No for Victoria Kolakowski
I support your original post, Thomas, but I don't find it all surprising or objectionable for candidates to remove negative comments from the fan pages. They basically want to present only positive information to prospective voters. I don't think any candidates would engage in debate over controversy in social media. - Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Stephen, but she won't even address the accusations privately or in any fashion whatsoever. She is clearly breaking the law and won't have a conversation about that. I think a lot of people probably think oh, it's no big deal, it's only a judge position after all, but I think that if we can get her to acknowledge that she broke the law, it might be helpful in persuading other candidates... more... - Thomas Hawk
Thomas, I'm definitely sympathetic to your argument, and I agree it's worthwhile to make noise, but to me the focus should be on the robocalls themselves, not whether or not there's debate on Facebook. As Davis says, it's her page, and it's not ever going to have anything negative appear there. - Stephen Mack #TeamMomo

Dear Microsoft, now that Google is going to have Netflix for free on Google TV, how about you drop the $50/year Netflix tax on the XBox 360?
'Netflix tax'? You mean Xbox Live? - Kevin Fox
it would be nice, but it'll never happen. - Joe "Funkasaurus" Pierce
not to mention that the other consoles offer it for free too. - chrisofspades
That $50 (if you're foolish to actually pay that much) isn't just for Netflix. There's a lot of other stuff on XBL you get with it. - Anika
Anika: I got XBL when it first came out and that's what they charged then. Since my account auto-renews, I'm kinda stuck - LANjackal
Thomas: WAKE UP. Google TV is far from the only device for which access to Netflix streaming doesn't cost any more than a Netflix account. OTOH, it's widely agreed that XBL provides the best living room streaming experience of them all - LANjackal
yeah, but I don't want XBL. I just want Netflix watch now. I'd rather not buy another box but it looks like I'll have to. I could buy a roku, but it sounds like Google TV will include Netflix and might have some other interesting possibilities as well. - Thomas Hawk
Do you have a Wii? You can watch Netflix via that without paying. We won a Sony Blu-Ray player that also has Netflix on it, but it looks like crap compared to just hooking a computer to your TV. - Anika
You're the only person out of every comment I've read on the internet that had better PQ from the computer. Now that they've enabled HD streaming to the PC with silverlight 3, maybe. but it's impossible it was better before, there was/is something really wrong with your setup - Richard Lawler
Thomas: your argument is inconsistent. If you'd "rather not buy another box", then why are you complaining about XBL in your OP? A 360 is another box, which is exactly what you said you don't want. - LANjackal
I've got a wii, but I'm not crazy about the fact that I have to have a disc in it to watch Netflix Watch now. I haven't actually tried that yet though even though I've already received my disc from Netflix. Might work on that this weekend. - Thomas Hawk
LANjackal. I bought the XBox 360 before Netflix was even available on it. I bought it to use it as a Media Center extender which it does very poorly in my opinion. It's been an extremely buggy platform that I've suffered through for many years now much to the derision of my wife. I'd prefer not to buy *another* box from here on forward. But I'd also prefer not to pay MSFT $50 a year to... more... - Thomas Hawk
Thomas, definitely check out the Netflix experience on Wii. it might seem cumbersome to use a disc, but I find that it's the same as putting in a DVD. - chrisofspades

Photo Licensing Question: You shoot a charity event for the local chapter for an organization. You are happy to allow them to use your photos as they wish. All of the sudden the national office is interested in using the images. What do you do?
Allow it free of charge? License the images? Other? PS. there is currently no contract in place (that will be changing for future events) - Justin Korn
I'm no expert, but if it happened to me, I would let them use your photos for free, but tag them with Creative Commons license, as a "give credit where it's due." - imabonehead
bonehead - What if receiving credit is not an option? - Justin Korn
Perhaps charge them but for a small fee? - imabonehead
That's what I'm thinking right now. Thanks for your input. - Justin Korn from IM
I always allow one time/one purpose use, and tell them if they want to use it again, for another purpose, to contact me... so I can decide terms again... whether I do it for free has to do with who the organization is, and whether I feel like donating... - Paula W
Thanks for the input Paula. Do you work with charities often? Would you be willing to share the contract you use with such organizations? - Justin Korn
I would allow them to use the pics. - Håkan Dahlström
how do you feel about the charity. A good cause? If so I'd probably let them use them for free. That's just me though. - Thomas Hawk
I don't usually use a formal contract with volunteer/non-profit orgs... I basically write in an email what specific usage I am granting, what credit I expect, and what I expect of them if they want to use the pics for another purpose (ask me again). I do make sure that whichever organization it is, that it is one I would feel comfortable supporting... usually this is the case... - Paula W
Thanks for the follow-up Paula. Much appreciated! - Justin Korn
what did you end up doing? - Melissa
Melissa - There was nothing on the table yet. Was just anticipating the call/email. This all started because I did get a heads up email from my local contact. - Justin Korn

