Apps that help you find movie and TV clips to share. They could come from movie studios, Hulu, Funny or Die etc. There needs to be a better movie quote search API in place to make this work well on both the desktop and mobile, but it could be quite cool, and could end up being plugins for existing apps like Shazam, or IM clients as well. Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.

I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.

I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now.

Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.

trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)

Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P

I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I actually hate having to automatically follow people, but I do because Twitter only lets people DM me if I follow them first. Since I want all of my followers to be able to DM me for business reasons, I need to use autofollow. If Twitter makes it possible for all my followers to DM me, I will instantly turn off my autofollower. (I'm using Jesse Stay's http://SocialToo.com service). By the way, I ++HATE++ automatic DM's, but that's a separate issue.

Lightbulbs don't have moving parts like fans and hard drives that need to spin up. IIRC, a PC draws ~1.5amp at start-up and maybe only half that in steady state. I don't think the transient's enough to make up for a night's worth of power, but you have to worry about it if, say, you're trying to power up a crippled Command Module without exceeding the available amperage (see Apollo 13)

Personally I leave my desktops on overnight for downloading updates, virus scanning, and backups. Never really worried too much about the power. I believe there are also thermal cycling issues that can eventually lead electrical components to fail and cycling the drives on/off can cause more wear and tear than just leaving them on steady state.

Sad, really. I know people who work while standing all day who thought these shoes were a gift from God. Hate to see them go for that reason. Personally, I never "got into" them.

A) We're not going out of business. B) we have other stuff that aren't the "ugly" iconic shoes everyone knows and c) Losing my job wouldn't be the best news ever. :-p Seriously though - if people talked about our OTHER shoes, maybe we can move on from the comfort but ugly talk into just comfortable and EVERYONE will be happy.....

Best story ever - when I was interviewed at Crocs, they asked me what I thought of the company. I said I was impressed with their growth but, and I quote "I'm from New York - You'll never see me wearing those ugly shoes." I was hired immediately. I wear Crocs daily - not the iconic ones - but all our other shoes. I don't like some stuff we do, hate others, and am completely passionate about the ones I love. We're not just a one shoe company! ;-)

Well I'm going against the grain here and have to say for a long time I was a croc mocker but I had a change of heart when I wore my mates pair fishing on my boat. Yes they look bad and the bright colours suck but talk about the best shoe for walking in the water fishing and grippies shoe for fishing on the boat. For me a sad day to all you hates please spare a though for me when my fishing crocs wear out where do I turn what do I wear suggestion are welcome. 8(

I don't think they will ever go away. Just because you are all hating on them doesn't change the fact that they rock. And wall mart will always sell knock off crocs because they can make a killing. Parents love crocs for kids. If Crocs need to reorg to get past relying on debt to operate so be it.

Glad to see George already dropped by and squashed the rumor - after Crocs saved my feet in Austin @ SxSW (thanks to George) I'm a die-hard fan - and no, not of the old-style Mickey Mouse shoes - but of the cute ones I wore all over down there that no one would've known were crocs except I couldn't help telling everyone! :)

I was a "croc-hater" too for awhile. My kids absolutely love them. Personally, I own Nike, Adidas, Prada, Tommy Bahama and Croc flip-flops (normal looking) and the Crocs are by far the most comfortable.

heh. at the horrific prices they charge for original Crocs, I went and shamelessly bought knock-offs at roughly 10% of the price - a whole rainbow collection. my feet love them when I go malling. I save my original Hush Puppies for the times I need to put up an "image" for other people. =)
