I have DirecTV too, but waiting until late 2009 to get a Tivo? Come on now. I agree with Ed. If I need a PVR I'm getting a Media Center. - Robert Scoble
I've been hearing a lot of people switching to Media Center. My only beef is that I don't want a cable box. If you own an Xbox 360 Media Center is a nice built in extender, along with Vista. - Ryan
but...I love TiVo... How much for a decent media center? - Josh Haley
TiVo as a stand alone company is dying. PVR's from the same company you get media from are pretty good (Comcast, Fios, DirectTV) and much better integrated. Most folks I knew who had TiVo replaced them by now. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
I don't watch much TV, but a card in my PC does just fine, and acts as a PVR if I want it to. - Ian May
I liek the Fios PVR - add in how well WHS works to stream content to my Xbox360 and I am pretty well sorted on this. Next? I want Hulu on the 360 :) - Soulhuntre via twhirl
I love TiVo. Happy to use it everyday, it's been very good to me. Everytime I see someone else's TiVo rip-off, it somehow falls very short. I can't tell why they cant copy it better, but for some reason they don't. TiVo FTW. - Steve Isaacs
if media center allows you to have comcast without the terrible UI, that could be a good solution. DirectTV customer service is so bad- I need to find a replacement when my contract is up mid next year - Tim Connors via mioNews
I am happy with my TiVo HD and may upgrade the series 1 in the other room to a TiVo HD as well. In fact, I bought TiVo stock on Aug. 26 and sold it today, which more than pays for a new unit plus lifetime service. TiVo can't be beat. - Louis Gray
+1 @Steve Isaacs. I had a phase where I used two EyeTV devices with my Mac mini for my HD DVR needs, and it worked fairly well, especially since I could edit and transcode the files as I wished. However, sometimes the set up would fail because of different reasons, like the software encoder process on one of the tuners couldn't handle weaker signals, or for whatever reason a scheduled recording would be missed. I'm back with a TiVo HD and I love it. Rock solid and doesn't take up my computer. - Cheryl Jones
Of course, Elgato recently updated their EyeTV software to have a Season-Pass-like option, and other TiVo-like features, so they might be a good alternative for those not wanting to go with TiVo and are on OS X. I'm sticking to my TiVo for now. - Cheryl Jones
TiVo works best for our household...partly because we can't afford to shell out the big bucks for a Media Center PC...(I know, if I saved my TiVo fees for the next 2 years or so, I could afford one...but then, what would I do in the meantime? Watch commercials? I don't think so.) +1 @Steve Isaacs...Tivo FTW...seriously. - Sean McGee
@Sean McGee - does your cable provider offer a PVR? The are usually relaly cheap as an incremental upgrade. Best of both options. - Soulhuntre
I like my (non-DirectTV) TiVo because unlike the majority of PVRs it doesn't lock me in to a single TV provider. - Kevin Fox
@Soulhuntre: Well, a few months ago, we downgraded to "Basic" cable (20 channels) when we were having financial difficulties...they downgraded our bill, but never put the filter on...so, we're getting Expanded Cable (80 channels) for 12 bucks a month...Now that we can probably afford Digital, I'm reluctant to ruin the "good thing" we've had going for the last 6 months or so... - Sean McGee
Yeah, I won't buy a Tivo. The Verizon FiOS DVR is pretty good, although it does have limited storage (only 180GB). - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
Media Center is one Microsoft product I love...can't live without it - jeff
I've brought up the idea of going with a non-Tivo DVR, but the look on Athena's face made me rethink it. Tivo has been such a wonderful part of our lives since our first (version 1) box (that now lives in my father-in-law's living room). I really like DirecTV and hate Comcast. So, my only real option is to wait until the end of 2009 for the new DirecTivo. - Cyrus Lendvay
Comcast with TIVO HD DVR is pretty awesome. 16 gig broadband, plus $299 dvr. Only limit is no Comcast On Demand. Cable cards don't have 2way working yet. - Keith Teare via feedalizr
i could never own a tv. i don't like the way my brain feels while watching it. and the ads don't add to my life, they only steal time. - Gregory Lent
@Gregory I broadly agree with you, and particularly find the medical ads trying to turn me into a hypocondriac very annoying. Thing is, very few people complain, and yet many folks online want ad-free free services, and go out of their way to block ads (which you can't do with live TV). - Ian May
I ditched my Tivo in favor of the built in recorder in my Dish Network box. I'm perfectly happy and saving money too. - David Jacobs
I'm still partial to my Media Center computer recording my favorite shows and then watching them over my XBox 360 - David Cook via twhirl

Does anyone here at FriendFeed use Ma.gnolia much? I don't see too much on the "everyone" feed that's interesting. What are the pros & cons of ma.gnolia compared to Google Reader & Del.icio.us? - Mitchell Tsai
Mitch, it's what's to come, that's exciting. Progression FTW - Mona N.
