There are two Whovians in my office. We all agreed that Neil Gaiman needs to write more WHO. Especially after we amused ourselves with various quotes from the last ep.
What did I JUST SAY about the amount of time I have right now? And now you want me to get a double Milla fix. You are not useful. On the other hand, I do have to take a break to eat dinner....
- Jandy
Whatever, I'm watching Fringe. I'm too lazy to get up and put in my DVD of The Fifth Element, since Netflix won't help me out with RE. And sorry, Amber, I just never got around to getting them! :(
- Jandy
lol - aren't they all X-Files themed episodes? It's last week's, which I just got done Twittering looks like it's going to be their version of "Home." Is that what you meant?
- Jandy
Ssssh, Jandy. We are not supposed to notice.
- The Amber
No no, I'm stupid. I was thinking of Bones, I watched Fringe last week, it was good but I was lost on stuff because I'm so behind.
- Joe "Looptid" Pierce
Oops, my bad. I didn't mean to blow the whistle on their perfectly original show with a paranormal activity-investigating FBI division which is NOTHING AT ALL like any other shows with paranormal activity-investigating FBI divisions. ;)
- Jandy
I got way behind on Bones. I never did go watch the Zooey one, even. :( Wonder if it's still on hulu.
- Jandy
Wait...are you talking about Special Unit 2? and yikes, you should check. I've missed a few episodes but Bones has been decent this season. I actually caught the last on on a real TV...it felt weird.
- Joe "Looptid" Pierce
He works because he is open about being a comedian. The other people are just jokes.
- Joe "Looptid" Pierce
Frighteningly enough, we noticed because the actual "news" content rose, rather than declined. Also, it now comes in funny, as opposed to the previous choices of sound bite, misdirecting, and sensationalistic.
- Jennifer Dittrich
go back in the archives of the daily show on the main website (only has jon's eps), see how different the show was back in its day... much more like the onion/CNNNN in many ways with some "news reports" they used to do..
- Terry O'Fee
Ugh. Just... Ugh. Sorry, dark dreary days with no viable job prospects make me meh. I'm *this* close to applying for a call center rep job. My luck I'd wind up with someone I used to train as a supervisor. UGH...

Development is my weaker skillset: I'm slow as molasses at it. Wind up making peanuts per hour in order to make a competitive bid on a project.
- FFing Enigma
Hmm, I have to agree with the 'peanuts' part. Maybe look at a career change ?
- Mo Kargas
Someone told me that despite my first impression of Mechanical Turk that the tasks are not necessarily programming. Just tasks that humans can do better than computers.
- Spidra Webster
Okay, I just checked on AMT. It seems that "secret shopper" people and content farmers have discovered the site. So it looks like you don't need to be a programmer at all but it might be hard separating the wheat from the chaff.
- Spidra Webster
A lot of Mechanical Turk stuff is busy-work, though - you'd have to do a ton of it to actually make much money. One thing for a little supplemental income, but I doubt you could get enough to survive on. Rochelle does some MTurk stuff, as I recall, she'd probably know more about what's available.
- Jandy
Jandy, it was kinda looking like that to me but I've not dug into the projects very much. Might as well take a look, though: might be the way to work towards getting the skates I want...
- FFing Enigma
Yeah, I was thinking of it just a way to make a little $ after all the day's jobhunting is done...
- Spidra Webster
in 5 years I went from frontline call center Internet Repair rep to telephone repair rep to telephone lead to anti-virus & wireless lead to Commercial Business frontline rep to Interner Repair Lead, I suspect within 4 months I'll be a sup and a project manager of some sorts by the end of 2010, it's not so bad when you're off the phones, but if I had to spend another day listening to the crap coming through these days, I'd have to do a /wrists

The hardest part when I was on the lines is that I worked a 10 hour shift; I would lose my voice the last two hours for the first month!

