Android is a considerably more open platform than the iPhone. As a result you're going to have some cool applications that you simply can not get on the iPhone. Unless Apple does a big turn around I can see myself trading my iPhone for an Android phone.

Argh. I'm really torn with this whole Android vs. iPhone thing. I'm an Apple fanboy from way back. If you cut me, I still bleed six colors. I don't know which way to turn. If I can be a little hyperbolic, Apple and Google are both companies that have changed the world. If a Google phone is as different from other phones as Google's services have been different from other web services, this could be awesome. This fall, my Blackberry will go off-contract. What do I do then?

Okay, the tech demo was cool, but does anyone really expect to use streetview with an integrated compass? How silly will you look (not to mention dizzy) spinning around staring at your phone? And what problem does it solve exactly?

Well assuming we end up with three different platforms all featuring "slide to unlock" and looking vaguely similar :-) the iPhone still has the advantage, at the end of the day, of being able to effortlessly sync to iTunes.

Joel: I think that's the point GOOG wanted to make with the Open Handset Alliance. Too bad Steve Jobs has such a closed mind. That's why Apple has a tiny computer share. That's why Android will outsell the iPhone. That's why Apple won't sell the 10 million iPhones in 08 as Jobs declared with confidence. That's why Nokia will continue to sell more phones in a week than Apple can sell in a year.

We could speculate that Starbucks has optimized their business process: minimize labor costs while creating a perception of higher demand, which lets them charge more. They also want to be a destination, hoping you go there to see and be seen and maybe spot a friend and stay to chat and buy more stuff. Or, maybe, just too many damn people drink coffee.

If you find Starbucks over-roasted (and it is, terribly), you might want to give their new drip brew ("Pikes Place") a try -- it's considerably lighter roasted and better. As a bonus, it's the cheapest coffee drink on the menu.

interesting. I sure wish there was a way I could get my 5 star rated songs from Windows Media Player on to my Mac and iPhone. I wish I could use Vista to say do a search for all of my 5 star songs and then simply drag them over my network to copy to my Mac's hard drive.

Zune 3 needs to happen with the games development it can really bring something that current classic iPods cant. To be fair Zune 2 is a much more refined player compared to their launch. The few people around here that have them, love it. Microsoft needs to move faster, to keep up if they want to be competitive.

I think it's interesting that the anti-MS crowd makes the same statements about the Zune marketshare that the pro-MS crowd makes about the Mac, and the pro-iPod crowd says the same kinds of things about marketshare and dominance that the pro-Windows crowd says.

The iPod touch isn't setting the world on fire. It jsut isnt a very good music player for many circumstances (commuting, for instance). The Zune does very well. And the support from the free XNA development kits helps a lot.

@Soulhuntre I think you are missing the point. It isn't about the iPod Touch per se. It's about OSX Touch and the resulting platform being generated by both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. And the iPhone alone is outselling the Zune by a factor of 8-1 despite the higher price to entry. The XNA means very little in the grand scheme of things. Microsoft need to rethink their game plan because it really isn't about the iPod any more.

The Zune is NOT a platform. it's a music player and a good one. MS has a platform in Mobile to fight the iPhone... Zune isnt the place. The Zune sells well, peopel liek it and it makes money... it doesn't need to "beat" anyoen because it is not MS's primary attack vector

@ Soulhuntre you aren't saying anything new. you are talking about the present - I am talking about the future. The Zune is destined for failure if it remains just a music player. Apple saw that and jumped into the mobile business. MS has its bets in mobile already, but their business there is the traditional OS model with vendors supplying the hardware. A direct contrast to the Zune model at present.

You can still buy the Zune at places like Target and Walmart I think. What will be interesting is if Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade /XNA/ community gaming thing takes off, is it possible to bring them back? The idea is that indie developers can code once for three platforms: Windows, Xbox, and Zune. Thinking of the Zune in a few years in the space of gaming is good place to speculate. Then, it's with Sony, Nintendo, AND Apple (ipod gaming makes sense too)

Ed, I think Robert's point is that "the purpose" is relative. For a lot of people, Twitter is a way to keep track of people they're already interested in and have relationships with. /I/ find that the signal-to-noise ratio gets higher the more I follow. I haven't jumped into it like Robert has, but my nearly-500 followees give me a pleasant amount of signal, even if the noise alone exceeds the timeline volume of the "average user".

It's true that there are going to be users following thousands of others just because Robert does, but that's a risk anyone takes. Lots of people are going to buy a camera because Ashton Kutcher has one; lots of people are going to see "Indiana Jones IV" because Roger Ebert likes it. One of the risks of being an influencer is having people follow you and then disagree, and there's really nothing you can do about that.

I think the gray font, and the font size, are definitely readable. You can always install the FF Stylish extension and modify it to meet your desires, should you really want to change the font. Also, I'm surprised someone has not hacked together a twitter-like interface for FF which just displays FF-type posts (i.e., *not* data aggregated from various services). Should be fairly easy, especially with their API. In fact, I've thought of doing it myself but just have not yet had the development time.

I love the gray text, actually and don't get why it's not readable. I think every font choice will get some ire. Maybe they should offer some design choices. It's just a CSS style sheet anyway and easy to change font types.

My point? That you can replicate much of the addictive qualities of Twitter elsewhere. But, seriously, why does everything need to have a deep point? Twitter will probably be down sometime during the day anyway.

@scobleizer About not getting why this is not readable to some, if there is one thing we ought to realize by now it's that aesthetics are as personal a sense as the sense of taste. I think themes/skins help.

I don't mind the text. It's readable, and doesn't detract from the original posting. Anyway, thanks for pointing me towards FriendFeed, it seems much more useful (to me) than Twitter (which I personally never got).

I hate the grey text too, that's why I like Alert Thingy's white text on black, it's easier on the eye if you have astigmatism. It's not the size of the text that's the issue, it's the pure paleness of it.

How can I turn off certain/all friends of my friends. I get loads of noise in my daily FF email when I'm not interested in that data. No offense Scoble but I prefer to see what you have to say via Twitter or your blog via RSS and occasionally browsing your FF on my own terms.

The readability of the gray text is directly proportional to the brightness/contrast of ones monitor. That's not a good thing; I shouldn't have to adjust my monitors settings or the font size to read stupid dim text.

My last option would've been Friendfeed. Jaiku and Pownce seem to lack quick posts that show up on Friendfeed. But if I'm inclined to do it, and I see at lest a few of my followers do it, then yes.
