I agree with his reasons 100% - I've gotten incredibly nervous in interviews and it always screws up my thought process. I used to have the same problem playing trumpet - I was first-chair trumpet all through High School but when it came to competition I'd always tense up and screw up my audition.

Tough challenge, dealing with the "community," while enforcing strict standards. I'm glad they're holding the app-dev's to a high standard. One big security hole due to a lax in rules just to be "nice" and iPhone AND Apple's rep turns to applesauce. Seems they need about twice the personnel to get through all the work. Security holes aren't due to lax rules. It takes a broken sandbox. You don't need app approvals to maintain a sandbox.

It's analogous to Yahoo trying to maintain curated links versus Google's pagerank. It doesn't really work past a certain level of scale.

Graham describes Android as an orphan; I don't think that's the case. It's being actively updated, and evangelized for use in all kinds of devices (not just phones). If anything, I think Google considers Android more strategic than they let on.

I believe I've been shooting at 720p because well, the file sizes online get compressed anyway so no need to shoot higher resolution. Plus it means I can record more.

The video looks great! I've been putting off my purchase of the Zi8 until Flip came out with a new camera, but they announce one today, and it doesn't have an image stabilizer. In my opinion, an image stabilizer is a minimum requirement for this type of camera. Maybe they'll come out with another one before Christmas, but I would rather not wait any longer.

I've been comparing all of them, but I should take a harder look at the Vado. It seems like the Kodak has the most features and quality in this category. It has a mic input, image stabilizer, 1080P, and the final result is excellent as you can see in Robert’s video.

Michael I Have the Vado. I like the Kodak better. Rodfather: the audio sounds fine to me.

It's still a tough call with these. The iPod will probably take over this space. Digicams still provide more value for the cash. The Panasonic ZS3 looks nice. Wide lens, 12x zoom, optical stabilizer, and 720p recording to AVC Lite. I guess it depends on much stuff you want in your pockets.

Streaming live adds a lot to the cost. If you want to stream from almost anywhere, it's going to take a cell connection. The easiest way is probably an iPhone with qik.com or ustream.tv.

Emy, if you want to live stream, then you don't want to look at these cameras. They're great for uploading to YouTube or Vimeo, but it still is not live. If you want to go live the Nokia Smart Phones, like the N95/96 are excellent choices. There are bunch of new one’s coming out with even higher resolutions, but you might not be able to wait that long. It gets more complicated if you want to use Digicams. It’s possible, but I don’t know if you want to go there.

iTunes Home Sharing is simply awesome. I'm using it right now to copy/sync all my music to my new laptop and it's working great. It's exactly how I've wanted iTunes to share all along.

Benjamin: exactly. It works like the transfer purchases feature on iPods and iPhones: you don't have to be connected to the home network to play them, because the files are copied to your computer.

Wait, you can finally use the songs you buy on more than one computer without having to jump through hoops? My boss would've loved this feature five years ago. Explaining DRM to him was not fun, he just wanted his $1 songs to be playable on all of his PCs.

Ben, the main advantage is that you can set it to automatically sync the libraries so that a copy of new purchases is on both computers. I'm just using it to copy my whole library to a new computer.

Alphaxion, it just copies them over like any purchases from iTunes. When you open the home sharing center, there's a view to 'only see songs that are not on this computer'. You just select which songs you want to copy and hit import.

On a related note, something I've been wondering about recently is the best way to share a library between two Windows user accounts on the same machine. Seems silly to sync them when the files are on the same machine, but I'd like new purchases to appear automatically. Is that possible somehow?

Tony, I think you can do that by changing the 'iTunes Media folder location' to be the same destination. Just choose which /Music/iTunes you want to use and set them both to that one. You can change the location from the Advanced tab in Preferences.

Android has to be closer to an OS than Chrome, since it is actually on OS. Chrome does device management etc? An OS does a lot more than execute javascript in processes.

Does anyone here use Google Notebook? If so, I know that they won't maintain it any longer. But will they delete it completely? Would be nice to know if I should continue to use it or just move along.

I still use it but I don't know what it's future will be. I don't want to move on because Notebook, in addition to being easy & super-useful, has the added convenience of using the same Google logon as gmail, calendar, docs, etc.

I loved Google Notebook. AFAIR they announced that they will keep the data and accounts for existing users until a final notice, but won't allow new registrations and won't provide any new updates/bugfixes. I recently moved all my notes to Google Docs using a single document for each notebook with headings to split the content. It works well, but it's not quite as snappy as Notebook. At the end of the day I still have my notes available everywhere so all good.