I never really liked it, although have an accounton it. Has some tagging and ranking systems. It even has some page saving ability. But, somehow it didnt seem to me intuitive and simple enough and i think it lacks (still?) a browser plugin/bookmarklet thing that Delicious and Diigo have. - Hayk Hakobyan
Quote - "What are the pros & cons of ma.gnolia compared to Google Reader & Del.icio.us?" It's open-source. - Kevin
I use Ma.Gnolia as a strategic element in social marketing. I don't love it, but search engines crawl it and it seems to have some cred with Google. - Rob Sterling
i don't know why but i always liked ma.gnolia than delicious. i've been using it ever since and i'm glad to know it's going open source. - ~C4Chaos
I would switch from Delicious to Magnolia if the page-saving features worked better: they should really play that up more. And the longer character limit, for the description, is also a big plus; I still don't really understand why Delicious has such a restrictive character limit on, of all things, the description field. Heck, now that Zotero syncs machines, I'm considering shifting over to that ... - joneilortiz
This is fantastic news! - Eric Florenzano
Interesting - perhaps I'll do some hacking that will allow me to pull bookmarks in via an RSS feed which is is something I've wanted for ages... - Andy Davies

Perfect wording considering how addictive FF is - Brian Sullivan
The reason I say this is that the adoption curve for Twitter, well took a while. Friendfeed adoption curve is steeper, with more folks coming on faster. Early micromedia adoption from twitter paved the way for FF to quickly take off. I'd guess that if FF came before Twitter, adoption would have been slower. Your thoughts? - Jeremiah Owyang
Graham see these compete numbers. Friendfeed has 26% adoption rate in last month, Twitter has 21% increase http://siteanalytics.compete.c... - Jeremiah Owyang
Where the heck is Louis Gray....;) - Jeremiah Owyang
Jeremiah, I think you're right. For all its troubles (which seem to be under control now), Twitter was the trail blazer. I wouldn't be using any social media if it weren't for Twitter. - Gregory Pittman
I think the migration pattern is more interesting.. why have many Twitter users moved over to FF .. secondly what is the 'stickiness' factor of Twitter. The core philosophy of twitter was- what you doing.Whereas, with FF its feed me interesting stuff. Like Scobles sez, smart people are on FF, does that mean smart people are not on Twitter ? Nope, it just means that different methods for different people. IS/was Twitter a gateway to FF, in a way Yes. But, on the other hand new comers to Twitter see a post in - Peter Dawson
Where am I? Right here of course. - Louis Gray
<cont> inbound from FF and then are sucked into FF. Remember, there is not much you express in 140 char. - Peter Dawson
Totally agree. Twitter alone didn't hook me, but combined w/ ff, did. Related thought - how does Twitter differ from kids relentlessly changing chat client status messages? I've seen those get to 140 characters or more too (for those that have seen how teens use chat) - Kim Mahan
Peter, I don't think it's a migration. Twitter will co-exist. The fact of the matter is Friendfeed is an aggregator, it sits on top as an overlay. (although some conversations have completely shifted over here) - Jeremiah Owyang
Each person has a different experience with twitter and ff, so I don't think this is a universal truth. For my part, I'm fascinated by twitter and bored with ff. I think the constraints of twitter are part of what make it more fun -- as well as the additional visuals -- peoples' faces, choices of backgrounds, etc. My ff is analytical, and twitter is whimsical. I expect the flavorings of these otherwise similar services (not limited to these 2) to continue to specialize and for distinct cultures to emerge. - Ruth Kaufman
That has to be the best explanation of the transition I have ever heard. - Rob Diana
the "gateway drug" in a concoction that can be made with many "social" ingredients. Twitter is almost always a key part of that recipe. - Kevin Sablan via twhirl
I'm new to all this, but I think Friendfeed is really phenomenal. The discussions and the content all in one easy to digest thread. I'm really enjoying it here and I am looking forward to making more friends so I can feed. - Jonathan (Vacation Boy)
Jeremiah, I cant disagree with that " Friendfeed is an aggregator," I just posted this in fact !! :)- http://peterdawson.blogspot.co... - Peter Dawson
