Thanks, Simon. I've not started going through these yet. :-)

I'm only going to add the people i actually talk to on here. I have a lot less people on my follow list than you, so its a bit easier for me :)

Remember, guys. According to FB, you're only allowed 5000 friends. Spend them wisely.

As if we weren't before? Were they really that many people here who didn't also have a FB account, even if they didn't list it in their profile? I've been with FB since 2004

FF better figure out how not to destroy themselves (if possible) with this merger. Friendfeed in the FB interface will not work. I think FF really just f*cked themselves.

I'm on Facebook, but I don't have a name in my profile URL (yet; I'm still new...). But if you want it, it's http://www.facebook.com/profile... -- if you friend me, tell me you're from FF.

"I for one can't wait to give my tax dollars to enforce laws for these dinosaur idiot media conglomerates so they can continue to run ridonkulous businesses with horrible structures. I know one day, when I open a business if I can't protect my properties I can count on my tax dollars to work for me, just the way they do for the big guys. So I'm thinking of opening a pop stand on the corner. I can't afford to staff it or protect from theft..I guess my business plans are thin, but hey...the government will probably protect it for me, right? Yeah, we need more taxes, and more money for enforcement."

I do like FF and use it almost every day. Wouldn't it be great if FB either left it alone so we can continue to use it as "professionals," or somehow incorporate it into a more "mature" version of FB that didn't have all the annoying, time-wasting apps, games, etc. I'd much prefer a totally customizable FF "wall."

here. anecdote: a friend of mine just signed up for FF this evening. apparently the FriendFeed hype of the last 24 hours pushed him over the top. leaves me wondering whether FF has actually gained users today?it would be a crafty way of marketing the service. I'll wake up tomorrow to discover that there was a problem with the paperwork and the FriendFeed team have had a change of heart.

I prefer FF over twitter and facebook, but all my friends are on twitter and/or facebook. Maybe facebook will get it right this time now that it has acquired FF. If they simplify it a bit more without removing functionality. Then I would spend a bit more time on FB. Lets hope all goes well with the merger. @Robert RE "I have enough noise in my life. I don't need to have more" - isn't it a lot of noise having 26K subscriptions and 46K subscribers on your frf account? I'm kind of surprised - you create a community that large around yourself, yet when you see a new and unusual activity you just block it right away.
- Махатма Бугоганди
@Robert, patience? Who's talking about patience? It's about curiosity, not patience. When something strange and unusual happens around you, you can either try to stop it or try to see what it can develop into. You choose to stop - and it stopped. Well, not stopped - just moved to some other place. And do you really know what it was and what it was about to bring you?

@bdlangam From my perspective the #1 tip in this category is: Explore and define "best use" for yourself. Yes, apparently this is possible. Also, for iPhone Users outside the US, I notice that only one Google Voice app is available, as of, today in the App Store (this refers to the Ireland store but I presumes applies elsewhere in the EU and perhaps further afield too): VoiceCentral. Because none of the other (Google Voice) apps are available in the App Store I have a faint suspicion that VoiceCentral might just have been placed in a non US app store by mistake. So if you're non resident in the US, feel like using a proxy to set up your GV account, are an iPhone user and don't mind a couple of Euro punt on this app then, if I were you, I'd pile into the AppStore and get me a copy of VoiceCentral before its pulled by Apple. Enjoy and remember, if it doesn't work, don't blame me. For the record I've downloaded myself a copy but haven't yet attempted to try to set up a GoogleVoice account, I haven't even got an invite yet (There's a hint in there: if anyone can advise me, or help, on how to get a GV invitation I'd be very thankful for your help)
- JSLeFanu
from Bookmarklet
I set up a Google Voice account from Germany this weekend. I had to screen-share with a US colleague to get the initial registration done, afterward I used localphone.com to redirect calls. Voice Central works flawlessly.
- Lars Trieloff
Lars, thanks a million for the heads up on that. At least now I know another part of the picture for getting this done. I'm pretty jazzed at the thought of getting this set up. I'll report back on how I get on. Now to get one of those invites.
- JSLeFanu
How can Robert Nelson's public-knowledge reminder to rely on unnamed US-proxies to set it up, along with his fine print[*], be considered anywhere near useful? Lars Trieloff sez that "Voice Central works flawlessly," but what's the value of potentially-critical service which one can never know how long it may last? This is purely academic enquiry in my part, but how many discrete steps were required (each moment of entering a site, navigating to a specific page, filling/ entering username/ password in a form, submitting/ registering, etc, counts as one step) for you to complete the GV registration, including any previous regs you now merely invoked in order to set it up? 100? 200 discrete steps? I wonder…
- ianf ⌘
ianf, I'm not very far down the road with this so I can't offer any real response to the issues you raise. I made the original post because I happened upon this article the same morning I spotted this GoogleVoice app in the Ireland App Store. Normally Apple don't stock apps for services not supported in the market of any given app store. SO for those of a "hacky" mindset I thought I'd just put the word out and attach the necessary caveats. I'm as interested as you are in the responses to your post.
- JSLeFanu
David, I'm not questioning any decisions any of you above may have made, I am merely trying to clarify certain usually-unmentioned things as much for others' sake, as for my own. I have not attempted this unofficial GV setup, and probably won't, because I have other, analogous experiences of past "bypass-ordinary-channel" services similar to that which seldom worked in the long run....