Chin up, Tina. At the very least, it's a means to an end - pays a few bills; allows you to have a few treats. You never know; you might make a bunch of great new friends. And, there's nothing to stop you from continuing to look for something more rewarding in the meantime. xx
- Andrew Terry
hugs it will get better. i know the feeling well. i went six months with no luck back in the day when i first moved out of town...
- Terry O'Fee
Actually, Andrew, that seems to be the problem when I apply for a lower level job: they always assume that I'm going to take it as a stop gap and will leave when/if I find something better. So they don't hire me. Grrr....
- FFing Enigma
Been there, done that Tina. :) You will make it through, and someone will see the wisdom of hiring you. I hope it's soon, and you don't go too crazy before then.
- Bette Cooper
Well, we'll hope I don't go too much MORE crazy: I've always been a little off ;-)
- FFing Enigma
I do Mechanical Turk (and have for about 2 years now) and don't/can't program at ALL.
- Rochelle
Rochelle, how much time would you say you put towards MT each week?
- FFing Enigma
It really varies. I used to spent 10+ each week. These days, maybe an hour. Depends on how bored or busy I am.
- Rochelle
Anyone who wants to know how hard of an edge the new DOCTOR WHO might have needs to see this mini. Steven Moffat, the soon-to-be producer of WHO, did this as well.
- Steven Perez
Moffat could have done some very interesting things with Eccleston's Doctor, I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens with the new ones. Even if I am a bit nervous about the kid.
- Joe "Looptid" Pierce
Imagine the Doctor with a bit of Hyde in him.

Jane!! Oops, I guess Coupling isn't really scary, huh? This is on Netflix Instant Watch? *adds*
- Jandy
I'd like to see James Nesbitt as The Doctor. Jandy, is Coupling any good? I've never seen it.
- Joe "Looptid" Pierce
COUPLING is not bad. I catch it whenever it's on BBC America.
- Steven Perez
from IM
I love Coupling. It was originally meant as kind of the British version of Friends, so there are six friends with varying levels of relationships, but the dialogue and situations are WAY raunchier than anything American (basic network) TV could take. And with that edge of Britishness that makes it even better.
- Jandy
you know how most people rave about joss and say he's the second coming? (my opinon? joss is good but also makes so-so stuff too) i feel that way about the moff. press gang, coupling, jekyll, some of the best who episodes and NOW he's taking over the show.

Married and divorced twice, w00t, go me. Currently single, sharing custody of five children, housing a dog and a cat. in a relationship, the nature of which is complicated (but good).
- Que Sarah Sarah
Not only single but living with parents. ...ouch!
- Mike Cavaliere
I'll be in that boat soon, Mike. Maybe we can start a special room here on FF for that. Oy...
- Spidra Webster
The room should have started 3 and a half months ago. ...double ouch! But I've found it's important to remind yourself of the world outside in this situation. Make whatever contact you can. If that means a special room in Friendfeed devoted only to boredom and self-pity, well, consider me on board.

Soon to be married...don't believe in sin, so can't live in it.