Ticketmaster. - Rochelle
Why is it strange? - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Saying a company that puts corn syrup in their products doesn't care about their consumers is strange, because there's really nothing wrong with corn syrup. People opposed to the corn subsidy created a bunch of FUD around it (only referring to it by the acronym to make it sound more scary) but there's far worse stuff to be worried about than a company who uses corn syrup that contains 5% more fructose than regular corn syrup. nothing wrong with corn syrup? HFCS is directly linked to all kinds of health and nutritional problems. - Hieronymous Boosh
Dell (in the last 10 years), AT&T (which is waaaay worse than Verizon. I thought Verizon wasn't too good until I treid the competition), Delta Airlines, De Beers, BP (Can you believe Exxon of Exxon Valdez is actually a super-safe company now?), PayPal (screws merchants), Chase (credit cards). I LIKE Verizon, BestBuy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Ryan Air, and Apple. - Mitchell Tsai
The evidence isn't there on the corn syrup issue, Joe. Environmentalists used to be on a jihad against it (and corn in general) because Michael Pollan identified it as a major evil. Unfortunately, the facts indicated that it's not really any worse than any other kind of sugar. Don't mean to derail the thread, DM if you'd like to continue. - Mr. Gunn

I'm tired of paying Microsoft $50 a year to watch Netflix on my Xbox. Nobody else charges for Netflix why should they? http://www.google.com/buzz...
Do the other services have party watch? I'm not saying it's necessarily right to make Netflix a Gold-only service on the Xbox, just trying to think if there are things that Xbox offers that other consoles do not. - Jandy
supposedly netflix will be avail on smartphones soon for a lot cheaper, it's avail online already for 10$ or less now, just a thought.... - danielaudet
Davis, are you suggesting that "a few hit shows and 80's movies" are all that's available on Instant Watch, or am I misreading what you said? - Jandy
Yeah, it's short on new Hollywood releases, I guess. It's getting more and more classics and great foreign stuff all the time, though - with Criterion on board, there are days lately when twenty or thirty absolute cinematic masterpieces get dropped into Instant Watch. You could just about do an entire film course only using what's on Instant Watch. Until I went through last week and cut myself down to only one film per director, I was bumping into the 500 queue limit on Instant Watch every day. - Jandy
Davis is king of the TV set. - Thomas Hawk
daniel $10 is the price of the netflix sub. it doesn't cost more to watch it on any other platform. however on xbox, you can only stream if you have xbox live gold. I hope that clears things up for you. also, the xbox 360 player is slightly better than all the rest in a few key ways. In all the rest I've used, when you ffwd/rewind even in parts that are in the buffer, you have to wait... more... - Richard Lawler
Davis - are you serious? I absolutely hated the TiVo Premiere's interface. The interface is so slow as to be useless, however since I'm not really interested in what's on Blockbuster or Amazon the search didn't help me. The Netflix interface on the TiVo is the worst of all the players I've used (Xbox, MCE, PS3, Insignia blu-ray player, Sony blu-ray player.) - Richard Lawler
I have no idea what box you're using. That thing is god awful slow. Click.....wait. Click.....wait. It's much, much slower than my Comcast DVR, and the "beautiful" UI doesn't display enough information on any of its screens. I don't care about show artwork, I need info. Worst of all, you constantly jump back to the old UI, and doing simple things like creating a series recording requires way too many presses on the remote. - Richard Lawler
I used it for a few days just to get a feel for it since I've never had a TiVo, I didn't do the review but it was the same box. Other than Nilay, who did the review and has a series3, our mobile editor Chris went out and bought one himself to upgrade his TiVo and complains its slow too. Now Ben has it, and he's having the same slow experience even on FiOS. we can probably do a tivo premiere thread in home theater to stop jacking this one, but I can't call it. - Richard Lawler

On the radio "AT&T, the fastest 3G network in San Francisco" hahahahaha, what a total lie.

