"Great post. From what I've heard, a lot of the criteria for picking apps to be there are, effectively, to showcase what the platform is capable of and help steer people's understanding of what they can do with an iPhone/iPad. So, that would certainly speak to your hypothesis about high quality, but I think it also speaks to the fact that you haven't created a "high quality" zippo lighter app, or something of marginal value. Apps like this help Apple to sell their devices as more capable than their competitors' because they actually allow users to create fun and interesting things, versus just time-kilers."

This kind of "education selling" is brutally expensive and time-consuming, especially when you're a startup with limited resources and zero brand recognition. Despite years of effort and billions of dollars spent by big brands like Google, Microsoft and IAC, there's no convincing evidence that the great mass of local SMBs are prepared to embrace the level of self-service required to make selling to them cost-effective.

"Thanks for pointing me at SublimeText, look forward to checking it out. Two questions: (1) This doesn't seem to have the vim notion of edit and navigation modes, so in your opinion is it even possible to achieve the same level of wizardry you saw from Gary Bernhardt? (2) Am I the only one who loves having a tray on the side with a list of all of my files and subfolders (a-la TextMate, as well as the 'big' text editors?) When you move away from those other editors, do you not miss that?"