Good grief, if you want to read tech stuff only on FriendFeed then go to all the great tech related groups. If you are thinking that Best of is going to be tech only then you are using FriendFeed incorrectly. Best of will give you a wide variety of content. Use lists, saved searches and the hide button to filter what you want.
LOL, so true Kol. But given that things in Best Of Day are not tech-related anymore, does that make FF mainstream like Twitter? I love to follow geeks too but I understand the world is full of different interests.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
"all we are doing is boosting his ego " - well, there was that burn about a so-called "geek" needing to look up how to do screenshots... made the whole thread worthwhile IMO. (I can't roll my eyes hard enough when media branding topics are considered "geek" topics, BTW.)
- Andrew C (✓)
I'm not going to search for my FriendFeed friends on Facebook or Twitter. No offense but I don't want to interact with you folks on Facebook, and Twitter's 140 character limit is for morons.
- Terris of California
if every friend were chosen purely based on discussion of technology, then the general stream would more strongly favor that subject. otherwise, groups also have a "best of" page, as do friends lists, either of which could have a more narrow focus
- Mike Chelen
Terris: the character limit becomes unnoticeable after ongoing usage, more discussion can be broken into many posts if a subject requires. standalone clients can also be helpful
- Mike Chelen
Mark: the overall number of tech or non-tech users on a service shouldn't influence the posts see in either friendfeed or twitter home pages, since they depend only on what the user's friends are posting
- Mike Chelen
I've been alternating between Guitar Hero 5 and Rock Band 2 today, and I cannot figure out what the difference is, but I do not like GH as much. It doesn't feel as "real" - which sounds dumb. But I get lost in the music much more with RB; I can never shake the feeling that I'm just pushing buttons in GH. Anyone else find that? Wonder what it is.
One thing is I think they track GH more for difficulty than for actually approximating the sounds and progressions of the notes. And even though all the tracks are masters now, the sound doesn't seem as full or well-mixed as it does in RB. But I may just be projecting those things. I know one thing is it doesn't feel like it ares as much about the music or learning about it - shows the artist name and year right when you start playing, but not from the menus. No album title or art, genre, playlists aren't arranged in any kind of order that makes musical sense. It doesn't seem as well-planned or organized.
- Jandy
i enjoy the music more in rock band (oh, australia is STILL waiting for 2 :( ) than i do in guitar hero. also I think the guitars from rock band are more comfortable to use than the guitars from guitar hero. the square buttons that just push in work easier, and the buttons are too small for me with GH (maybe im just used to the RB one)
- Terry O'Fee
Terry, definitely the setlist is better in Rock Band (and 2 is better, and then DLC - that sucks that you don't have it yet in Australia! Lame). But even when the same song is in both games, it's better in Rock Band. I actually prefer the Guitar Hero controllers, which is why I bought GH5 in the first place. They're a lot more precise and less mushy. I can never 100% anything with the RB guitar; I miss random stupid notes because the button doesn't hit it just right.
- Jandy
I think it's the way they set up the patterns. RB might do a better job at making it feel like you're playing an instrument.
- Rodfather
Yep. GH seems to have a slight lag to it, whereas RB seems more real. Even using the GH guitar in RB it still feels more real, so it's not the peripheral, it's the game.
- Anika
Exactly. I was using the same GH: World Tour guitar for both, and it felt immediately more comfortable and more musical when I switched to RB. And less painful - GH was seriously making my hand hurt reaching around for the notes.
- Jandy
I also prefer the GH instruments as the RB ones always felt a bit too mushy to me. Also nice that you can use the GH instruments with all the relatively recent GH and RB games starting from GH3. Play-wise I prefer GH simply because I haven't had the time to work myself past the "medium" setting yet and GH medium is MUCH more challenging than RB medium. RB medium is a joke.
- ronin
That's interesting, ronin. I can believe that - GH on expert is certainly harder than RB on expert, but it's not a fun harder. It's a painful, non-musical harder.
- Jandy
RB is made by Harmonix, who also made GH 1 & 2... Harmonix, AIUI, has many musicians among its staff, which might be why they have a more musical sense about them. I'm still going to (eventually) buy DJ Hero (which itself is not made by either the old or new GH team) but I kinda wish Harmonix had done a DJ game instead...
- Andrew C (✓)
I guess what I'm really wondering is exactly what Harmonix does differently in the actual gameplay/experience that makes it feel more musical (you're right, Andrew, lots of the Harmonix staff are musicians - I think a lot of the bonus tracks on both games are from bands that Harmonix staff are in or know personally). I don't think it's JUST the way the songs are tracked. There's something else, too, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
- Jandy
No, it's the way they're tracked. GH goes for difficulty in fingering while RB tries to make it like playing. also, RB has a much smaller window for hitting a note across the different difficulty levels.
- Richard Lawler
Feeling "betrayed" over the whole #Friendfeed buyout? Think about getting out of the house a bit more often. Or just be happy for the developers instead.
Terry: Bwahahaha! Thanks for the likes guys. Glad I'm not alone.
- Brad McCrorey
I think it sucks, but I'm extremely happy for the FF engineers and developers; they built an awesome product and they deserve every penny of what they got; I just wish they were acquired by a company that fit their "personality" better
- acedanger
I'm not sure if any company (bar Google) would have been good enough for those of you that are worried. I'm not saying Friendfeed's not going to go away, or turn into a huge piece of shit, I'm just saying.. CHILL THE FUCK OUT! It's only day 1. We have no idea what's going to happen yet.
- Brad McCrorey
My new red lips. Not too orange, not too blue. Just right! In case you're curious, I went shopping for warpaint last night (aka "stage makeup" aka "my derby face").
As it's been years since I've actually worn red lipstick, I've remembered that it's darn near impossible to put on properly straight from the tube (need a brush or start off with lip liner). That won't matter much for derby, though: one hit and it'll be smeared all over the place and I'll look like an escapee from the asylum =D
- FFing Enigma
the serious face makes it look even better, IMO ;)
- Terry O'Fee
What, you've never heard it called warpaint Earl? Maybe it's just me, but that's always how I've thought of makeup (especially when going on job interviews!).
- FFing Enigma
love it, believe me I love it so buy it.
- abdellah
nice either way, but this is also a good look. :)
- Joe The Sausage
I think the Marines recently adopted that shade for the Afghanistan campaign.
- SteVe C
Okay I am Navy and the comment about the marines wearing Tina's shade of red made me spit water on my monitor. THAT WAS FUNNY!
- Tony C (Unrated)
from fftogo
*sagenod* Warpaint is either camouflage or distraction: depending on the circumstances this color should serve either purpose well in battle.
- FFing Enigma
War paint on the derby floor, you got to be tough!
- orionstarr
You look great! Like you are on a special SWAT team - And I volunteer to be 'SWAT-ted' first! :-)
- Morgan
Sorry Morgan, I'm pretty sure Dave gets first swatting privileges.
- FFing Enigma
Cheryl, that's Revelon Matte "In The Red" (color 007, which makes me chuckle). If I put it on lightly it's a bit too pink, but another coat brings it back to brick red. Same thing when it starts to wear off... Feels great for a matte, and no sunscreen so I'm not allergic to it.
- FFing Enigma
Does anyone remember the Cathy comic when red lipstick was popular in the 90s? She felt like a giant pair of red lips walking around all day? That's how I feel when this floats back up my feed!