Anybody Know Anything About Getting Sponsorships For Large Scale Art Installations
Thomas, your idea is fantastic. I hope you are able to get the hardware you need to pull it off. Some LCD/Plasma TV's have memory card slots that will allow you to play photos on the TV without a computer. This might save you a ton of setup time and technical issues if you could eliminate the computer from the equation. Also, you might try checking with some of the Rent-To-Own furniture... more... - Jeff P. Henderson
You might also try approaching some of the TV manufactures. They surely have a large number of TV's used for trade shows that they might be able to lend you. - Jeff P. Henderson
You might also consider approaching Canon for funding. There are also photography oriented organizations that have grants available for photography projects occasionally. I remember a few years back that Michael Reichmann over at The Luminous Landscape was involved in an endowment project for photographers. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/about... Not sure if he is planning on doing this again, but you might contact him with your idea, he may know someone that is willing to help you out. - Jeff P. Henderson
Does anyone know if Adobe has a grant program for artists and photographers? They might be another company to contact for sponsorship of this type of project. - Jeff P. Henderson
The display manufacturers themselves would probably be ideal. I'm sure that they'd have tons of used displays just laying around. Or maybe they could use it as a way to showcase their newer displays in front of a very large audience. I may try to contact some of them. :) - Thomas Hawk

So here is where Facebook is frustrating...
I get a facebook email message. It's from the mixx agency about some party in Austin. It's totally irrelevant to me because. 1. I don't live in Austin. 2. I'm not visiting Austin. I click on the message and it's from Joaquin Tomas Bartra. This is someone that I don't know and don't have added as a friend. The facebook email is being sent to: "all guests of theMIX agency presents - #thePARTY @SXSW" SO.... Why am I getting this spam? How do I block whomever is sending it? It shouldn't be Joaquin sending it to me right because we're not contacts. So I'm guessing somebody else is somehow forwarding this on to me but without exposing who their name is. Why can't I just see who is spamming me with this and then have an option to block that person from sending me things in the future? Hell, maybe it's a good friend and I wouldn't even consider it spam. But why does Facebook make this so hard and counter intuitive for me? - Thomas Hawk
Facebook is utterly frustrating. I'm getting sick and tired as the endless group requests and some are the same groups and, even worse, some are from the same person. When I see the same group request I'm removing that user from Facebook! :-( - Kol Tregaskes
*WHY* can't I opt out of all group and app requests? I'm forced to use it because many friends are on it and only it. So I feel like I have to use it for the email part, etc. But is there any way to get anyone from Facebook to actually respond to these sorts of things? They have good, super smart people, like the company formerly known as FriendFeed, working there. I wish I could... more... - Thomas Hawk

Fuck this attitude on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Flickr needs to get their Community ducks in a row and stop using blatant content destruction as their only corrective action. yeah hostility sometimes happens when without warning or any possibility of correction you destroy literally thousand's of hours of people's work. Other people's work that didn't belong to you. Work that they invested not only thousands of hours of work and energy on but significant emotional energy as well. Especially when plenty of things could have been done to remove material that... more... - Thomas Hawk
I just noticed the following on the above photo: This image was moderated as SAFE, PHOTO by Flickr Staff. What does that mean? I can't mark it as anything other, so I imagine they NIPSAd it? - Pierre Honeyman
A lot of my photos that are NIPSA'd on Flickr are labeled "safe photo" Pierre. When they NIPSA your photos they prefer to do it behind your back. Put a unique tag on the image and then see if you can search for that tag and have it come up. Probably not. Flickr likes to hide speech that is critical of them. You won't have that problem here at friendfeed. If someone doesn't like something here they simply block you. It's a lot easier that way. - Thomas Hawk
Yeah, I put a unique tag on. I requested a review of the image with the question "What does this mean?" - Pierre Honeyman
yep, they've NIPSA'd it. if you're logged out it doesn't come up under this search. http://www.flickr.com/search... - Thomas Hawk
Let's see if I get a response. But damn, that was fast. - Pierre Honeyman
Indeed Pierre, they like to nip dissent in the bud. Funny that Stewart Butterfield could say the word "fuck" in a public interview on a video promoting the site when he worked for Yahoo and ran Flickr, but they censor your photo for it. I wonder if the fact that your message is critical of them has anything to do with the censorship in this case. - Thomas Hawk
I have other identical photos with worse language that are not NIPSA. - Pierre Honeyman
Have they ever responded to you when you've requested a review Thomas? - Pierre Honeyman
It's not the language Pierre, it's the fact that it's critical of flickr at a time when a whole hornet's nest of people are angry at them right now after they nuked a very active a popular group on th esite. - Thomas Hawk
They don't want it in Explore. - Pierre Honeyman
Pretty much that's it Pierre. Terrence responded to my request for a review on the photo of the museum painting that they censored and refused to uncensor it. I asked him a respectful question as to why a painting of the backside of a woman in the all ages Institute of Art in Chicago needed to be censored but that the sculpture David which features full male frontal genitalia did not... more... - Thomas Hawk