Evernote all the way. I was an avid G Notebook fan and my switch to Evernote has been seemless. Evernote also has a desktop version that syncs with online account and a great iPhone app as well.

I think they've already disappeared the firefox extension, unless you already have it installed. The extension made a big contribution to G notebook's utility.

I still make heavy use of Google Notebook, mostly at work, running in the Firefox sidebar (so I don't miss the addon too much). Love the clean interface and the convenience cause I'm pretty much always logged into and using my Google account. If they'd delete it without announcement (hope they never will at all) I'd be f****d. Made a backup to Evernote but that site just doesn't feel right.

I agree 100% with your post, Robert. We use OpenDNS in our household and it obviously helps quite a bit but I already had a few "small talks" with my 9 year old daughter about the "bad stuff" on the internet. No talk can fully prepare a child for what they may see or experience out there but it can certainly help with having your kid make the right choice when faced with such a situation.

I am glad that the movement is swinging away from just only trying to prevent our children from experiencing the dark side of the internet. We need to place reasonable safeguards as well as opening the lines of communication between parents and children. I work in a school and see every day how hard many parents find it to have uncomfortable discussions with their teenagers. Our kids are only allowed to use the computer in the public areas of our house (ie. not their rooms). I am not so naive to think this is the only solution, so I have had discussions with my older kids (11 & 8) about appropriate use, sites, etc. As far as them posting information online, I told them to think about this: If you wouldn't stand up in the middle of your school lunch room and share the same information with everyone, it's probably not a good idea to put it online.

Avynn's computer is in a common room, right where I can see him from my office. We have no censorship of any kind on his computer. So far the worst thing he watches is machinima based around Half Life 2 and sometimes Monty Python. He's 12 now, so we'll probably need to have a talk about porn sometime before too long. He doesn't have any friends yet who even know what email or IM is. That'll change in Middle School.

Locking computers and the web down too much gives kids a reason to want to break free. It is so much better to give them a cool experience and teach them about their behavior on the web at the same time. As much as you try, you cannot "protect" your kids online, except by educating them. The weakest links are their friends. I've seen first hand how friends will introduce new people into a network that no one in the existing network knows. Kids don't realize that these new people are "strangers" because they assume "a friend of a friend" is safe. That's one thing I've had to teach my kids -- that friends of friends are strangers unless you know them in the "real world."

Sorry to hog this, but if I can help one person it's worth it. Teach your kids never to share their passwords with their friends. They often do this for things like neopets and webkinz when they're going to be offline for a while and want a friend to take care of their "pets" or keep in good standing on Club Penguin or something. Their passwords often are the same for a variety of sites, including web mail.

Patrick, the imports may be duplicate URLs or pictures or whatever, but the conversation around them could be different. I see this as a good thing, and it show me two things. (1) it is an intersection of the different groups and types of people that I subscribe to. (2) it can be different nationalities in different timezones. Ie, of a more global interest. So, it has been established, both "."s and "-"s (dots and dashes?) are ignored at Facebook. At Gmail, ".", dots are ignored, "-", dashes are not. At both FB and Gmail, g.a.r.y.e.t.i.e = garyetie = gary.etie. but ≠ g-a-r-y-e-t-i-e, or gary-etie, for Gmail.

It would be getting harder to register firstname.lastname by now (Unless you have a more unique name). After the main one is taken you get reverse name taken lastname.firstname then they start spilling out to using initials which multiplies the amount of people that could also use it. All variations seem to be taken for my name now.

It's simple really. This is how carriers make there money. They subsidize the phone and in return you sign a 2 year contract. You just don't get to upgrade to another phone at the subsidized price if your still in contract for the first subsidized phone.

I'm an existing AT&T customer with a Nokia flip phone, and I'm coming out of contract right now (apparently I came out of contract 2 days ago. Thought it was later this week). I'm being given the price of $199 for the 16gb plus an $18 upgrade fee. So the special pricing isn't just for upgrading an existing iPhone.