Okay, so, my dad is considering going back to school to get a degree in the culinary arts, and eventually moving on to open his own restaurant. Any tips on how to motivate, encourage, and assist him? He's rather technologically illiterate.
Sorry, I don't have any ideas (other than maybe looking up helpful books for him on Amazon), but I'm Liking this because it sounds like a positive thing :)
- Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Colette, going back to school for culinary arts sounds awesome. However think hard, both you and him, about opening his own restaurant. He should really know what he is getting into. I have gone through this with my father, and its not an easy undertaking. He should know what kind of restaurant the thinks he wants to open and if other restaurants of that caliber have problems keeping...

- Rachel Lea Fox
As for as encouragement, if its a dream just be there to support it every step of the way. Offer your help to in the areas you know well. Ask questions and be involved.
- Rachel Lea Fox
If he knows what school he'd like to go to, a super motivator would be to make a visit and get a tour.
- Kimber Scott
Rachel, both my parents have owned and ran multiple businesses (at the same time) prior to us moving to Florida. My mother has a degree in Business Administration, so that wouldn't be a huge problem. We also have health insurance through her. However, whether or not they would be staying in this area is a question; if so, he can attend either Le Cordon Bleu school, the Art Institute (which is literally, down the street) or Johnson & Wales. And thank you for the support guys. :)
- Colette
I think all the basics, he can get them at school, what I can advise is checking all details when going to a restaurant or business that is succesful, and make a list, start with the corporate image, uniforms, kind of people that he will employ, to what kind of target will he be focusing? etc, good luck
- magali
When my mother (who is working on her PhD) told me she got a B on a quiz/test when she hadn't studied, I said," Guess what you could have gotten if you HAD studied." It felt so EFFING good! No, no, I can't imagine WHERE I could have heard that before...
- MiniMage, enterRUPPted
I'm sorry, But being a Dinner cook for some of the better eating establishmnets here locally, I wouldn't wish owing a restaurant on my worst enemy.
- Brent - Yes I am
If he likes the life described in Ruhlman's "The Making of a Chef", then I'd bet he'd find that to be a motivating book. I read it and thought it was a great book, but also that the restaurant life was clearly not for me. (Daniel Boulud's "Letters to a Young Chef" is also good, except for the part where part of his advice is "start young"...)
- Andrew C (✓)
Weirdly, though, I find Ruhlman's books inspiring for my own career, even if it is a lot easier than being a cook.
- Andrew C (✓)
Oh, I should say - Boulud himself adds the caveat that while he advices aspiring chefs to start young, he also mentions the case of Thuillier (sp?), a Michelin-starred chef who started his restaurant at age 50 -- and had a long run at the top of the game -- after leaving his insurance career behind.
- Andrew C (✓)
What a nice thing to do. The culinary arts will be the easy part: the HARD part will be starting a successful restaurant!
- Will Higgins™
Are you trying to help him with new technology? maybe show him the foodie blogs/social networks that he could participate in. Good on your dad for going back to school to do what he likes! :-)

My iPhone earbuds went through the washing machine, and they are still working. I have a front loading washing machine like the one pictured above. These washing machines use less water that traditional washing machines. I think that's why my earphones and the iPod survived.
- Gerard Lagana
good example - check out that fella a few weeks back who dropped his iPhone in the pool. I wonder if it is still going??

@Gerard I had the same thing happen with an older pair. They survived but the wire was exposed a bit and I eventually got rid of them.

Hehe - spooky because this happened to me only today! I let it dry in my pocket for a few hours then plugged it in and it seems okay - waiting until it's charged to see if the earphones work. Fingers crossed....