gateway drug my ass ... show me the MONEY trail ... on friend the user is the broadcaster-content provider-distributor (with club-like access restricted rooms)-MIDDLEMAN... Sad but true Friendfreed makes it clear that there is no disintermediation! Friendfeed make you the middle - whose monetization? Let's see how that works out for US - reintermediation as user- generators of units of bandwidth/relevance !!! The gateway is the speed of payment & velocity of fees by payment companies !!! trade bandwidth !!! - Mad Inchina
Gateway Drug -- a great line! I think the addition of the 'Share with note' feature in Google Reader was the gateway for me. I had very few friends using Google Reader (ouch!) but loved finally being able to share and comment on the stuff I was reading. I was hooked on FF immediately. My Google Reader use has dropped quite a bit. - Richard Crocker
I went hardcore straight away, and still I feel it's not "hard" enough for me: e.g. why comments are not treated just like posts (I want to like/reshare/comment-on a comment to), why you can't follow reshares of a post, etc. I guess I'll have to write something "as soon as I marry my daughters" (to borrow a phrase from my mom) - The Dod

I’m currently the Tech Lead for the suggestion systems as part of the keyword tool. We’ve been working on improving the quality of these systems for a while now. A couple of related features/products you might want to try out (also out of the Kirkland/Seattle Google office): - Joe Beda
1) Campaign Optimizer — http://adwords.google.com/supp... — We take a look at your entire campaign (as opposed to the Keyword Tool that only works at the adgroup level) and make suggestions on how to improve it, including setting your budget, bids, keywords and common creative gotchas. - Joe Beda
2) Website Optimizer — http://www.google.com/websiteo... — tools to set up and track both simple A/B UI experiments on your page and more sophisticated multivariant experiments. - Joe Beda
Hei I even have tools in my text editor to make up for the interface as well as combine the tools better (you cannot use the tool without cross check of the traffic tool), and of course work back and forth with excel. @Joe: It would be helpful if chars like umlauts would not be totally screwed. I do have the replacement strings now done, but it would be easier to just be able to copy and paste. - Nicole Simon
Nicole -- what problems are you seeing with umlauts? Part of the ranking for word returned is based on traffic. For instance, I just tried "Schröder" and got back results with a mix with and without the umlaut. I'm not an expert in the ads serving system, but I would bet that for anything besides exact match Schröder will match Schroder and vice-versa. - Joe Beda
As for the traffic tool -- for what it is worth, you can get est avg CPC and est avg position right in the tool if you add those columns. Is that what you were looking for? - Joe Beda
yeah but you want to collect the data on the side and then export it out of the system - which is where the utf8 hits. cpc and avg positions would be relevant if I would want to advertise. ;) - Nicole Simon
It looks like the files are exported as UTF-8. It appears that special characters come through okay. What editor are you using? Are you opening as UTF8? - Joe Beda
yeah but the process opening as utf8 is a bit more complicated than just using the macros. but either way, I am happy I looked into the tool again - shiny new numbers and not bars any more! if you excuse me now, I need to play around! :) :) - Nicole Simon
I'm glad you like the numbers. It was a long time coming, but everyone is happy to get some real numbers there. - Joe Beda
are you kidding? I love data mining. :))) - Nicole Simon

Hello World! AppJet Opens Browser-Based JavaScript School
August 14 at 2:37 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"This online school is significant because it offers a very low barrier to entry for novices who are looking to get their feet wet and start programming. ... Conversely, AppJet requires no software, allowing users to edit, debug, and run code through a browser interface. Because of this low barrier, AppJet may well see an influx of new students who they can convert to regular members." - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet
That is absolutely outstanding. - Kevin D. White
Great idea and great as a teaching aid/resource for high schools. - Peter Simard
Perfect direction for these guys. I always had trouble resolving their product and their target market. It seemed like they were building something that was maybe too simple for advanced users yet too complex for noobs. - Sacca