I just quit "fuckr" forever! I'll never be back there. It was a great place to share info & images but when Yahoo got their grubby little hands on it, it went Disney-stupid fast! So if anyone here knows of any photo/video-sharing free site that truly does not censor, please let me know! - Ben Hardy

James F. Donnelly, Registered Sex Offender Moves in Across the Street From Public Elementary School - http://thomashawk.com/2010...
Good job getting the word out, Thomas. Your blog post is very reasonable for such a sensitive topic. - Stephen Mack #TeamMomo from iPhone
While I think it's important to understand why someone is registered as a sex offender ("possession of child pornography" could mean "he took nude pictures of his 17 year old girlfriend when he was 18"), this guy is clearly beyond the pale. NAMBLA is the scum of the earth. - Tudor Bosman
I agree with Tudor. If he only had one offense of the magnitude suggested above, I would not think it would be fair to persecute the guy any more once he had served his time. It is clear that this person is way beyond a one time mistake. Being a member of NAMBLA is certainly damning in and of itself. Add his prior conviction(s) and he probably falls into the category of someone who is very likely to repeat offend. - Jeff P. Henderson
I don't want to defend the guy, but it doesn't seem appropriate that "subject of a federal investigation" is included in the press release unless there was a conviction (or perhaps at least a public indictment with evidence). I'm not going to google nambla, but again I wonder if there are demonstrated illegal actions associated with it (i.e., should simply being a member be a crime?).... more... - Tinfoil 2.0
LogEx, I'm guessing that the police felt that the information was relevant in conjunction with his conviction of child pornography. I'm hoping to learn more details about his specific case as soon as I can figure it out. - Thomas Hawk

Fairfax High's prom queen is a guy - Los Angeles Times - http://www.latimes.com/news...
Fairfax High's prom queen is a guy - Los Angeles Times
"Garcia, 18, spent most of his years at Fairfax openly gay and wanted to be part of the Los Angeles school's prom court -- but not as prom king. He felt that vying for prom queen would better suit his personality, so he decided to seek that crown, running against a handful of female classmates. He said it started out as a bit of a stunt and challenge -- he wasn't sure the school would allow it. But his campaign for queen ended up being serious and sparking dialogue about gender roles on campus." - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet

I just don't get it. Queens are female, kings are male. If he was a transexual then I could understand the move as a political statement but he even says he doesn't want to be a girl. - ChiliMac
well, I've known a few queens and ALL of them have been males... - Kelly W.
@chilimac if you're really thinking in those terms, then you're not likely to get it. however, i suspect that you just don't want to get it. what is there to get? i think the decision was in an effort to bend the rules of gender and roles. queens=female kings=male. that's what you're comment says. obviously they don't feel exactly the same way in that school. - docrivs
maybe the point was that queen = feminine, king = masculine In that case, it doesn't matter if the the queen is actually a woman. - Alejandro
@docrivs: The reason I don't get it start off with what kings and queens are. Kings are male monarchs, queens are female monarchs. That is the definition and the historical context of the two terms. Sergio is quoted as saying ""I see myself as a boy with a different personality. . . . I don't wish to be a girl...". He doesn't wish to be a girl but campaigned to be prom queen? I'm glad... more... - ChiliMac
@chilimac i see what you're getting at, now. if he was challenging the masculine stereotypes of what being a man/male is all about, then you're thinking he could have chosen to be elected king. my bad. i thought that you were trying to say something completely different from that. @alejandro helped your point too. - docrivs

I wonder if Google/Picasa has explored the idea of a stock photography offering/business. While the Getty/Flickr deal is interesting, fundamentally it fails by paying the photographers too little for their work (20%) and offering restrictions over imagery that are too tight (they won't allow Creative Commons non-commercial licenses and require a 2 year exclusive contract over content). It would seem to me that a "Google Images" brand in stock photography could be a powerful one. Google has the cachet to get the attention of art and stock photography buyers. It could also be a magnet to attract some seriously talented photographers over to Picasa. I think Flickr made a mistake by partnering with Getty rather than building their own. Stock photography represents a multi billion dollar business that Google would seem well suited to enter, especially given that so many image buyers use Google Image search to find images to purchase these days. - Thomas Hawk
