Fort Hood Suspect Was ‘Mortified’ About Deployment to War - NYTimes.com
"Born and reared in Virginia, the son of immigrant parents from a small Palestinian town near Jerusalem, he joined the Army right out of high school, against his parents’ wishes. The Army, in turn, put him through college and then medical school, where he trained to be a psychiatrist. Skip to next paragraph Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. But Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the 39-year-old man accused of Thursday’s mass shooting at Fort Hood, Tex., began having second thoughts about a military career a few years ago after other soldiers harassed him for being a Muslim, he told relatives in Virginia. He had also more recently expressed deep concerns about being sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. Having counseled scores of returning soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder, first at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington and more recently at Fort Hood, he knew all too well the terrifying realities of war, said a cousin, Nader Hasan." - Tim Null from Bookmarklet

"Your online coolness factor hinges on three things: your number of friends (or followers), the wittiness of status updates (or tweets) and the quality of your self-taken picture (or poorly framed mess). You'll have to explore other sections of Wired for help with the first two factors, but we've got a Samsung camera that bills itself as a way to ensure self-promoting shots turn out great every time." - Tim Null from Bookmarklet
Judge Bars Web Site From Selling Beatles Downloads - http://online.wsj.com/article...
"A federal judge handed a preliminary victory to EMI Group Ltd. after the London-based music giant sued a Web site that sold music by the Beatles and other major acts without permission. The Web site's lawyer said he would base his defense on a purported technology called "psychoacoustic simulation." Judge John Walter of U.S. District Court in Los Angeles in a temporary restraining Thursday order told Media Rights Technologies Inc.'s Bluebeat.com Web site to stop selling or streaming music by EMI artists." - Tim Null from Bookmarklet
Can You Smell Me Now? A Guide to the Human Body’s Telltale Emissions - http://www.wired.com/magazin...
"You make an impression. Not personally — who cares about that? But your body emits a thermal signature. Your breathing is loud. You smell (sorry). Your brain crackles with electricity. And it’s all detectable. That’s good news if you want to be rescued from a collapsed building and bad news if you’re planting an IED. At least you’re leaving a mark on the world." - Tim Null from Bookmarklet
Microsoft To Issue Six Security Updates Next Week - http://www.crn.com/softwar...
"According to Microsoft's Security Bulletin Advance Notification for November, four of the bulletins address vulnerabilities in Windows and three of these are rated 'critical,' the highest of Microsoft's four-level threat rating system. The two other bulletins affect Microsoft Office and are rated 'important,' the second highest threat level. One of the Office-related bulletins is for vulnerabilities in Microsoft's Office For Mac product, while the other deals with vulnerabilities in Excel and Word, according to Microsoft. This month's Patch Tuesday will pale in comparison to last month's record release, which fixed 34 vulnerabilities in 13 updates, 8 of which were rated critical. These included fixes for two zero-day vulnerabilities in the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol and FTP Service, which could enable hackers to launch attacks on users' PCs." - Tim Null from Bookmarklet
Review: 'The Men Who Stare at Goats' - http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin...
Review: 'The Men Who Stare at Goats'
"Comedy-drama. Starring Ewan McGregor, George Clooney, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey. Directed by Grant Heslov. (R. 93 minutes. At Bay Area theaters.) Images View Larger Image There's a lot of energy in "The Men Who Stare at Goats." It can be found in the amped-up performances and in the zigzagging narrative, which hurtles back and forth through time as though the people who made the movie couldn't wait to tell us such amazing and incredible things. This energy is persuasive. If the filmmakers are so urgent and excited about their story, there's the sense that we should be, too." - Tim Null from Bookmarklet