But an invite is required... so...? Proxy is easy, just ssh into your US webhost.
- Paul Grav
Paul, thanks, I have the invite already and I got it using a proxy, that bit was easy. I only have the haziest notion of what ssh means so I'll postpone attempting that until my understanding catches up a bit. I suppose its possible that in practice the process "can" be as easy as Gadgetell portray, its just that in my experience it isn't. Maybe it would be a breeze if I knew more about this "ssh-ing" but I don't and Gadgetell didn't suggest any competence in ssh-ing" was needed.
- JSLeFanu
Well, if you have a webhost in the US, just open a terminal and type: ssh -D 1080 mywebhost.com Then fire up Firefox and change the socks host to 127.0.0.1 and 1080 for the port. Lifehacker has a more complete guide: http://lifehacker.com/237227...

What about the fact that international numbers are not accepted? I'm in Canada, and yeah, I had no problem signing up, proxy-style. However, it won't allow me to route my calls to my area code. I foolishly accepted a number in an outside area code (American) close to my locale, and now I'm stuck giving it a routing number that it won't accept. I think I should have waited and done it...

The article is crap, it basically tells you to setup a proxy but that alone isn't sufficient to setup a Google Voice account. During the setup you select a Google Voice number but you need to forward calls to your own phone, which will inevitably have an international number and only US numbers are supported.
- Paul Grav
I would think the simple way to get around any US IP address requirements would be to have someone in the US setup a TOR hidden service that points to the GV registration. It wouldn't have the same kinds of limitations as typical proxies. (I'm not the Robert Nelson of the article btw)

The nice thing about breaking news on FF is that the number of posts required for everyone to get their OMGz out are decreased by an order of magnitude. On Twitter there's 5 tweets per person about MJ, on Friendfeed there's one post for every few people and then those pile up the comments.
- Daniel J. Pritchett

Saw the first unverified rumors on Tumblr. Switched to twitter for more info and found a raging torrent of unsubstantiated tweets, most w/out links, announcing his death + a few linking to sources reporting the cardiac arrest and hospitalization. Glanced at FriendFeed and saw less rumor and more links to reports of what was so far known. Turned to Google News and found LA Times live blogging verified news. Kept hitting refresh until they updated with confirmation that Michael Jackson was dead.
- Ben Greenberg
WHAT??? MJ's DEAD??? Just kidding, yeah Twitter.

@Mike - I think that counts as FF then, unless the tweet you saw had 0 likes and 0 comments. Don't discount the value of community filters!

- Criz
I found out Michael Jackson had been hospitalized on Twitter. then rumors started that me may be / might not be dead, so I tried searching the web for confirmation and found nothing. Soon, there were links on Twitter to the CBS UStream broadcast which confirmed his death for me.
- jbrotherlove
I'm currently in the hospital and i suddenly woke up in the middle of the night at 3:30 AM and couldn't fall a sleep again, so i turned on my cell phone and in the magic of that quite hospital night i found out from Facebook's statuses of my friends that he's dead. It was a very sad and strange feeling.