I love the options, but it seems like it keeps appearing and disappearing for different search sessions. Incidentally, my search settings keep getting reset to 10 results between search sessions- even if I'm still logged in. My guess is that they probably have a behind the scenes agreement with Google that they can have first purchasing rights. Could be regarded as a 20% time project that needed to branch out and find external investors before it being workable. Brad: From my experience, these heavy likers all have really good taste. If you surf 20,000-100,000 entries/day, you still have to be pretty damn selective to choose 400 to like. There's a huge amount of dedication (or addiction) to look at so much stuff... Take a look at their discussion feeds before you pass judgement. :-) Surfing these people's discussions is a great way to waste (...use) time.

Brad: Watch the live feed on Friend for just an hour. How many items do you think you're seeing in an hour? Some studies show that our brains can visually recognize pictures in 1/3 of a sec (and get about 1000 words of information). Many of the people on this list are on FriendFeed 4-12+ hrs/day. They might be liking only one item every few minutes, and still have 100-400 likes/day. FriendFeed's got quite a few people with AMAZING taste. It's a joy to have so many people helping me filter the news!

Any statistic is going to be possibly meaningless. Even if one looks at comments instead of likes, those may be skewed from commenting on your own things (e.g. if you share something from Google Reader and add a note).

Mitchell, perhaps question to pose to the guys in this group: http://friendfeed.com/ffss. As for topical lists I've gone through loads and loads of groups and found my favourites. I've created lists for each of my favourite topics and added relevant groups to each list. Then I've created saved searches for each topic list showing me entries with x likes and x comments. Works pretty well though took a while to set-up.

Two comments (1) I don't think I'm ever going to warm up to this in-line mixed media thing. I'm always irked when reading through blog comments and mixed in among the text is a little thumbnail of a Seesmic video. @Jérôme Ideally, I would like Gmail to keep track of the contacts I send email to without a subject line. Having to deal with the popup every time, slows me down. It's ok if Gmail asks me once or twice per contact, to learn my preference. However, after that it becomes frustrating to deal with. It can replace empty subjects with the first X characters of my email.

A) We're not going out of business. B) we have other stuff that aren't the "ugly" iconic shoes everyone knows and c) Losing my job wouldn't be the best news ever. :-p Seriously though - if people talked about our OTHER shoes, maybe we can move on from the comfort but ugly talk into just comfortable and EVERYONE will be happy.....

Best story ever - when I was interviewed at Crocs, they asked me what I thought of the company. I said I was impressed with their growth but, and I quote "I'm from New York - You'll never see me wearing those ugly shoes." I was hired immediately. I wear Crocs daily - not the iconic ones - but all our other shoes. I don't like some stuff we do, hate others, and am completely passionate about the ones I love. We're not just a one shoe company! ;-)

Well I'm going against the grain here and have to say for a long time I was a croc mocker but I had a change of heart when I wore my mates pair fishing on my boat. Yes they look bad and the bright colours suck but talk about the best shoe for walking in the water fishing and grippies shoe for fishing on the boat. For me a sad day to all you hates please spare a though for me when my fishing crocs wear out where do I turn what do I wear suggestion are welcome. 8(

It becomes other people's concerns when WAY too many people that don't take care of their feet expose it for COMFORT. Plus, Crocs colors are atrocious. It's criminal, unless you do it right (like Erin's daughter)

I don't think they will ever go away. Just because you are all hating on them doesn't change the fact that they rock. And wall mart will always sell knock off crocs because they can make a killing. Parents love crocs for kids. If Crocs need to reorg to get past relying on debt to operate so be it.

Glad to see George already dropped by and squashed the rumor - after Crocs saved my feet in Austin @ SxSW (thanks to George) I'm a die-hard fan - and no, not of the old-style Mickey Mouse shoes - but of the cute ones I wore all over down there that no one would've known were crocs except I couldn't help telling everyone! :)

I was a "croc-hater" too for awhile. My kids absolutely love them. Personally, I own Nike, Adidas, Prada, Tommy Bahama and Croc flip-flops (normal looking) and the Crocs are by far the most comfortable.

heh. at the horrific prices they charge for original Crocs, I went and shamelessly bought knock-offs at roughly 10% of the price - a whole rainbow collection. my feet love them when I go malling. I save my original Hush Puppies for the times I need to put up an "image" for other people. =)

Indeed, trickery. The cool thing is that adding new keywords only involves adding the FriendFeed search results URL to the proper Google Reader tag/folder. Results then automagically appear back on FF.

One thing I track is the theme park industry trends given that I work for Disney Parks, with Twitter being the ultimate resource. In economics, I like to track "gdp projections", "inflation" and "deflation". And how about you?