Dear Milla Jovovich: Ultraviolet is quite a ludicrous movie in many ways. However, my girlcrush on you is impairing my judgment slightly. And then you went and recorded a commentary for it, which means that I must keep it an extra day and watch it again. Because you are both hot and adorable.
Seriously, I was about to pack it up to send back to Netflix, and idly flipped by the special features, and was like, commentary? I NEVER listen to commentaries, folks, unless I'm writing a paper or something. So I listened to about fifteen minutes, and kept going, AAAAWWWWW. Want. So there I am. Girlcrushed.
- Jandy
++Jandy I had no idea there was a commentary track on the DVD. I have a copy on my shelf unopened now I have a reason for it to be there.
- Joe "Looptid" Pierce
Ultraviolet was horrendous. Really awful. The filmmaker used up all the goodwill from Equilibrium (which I liked!) _and then some_. Was the commentary entertaining or illuminating in any way?
- Andrew C (✓)
Love Milla. Her photos when she began her modeling career were absolutely standout.
- vijay
Andrew, it's the same director from Equilibrium?! I didn't make that connection - that's hilarious, because while I was watching it, it kept making me think of Equilibrium, and I had most of the same issues with both films. Wow. And the commentary isn't so much illuminating as just...Milla. :)
- Jandy
Pea, no, that's the weird thing. I do like The Fifth Element a good bit, but she really doesn't do very good movies. And yet I watch them anyway, and I'm always entranced by her. And she's not even always that beautiful (sometimes, yes, but not in every shot), but there's something captivating about her.
- Jandy
I don't know if it could save the film, but one thing to keep in mind is that it has be amputated of about 30 minutes, compared to the director's cut. Anyway, Ultraviolet is certainly one of the 3 most visually beautiful movies I've ever seen.
- Brome
Oh, it was very pretty, Brome. (Though I wish he'd used less soft focus and less frenetic editing.) But it's lifeless. There's no heart or substance in it. Thankfully, all I was expecting was pretty, so I actually enjoyed watching it fairly well. Except the CGI motorcycle chase. That was pretty crappy all around.
- Jandy
@Leather ♥ Donut If I remember correctly, the movie The Fifth Element is only the first part of a three-part story that Luc Besson wrote when he was young. Meaning that there could be a sequel. The story exists, at least.
- Brome
Brome: for some reason, that claim reminds me of the pre-Ep 1 enthusiasm for new Star Wars movies. ("Of course they'll be great! Lucas has been thinking about this stuff for years!")
- Andrew C (✓)
yeah the movies is dumb as hell, but she's smoking HOT!
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
Ah, yes. The twin mind-numbing qualities of Milla's beauty and ULTRAVIOLET's awfulness. What a combo. :)

I think West was a good Batman and the whole show was very important. The reason I love the character of Batman is I grew up watching re-runs of the show in the 80s. From that I bought the comics and, importantly, pestered my parents to take me to said movies you guys are fighting over. The show was born out of the radio serials. I love radio serials because they relied on acting,...

Most of the narrow houses in the DC-area are old homes in Georgetown or Capitol Hill. But this new home was specifically designed to be 12-feet wide and as tall as allowed by city law. The builder bought the land for two homes, but neighbors, wanting to preserve the historic feel of the area, blocked his bid to get a zoning variance. So he built the tallest, most modern home he could design for the space. The controversial house is now for sale for $1.125 million. What do you think of it?
- Derrick
The skinny house has 2,880 square feet with four floors, four bedrooms, and three-and-a-half bathrooms. It's located at the end of N. Barton Street in Arlington, Virginia, next to "unassuming wooden bungalows in light pastel colors" (quote from the City Paper).
- Derrick
That's near Crystal City and Pentagon City.... so if you like high-end shopping you'd be in love. The underground is right there too so you could get to anywhere in DC within 5-10 minutes. Interesting ;)
- Brandon
Thinking of East Coasting it, Derrick?
- Shawn Farner
Ha! I'm too scared of the snow, Shawn. Guilty of being a fan of cool and interesting architecture, wherever it may be. :)
- Derrick
As far as looks, meh. I suppose it's interesting, but for that kind of money? Nuh uh - the controversy is likely contributing to the price. From a practical standpoint it looks like it would keep water out as effectively as an upturned colander. The exterior walls are very high which renders the eaves ineffective. Rain water will hit the walls directly and it will find a way in.

I live in a 14 ft wide rowhouse with no side windows. While I'd like a lot more light and cross-ventilation, no way would I pay anything like that kinda money for a view that mundane.

"Apple's iPhone has wowed most of the globe — but not Japan, where the handset is selling so poorly it's being offered for free. What's wrong with the iPhone, from a Japanese perspective? Almost everything: the high monthly data plans that go with it, its paucity of features, the low-quality camera, the unfashionable design and the fact that it's not Japanese. In an effort to boost business, Japanese carrier SoftBank this week launched the "iPhone for Everybody" campaign, which gives away the 8-GB model of the iPhone 3G if customers agree to a two-year contract."