Got a txt msg just after 2p (MJ Cardiac Arrest 911) - Turned to my friend and said what the msg said and "He is goinna die" due to Ed McMahon dying earlier this week and that whole 'dying in 3s" thing. I didn't know about Farrah Fawcett until around 5pm. I was away from my computer al day and don't have a 'smartphone.'
- RAD Moose
Saw it in a Swedish tabloid (?) in a Coöp Nara (grocery) in Stockholm. It was in Swedish, but Michael Jackson 1958-2009 was clear enough.

overheard at Whole Foods. Mistrusted, unable to hear on radio (at 6:30 EST); confirmed at 7:10 via the New York Times who had just reported it.

"So the years I've spent building a network of friends here is now completely worthless. Digg, ya should have kissed me before you announced this."

Ok, I've replaced my blip.fm account with the yahoo pipe feed of it, so I could get the embedded player working here at ff. I'm getting incredibly erratic results. Blip has now integrated YouTube, and there's that imeem situation now too. Are these the culprits? If anyone's familiar with this, please let me know.
I'm finding they take a long time to post here after blipping, and some use the media player others don't, but I'm not sure what the criteria is.

Windows. For the record, everyone who uses, Mac, Linux or Windows is using a PC, unless they are running either on a server.
- Alex Scoble
yeah, was waiting for the first person to say that...but heck, even Apple and Microsoft call themselves Mac and PC respectively
- Zee.
Mac, both at home and at work. Happy with it.
- DGentry
If you're talking about the fact that my Mac is my "Personal Computer"...Well, yeah, whatever. As long as we understand each other...
- Zackatoustra
I use a highly customized version of Ubuntu with latest Linux kernel compiled on MacBook.
- Ninh Nguyen
MAC at home, Windows XP at work. Happy with mac, not same with XP, but i really don't have that much programs on my pc at work, so it works just "fine"
- Dani Martínez
Mac. I've tried Linux and worked with Windows and Macs are still the best option IMHO.
- Crispin Bailey
I split my time between Windows (for work and gaming at home) and my Mac at home the rest of the time. If I get my hands on an Apple laptop, this will change a bit.
- ha3rvey (just a friend)
Mac, love it. want a new one, problem justifying when i can get a more powerful windows laptop for half the price
- Jamie Vidamour
Currently using XP at work, Vista at home. I flirt with Linux, and am about to go back to it. Not happy with Windows generally.
- Justin Whitaker
I use a PC with XP. I like my PC. I like my PC with Linux too. I don't like my Mac. Sorry Zee.
- Tamar Weinberg
Amazing Tamar! :) I'm shocked and stunned.. :)
- Zee.
ha. I may not have given my MacBook Air a chance - I don't really know. But I feel like it doesn't do it for me. Perhaps I need a class from you. ;)
- Tamar Weinberg
I primarily use PC for work but I love my ubuntu and would like to be able to use it more
- sofiagk
IMO the only way to be a true Mac convert is to not use a PC for a week.
- Tamar Weinberg
PC (currently a mix of XP and Vista systems at home, both 32 and 64 bit) and extremely happy. Then again, I'm not your average home computer user.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Mac & Win @ home, Win @ work. Both work perfectly fine but I've been a Mac since my college days.
- ronin
Mac -- but only recently. Very satisfied. I always thought Mac was overhyped/overrated (well, it probably still is), but I really am impressed with its speed/power and ease of use. (edit: our primary home computer before the new Mac was a Vista laptop -- was never happy w/ it)
- mark
MacBook - and very happy with it. Also run Windows 7 in a virtual machine (mainly for just one app) and sometimes a Linux distro in another vm ...
- Patrick Jordan
linux(debian and ubuntu), mac, windows. I am getting close to moving everything to mac. windows only runs in a virtual machine for work ( i am a sysadmin and must support users). It panged me to write that I am even considering moving to mac...
- lemuel
Using a PC at home/work, but would like to get a Mac.
- Mike Templeton
Wow. A lot more Linux users than I would have thought!
- Justin Whitaker
PC running Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit + PS3 running Yellow Dog Linux. To be honest though I *rarely* use the latter so it's pretty much all PC all the time. OS X's UI paradigm confuses the hell out of me and my experience with Linux distros is that they all turn into hackathons. Besides that, as someone who collects music, Windows has a LOT more quality tools available than any other OS. I'll be a PC guy for the foreseeable future unless something really major happens on the Linux end.
- LANjackal
I've promised to myself to curb my pedantic nature, so I won't point out how many things are conceptually wrong with the question. I use a linuxes.
- Slappy Line
Peter, IIRC the latest iterations of the Mac's operating system are all linuxey, so the answer is probably yes, you can probably run linux on a Mac. You can also run Mac OS on some PC hardware. And of course, with virtual machines, you can run pretty much any OS on pretty much any (reasonable) hardware.
- Slappy Line
i use pc - vista business on my new refurbished dell laptop and on my old laptop i run xp - have no issues and am happy
- Allen Stern
Macs on the desktop, linux on the servers, Windows on the 2nd-hand or self-built PCs that need proprietary games or proprietary apps that don't work well in CrossOver.
- Glenn Batuyong
I use PC's/xp but have been wanting to expand. I'm borrowing a dinosaur mac ibook to get used to it. An I recently tried Ubuntu 9.04 but I have run into some snags- such as I can't attempt to adjust the screen saver (which is set at 10 minutes) without it kicking in, and shutting down my monitor- which nothing will then wake it. My local friend support for linux is non-existent right now.
- moon_shadow70
PC and I've always been relatively happy with them... still, I wish I had a mac.
- Jim Is Not Smart
first PC, then Mac..then Mac with "windows" :)
- senem özkan
Windows 7 on 3 PCs, with a Mac as my 'TV' computer (using Front Row)
- Wilka Hudson
Primarily PC at home and work, but I am running Puppy Linux on my netbook, and at work I often have to deal with MAC's and Unix boxes so I am pretty much an all-rounder :)
- Asgeir
Linux, and extremely happy. Using Ubuntu 9.04 on my desktop and Crunchbang on my laptop. Might switch to Linux Mint on both of them because I'm so impressed with it. I set it up on my parents' desktop and they love it and never want to use windows again :P
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
very happy with XP on my pc , going to try windows 7 on an old junker i'm fixing up, never used a mac, thought about doing a hackintosh .
- tony bland
I run OS X (+WinXP and Ubuntu in VMs) on my Macbook. But I use far more CPU time in FreeBSD on my servers.
- Mistletoe Glen
All my personal computers have been OSS only for the last 6 or 7 years now. I run Linux on my workstations and OpenBSD for servers. I have tried the alternatives and am happy where I am. I actually run Ubuntu on my MacBook that work gave me. I would rather use Windows than OS X.
- matthew john ernisse
I'm running both Mac, and Ubuntu and am happy with both. I did Windows for too long and will never return...unless...I'm one of the few enthusiasts that still wants things simpler so everyone can use these amazing things, even my grandmother. So that being said if Microsoft or whoever, ever pulls that off I'll go there. Computers are still too complex for the average person, not for me, but for most of the real world people I know.

"Oh my...there's my dream sentence.."...suddenly copyright and intellectual property mean absolutely nothing." The John Lennon song comes to mind. Sure there are people who have no qualms about the morale issues pounded by the copyright holders, and just want free stuff. However there are others that realize this is a golden opportunity to open a dialogue on an unjust system. Information and ideas should be free. These giant corps need to adapt to the new system. This time they may not be completely in charge. Don't cry for Sony..."

Perhaps for a die hard trekkie, but I think this was the first really fun installment. The Star Trek movies never really captured the excitement of the Star Wars saga for me, and I think JJ Abrams has successfully married the two, somewhat. I see your point, however I'm learning that with Abrams he'll settle on some points to score on others.
